mike hydeck. monika will have traffic in a moment and howard kicks things off with your weather first. another foggy morning. the marine layer, the air coming off the atlantic and chesapeake. so fog has stormed once again. -- has formed once again. it's thicker in the south than north and west of town of the here's a look at your day planner. expect the low clouds and fog for several hours this morning. by midday we'll probably start seeing some sunshine and then this afternoon more sun than yesterday so temperatures will be in the mid and upper 70s. might even touch 80 south and west of town toward culpeper. maybe sneaking up toward manassas, parts of fauquier county with a little bit of luck. right now the fog issue with that dense fog advisory for just about all of us till 10:00 a.m. out toward the northern shenandoah valley you're not under the advisory but everybody else is. visibilities have been way down, near zero in a few spots. naval academy up from zero to a

quarter mile. leonardtown over to cambridge, out to our west, warrenton, south toward culpeper also seeing low fog moving up to the north. right now half mile in gatersburg. it's -- gaithersburg. it's now 5:00 a.m. is it causing any problems with your morning commute? here's monika to answer that question. not really. i think everyone is taking it nice and slow this morning. you need to do that when you have this situation to the south and east of town. we're going to actually look at 95 on the northbound side where volume is just beginning to pick up as you can see here in woodbridge. but there are no problems as you head up into spring field. we'll take a live look further north now on 395 here at the 14th street bridge. you can see that volumes are still very light this thursday morning heading into the district. if you're planning to head over to the other side of town, let's take a look on our maps no problems from 66 coming from manassas to centreville and fairfax. we'll take a live look at 123 on the inbound side of i-66. foggy as well but no reports to report along 495. in my next report, we'll take a

look at 270. >> thank you, monika. people around the country are now demanding the arrest of a florida neighborhood watch captain who shot and killed a teenager. the family of trayvon martin joined supporters at a march in new york city. >> we're learning george zimmerman, the shooter has ties to northern virginia. delia goncalves is at freedom plaza with more. >> reporter: good morning. george zimmerman in fact did grow up in this area, in the manassas area. as far as freedom plaza, we are here live this morning because we want to let folks know about a rally that will be held here saturday at 2:00 p.m. it is just the latest in a series of movements across the country supporting this family of course. the rallies were held in new york and miami recently and support of trayvon sup martin's family -- trayvon martin's family. the teenager was shot and killed by george zimmerman who claims he acted in self-

defense. the teenager was returning from the store, had a haddie on and -- hoody on and was only carrying a bag of skittls and ice tea. zimmerman was told by police not to follow the boy but eventually shot him fatally. the teen can be heard over a 911 call screaming for help before the final gunshot. police did not arrest zimmerman because of a florida stand your ground law that allows a lawful gun owner to shoot and kill if he feels threatened. >> the death of trayvon is terrible. i heard today the commission taking the vote of no confidence in the chief. i have stated i'm looking for an understanding and investigation into not only the death of trayvon but the actions of the police department. i want to know if they did something they shouldn't have done. i want to know that. if they didn't do things they should have done, i want to know that i'm looking for an independent police investigation, a law

enforcement agency to come in and evaluate the actions of the sanford police department. >> we're asking as citizens of this country for petitioning our elected officials concerning the permitting of the gun that we believe was used to murder this young man. we want the commission to revoke his license. >> reporter: as i mentioned zimmerman grew up in manassas, virginia. he moved to florida about a decade ago after high school. hear from his neighbors coming up in my next live report in a half-hour. i'll see you then. >> delia goncalves reporting live from freedom plaza. d.c. police are looking for two people, a man and woman after the stabbing of three young women. investigators say last night's attacks stem from a fight that began at a mcdonald's in northeast. the stabbing happened in the 400 block of rhode island avenue. the victims wound up on franklin street where they flagged down an officer for help. one of the victims is a juvenile and was taken to children's hospital. all are expected to recover. a former mt. rainier police

