with drizzle. at national. by noon we could be towards 70 if we can start to get some of that sunshine. we'll see it this afternoon, mid and even upper 70s within reach. there's the dense fog advisory. just about everybody tell you get to the northern shenandoah valley in the west and the mountains with visibilities this morning way down. we're looking at visibilities down to a mile in leesburg. that's dropping. quarter mile westminster. an eighth of a mile dulles and national. 16 at baltimore. look at all the .25s, even zero at orange. low beams. a slow go this morning with the fog and also with the volume now building and a couple of incidents. with more on that we go to monika santami with time saver traffic. definitely you want to be careful outside right now as the volumes increase. you've got the fog to deal w. keep your speed limits down and your fog lights on as well. i'll start off with the beltway. overall things aren't too bad on the beltway but there is an accident in virginia on the georgetown pike just before the beltway. lanes are blocked on the georgetown pike as they wait for the tow truck to arrive. in the meantime maybe you want to use the dulles toll road instead. that was a single vehicle into

a ditch so it may take a few minutes for them to deal with that situation. we'll take you over to the american legion bridge first. on the west side of town which is still looking pretty good. no problems to report between bethesda and tysons corner here. we'll go back over to the maps. this is where things start to get a little bit sticky. on the northbound side of 95 it's beginning to slow down quite a bit from dale city into woodbridge because of the fog. we'll take a live look first in this area where again on the northbound side of 95, it's a bit slow. then 395 at the 14th street bridge. you can see fog is definitely going to be a factor this morning. coming up in my next report, i'll update you on the situation on the georgetown pike at 6:15. back to you. >> thank you, monika. city leaders in sanford, florida are giving their police chief a vote of no confidence for his handling of the trayvon martin shooting. >> martin was the 17-yard boy shot and killed by -- 17-year- old boy shot and killed by a neighborhood watch captain. the watch captain was not charged under a self-defense law. >> the case is gaining national attention.

delia goncalves is live at the freedom plaza this morning. it will be the site that will host a rally this weekend. >> reporter: that's right. the rally will be held saturday at 2:00. folks who attend the rally are told to wear black or their hoodies. it was raining and trayvon martin, the 17-year-old who was killed was wearing a hoody at the time that fateful day where he was shot and killed near a neighbor's home. rallies were held in miami and new york in support of the teen's family. the unarmed teenager was walking home from the store carrying a bag of skittls and a bottle of ice tea. he was on the phone with his girlfriend and told her he was being followed. george zimmerman reported a suspicious man in the area. he reportedly called police nearly 50 times. however, this time when the cops told him to back down, he continued to pursue the victim. he later told police the unarmed 17 yearldz a-- 17-year-

old attacked him. >> the death of trayvon is terrible. i heard today the commission taking the vote of no confidence in chief lee. i have stated that i'm looking for an understanding, an investigation into not only the death of trayvon but the actions of the sanford police department. i want to know if they did something they shouldn't have done, i want to know that. if they didn't do things they should have done, i want to know that i'm looking for an independent investigation, a law enforcement agency to come in and evaluate the actions of the sanford police department. >> we're asking as citizens of this country we are pa physicianing our -- petitioning our elected officials concerning the permitting of the gun that we believe was used to murder this young manual, we want the -- man, we want the commission to revoke his license. >> coming up in my next live report at 6:30, hear from george zimmerman's former neighbors in manassas, virginia. back to you. >> thank you, deal, delia goncalves live at freedom plaza this morning.

d.c. police are investigating the stabbing of a pregnant woman. she was stabbed in the stomach early this morning on 9th street near southeast avenue in -- southern avenue rather in southeast. the woman was eight months pregnant. she should be okay. we do not know the condition of her unborn baby. police are now on the lookout for the man who attacked her. new this morning at least one arrest in a triple stabbing. police tell 9news now they arrested a teenage girl overnight. another suspect may be out there. three women were stabbed last night at rhode island avenue and 4th street northeast. at least one of the victims is a minor and at least one is in serious condition. new at 6:00 a.m., another possible location for a casino in prince george's county. developers in county native charles hopkins is pitching a sight in largo. he hopes to put 4700 slot machines and 117 table games there. the site is at the boulevard at the capital center. that shopping center has struggled in this bad economy.

