what's the biggest risk to a police officer or firefighter? get shot, trapped in a blaze? how about being hit by a driver who has failed to move over or slow down? believe me, the toll is horrific. bruce leshan is over the outer loop in college park and bruce, there ought to be a law. >> that's the amazing thing, derek, there is a law. there is a law that people don't seem to know about it. it's crazy how many people don't know about it, but the law says that if there's an emergency vehicle down there with its lights on, on the shoulder, you are required to move over one lane. if you can't do that safely, to slow down to a safe and prudent speed. now authorities are out with a big campaign today to try and get this message out there. search move over on youtube and the carnage is stomach churning. the latest estimate suggests nearly 400 police officers,

firefighters, highway crews, tow truck drivers, and other workers are struck and killed every year nearly 10% of all the occupational fatalities in america. >> move over, i mean, it's not that hard. >> maryland state trooper was nearly killed last year on 95. on one of his first rides with his police trainer. >> they yell at me to get out of the way and there's a concrete wall next to us. the car slammed into the back of the patrol car. >> two times in as many weeks in january of this year, maryland state troopers were hit while they were stopped on the side of the road. one of the times the trooper was actually standing on this side, on the passenger side when someone hit him and badly injured him. >> 39 to 35. >> corporal robert says he worries about it all the time. >> every day, that's probably the biggest, my biggest concern as a supervisor.

over. thank you, sir. fresh off his victory in yesterday's illinois' primary, right now he's holding a rally in maryland and that is where gary joins us live. gary on the campaign trail. >> reporter: oh man, you are always so late to the party. what do you mean holding a rally? this thing ended seconds ago. 45 minutes of disappointment for many of the hundreds of people that came to see mitt romney. the crowd over flowing that he went outside to meet with people not let in by the fire marshal. home of romney's maryland campaign chairman. maryland shares an april 3 primary date with the district of columbia. in maryland, the winners are chosen by who wins each individual congressional district and then for the winner of the statewide vote in

general. romney was here in maryland trying to get as many votes as he could by attacking president obama's economic policy. >> this president promised to cut the deficit in half. he's doubled it. he told us to get us back to work and hold unemployment below 8%. hasn't been below 8% in 37 straight months. he said he cut taxes. that hasn't happened either. this man is out of ideas and he's out of excuses and in 2012, we're going to make sure we get him out of office. >> reporter: romney has been giving no specific references to maryland, other than saying he attended a little league game for governor ehrlich's children. but romney is focusing on economic policy from the obama administration, turning his attack to that as he seems more and more secure in his ability to secure the republican nomination. >> we'll look forward to it, thank you gary for keeping me

up to date. meanwhile, romney's main challenger down playing his second place finish in illinois. he is focusing on saturday's primary in louisiana where the latest polls show he holds a 13 point advantage over mitt romney. then, april 3, voters here in the district, maryland, and wisconsin go to the polls. there's a big gap from there to april 24 when five states, including new york and pennsylvania hold their primary. one for the ages. u.s. senator is being honored as the longest serving woman in congress. the maryland democrat was first elected to the house of representatives in 1975. the senate in 1986. senate majority leader, harry reid, is among those recognizing her for her service. >> she is truly a trailblazer. we recognize barbra's achievement today and her outstanding record with the state of maryland. >> the senator broke the

record for the longest serving woman in congress. last weekend when she bypassed representative edith rogers of massachusetts. a nigerian woman under arrest following a record heroin bust out at dulles airport. 52-year-old bola ingested 180 thumb sized pellets all filled up with the drug. he told custom agents he was there to visit her brother, but couldn't provide a description of her. it is worth about $150,000. turned over to immigration and homeland security agents. sentencing was handed down for a former mt. rainier police officer convicted in a bizarre sexual assault case. prosecutors say gene lured a man to his house, made sexual advances and shot him several times as he tried to flee. the former officer was ordered to spend the next ten years in prison. talked about the case later in