officer has been sentenced to ten years in prison. prosecutors say last july gene gillette lured a 20-year-old man to his house by offering to put him in a porn movie. but when the man tried to flee from gillette's sexual advances, gillette shot him. gillette apologized to the victim yesterday in court and asked for forgiveness. he'll have to register as a sex offender. a nigerian woman is under arrest following a record heroin bust at dulles airport. 52-year-old bola adebisi ingested 180 pellets of heroin. she told customs officers she was here to visit her brother but couldn't describe him. she was turned over to homeland security agents. the seized heroin has a street value of about $150,000. it is 5:05. i'm watching your money. wall street looking for some direction today after a mixed showing. so far this morning two asian

stocks are down but it has been a pretty good month and year for stock. so far for march the dow is still up 1.3% and up #.7 -- or rather 7.4% for the year so far. checking the numbers the dow stands at 13,124 after dropping 45 points in trading yesterday. the nasdaq was up by about a point and the s&p 500 was down by about two and a half. online game makers zinga is buying out the creator of the popular mobile game called draw something. they did not release the financial terms of the deal. draw something is a word game where players draw pictures and guess what other people have drawn. the game only launched six weeks ago and has already been downloaded 35 million times. an explosion of interest in home beer brewing is forcing law makers across the country to review some long forgotten alcohol laws. although the old rules have

crct -- contract negotiations fell apart. the last contract expired a year ago. city officials say other officers will be brought in. president obama arrived in oklahoma city overnight. he had stops there and in ohio before returning to the white house. the president visited nevada and new mexico yesterday. he's on this trip to promote the administration's energy policies. the first part of the metro line to dulles is scheduled to be completed next year, but now the silver line may be much shorter than first planned. that story is coming up at 5:33. at 5:22, robert griffin iii dazzles the redskins in his pro day workout. next at 5:15, howard has rain chances and cooler temperatures in the seven-day forecast.

good morning. welcome back to 9news now. 5:14. there's another layer of fog covering the city and the areas surrounding. >> whether we drove in this morning, it wasn't bad. you could see a couple of stars now. visibilities now are down a half mile. >> the key bridge and normally when it's fog, it's just covered with fog. it's really cool. nothing this morning. >> earlier. but look at the cameras in a moment. the fog is moving in and it's going to be a slow morning because of that. here's a look at the dense fog advisory in effect till 10:00 this morning for just about everybody ec september in parts

of the shenandoah -- except in parts of the shenandoah valley. east of there the fog is thick and getting thicker. in fact, this morning, we've got visibilities especially south of town a quarter mile or less in many, many areas. at the naval academy, they're actually increased their visibilities from zero to a half mile. we're down to a half mile in gaithersburg, a mile at dulles. the fog bank has been growing toward the north. so a quarter mile in warrenton headed up toward marshal and the plains. loudoun county not bad at the moment but headed your way, too. baltimore down to one eighth of a mile right now. southern maryland you're socked in. northern neck, fredericksburg, the fog is here and will be here for several more hours. our bus stop forecast, low clouds, fog this morning. slight, slight chance you'll see a shower in one or two spots. low 50s to low 60s with sunrise at 8 after 7:00. sunshine by the middle of the

day. temperatures approaching 70 if we can poke into that sunshine. this afternoon mid- to upper 70s. might get to 80 in places like culpeper before the day is out. this morning in the mid-50s in leesburg 55. sterling 58. it's 60 in springfield. 60 in bethesda. bwi with the dense fog, 57. 57 also at andrews. looking outside on our michael & son weather camera, we're seeing the capitol get dimmer and dimmer. temperature 61 at reagan national with cloudy skies and fog. south, southeast winds at 5 miles an hour. only a 2 degree spread between the dew point and the temperature so our humidity now 94%. temperatures tell the story here with the cold coming down from the west and the warmth coming up in the east toward chicago still 63. storm system spinning right there. temperatures really show where the storm is now. you see it spinning on the radar. heavy rains in louisiana yesterday. some folks had a foot or so with flooding n. is now in mississippi. this storm system will march toward the east slowly just in

