>> hello, everybody. i'm bruce johnson. today rick santorum is insisting he'll remain in the presidential race, despite mounting pressure from party leaders who want to rally behind mitt romney and focus on defeating president obama. >> reporter: mitt romney took aim at president obama in suburban milwaukee on sunday. >> he doesn't know what's going on in this country. doesn't also understand what the future looks like. >> reporter: the former massachusetts governor says the president is too comfortable with trillion dollar deficits that could sink the u.s.

economy. but romney must first win his party nomination before taking on the president. he leads rival rick santorum in the polls and overall delegate count. santorum is vowing to stay in the race even if he loses tuesday's primary. >> less than half the delegates have been selected. we have a long way to go and we're going to fight the fight to make sure we can win. >> reporter: there is a growing call for santorum to end his campaign within the party. mitch mcconnell says the time has come to focus on the general election. >> i think it's absolutely apparent it's in the best interest of our party at this particularment point to get behind the person who is obviously going to be our nominee. >> reporter: vice-president joe biden is expecting romney to win the gop nomination. he says romney is out of touch with the voters. >> this is about the middle class. and none of what he's offering does anything. it's just returning to the old policies. >> reporter: a new poll shows

the president's job approval rating is over 50% for the first time since june, but many americans are still worried about rising gas prices. maryland and the district of columbia have primaries on tuesday. romney is favored in both places where party mod democrats tend to rule. not in virginia. demonstrators held a vigil for trayvon martin and sounded off on their opposition to the so- called stand your ground law. they spoke to our ken molestina tonight about why they believe the shooter, george zimmerman, the teen's killer, should be arrested. >> talk about this most unfortunate tragedy. >> reporter: the mayor led a group of demonstrators in old town's market square tonight. those in attendance wore hoodies and echoed the sentiments we've been hearing for weeks. they all want what they're calling just for trayvon. >> the outcries happening a lot, specifically because he's an african-american. >> reporter: while the u.s. justice department investigates what exactly happened the night

george zimmerman shot the teen, these demonstrators aren't holding back on their speculations. >> racial profiling, stereotyping is something that happens all over the country. >> reporter: at the center of tonight's rally were two specific demands, that zimmerman be arrested for shooting trayvon and that the so-called standard ground law in florida be reviewed. it was back in late february that martin was killed and now his politicians continue to come out of the woodwork to champion the justice for trayvon cause. many of the same elected leaders are being criticized for using it to further their own political gains. >> if you're going to use it to advance a political platform, shame on you. if members of the public take this and make it a determining factor on the sole basis, shame on them. >> reporter: while some have turned the controversy into an issue surrounding race, others say it has little to do with skin color and has to do with gun laws that allow people to shoot and kill without having to retreat. >> you can't have laws in place that encourage people to kill others without good reason. >> reporter: the stand your

ground legislation where the most debated points in this entire controversy is something that doesn't exist here in virginia. alexandria's mayor says he'll fight to keep it out of virginia. >> national leaders are still keeping the spotlight on sanford, florida, where they're calling on local authorities to arrest george zimmerman for the shooting of trayvon martin. thousands rallied in sanford yesterday. today some sports stars and entertainers turned out for a rally in miami. basketball stars, singers and others joined the parents of trayvon martin in calling for justice. george zimmerman is claiming the shooting was in self- defense. state and federal authorities are investigating. a group of young people responding to former president bill clinton's call for activism brought their know how and energy to a neighborhood in northeast d.c. today. armando trull was there.

>> reporter: mary quinn's daughter says her mother, who is nearly 80 and partly handicapped, had abandoned the lincoln heights home the family had lived in for generations. >> once something goes, you know, bad, and you don't have the funds, you know, it's a waste of time. you just go downhill, not up. >> reporter: but that home, along with many others in this northeast neighborhood, is getting a complete makeover. >> i felt that i was blessed. with all these people around here that are helping me, i'm truly blessed. >> reporter: mrs. queen is even more pleased she got to meet former president bill clinton. >> he gave me a kiss. >> did you did give him a kiss, too? >> no, i let him kiss me. >> reporter: scores of young volunteers from the clinton global initiative worked shoulder to shoulder with volunteers from rebuilding together. >> it's nice to be able to have an impact change on an individual and to really make her be able to stay in her home

