street today. >> ken molestina live in rockville where police believe they have zeroed in on him. >> reporter: what a day this has been today for the law enforcement community out here in montgomery county, as well as the residents here. right now i'm joined by police chief major. he talked to us about the very latest. we understand you all believe the suspect in today's case has in fact committed suicide; is that correct? >> we had information earlier this evening that he was in a home here in 800 block of fordham street in rockville. we got folks surrounding the house very quickly and were able to get the people in the house out, with the exception of the suspect. and while our tactical units were around the house, they heard what they believed was a gunshot. later on, we tried to make contact with the suspect inside. we received no response. we were able to see the suspect laying in a hallway in the
1:39 am
house, so the tactical units entered the house and determined that the subject was deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. and there was a rifle laying next to him. we believe it was a self- inflicted gunshot wound. >> do you believe it was the same rifle used earlier today? >> may have been. we obviously are going to need to check that. it may have been. >> chief, throughout the day, there was a lot of concern throughout the entire community this man was on the loose. talk a little about what it was like for law enforcement throughout the day to get us to the point where we're at right now. what was that like? >> well, we actually had officers around at least a half a dozen locations. we were watching a number of vehicles, some locations where the suspect had made threats against certain individuals, so we had folks all over the county trying to make sure no one else was harmed. the suspect made threats against a number of people to

include members of his family, so we were insuring their safety as well. so certainly we were on edge to say the least, but i can't say enough good things about the men and women of this police department. the officers, the detectives who were working this case nonstop. they did not stop throughout the day to make sure we were able to locate this individual and keep anybody else out of harm's way. >> all right, chief major, thank you very much for your time and thank you for speaking to us. there you have it. the statement that chief major just gave this ordeal that lasted all throughout the day is finally overnight let's go ahead and recap some of the events that led us up to this point that we're at right now. this all started, folks, at 9:39 this morning in kensington along connecticut and noels. this is right in front of the same shell gas station are where one of the d.c. snipers killed someone years ago. here's what happened according to police. they say that the suspect was stopped at a red light.

he had fired his gun, killed a woman in the car. the woman was later identified as heather lynn mcgwire. police say the suspect then opened the door of that car, threw her out and then drove off. soon after that is when phillip gilberti was named a suspect in this investigation. that's when police began a region wide search for phillip. they searched throughout kensington, throughout aspen hill, all areas of montgomery county. late this evening they got a tip he may have been here in the college gardens area. that's why police came out to this area, a s.w.a.t. team was here just like you heard chief major explain. they located the house they believed he was at. when they did have an opportunity to look inside, they found the suspect dead inside from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. of course, police are still going to be out here for a good portion of the night. the good news here, guys, is that the suspect is no longer

[ cheers and applause ] >> we will compete everywhere. the time is now for conservatives to pull together. the time is now to make sure, to make sure that we have the best chance to win this election and the best chance to win this election is to nominate a conservative to go up against barack obama who can take him on on every issue. [ cheers and applause ] >> rick santorum obviously believes he's the guy to do that. nick gingrich still at the podium had similar thoughts, says he's staying in. >> this is proportional representation. we're going to leave alabama and mississippi with a substantial number of delegates, increasing our total going towards tampa, and we are very grateful to you, because you made that out come possible, and with your help, we're going to take a much

career. he's such a devoted teacher, if anything, too devoted. and maybe that's part of the reason that we have the problem that we have here. >> for now, spear remains on suspension pending the outcome of the school system investigation. the criminal charges were dropped yesterday because the girl in question is actually old enough to consent to sex under the law. and spear is just a volunteer track coach at montgomery highwhere the girl is an athlete and that lets him off the hook under state law. a stunning development in our ongoing 9 news now investigation into a northwest d.c. store we caught allegedly selling alcohol to minors again and again. town square market owner richard pleaded not guilty to criminal charges. we were down at d.c. superior court for the hearing and mr. kim told us he regrets his actions. >> you're very sorry. >> yeah. >> reporter: in broken english, town square market owner