time for the weekend. while we've had some nice weather for the most part in spiept of the morning fog, -- spite of the morning fog, looks like our shower chances will be going up saturday and sunday. till then the late night clouds, early morning fog and just a stray shower is all i think we're going to be seeing today and tomorrow. so looking at the forecast today, 77. we get to the sun early enough. tonight near 60 for the low. tomorrow low 80s with midday and afternoon sunshine. then by saturday, here comes the showers and thunderstorms. only around 70. sunday looks even a little cooler, in the low 60s before clearing out early next week. and tuesday could be on the cool side at 60 but believe it or not, that's really close to where we should be for this time of year. 5:17. monika santami in with time saver traffic. >> we're beginning to see the fog really come down in the cameras and if you're planning to head over on to the east or south side of town, that's where you want to be most careful. let's take a look at the beltway all around town things are fine on the north side of town you're also doing okay

against the cubs. also former reds skins defensive coordinator gregg williams has been suspended by the n.f.l. indefinitely for his role in the saints bounty scheme. that's a quick look at sports this morning. have a great thursday. it wasn't just gregg williams. the former redskins coach who now works for the rams. the n.f.l. handed down its biggest punishment ever. saints head coach sean payton has been suspended for the year without pay. the n.f.l. determined payton and some other saints officials didn't stop the bounty system despite being warned and then he lied about whether it was still in place. >> we were misled and there were denials throughout that period and meanwhile there continued to be risks to our players and to the integrity of our game. >> they'll also lose draft picks and have been fined half a million dollars. one former redskin claimed publicly a bounty system was under gregg williams of the redskins but the redskins have

they do have some little statements for mariners right now. visibilities on the water near zero as well. some places like the naval academy have reported visibility near zero at times. going to be a slow go through the fog. here's a look at your day planner. we have the fog early, low clouds. yesterday it took a long time for that stuff to burn off. i think this afternoon we see some sunshine so we'll see temperatures respond. we did get to 70 yesterday. but today mid- to upper 70s. this fog burns off early enough south and west of town we may even make a run toward 80 toward culpeper. we're looking at a dense fog advisory till 10:00 for most areas. i-81 straussburg, luray, points west, they're not under the advisory but look at these visibilities. quarter mile at dulles. eighth of a mile at baltimore. quarter mile westminster and south and east, everybody really quarter mile or less. so very dense fog with temperatures this morning running in the 50s to low 60s

campaign stops in louisiana while holding his primary this saturday. however, romney did pick up a key endorsement from former florida governor jeb bush. >> a crowd mass in manhattan to show their support for the parents of trayvon martin. the teenager was shot and killed last month but police have not charged the shooter, a neighborhood watch captain who says he fired in self-defense. that man george zimmerman once lived in northern virginia. 9news now reporter delia goncalves joins us live with more. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. we spoke to a former neighbor of george zimmerman who lives in manassas. he says that after hearing the 911 call, it sounded to him ha zimmerman was paranoid. we're told that zimmerman and his family moved to the manassas area when he wasth. he's a 2001 -- was little. he's a 2001 graduate of osborne. he wrote in his yearbook he was moving to florida to live with

his uncle. his uncle has come to his defense. he says zimmerman is a spanish speaking minority with black friends and family members but some reports indicate zimmerman was heard uttering a racial slur under his breath when he was on the phone with police just moments before the shooting. still, his former neighbors here in our area say they were surprised to hear the once mild mannered boy is now at the center of this controversy. >> the children were all very obedient. they didn't run loose in the neighborhood. they were just very nice family. always yes ma'am and no ma'am. >> i feel for the guy but i feel a lot more for the family that's lost a child. >> we just showed some video and talked about a rally that was held in new york. there is a rally being held here at freedom plaza saturday at 2:00. we're going to have much more detail on that and the many moraleys in support -- more

