6:34 am
law is unconstitutional, that tomorrow somebody could come in and attack social security. >> on average, the increase in family premiums just to pay for the uncompensated health costs of the uninsured is more than $1,000. so in effect they're saying we're going to foist the bill on you. not on us. and that's why this really should be a matter of individual responsibility. >> the cost of uncompensated care is less than 2.5% of total health care spending and if you're really worried an't cost shifting look at if -- about cost shifting look at medicare and medicate which are far greater shifters of costst to the people with private insurance. >> reporter: today's session will have two arguments, one mt. morning and one in the afternoon. the first in the morning will focus of course on whether this law can survivor without the individual mandate. the second in the afternoon, well that argument will focus around a portion of the law which calls for expanding the medicaid program.
6:35 am
the challenging states, 26 of the states, say that it imposes an unfair burden on the budgets, mike back to you. >> delia goncalves live outside the supreme court so compelling this morning. thanks. keep it right here for continuing coverage of the important case. at the top of the hour "cbs this morning" is going to have analysis of yesterday's arguments and to show you what it means, check out the audio from inside the court by going to wusa9.com. follow us on twitter, our handle @wusa9. >> you want to do that. in e investigators are trying to piece together an apparent murder/suicide involving a former fairfax county police sergeant and his teenage daughter. we brought you this story as breaking news yesterday morning. the shooting happened at an suv parked at the girl's grandparents home on forest grove drive in annandale. the victims are identified as 40-year-old john jackson, and his 13-year-old alexis. investigators are trying to determine who pulled the
6:36 am
trigger and why. neighbors who heard the gunfire are in disbelief. >> it's sad. and i imagine the people that are putting -- going through this how sad it is. >> jackson was a former sergeant with the fairfax county police department. he left the department in june 2010 after serving 16 years. the push to bring a casino to prince george's county is cleared the first of three hurdles. the state senate allowed table games, the vote 35-11. now it goes on the ought house of delegates. if it's approved there then it would go before the voters in a statewide referendum in november and baker has proposed billing a $1 billion casino at national harbor. two more hurdles to clear before that's possible. d.c. mayor says there would be speed cameras and red light cameras on every street in the city. the major says the city brought in $80 million with the cameras last year and he wants to add
6:37 am
another $30 million in revenue across the region. that's ignited a debate. are the cameras for safety or for cash? >> you can say all you want to about this is about public safety. the fines are there because the district needed additional revenue. >> we've gotten a safer roadway from these cameras. clearly they do also generate revenue. >> yeah. the vast majority of tickets by d.c. traffic cameras go to drivers from maryland and virginia. so if you don't want to see that white flash in the rear- view mirror, the mayor's advice slowdown and you won't see it. jessica doyle is watching your money and your credit cards. >> she says earning the credit card rewards may not be worth it in some cases. >> that's right. you know they can be fantastic. you're getting something back for everyday spending but does it always make sense to reach for the credit card? now i've had friends who charge major items like college tuition for example just to get airline rewards but what about
6:38 am
charges what you owe on the taxes? does that make financial sense? according to the partners at "usa today" here's what you need to know. the irs does take plastic but paying by credit cards may not mean big rewards. in fact the cost of paying the taxes with a credit card usually exceeds the value of the rewards. the government doesn't absorb the convenience fees that service providers charge to process the transaction. for you that means paying an extra percentage of the payment in the service fees. they have only about 1% of the toe pal payment with the cash -- total payment with the cashback rewards. even airline rewards don't make up the extra coxes of the transaction fees. also -- costs of the transaction fees. also you're going to get stuck paying interest on that if you can't pay it off in full. if money is tight and you're tempted to charge taxes think
6:39 am
about the irs installment plan instead. it won't affect your credit score. you won't get the interest payments like you will with your credit card. that gives you another option. >> didn't think about the fees in that you would get that passed on to you and the government wouldn't absorb it. >> exactly. that's -- that's the -- that's the detail here. that gets in the mix. >> fine print. >> all in the detail. >> thanks jess. our time is 6:39. years after being shot in the face, a virginia man undergoes a face transplant. in nine minutes what doctors say that man can finally do once again. >> and howard has a lot of temperatures on the forecast. 400s, 50s, 60s. 70s. and that's just for today. get a look ahead out the weekend when -- at the weekend when 9news now returns. keep it here.
