directions between pliers mill road and knowles. >> reporter: a van pulled up to this intersection and that's when a woman in the passenger seat threw opened the doors are started screaming for help. witnesses say she was covered in blood. that's when the male driver grabbed her, pulled her back inside the van, shot her in the head and then threw her out into the middle of connecticut avenue before speeding off. the victim's body i'm sad to say still in the middle of the street behind this barricade as montgomery county police continue to investigate. this all happened in broad daylight at the tail end of the morning rush. there were dozens of witnesses. in fact, when police arrived, several people were already giving the woman cpr. police took over but it was too late. the woman died on the scene and now there is a manhunt under

way for her killer. there are conflicting accounts of what he looked like and what his van looked lying. what we do know is he was a white adult male in either a green or gray minivan. as for a motive, it's way too soon for that but montgomery county police chief says he does not think that this was a random act. gl i do think at this-- >> i do think at this point everything points to the fact that this was not a random act. my guess is with everything we know right now, the victim and the suspect were likely known to one another since it was not a random incident. >> reporter: right now the montgomery county police swat team is in the process of entering a home on halllet street in aspen hill. they'll be clearing the house and going insides the residence searching for -- inside the residence searching for evidence. this is not a confirmation that this home was somehow connected to here but it's certainly being looked at as a

possibility. the scene here on connecticut avenue at knowles street is still a very active scene. police are going to be here for some time as we said before, connecticut avenue is shut down. both lanes, both directions in between knowles avenue and two blocks farther north. it's going to be that way for some time as this investigation continues. police try to -- and police try to track down the person who killed this woman just two hours ago in broad daylight. back to you. >> kristen fisher reporting live from montgomery county. a baby is back with his family after the car he was strapped in was carjacked right from his homemaking for a pretty emotional morning for his mom. delia goncalves picks up the story from the scene in southeast d.c. >> reporter: andrea, it was certainly a frightening ordeal early this morning. however, it came to an end about three hours ago when that baby boy was returned to his family here in southeast. inside the family home you can see some relatives are outside on the front porch.

they just wrapped up speaking to investigators about this morning's events. his mother's arms after police say a carjacking suspect ripped him from the family home in southeast. >> she said he's in my house right now. they said they stole my car and my baby is in the car. oh, my god. it's like the worst feeling. you know you live in a community where these things happen but you're like wow, it actually happened to me. >> reporter: the baby's aunt says the garage door was open. the car was running after mom loaded the 5-month-old in his car seat, she returned to the house to retrieve the second child. that's when the suspect took off with the vehicle. after an amber alert, the car was located about a half an hour later on rail street in capitol heights one mile away. the little boy unharmed. canines were called in to search for the suspect who fled on foot. >> for the grace of god we have our nephew, my sister has her

son back. >> reporter: a very grateful family this afternoon. i can tell you maryland state police are helping mpd and prince george's county police in the search for that suspect. maryland state police have now called in the blood hounds to search for the the suspects. we'll have much more on this story as we await family members to speak to us about exactly what happened this morning and the happy reunion. we'll have much more on this story coming up a little later today. andrea, back to you. >> thank you, delia goncalves with that live update. happy news from southeast d.c. the man accused of setting a fear that seriously injured several d.c. fortunates will have to spend a year behind -- firefighters will have to spend a year behind bars. maurice dews will face three years supervised release. more than a dozen people are under arrest and charged with selling stolen electronic

devices. d.c. police announced the roundup last night after a three and a half week sting. officers recovered more than a hundred cell phones, ipads, playstations and other devices. mayor vincent gray said officers targeted areas where high numbers of robberies and thefts of electronics were happening. that includes the snatch and grabs at metro stops and on the streets. in some cases business owners were encouraging people to steal electronics and sell them to the store. in turn, owners would sell them to customers. d.c. police chief cathy lanier says some officers had to think like the criminals in order to catch them. >> we also used modern technology and good old cash for tips to get where we are today. >> the district of columbia is a place of law and order and either i nor chief lanier will tolerate any crime on our streets. every d.c. resident has trite walk our neighborhoods in safety and confidence. >> if you believe your stolen

property is part of this theft ring, the police department will be setting up a website for victims to try and identify their belongings. you must be able to describe your belongings if you still have the receipt or the serial numbers, bring them with you when you go to claim your items. charges have been dropped against a part-time montgomery county schoolteacher. 47-year-old scott spear was accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old female richard montgomery high school student. prosecutors say they were forced to drop the charges because spear is only a part- time employee and you have to be a full-time employee to go forward. spear says he's never done anything inappropriate with a student. montgomery county schools says it will conduct its own investigation. hundreds of demonstrators marched through the streets in jaha -- gentleman hall back,

afghanistan. -- the protesters are demanding a public trial ever the soldier who attacked people in two villages killing nine children and three women. today during a memorial service for victims of sunday's shooting, taliban militants opened fire killing an afghan soldier. the republican candidates are in the soul of the south trying to get all the conservative voters they can muster. we'll take a look at the challenges in less than two minutes.

