daughter is spending spring break there. she is reported safe and sound. fairfax county police are investigating a sexual assault in burke. a 16-year-old says she was walking home from woodson high school when she was grabbed in the neck from behind. the attacker ran off. the girl screamed and ran to a nearby home for help. police are investigating whether this attack is related to the sexual assault of a 24- year-old last wednesday. an attorney for the family of a slained florida teenager says she has a corroborating witness that says trayvon martin was not the aggress cor when aggressor. >> reporter: florida prosecutors are asking a grand jury to look into the shooting death of trayvon martin. a neighborhood watch volunteer shot the black stager dead after a confrontation in

central florida. >> our hope and belief and whatever we can come up with that they will arrest george zimmerman for the murder of trayvon martin. >> zimmerman claims it was self-defense. the right to stand their ground and use led di force if threatened. the attorney for the martin family says the boy was not the aggressor. >> he had a 9 mm gun. trayvon martin had a bag of skittles. >> benjamin played a tape recording of a young girl who was allegedly on the phone with martin just seconds before he was shot and killed. >> she is traumatized over this. >> girl told the family attorney that martin said he was being followed. >> she tells him, oh, be careful. just run home. >> he will turn over the witnesses information to the justice department because the family does not trust the local

authorities. terrell brown, cbs news. and the grand jury on this one will convene april 10. anita. >> tonight, we're taking a closer look at bullying allegations inside a silver spring elementary school. these allegations are not against the school. they are directed at school's principal. six teachers filed a lawsuit against floyd and the county school board alleging bullying intentional, emotional distress. bruce leshan is live at montgomery county where they filed that lawsuit. bruce. >> yeah, anita. usually it is the kids accusing other kids of bullying. in this case, it is the teachers accusing their principal of bullying them. they say the school board has ignored their complaints, so they are turning here to the circuit court. >> i got to the point where i cried all the way to work in my car and i cried all the way home. >> fifth grade teacher says

the bullying, intimidation, and harassment by principal floyd starnes has gotten so bad, she has been forced to take medical leave after 22 years teaching and a decade at kemp mill. >> what you're doing to my children is wrong. >> she claimed he had illegally jammed her classroom with struggling children, many of them special needs. >> to have the lowest students in a grade level all put into one class is unheard of. >> with no help. >> no help at all. >> the lawsuit alleges starnes calls male teachers doll, honey, sweety, and babe. that he touched, pinched, at least one of those teachers in a sexual way. he had taken a child into his small closet and shut the door where the two remained alone for 30 minutes. >> he retaliates.

he falsifies documents on evaluation. would you like it if your boss touched you? >> last year, the teaches alleged half of their colleagues fled when they see as a hostile work environment. 100% of teachers once recommended kemp mill as a good place to work. but that has fallen precipitously since starnes arrived. >> the year following his first year on the job, the survey had fallen to under 30% and it's currently 9.8%. >> now, a school spokesman has just put out a statement saying it is unfortunate that these teachers are using the media, he said, to make accusations that have thus far proven to be overwelmingly false and erroneous against this principal. he says that these same allegations by some of these same individuals have already

delia goncalves has a look at the damage. >> reporter: the pictures are devastating and firefighters hasn't seen anything like this in some time. you can see the lightning bolt blasted through this tree, shattering it to bits. and it traveled through the roots to the house. and within seconds, his home was up in flames. >> the back part was burned where i had thousands of blocks. >> reporter: they rushed out of their house. >> fire was billowing out of the back of the house. >> reporter: the force of the strike so severe, it shattered the tree, sending a massive branch knocking down the fence and landing in a neighbor's yard. now full of charred, household items, remains of a life fully lived inside this home

destroyed in an instant by mother nature. >> reporter: the homeowner is going through the house trying to uncover many of the books, but as far as the furniture, it's a complete loss. thankfully, they both made it out safely. in silver spring, delia goncalves, 9news now. >> electricity was knocked out to the entire neighborhood, but it's now back on. tonight at 11:00, we've got something unprecedented to share with you. video tape shot from inside a car just moments before a