robert griffin iii participated at baylor university. we got to see what all the hype was about surrounding the heisman winner and boy was he impressive today. rg3 completed 95% of his passes. complete with swift foot work, showing everyone why the redskins paid so much to move up in the draft to get him. now rg3 didn't necessarily need to participate today. but he enjoyed hitting the field with his teammates one last time. >> they said it was the biggest pro day of all time at baylor. it was pretty exciting. just a few weeks ago, i was a freshman. 198-pounds and now i'm at my proday, so that was kind of surreal. but other than that, i tried to not be nervous. >> and news regarding one of the most recognizable qb's, tim tebow is apparently on the move. the broncos are currently negotiating with the new york jets for the former heisman trophy winner. reports earlier stated a deal

was done to shift tebow to the big apple. those talks have hit a snag regarding money. tebow became expendable after the broncos signed peyton manning to a five year contract yesterday. and the nfl brought down the sledge hammer on the new orleans saints for their role in bounty gate. shaun payton has been suspended for a year. the team loses two second round draft picks and fined several thousand dollars. gregg williams, the man accused of orchestrating the pay for pain scheme has been suspended indefinitely. the nfl did announce they have closed the investigation on the redskins saying there's no evidence that shows they ran a similar scheme that the saints did in new orleans. coming up later, we'll check in with a reporter from waco, texas, who was at rg3's proday and get his take on everything that happened today. derek, back over to you. >> can't get enough of that rg3. >> exciting. coming up on 9news, the search for the man suspected of

police in france say they have cornered that suspect in monday's deadly shooting at a jewish school. >> he is refusing to give himself up. tina reports. >> reporter: french police teams are preparing to storm an apartment building in the city to capture a suspected killer. they have been locked in a tense standoff with mohammad who shot at them earlier this morning. police say the 24-year-old frenchman drove to a local jewish school on his motorcycle monday and killed teacher, jonathan sadler, his two young sons and a little girl. hundreds of mourners gathered to bury the victims. he vowed the country would

fight hate crimes. president nicolas sarkozy who is running for reelection in five weeks said france must remain united. police believe mara murdered three french soldiers at an atm earlier this month and again escaped on a motorcycle. france's interior minister says the suspect claims to have connections to al-qaeda. mara was seeking pay back for the killing of palestinian children in the middle east and the french army's involvement in afghanistan. afghan authorities say mara was arrested for bomb making five years ago, but escaped in 2008 during a taliban prison break. tina, cbs news. the french interior minister says the suspect now plans to turn himself in at night fall to be more discreet. police say the suspect injured at least two officers when he shot at them from a window. authorities are on the scene of a house explosion in

ohio. firefighters were called a few hours ago. by the time they got there, they found two sides of the house destroyed. no one was hurt and neighbors say that home is vacant. a bold boulder crushed two homes in ohio. the rock damaged a hogs and knocked down some utility lines. look at that thing. it happened in athens. that's near columbus. the family was home at the time, but nobody was hurt because they were in the back of the house away from where that boulder landed. fairfax county continued its tornado response drill today. 16 tornadoes have hit the county since the 1950s and last year was the second most active and deadly season in virginia. now emergency response officials are practicing a worse case scenario, the exercise is called operation enduring collaboration. it started yesterday.

reminiscent, and consequently, these will move eastward. some of this energy and some of this moisture gets in here in pieces on thursday and friday and particularly on saturday and sunday. right now, we have some low clouds, as you saw in the live cam, breaks in the clouds now that will be the case overnight. temperatures, still not bad. 66 in bethesda. no complaints yet from bethesda. 67 down in springfield. 67 in reston. and even 67 in rockville. 68 in college park. 67 also in beltsville. so, here's the deal. warm finish to the week. more fog late tonight. some morning fog tomorrow. warmer tomorrow, though, afternoon thunderstorm possible. even warmer on friday and even a better chance of an afternoon or evening thunderstorm. again, some of those could be hefty on friday. partly to mostly cloudy tonight, mild, fog returns. winds winds out of the southeast. the wind is what kept these clouds with us all day.