the race for the republican presidential nomination focuses on the deep south today with primaries in alabama and mississippi. they're high stakes contests for each of the candidates as rick santorum supporters call on newt gingrich to drop out of the race. >> reporter: during his final push for votes in birmingham, alabama, newt gingrich told a crowd of republicans he's in the race for the long haul. >> i do not believe the other two candidates can beat obama and i believe this race is the most important in our lifetime, and i will not leave the field. >> reporter: gingrich's strategy has been the focus on southern states to reenergize

his campaign. the latest polls show he's in a fight for first or second in both alabama and mississippi going into primary day. rick santorum supporters have called up gingrich to drop out so the conservative base can rally behind the former pennsylvania senator. santorum says it's time for this to be a two-man race. >> whether he pulls it out or not, where does he go from here? we go next to illinois and he's sitting at 10% in the state of illinois. we're at 31%. >> reporter: a new cbs-"new york times" poll shows nationally rick santorum has a four-point lead over mitt romney among likely republican primary voters. but the survey also reveals 73% of those polled think it's romney who will end up clinching the nomination. the former massachusetts governor didn't let the weather stop him from campaigning in mobile, alabama monday. >> if you think washington is a mess, i hope you'll send me there so i can fix it. >> reporter: romney's looking to pull off at least one victory in the south today to prove he can win over

evangelical voters and carry very conservative states. cbs news, washington. >> ron paul didn't actively campaign in alabama and mississippi. there are also caucuses today in hawaii. rising gas prices are taking a political toll on president obama. prices at the pump jumped another 3.6 cents in the past week. the national average is about $3.82 a gallon according to the energy information survey. the latest cbs news-"new york times" poll shows it's at 41%, down from 50% last month, president obama's approval. a delta plane rolled off the taxi way in atlanta. mechanics were testing the engines when they experienced a problem with the braking system this morning. no passengers were aboard at the time. no workers were injured but the

without any hesitation, howard called today's forecast stupendous. >> so far. so far. >> at this hour, 12:16:15 stupendous. >> some stronger thunderstorms may develop. so that's the only thing we have to worry about. i think it will happen after the 3:00 hour. so the next few hours get out, soak it up, love it. because this is really not where we should be for this time of year. we should be in the mid-50s for highs. this afternoon we're going into the upper 70s, if not 80 in a few spots. the sunshine with us. 78 degrees at 3:00 p.m. right now we have a southerly wind. it goes southwesterly.

nationals temps will jump like 5 degrees very quickly. as we go through the latter part of the afternoon, this is where we've got the chances for ciewsm storms as temperatures will -- for a couple of storms as temperatures will be dropping but still mild. by 9:00 p.m. we should be pretty much done with any showers that pop up. still the upper 60s. lows tonight about 55 downtown. upper 40s in the cold spots. even that's about average. here we go. last night we had the showers quickly out in the atlantic. what i'm watching for the afternoon, you see this thin line right here coming through williamsport, back down past pittsburgh, that as it gets into the warmer air that we're enjoying this afternoon, that could pop up into some showers and storms. this morning it was a mild one. only got down to 56 in d.c. some areas like fredricksburg 59. our average high is 55. the low should be 37. we were about 19 above to start. already pushing 70. 69 here in d.c. upper 50s in annapolis. wind off the water.

staying cool right along the bay but look out west, it's 75 in culpeper. 74 in martinsburg. winchester 72 along with man fan sas -- manassas, leesburg. a gorgeous hour. just a couple of fair weather clouds. dew points in the mid-50s so the moisture is returning. the south winds at 11, just a touch of a breeze. nationally look at the middle of the country. pretty quiet. tremendous storm coming on shore now on the west coast and another one to follow. so they're going to get more rain, more mountain snows. we're just waiting for this guy, the tail end right here. this line of showers and storms to come through and see how much it pops as we get into the afternoon. as we look at the future cast, here we go. stop the clock at 4:00 p.m. notice up toward montgomery county and this might be here, might be there. it's computer model. it's not the gospel but it's pretty good. showers popping. a few more showers pop through 6:15 and even through 8:00,

we can see overhead what is already prepared here. >> pork belly that we're doing is being braised for about five hours with aromatics. i've got cherries that have been put into like a jelly with vanilla bean. and a little bit of toasted pa len take -- pal len take -- palenta plate. a lot of my food we do is kind of like on the senses. a little bit of crispy, a little savory, a little bit of sweet. especially at this time of year now, it's like 70 -- i don't even know what it is. we've got a patio that wraps around the entire restaurant. we've got tons of people that are enjoying the weather right now as we speak enjoying lunch. even at dinner time last night.

>> it looks like a very simple recipe. we were talking about why pork bellies. howard thinks of trading. you think of low country food almost. but you say it's bacon. >> it is. it's raw bacon. it hasn't been cooked. it hasn't been cured. it hasn't been smoked, salted. it's just the actual slab. what we do is we take that and we cook it in a stock and then what you have is you can actually trim the fat off. you can have a crispy skin if you want. it's succulent. it's moist. it's really juicy, very, very flavorful. and because what it is, it's just pure, no fat at all, just the actual meat. >> so it's good for you. howard is coming n. we're talking pork bellies and we want michael to come in super"spamalot." you also suggest a wine to go along with this. >> yes. we have a wine that melds itself very well with the fat,