hopkins' plan includes a spa, nightclub and sports venue. county executive rushern baker wants to put a casino at national harbor instead. any table gaming facility needs approval from state lawmakers and then from voters. vincent gray says sweeping campaign finance reform may be needed in the district. he wants lawmakers to consider major changes to how candidates get their money. several city councilors are facing subpoenas as part of the thompson investigation. the standoff between french police and a man wanted for killing three schoolchildren is entering its second day. police say the suspect wants to, quote, die with weapons in his hands. police have not had contact with the suspect since last night. right now you're looking at live images from toulouse, france. the man is accused of killing three jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three paratroopers. the man says he's affiliated

with al qaeda. french authorities are willing to wait him out. house street smart are you when -- how street smart are you when it comes to crossing a busy intersection? sounds pretty easy, right? but every year people are struck and killed by not following the rules. police have launched a new program to remind pedestrians how to safely cross the street. >> there's a high volume of pedestrian traffic that aren't -- [indiscernible] -- such as crossing in crosswalks or they're crossing into traffic. >> or they're crossing holding a cell phone not hearing. prince george's county authorities will announce how and when they'll begin citing pedestrians for improperly crossing the street. fines will range from $75 to $500. it is 6:06. i am watching your money. i talk about scams a lot, give you warnings on how to avoid them. this morning a number of

buzzwords you'll want to consider. red flags for scams. these are words that con art is use a lot -- artists use a lot online. we're going to start with congratulations. unless you just had a baby or some other similar life change, beware. you should disregard all of those messages promising that you won a free ipad or you were the 100 millionth visitor to a site. here's another buzzword you'll wand to avoid. acai. these berries are marketed as an all natural miracle drug. the fcc started cracking down on wild claims back in 2010 but they are still circulating online. another buzzword, look out for the word "home" if used in connection with work from home. there are legit work from home opportunities out there but there are also lots and lots of scams. another red flag, the words "risk free." life question here for you. is there anything in life that's risk free?

disregard these ones. here's a sign of a mobile phone scam. look for the word "service" along with "bill" and "charge." another sign of a scam, unsolicited e-mail about a diet. schemes promising ways to get thin quick can be just as numerous as getting rich quick. finally, beware of e-mails talking about stocks. if you get an unexpected e-mail promising a can't miss investment opportunity, it is best to use extreme caution. of course we get a lot of these every single day in our e-mail. >> i get a lot that say thank you for inquiring about working from home opportunities. just delete, delete, delete. don't even bother to open. angry bird addicts, do is the day you've been waiting for. the new game comes out. >> the latest version of the game is getting a premier similar to a hollywood movie. >> it's called "angry birds space." the game was unveiled by nasa earlier this month with the video from the international space station. there's a national geographic

we are back at 6:12. here's some of the stories making news now. no reaction yet from the state department on the nation in northwest africa. soldiers overthrough the democratically elected president saying he mishandled an insurgent movement. he's in hiding. afghanistan will be in the spotlight on capitol hill. the senate armed services committee will hear from general john allen, the head of international forces and he'll talk about the military mission in light of this month's shooting of civilians by an american soldier. at least one person is dead will r in the latest surround of severe weather down south. strong winds also damaged homes and trees in the area.

>> very serious weather situation. >> a big storm in the middle of the country gave the flooding and severe weather in louisiana, mississippi and arkansas. chicago yesterday got 2087 degrees. s that -- got to 87 degrees. in the seven ever the last eight days they're in the 80s. >> that's chicago for you. >> they're making a run toward their april record of 80. incredible warmth. for us we're off to another foggy start. our dense fog advisory once again has been posted by the national weather service. it is in effect till 10:00. a live picture coming from freedom plaza this morning of some of the visibilities downtown which are running a quarter to half mile. as we look at the dense fog advisory, you'll see just about everybody in it except when you go far west of washington. some of the advice i can'ts are now down -- visibilities are now down to an eighth of a mile at dulles. 16th in baltimore. look south. everybody about a quarter to maybe half a mile. so there's a lot of fog out there.

