good morning, and thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. the next republican primary is saturday in louisiana. rick santorum is pinning his hopes on a strong showing there after getting trounced by mitt romney in yesterday's illinois vote. a double digit win in illinois, outspending his opponents 7-1 in tv ads and grabbed his third primary victory in a row. cbs news estimates romney won 54 delegates giving him a total of 534 of 1,044 needed for the nomination. susan mcginnis is in washington to break down all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. romney is just about halfway there, almost halfway there delegateways, so strong position. illinois was a must win for both romney and santorum. despite romney taking illinois, santorum and for that matter all

of the candidates, show no sign of giving up. mitt romney thanked supporters in illinois for his double-digit win over rick santorum. & >> what a night. wow. >> reporter: and immediately turned his focus to defeating president obama in november. >> it's time to say these words -- this word -- enough. we've had enough. >> reporter: exit polls showed the economy was the most important issue among voters in illinois. mitt romney says it's his number one priority. >> i'm running for president because i have the experience and the vision to get us out of this mess. >> reporter: cbs news estimates romney will take 41 of illinois's 54 delegates, widening his overall lead. >> at some point romney gets to be able to say, these other guys are spoilers. i'm going to get there. why are we dragging this out? why aren't we talking about president obama? >> reporter: rick santorum is downplaying his second place finish. >> we did what we had to do. we got the delegates we could

get. we're feeling good. again, it's very clear. it's a two-person race. >> reporter: santorum is already looking ahead to the next contest. he'll campaign today in louisiana and predicts he'll pull off a big victory on saturday. newt gingrich finished fourth last night and is also looking to gain momentum from the southern state. >> i think we have a very, very good chance to win a lot of delegates here in louisiana. >> please welcome ron paul. >> reporter: ron paul spent primary night in california and joked with jay leno on "the tonight show". >> i think the other three should just get out of the race. >> reporter: paul finished third and in last place in delegates but he insists his campaign will go all the way to the convention. no doubt romney is in the best position to clinch this nomination. at the current pace, that will happen in june. to one is counting out an upset, though. santorum could do very well in louisiana and his home state has yet to vote. that happens in april. >> we'll be watching.

in the middle east. police believe he shot and killed a rabbi and three children on monday and is also responsible for the murder of three french paratroopers. the victims of monday's shooting in toulouse, a rabbi, and another child were buried today in israel. the lawyer for army sergeant bales says his client is, quote, a soldier's soldier. john henry browne has met with bales for 11 hours over the past two days. bales is being held at ft. leavenworth in kansas. browne says his client doesn't remember what happened the night of the massacre. he says he plans to travel to afghanistan to get his own evidence. >> i don't know about the evidence in this case. i don't know that the government's going to prove much. there's no forensic evidence. >> a tacoma, washington, newspaper reports bales was arrested ten years ago for a drunken assault on a casino

security guard. to the severe weather that continues to plague the south central united states. more heavy rain is forecast through tomorrow. flash flood warnings have been issued for parts of louisiana, arkansas, texas, oklahoma and missouri. folks in oklahoma are trying to recover from yesterday's flooding and high water. near tulsa yesterday, the thunder was so loud, residents thought it was an earthquake. there are no reports of serious injuries following the biggest earthquake to hit mexico since 1985, but yesterday's powerful quake damaged at least 800 homes. another 60 have totally collapsed. there's been at least one substantial aftershock and in mexico city, hundreds of mile from the quake's center, telephone service was knocked out. we report from the mexican capital. >> reporter: mexican officials are assessing the damage following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake in southern mexico. buildings are cracked and tourists are shaken. >> we were on the 20th floor. everything started shaking.

the windows were shaking. i sat on the floor and it was very scary. >> reporter: the quake struck just after noon and was centered near the resort town of acapulco. buildings rattled as far away as mexico city. >> all of a sudden people were running along. we joined. when we reached the front entrance we could feel the force. saw the trees moving. said, this is an earthquake. >> reporter: the mexico city, the pedestrian bridge crashed down on a mini bus. luckily, the bus was empty. this area is prone to very large earthquakes. in 1985 a 7.9 magnitude earthquake killed nearly 10,000 people. and this was the strongest earthquake since then. in oaxaca, tuesday's quake stopped power and set off alarms. people gathered in the streets, waiting for word that was safe to go back inside.

a recent psychological study found those with high friend count tend to be narcissistic. means they love themselves too much. they are unlikely to accept friend requests from strangers. wait, i do that. the study surveyed almost 300 people, mostly college students. on to the "cbs moneywatch" and one of my facebook friends, we'll talk to ashley morrison about new concerns that are troubling the greek economy and the new ipad that is simply too hot to handle. hey there, ashley. >> good morning to you. i think we might need to do some defriending. very little movement on the asian markets this morning. japan's nikkei added half a% while hong kong's hang seng gave back a fraction. that could signal a turn-around for the u.s. housing market. despite that news, stocks on wall street fell. the dow lost nearly 69 points while the nasdaq fell four.