violent crash ended in tragedy. like so many deadly crashes, this one involved alcohol and speed. andrea mccarren got ahold of this video. andrea. >> derek, as you know, we had a serious newsroom debate about whether or not to air this video tape. no one has ever seen anything like it, but the young woman who shot the video made a compelling case. she urged us to show it in hopes that others won't make the same mistake she and others did. here's an excerpt from tonight's story. >> buckled into the front passenger seat, video taping her night out with two friends. the police investigation revealed their car was traveling at 94 miles per hour in a 40-mile per hour zone. >> i wouldn't want anyone else, not even my worst enemy to walk into my shoes right now. >> car barreled over a chain link fence and plowed into a brick embankment, the impact so

voters deliver the polls. killing women and children in afghanistan spent a second day meeting with his attorney. >> randall is at the white house where the obama administration said the incident has not changed u.s. policy. >> reporter: told his attorney he has no memory of the time when 16 afghan civilians, including nine children, were murdered. john henry brown says his client is in shock. >> he is being watched very carefully. i'm concerned about his being a danger to himself. >> brown said bails was in custody, is worried about retaliation against his fellow soldiers in afghanistan. the killings sparked protests, calling for u.s. forces to leave, but the top u.s. commander told a congressional committee the mission remains the same. >> i wish i could tell you this was simple, but that's not

flying up in the air. and i just purchased a camera today and i told my wife to pull it out and stayed there for 30, 45 minutes and got it all on film. >> one woman saw three funnel clouds in rapid succession near her home and winds ripped the roof off a barn. 13 homes or businesses were damaged. fortunately, no one was hurt. this is why topper says don't ever drive through high water. luckily someone in a jeep came by and picked him up. heavy rain put that area through a flash flood warning. it takes two feet of rushing water to carry away vehicles as big as an suv. you can see that one got stuck. we'll take it out to you. >> that's a nice oudy that got stuck. he's going to be ruining the day. >> it's dangerous for your life. it's not so good for the car. >> you never know. you can completely under

southeastward. again, a dry commute home. we'll keep the chance of a shower or thunderstorm early tonight, but right now, we have a clean sweep, which is nice. look at the temperatures. 73 in arlington. 70 in bethesda. 71 in rockville. we have a 68 up in gaithersburg. they have sweaters on there. 74 in springfield and 70 in college park. so here's the deal. miles and then even warmer and early thunderstorm possible tonight, but primarily west. the morning fog possible tomorrow. warmer on thursday. that will increase our chance for a thunderstorm. and even warmer on friday. by that, we mean, we'll probably top 08 degrees on friday. here's our future cast. showers to the west. early in the morning, some showers to the west. notice everything is green. no yellows or oranges or anything, but again, we talk ed about this yesterday. we are trading mild air for the chance of showers.

by this time tomorrow, showers up 270 and route 7. nothing heavy. and maybe some showers early on thursday morning. for tonight, we'll just say partly to mostly cloudy, mild. early thunderstorm possible. mainly west. some fog possible last. low temperatures in the 50s and winds easterly. next seven days. it gets warmer. again, an increased chance of a thunderstorm. in the low 80s on friday. a thunderstorm possible. we delayed the cooler air. showers and thunderstorms possible, but in the mid 70s and around 70. and we fall back in the 60s on monday and tuesday, which is not too bad. all right, the best shot. this is pretty good. this is a peach orchard and say say the folks out here in martinsburg, west virginia, say this is the earliest they can see the peaches bloom. not good if we get a frost. this was taken three days ago. if you want to submit a best

final good-bye to heather mcguire. she is the 36-year-old woman killed during a domestic dispute in kensington last week. her funeral took place this afternoon at st. elizabeth catholic church in rockville. investigators say her estranged husband, phillip gilberti shot her in the head and dumped her body on to connecticut avenue. gilberti later committed suicide. prosecutors say he had a long record of domestic abuse. flags are being flown at half staff in maryland many memory of a maryland army national guard major killed in afghanistan. 48-year-old major from parkville was buried with full military honors today at arlington national cemetery. they were killed last month in an attack at the interior ministry in cobble. the taliban is claiming responsibility. hundreds of computers that were used at the old walter reid campus have a brand-new home. they were donated to area schools today all part of the