the good news, tomorrow, the winds will turn southwesterly, that will dry us out. becoming partly cloudy and mild. some fog early. temperatures in the 50s and 60s and winds southwest at 10. which is a good thing. by afternoon, partly cloudy and warmer. shower or thunderstorm possible. temperatures between 75 and 80. winds southwesterly at 10. high temperatures, we're looking at upper 70s pretty much everywhere, especially in arlington. because the way the clouds will burn off, warmer to the west. 78 in reston. and 78 in fairfax. we're looking at 75 or 76 in college park. all right, let's talk about the next seven days. we're looking at temperatures topping out around 80. that's like june. and on saturday, showers and thunderstorms. temperatures back in the mid 70s. cooler on sunday with light rain and showers. not so much thunderstorms on sunday. that will put us back in the mid 60s and looking at a nice stretch of weather. mid 60s with sunshine monday and tuesday and back in the mid

the voting of the name for metro's new silver line is now over. they conducted a new survey on metro's silver line out to dulles and the voting ended today at 5:00 p.m. metro's board of directors has to approve the name. we'll wait and see what they pick. obey the pedestrian rules of the road or be prepared to pay a penalty. police are teaming up with the council of governments in a new walker safety program. it is called street smart. officers were outed a number of

dangerous intersections to get their message across. police say they plan to ramp up their presence on the streets and highways to ensure pedestrians are safe and that they are also following the rules. some frustrating moments for commuters who take massachusetts avenue under thomas circle this morning. that's a tractor trailer. it got stuck. literally shutting down one lane of traffic. you know how busy that area is. once the driver released air from the truck's tires, he was able to get it out of there. no word if police plan to sight that driver. >> the federal government wants to put bus safety in the palm of your hand. there's a new iphone and ipad app called safer bus and it allows passengers to check their bus companies records before they book a ticket. now the launch of the app is in response to a series of deadly accidents involving tour buses. users can see the data the department of transportation collected on private bus lines, school buses, and tour bus operators. the app tells you if the dot is

monitoring the company, if there's a history of fatigued drivers and which companies are not allowed to legally operate. little rock national airport may soon bare the name of arguably arkansas' most famous couple. if approved, the facility will become known as the bill and hillary clinton national airport. the airport commission unanimously approved the name change. now the faa has to give the final nod. former president clinton issued a statement and he is humbled and looks forward to many happy landings at the airport in the years ahead. a daily dose of aspirin is known to help battle heart disease, but now several new studies suggest it might fight another common killer as well. that's our health alert. >> plus, surging gas prices are peeking interest in car sharing as an alternative to filling up your tank. i'm kristin fisher outside woodson high school in fairfax where two days ago, a 16-year- old student was assaulted on

investigators now have a big clue as they search for the man that attacked a 16-year-old girl as she was walking home from high school. >> it happened monday afternoon near the entrance to the path on picket road. police released surveillance photos of a possible suspect. kristin fisher joins us with the latest on this.

kristin. >> reporter: this assault took place close to two fairfax county public schools. one, woodson high school, which if you go to your left, is on the other side of these buses. and every day, hundreds of students, even employees are using this path to get to and from these schools. >> my heart was in my throat because i had walked this this morning at 5:00. >> reporter: this public school employee walks this path almost every day. >> i don't like walking in here myself, even broad daylight. >> reporter: she wants to remain unanimous, but she is speaking out. >> i hear this blood curling scream. i mean scream like horror. >> the screams were coming from a 16-year-old woodson high school student. fairfax county police say she had just entered this path when a man approached her from behind, grabbed her neck, and assaulted her. >> to hear her scream like she did, you knew she was

horrified. >> reporter: that employee and several lacrosse players got there just in time for the man to run away. 20 to 40 years old around 5'8", 170-pounds. he got away. >> this is a shortcut for the kids. this is their way home. >> reporter: two days after the asol, the path is still heavily trafficked by students. >> you are talking hundreds of kids that go through here every day. >> reporter: the path is popular, because it connects the schools to the neighborhood. any other route would add a mile. today the school's vice principal is standing guard, but many parents and employees are calling for a more permanent solution. >> one thing is a light, maybe widen this up. if this was a lot wider and clearer, i think the kids would feel safer. >> reporter: now this path is not on school property, which makes it difficult for fairfax county public schools to make any significant improvements.