and be safe and secure in her house. >> reporter: today's event capped a three-day global initiative conference. >> they need and deserve the work you're going to do today. >> reporter: northeast washington wasn't the only place where former president bill clinton was helping out those in need. he was also doing something for the men and women serving overseas. just a few blocks away at the kelly miller middle school, more clinton global initiative volunteers were working alongside with the uso and some nfl players putting together3,000 care packages which will be sent to american troops, many of whom are serving in harm's way. in lincoln heights, armando trull, 9 news now. >> mrs. queen will be able to move back into that refurbished home by the end of this month, we're told. police have arrested two men they say were involved in a shooting outside an early

voting place in northwest washington yesterday. turns out one of the men arrested is the very same man who suffered a gunshot wound and went into the takoma recreation center looking for assistance. authorities are still looking for a third suspect tonight. voting was halted for 20 minutes following the violence yesterday. it's been a violent weekend in prince george's county. one man has been shot and killed in chillham. two women were shot saturday night in suitland. one victim dies and a second woman hospitalized. no arrest in this case either. three people were shot and wounded friday night near prince george's county mall in hyattsville. police have no suspects at this time. this coming memorial day weekend will mark ten days that erica and her husband, benjamin, were convicted of killing a virginia couple on vacation in ocean city and dismembering their bodies. last week, erica filed her latest bid for a new trial.

she's now claiming her defense counsel back in 2003 failed to highlight her mental instability and the dominance of her husband at the time of the crimes. she was convicted of first degree murder in the death of joshua ford and second degree murder in the death of martha crutchly. she's serving life plus 38 years. benjamin is currently serving 38 years. they were tried separately. this evening, police in exington, kentucky -- lexington, kentucky are evaluating how to handle rowdy fans should there be a repeat of the incident that followed the wildcat win last night. fans overturned cars and lit couches on fire. 20 people were arrested in all of this. there were no serious injuries or serious property damage. >> i believe in having a good time, believe me. but not when it gets to the point of being crazy and dangerous. >> the state of kentucky is so connected to this program, it's

the commonwealth'steam. they go overboard sometimes. >> they call it a crime. any fire set, you potentially can face criminal charges. but in a crowd of people, remember, you can still get burned. >> police in lexington are reviewing video of the riot and plan to target the areas during the championship game tomorrow night. u.k. goes against kansas tomorrow night in the title game which can be seen right here on channel 9. game begins at 9:23. tonight, we're learning that a local coaching legend, whose story made it to the big screen, has passed away. coach paul hines, the assistant coach in the movie remember the titans, died yesterday at a rehab facility in riverdale, maryland. he was featured in the disney flick about the legendary 1971 high school football team. coach hines was 74 years old. a dramatic rescue of a 2- year-old boy trapped in a well, this weekend. it happened on the other side of the world. the boy had fallen into a 40 footdry well in a small village

in china. when firefighters arrived on the scene, they could hear him crying at the bottom. the diameter of the well was one foot. it brought air into the well bottom and tried to pull the little boy up with a rope, but his body was so small, he kept slipping out. eventually, they were successful. he was taken to a hospital for treatment. still ahead on 9 news now this sunday night, a rescue at sea. >> so far away from any land with winds you never experienced before. >> injured boaters on a yacht hundreds of miles from land. the fans decide who takes home some of the academy of country music awards. i'll tell you who took home the trophy. and we've got light rain moving through the area tonight. and overnight, but for your monday wakeup weather, what can you expect? we've got sunny skies to start off your monday as the rain

if you had a problem with your credit card today, you weren't alone. visa says a technical issue affecting its network barred people from using their credit and debit cards for about 45 minutes on sunday. the company had trouble processing some transactions as a result, but the system is operating normally now, we're told. a massive pileup this weekend on a kansas highway killed five people and sends at least 13 others to hospitals. a truck was pulling a trailer when it hit a guardrail and went down a ravine. police are still trying to count the number of vehicles involved in the accident. we've got a sad story out of boston tonight where an apartment fire leaves 16 people without a home, including one woman who lived in that building for 72 years. the fire started on the top floor of the three-story building. nobody was in that apartment, but an elderly couple below had no clue they were in danger. >> they had no idea there was