it will be around for a few more hours. at the bus stop, clouds, a little drizzle. we will burn off this fog and cloud cover earlier than yesterday. even through late this morning we'll be mostly cloudy. low 70s by 1:00. i think we get into some sunshine earlier this afternoon. that will boost temps into the mid if not upper 70s before this day is out. so that's looking pretty good. right now we've got upper 50s in restton. sterling is 59. 60 already at rockville and bethesda. columbia, crofton at 57 along with andrews. as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera, the capitol dome was there earlier. now the fog has shrouded it completely. south wind at 5 and humidity 94%. that storm system in the middle of the country, chicago still 61 at this hour. that's incredible for this time of year. also the 30s in the mountains. there's been snow flying out west. this storm system by the way, this is bringing a lot of rain in mississippi this morning. it's going to bring a lot of

there are many areas even worse than that. we have a lot of fog out there. a dense fog advisory in effect till 10:00 a.m. let's start with the day planner because temperatures are actually kind of comfortable. upper 50s, low 60s out there right now. we're going to stay in the low 60s through 9:00. maybe pockets of drizzle as well. by noon sun starts to develop, 70. this afternoon partly sunny at least, mid, upper 70s out there. so a very comfortable archway above the seasonal averages which are at 58. there's the dense fog advisory covering the entire metro region. as you head toward winchester, hagerstown, you're not in the advisory. you may see a little fog this morning. closer in, this is where the visibilities are really down. southern maryland socked in. baltimore down to a 16th. an eighth at dulles. we're going into the 70s once we get rid of the clouds and fog. let's go inside to monika tracking the commute this morning. volume, incidents, fog, not a good start for this thursday. it's been a tough combination. you're absolutely right. here's a live look at 66 on the

westbound side. very heavy and slow. westbound this morning heading for the fairfax county parkway because of a disabled bus in the service roadway and crews are on the scene trying to fix that situation. on the inbound side your lanes are open but you have got that slow traffic out of manassas off and on to centreville and fairfax. let's go over to our maps. the beltway is final. we're zooming to the westbound side of the southeast southwest freeway right before the 3rd street tunnel whether there was debris in the road. it's causing flat tires. they're trying to clean that up as soon as possible. you can see it's slowing down on the westbound side of the freeway. inbound side of 395, also heavy across the 14th street bridge with the fog situation. let's go outside live right now. if you're planning to head over to the northbound side of 395, this is exactly what i was talking about. fog and volume of course at this time of the morning. a quick live look at the other side of town as well. if you're planning to head over on the northbound side of i-95 heavy and steady into springfield. coming up in my next report, we'll update you on area roads

growing controversy. zimmerman we're told moved to manassas with his family when he was just a young boy. he graduated osborne high school in 2001 before moving with his family to florida. but one neighbor we spoke to says he returned recently to ask a former pastor to write a recommendation for him so he could become a police officer. zimmerman never became a police officer. >> when i heard the tapes of his calling into the police department, i said that sounds like paranoia to me. he's a big boy. he could have taken that kid easy. >> without a gun. >> without a gun. >> it was like he was trying to prove something, that he could handle this himself. he didn't need help. >> reporter: there will be a rally to support the shooting victim in this case, 17-year- old trayvon martin here at freedom plaza in d.c. downtown across from the wilson building on pennsylvania avenue from

recital last night to help raise money for repairs. the earthquake in august damaged the church's sanity wear and the pipe organ -- sanctuary and the pipe organ. it's expected to cost around $150,000. i am watching your money. more and more of us are paying $4 a gallon for gas these days. according to aaa fuel gauge report, gas prices in the d.c. metro area now average $3.96 per regular grade. that's up 30 cents in just the last month. that's creating a real pinch on family budgets. the average round trip commute nationwide is now 48 miles a day. over a month that means the average commuter puts 960 miles on the car with the average home having two workers, that means 1900 miles a month. every time gas prices go up 50 cents, that means another 80 bucks a month in the tank for the average family. from fueling your car to fueling yourself, starbucks is launching a new line of natural energy drinks.

welcome back to 9 news now. time saver traffic now on the northbound side of i-95 it's going to be that slow traffic and the fog this morning. coming out of dale city to woodbridge and 35 miles an hour coming up from lorton into springfield into the fog. now an accident as well. let's go to a live picture on the inner loop of the beltway just past the springfield interchange. the accident is there. crews are on the scene. it is causing slow traffic trying to get past that toward braddock road and then it breaks free up to 66. let's go back over to the maps. another issue has been on the westbound side of the southeast southwest freeway right here close to the 3rd street tunnel. it was asphalt that dropped on the road causing flat tires this morning and very slow traffic getting by. ddot has been on the scene for a while cleaning up there as well. we'll end with a live look at fog on the bw parkway north of the beltway.