the old cherry blossoms began to bloom last week, but today is actually the first official day of the big annual festival. >> and about a million people are expected to visit the district over the next five weeks and of course, that means lots of parking tickets for the city. kristin fisher joins us live from the title basin and a paddle boat. she's been chilling, taking in the scenes today. i guess somebody has to do it, kristin. >> reporter: it was actually a long walk over here with a lot of heavy equipment. so it hasn't been all relaxing. i tell you what, this morning, look what a beautiful day it turned out to be for the first day of the cherry blossom festival. this festival brings in $130 million every year.

and that money comes from tourists staying in hotels, eating in restaurants, riding in paddle boats, and parking illegally. >> came back and we have a $50 ticket. >> reporter: these are two of the hundreds, maybe thousands of cherry blossom visitors that will get parking tickets during the festival. >> i'm not so happy right now. >> just a warning. 68,000 parking tickets issued over the last cherry blossom festival period. please, tourists, beware. be warned. >> reporter: anderson with aaa says last year there were more parking tickets than during any other time of the year. >> do you give out more tickets during the cherry blossom festival than other times of the year? >> no comment. >> reporter: even if you need the meter, you can get a ticket. >> many times it takes a phd

to figure out the signings. there are exceptions, and then another few feet away, there's another sign that contradicts the first. >> there's a sign that says four hour parking. get a picture of that right there. but when you get a close up of the actual meter, it says two hour time limit. >> reporter: some locals like the city taking money from out of towners. >> i think it's a good idea. >> you like it, why? >> they need the money. >> reporter: most people seem to think it could hurt the city in the long run. >> it's going to put a damper on d.c. tourism. who will want to come here and pay parking tickets? >> i'll never come back here again. >> reporter: now of course, it is no fun getting down here, but once you're down in the title basin, it is just beautiful. and you know, it is the first day of the festival, but it is already peek bloom. peek bloom is going to last today through friday. it's over before the weekend

street. house subcommittee held a hearing and susan, the granddaughter of our 34th president was among the witnesses. she says the design focuses too much on eisenhower's humble roots and not his many accomplishments. frank gary was hired to design the memorial and he has written a letter saying he is open to design changes. an exhibit focusing on the titanic is now on display at the national postal museum. the titanic operated as the world's largest post offices. in the end, both had disastrous endings. art facts and photographs of the titanic that have never been seen before are on display at the postal museum. life of john wayne gacy is the subject of a new gallery.

caught on tape, three people rescued off the coast of sai sanoma county, california. >> pulled a good samaritan off the waters. >> 12-year-old made it to shore, but the younger boy was struggling. his dad jumped in. all three drifted 50 yards from the beach. a park officer stayed with the three and helped them keep afloat. >> adult was floaten on his back. he was trying to conserve energy. and the boy was holding on to him very tightly around the neck. >> three were treated for hypothermia. park officials say the beach has a strong rip tide and current situation right now and it is easy for visitors to under estimate the strength of the tide. maryland's attorney general is offering up advice tonight for parents and teens about internet privacy. attorney general, doug gansler

in tonight's consumer alert, complaints the hot new ipad may be too hot. apple's comment boards are being flooded by people saying the tablets are getting too hot to hold. the company says the devices are performing within their specifications and if you have a concern, you should call apple care. ereaders, tablets, and other gadgets may be able to be on planes. it is unlikely the agency will

approve the use of smart phones. a pilot program is taking off at reagan national airport and delta airlines is one of the first air carriers to jump in. the hope is that some passengers will actually like the idea of not having to disrobe to get on to a flight. >> this has become a routine travel drill for airline passengers. >> i'm used to shoeless, jacketless, the whole nine yards. >> now frequent delta fliers can keep on their shoes. partnered with the security administration to offer trusted travelers a prescreen option. >> if we determined a passenger is eligible for expedited screening through the prescreening process, that information will be embedded in the bar code on the boarding pass. >> airline recommends high valued passengers to the tsa to be prescreened. they can then volunteer to give their personal information to be approved for the advanced