even a fire in the building. they said what building? i said this building. you've got to get out now. >> my dad went in there. i heard a big bang, so i started crying on the phone, because i wanted him to come out. so i just said that there was a fire. >> right from the get-go, there was a heavy fire. we were worried about the building burning and actually two of the rooms did catch fire. >> i'm a nervous wreck. i want to go in the house. i can't believe this happened. april fool is really an april fool's joke. >> tonight firefighters say it took only 15 minutes for the roof to collapse. no word on what caused that fire. what a rescue this weekend. hundreds of miles at sea. the coast guard is waiting for the weather to improve before launching a rescue of three sailors injured in a storm about 400 miles off the california coast. the spokeswoman for the world yacht race says the sailors 70 foot yacht was hit by a large wave on saturday, knocking out its steering. >> we are pretty soaked and we

outfit earlier today. >> you did? >> you don't listen to me half the time. that's what's going on. listen up on the forecast. we've got scattered showers right now. it's going to be pulling out of here very quickly. here's a look at your weather camera tonight where we have cloudy skies and light rain. temperature 58 outside right now. winds are calm but the winds will pick up tomorrow especially. here's a look at the doppler. you see the green? that is just a light rain going through. got some pockets of moderate rain where you see the areas of yellow. we'll zoom on in here. you can see in western maryland and cumberland, you have more rain going through. across interstate 81, winchester you may see a little bit. overall this is fairly light. gaithersburg, frederick, fairfax, you're seeing light rain tonight. this stuff will be coming to an end. you can see we're on the southern end of the system where it's actually brought down quite a bit of a stormy activity for parts of western virginia. also north of us into new york

and philly getting more moderate rainfall. so this pulls on out of here, making way for more sunshine on your monday. showers ending overnight, and monday morning commute looking just fine. sunny and breezy for your monday afternoon. and then warmer for tuesday and wednesday. so if you want the 70s, it's coming this way. the futurecast showing us a shower is coming to an end overnight. the clouds also moving out of here really quickly. by tomorrow, 6:00 a.m., pulling out. we're going to see lots of sunshine out there tomorrow, to start off your monday. may see areas of frost, especially northern virginia, northern maryland, but right now no frost advisories are posted right now. we're expecting kind of a breezy day tomorrow. cloudy and school overnight with showers ending. northwest winds at 10. tomorrow morning as you're going out for work, kids are going to the bus stop, grab a jacket. mostly sunny and cool. north winds 10-15. the winds will pick up by the afternoon, be quite gusty at

times, under mostly sunny conditions. you will want your sunglasses. highs 60 to 65. winds north 15 to 20 miles per hour with gusts higher than that. in cumberland, western maryland, upper 50s. lots of sun and breezy. winchester, martinsburg in the lower 60s. manassas and leesburg, 61 degrees. in downtown, we're looking at 63, a couple of degrees above the average. high of low 60s. annapolis mid-60s. keep in mind we do have a small craft advisory in effect for you tomorrow because it will be quite windy out there. monday, a cool start and then breezy by the afternoon. plenty of sun. highs 60 to 65 degrees. you want your jacket and your sunglasses. maybe even extra hair spray to deal with the winds tomorrow. our seven-day outlook. we're talking about the warming trend tuesday and wednesday. here it is. close to 70 on tuesday. we got clouds moving in tuesday to wednesday night.

maybe a shower. tuesday, lower 70s. then we cool down thursday and friday. back into the 60s. the weekend as we head into easter looking pretty good. mid-60s for saturday. upper 60s for sunday. on your easter sunday and looking dry. in fact, the next several days here looking fairly storm-free. i do want to mention, bruce, that we've got a couple of other models saying that this coming weekend for easter might even get some snow. but that is several days away, which in meteorology terms is light years away. they're disagreeing on that. we'll keep you posted if we see major changes in there. for now, easter looks really nice. get out all those pretty dresses. >> it can't snow on easter and cover up those outfits. >> we don't want it to. right now, but you never know. we thought we'll at least mention it. biggest stars and brightest stars in country music turned out tonight for the country music awards. garcia has all the action