rallies in support of the shooting victim in this case trayvon martin. we'll have that side of the story coming up at 6:00. >> it's not just here but outside the country people are talking about this story as well. a veteran fairfax county teacher accused of racial insensitivity is now on administrative leave. george marshal high schoolteacher marilyn bart is accused of asking one of her students to read a poem in black style. she singled out the 14-year-old in the past because of his race. fairfax county schools office of equity and compliance is investigating. bart already filed papers to retire at the end of the year. loudoun county says it needs more time to decide if it will help pay for phase two of the dulles metrorail project. the metropolitan washington airport's authority granted an extension request from county leaders. the county board of supervisors says it wants the extra 30 days because the board has seven new members. phase two would run from reston to dulles airport and then two

stops in loudoun county. those final two stops would be scrapped if the county decides to pull out. it is 5:34. i'm watching your money and your work history. the job market is looking brighter. report after report bears that out but it doesn't mean it's walk in the park out there. a lot of people are still unemployed or underemployed. the research tracks unemployment. it combines the percentage of workers who are out of work plus workers who have part-time jobs but want full-time positions. that percentage stands at 18.6% in mid march, a small improvement from 19.1% as of march 2011. but there is some good news here. if you find yourself among that big pool of underemployed workers, your status probably won't hurt you when you're interviewing for a new position. our partners at career build report from a new survey that 85% of employers understand employment gaps after the

recession. 94% said they wouldn't think less of a candidate who took a position during the recession that was at the lower level than the one he or she previously held. these factors could help you. 79% said it was a good thing if you took a temporary or contract assignment. 61% viewed taking classes favorable and 60% said volunteering was a plus. one of the most important things you can do in general, follow through after an interview. believe it or not, two-thirds of workers say they don't follow up with the employer after submitting the resume for consideration. important to take that extra step, letting the employer know you're interested and send a thank you note after an interview. two-thirds don't call. >> you were talking about taking a class. i believe people learning how to work out these new computers has got to be a big advantage if you show you can do that. absolutely. there are plenty of options with community colleges all over the place, training schools as well as standard colleges and universities. >> you've told us before if you

from you on facebook. >> thanks, jess. we've done a lot of stories on the national cathedral but it was not the only church damaged by the earthquake last august. the national city christian church sustained most of its damage in the sanctuary. last night church organize begannist charles miller performed a 90-minute concert to raise funds for repairs. some of the fallen chunks from the ceiling hit the church's organ. >> we lost about 500 organ pipes. for us to repair this damage to the ceiling and to the organ is going to cost us about $150,000. >> if you recognize the music, miller performed 90 minutes of music of back. it would have been the 307th birthday of bach. an author who lived through a violent relationship offers advice on escaping the abuse.

toward fredricksburg, stafford, quantico, you've been dealing with the fog for several hours. it's just getting up toward us and it is really thick outside. here's a look at the dense fog advisory. that is in effect till 10:00 a.m. for everybody basically in the washington and baltimore metro, southern maryland, the eastern shore, much of northern virginia. but when you get out west toward i-81, that's where we start to see visibilities not as bad. no advisory for those folks. look at the visibilities down to an eighth of a mile at national. 16th up in baltimore. so some dense fog. some areas near zero. many reporting a quarter mile or less from dulles south of fredericksburg. zero over at orange. quarter mile across most of southern maryland and the eastern shore. i know queen ann county will be 20 minutes late. here's the bus stop forecast. we're looking at the low clouds, the fog. temperatures low 50s to low 60s which is still way above average.

kind of an idea of what you tell people, what advice you give if they want to get out of this situation? we're going to put up some full screen abouts your workshop. >> my workshop is very detailed where i take people on different abuses and just because you don't have a scar doesn't mean you're not abused. i also give them a plan of escape. >> especially if something is really bad, if the situation gets terrible, what's the first thing someone should do? >> you should get out. call 911. there are others around you that should also be helping you. >> what about the things that you should take with you, the documents? >> that's right. there's a lot of documents that you need like your children's medical cards, your birth certificates, your important documents like banking and mortgage stuff. but at the same time you need evidence. you need evidence to prove that you have gone through. that cook pictures, your journals, your torn bloodied clothing. >> when you say pictures,