december. she was in the front passenger seat video taping from inside the car when it wrecked. killing two of her friends and leaving her hospitalized. had agreed to be here as a guest on the show and do a live web chat afterwards. her story caused a lot of emotional upheaval for one of the families involved in that crash. so she has asked us not to reair her story. when she originally approached us with the video, desaleen hoped that dramatic tape would save lives and prevent others from going through the heart ache. desaleen, based on the calls, tweets, and facebook posts, we want to ensure you that you have made a difference in people's lives. here are some of the messages we received over the last 18 hours. very powerful. i intend on showing my teenage kids to help educate them. thank you writes alana. desaleen, thank you for having the courage to want to show

caught on tape, an suv slams into a gas pump and burst into flames. surveillance video at a miami gas station shows a yellow hummer waiting for a gas pump. suddenly an suv pulls in right in front of the hummer, slams to the pump and of course, it's a fiery encounter. the station attendant hit the button to stop the pump. nobody else was hurt. the driver is not expected to be charged. after about an hour of cutting and clearing the tree, the damage to the tree was revealed. police didn't know there was someone in the vehicle until they saw someone climbing out. now we get an example of why texting and walking around

100 cherry blossom trees will be planted at reagan national airport. it's a gift from the main international airport that serves tokyo in honor of the 100th anniversary of japan's first cherry blossom gift. the metropolitan washington airport authority plans to use some special light in the terminals to show things in a cherry blossom pink. >> i love that. the blossoms obviously a big tourist draw, but a huge source of pollen. our usually warm weather through the winter means a longer spring allergy season than usual. if you want to weather that storm, here's advice from the atlanta allergy and asthma clinic. replace the filters on your air conditioner. keep your nose and throat as clear as possible. you can use a neti pot or saline spray. stay in tune with your body for signs of respiratory distress. that could be allergy induced asthma. and even though it is nice out there, if you have allergies,

stay inside to exercise if you can. now, if you go to the doctor with a sinus infection, chances are, you're going to be given an antibiotic to make the congestion and pain go away. but new guidelines says most of these infections should not be treated this way. those guidelines say viruses cause 90 to 98% of sinus cases and do not respond to antibiotics. still, there are a leading reason these drugs are prescribed and it's leading to drug resistant strains of bacteria. >> the types of antibiotics, the range is narrow. the antibiotics that used to be honored just aren't really effective anymore. >> and it's a little scary. the new guidelines suggest doctors wait longer to prescribe antibiotics. if there's fever and facial pain. also tonight, more benefits associated with what some already describe as an

inexpensive wonder drug. talking about aspirin. several new studies show a daily dose of aspirin over several years can cut the chances of cancer. >> many people already take low dose aspirin if they have existing heart disease. to lower the danger of a future heart attack or stroke. this new review found added benefits. people who take aspirin daily have a 15% lower risk of dying from cancer. and that reduction goes up to 37% after five years of aspirin use. other studies showed aspirin seemed to cut down on the occurrence of first time tumors and slow down the spread if the person already has the disease. >> aspirin seems to be reducing your cancer incidents and cancer mortality. especially after long-term use. >> the doctor of the national institutes of health says aspirin something people with a family history of cancer should now consider. as people already do who are at high risk for cardiovascular

him on their team. >> reporter: thanks, guys. lots of news to get to. joining me in studio. joining me via satellite is brett with kwtx. brett, you attended today's workout on baylor's campus. can you take us through exactly what rg3 did today? how much throwing did we see? what did he look like? >> it was another day at the office for robert griffin iii. that guy has been phenomenal. today they charted him 78 of 84 for pass completions. they said of those six incompletes, four were drop passes. he was only really responsible for two of them and i know one that i saw was over thrown, but it was a 50, 60-yard pass. the guy felt comfortable out there. he was very business like, but i do know that everyone was very impressed today. >> familiar territory for him,

and grant, rg3 impressed at the combine. we saw how fast he was, but he didn't bother to throw. with the redskins set to draft him, why did he participate in today's proday? >> part of the process. he didn't shy away from anything. he wants to do everything and do it well. he was able to help teammates who helped win a trophy. he is going to go top two regardless of what he did today, but he put on a show. he is a showman who had a blast. do you saw the footage. he is laughing. he is giving his buddies hand pounds. he showed off the accuracy, the mobility that makes him an elite prospect. he had some fun with buddies. he doesn't have days left, so he wanted to enjoy it. >> brett, you told me the redskins have some contingency. did you get a chance to talk to mike shanahan? did he address the public? >> we did not. we counted seven or eight guys from the redskins organization. we approached mr. schneider and both of them declined