the greek parliament approved the latest bailout loan from the eurozone countries this morning. but some of greece's creditors remain concerned the country's austerity measures may not do enough to lower its debt. and that could mean a third bailout would be needed to rescue greece from default. the airline industry is keeping a close watch on the rising cost of oil and the tensions in iran. according to an aviation trade association, airlines could lose more than $5 billion this year if oil prices spiked to $150 a barrel. prices are now just under $107 a barrel, a nine-month high. the trade group says airlines are already expecting to see earnings decline because of rising fuel costs. and sales of apple's new ipad have been sizzling but so are the hands of the people using them. according to a study by "consumer reports" the new tablet reached a temperature of 116 degrees while a game was running.

that's 13 degrees hotter than the ipad 2 under the same circumstances. here's a look at today's forecast. new york, morning fog but 72 degrees. miami, showers, 83. chicago, partly sunny, 79. dallas, mostly cloudy, 69. los angeles, sunny, 72. now for a check of the national forecast. louisiana, arkansas and western missouri will get more flood-producing rain and possible tornadoes today. the thunderstorms are also likely in the southeast, the southern mid-atlantic and the northern plains. there will be more record high temperatures from the western great lakes to the northeast. rain and mountain snow will continue in the northwest. in sports, peyton manning got an early birthday present, an orange denver broncos jersey. manning, who turns 37 on saturday, is the bronco's new quarterback. man willing wear his familiar 18, the number brought out of retirement with the blessing of the bronco's first quarterback. >> i'm thrilled to be here.

they believe killed four people at a jewish school in toulouse. two police officers have been wounded. the suspect claims to be connected to al qaeda and says he'll surrender this afternoon. officials in florida are under growing pressure to file charges against a neighborhood watch member who admits he shot and killed an unarmed black teenager. hundreds rallied at a church in sanford last night, demanding justice. later marched in orlando to the town's center. earlier in tallahassee protesters marched to the state capital and met with the governor. bob orr has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: in the three weeks since trayvon martin was killed in this gated community, neighborhood watchman george zimmerman claims he shot him in self-defense but the attorney for martin's family says the unarmed teenager was targeted because of his race. >> arrest george zimmerman for the killing of trayvon martin in

cold blood today. >> reporter: he said on the night of the shooting, martin was heading home from the store and on the phone with his girlfriend. in a telephone interview, the young woman told crump she listened as martin was suddenly confronted by a stranger. the girlfriend said she urged martin to run away and he responded, he would walk fast. at around the same time, zimmerman also made a call to the sanford, florida, police to report a suspicious person in his neighborhood. >> he's got his hands in his waistband. and he's a black male. >> are you following him? >> yeah. >> okay. we don't need to you do that. >> reporter: what happened next is the critical question. a law enforcement says zimmerman said he started retreating to his car and only fired his weapon after martin jumped him from behind. zimmerman has a license to carry

a gun. florida law allows people to use lethal force in self-defense. but crump insists zimmerman was the aggressor. records show zimmerman is a frequent caller to police w 46 calls in the last year, often reporting african-american. now justice department civil rights division says they will determine if a hate crime has occurr occurred. state prosecutors in florida have a wider criminal investigation. if the grand jury there returns an indictment, zimmerman could face charges ranging from mans, perhaps murder, but for now he remains free, not charged with any crime. bob orr, cbs news, washington. coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning," the late on mitt romney's huge win in illinois. an investigation into counterfeit cancer drugs. you want to see this.

mr. bern bernstein. clouds, fog. weather wise let's look at the day planner. >> six weeks of winter total. >> 60 degrees with the clouds. still mostly cloudy but like yesterday, we'll get the sun this afternoon. back in the low, possibly mid- 70s south and west of d.c. we are looking at a chance of a shower mainly south and west of washington. we're looking at showers and lightning earlier in places like dahlgren, 301 over toward richmond. you see in king george and southern maryland we've had some of those showers. this is live doppler 9000 hd. colonial beach to route 17 a few leftover showers there. point lookout in st. mary's county, that's it for the rain. but not the fog.

visibilities are down to a quarter mile in gaithersburg, half mile in westminster. even in the mountains and southern parts of the shenandoah valley we have low visibilities. reagan national down to a mile and a quarter. we don't have sunrise till three hours so the fog will get thicker before it gets better. 58 in leesburg to 55 in culpeper. 60 in d.c. with fog in annapolis 59 going up to the low to possibly middle 70s. it's 4:27. monika santami stepping in with a look at your time saver construction, traffic, i never know at this hour. both i guess. you have a bit of construction on the west side of town on the beltway in annandale at the dulles toll road and of course on the inner loop of the beltway at the hien 59 interchange -- at the i-95 interchange. i think the biggest corner this morning will be the fog as howard said. reduced visibilities as you head southbound on 270 coming

down from frederick to the point where the the lanes divide. i think the best thing for you to do is of course keep your speed limits down. back to the map and this time to the east side coming in on route 50. it's going to be the fog and right through that prince george's county corridor of the beltway on the east side toward pennsylvania avenue. as you can see, you can barely see the road but a bit of traffic outside. keep your speed limits down and keep a distance in front of you as well. in my next report we'll take a look at virginia roads at 4:49. it wasn't even close. mitt romney handedly defeated rick santorum by double digits in the illinois primary. romney will pick up most of the state's 54 delegates padding his lead. >> after the loss santorum says he's now looking ahead to the louisiana primary next weekend to hopefully put another win in his column. newt gingrich says he'll be back on the campaign trail as well. susan mcginnis has more. >> reporter: mitt romney
