anything. >> reporter: cbs news, washington. members of the united nations security council will get an update this morning on peace efforts in syria. u.n. special envoy is scheduled to brief members of the security council on the status of a peace plan the syrian president accepted a week ago. it calls for an immediate cease- fire after more than a year of violence. during meetings in turkey this weekend, about 70 countries pledged millions of dollars to help opposition forces, including supplying communications equipment. the shooting death of a florida teen trayvon martin has spurred a movement now. teens, families, even some lawmakers are calling for the end of the stand your ground law. demonstrators in alexandria joined this cause this weekend. >> they talked about why they believe the shooter george zimmerman should be arrested. >> to talk about this most unfortunate tragedy... >> reporter: the alexander mayor led a group of

demonstrators in old town's market square. those in attendance wore hoodies and echoed the sentiments we've heard for weeks now. they're all calling for justice for trayvon. >> the outcries are happening a lot specifically because he's african-american. >> reporter: while the u.s. justice department investigates exactly what happened, these demonstrators aren't holding back on their speculations. >> racial profiling, stereotyping, something that happens all over the country. >> reporter: at the center of tonight's rally were two specific demands. that zimmerman be arrested for shooting trayvon and the so- called stand your ground law in florida be reviewed. it was back in late february martin was killed and now as politics continue to come out of the woodwork to champion for the justice for trayvon cause, many of the same elected leaders are being criticized to use the controversy to further their own political gains. >> if you're going to use this as a cause to advance a political platform, shame on you. if members of the public make this as a determining factor,

shame on them. >> reporter: others say it has little to do with skin color and much more to do with gun laws that allow people to shoot and kill without having to retreat. >> you can't have laws in place that encourage people to kill others without good reason. >> reporter: the stand your ground legislation where the most -- were the most debated points in this entire controversy is something that doesn't exist here in virginia. alexander's mayor says it's something he'll fight to keep out of virginia. police are searching for answers after a violent weekend in prince george's county. one man was shot and killed in chillum early saturday. two women were shot saturday night in suitland. one victim died. the second woman remains hospitalized. and three people were shot friday night near prince george's county mall in hyattsville. no arrests have been made in any of these cases. d.c. police are searching for a third suspect they say was involved in a shooting

outside an early voting location in northwest on saturday. so far two men have been arrested in the case. one of the men walked into the tacoma recreation center looking for medical assistance after the shooting. fairfax county police have arrested 19-year-old marco burke for allegedly making bomb threats against annandale high school. on friday police checked out the school using a bomb quad robot but never found the bomb. the threat itself kept the school closed for much of the morning and students were stuck sitting on buses for three hours. their parents not happy. >> annan dal high school -- annandale high school failed the parents, the students. they knew about this since 4:00 this morning. the kids should not even have gotten on the bus this morning. >> the school system has apologized for the delay when it comes to notifying the parents about the bomb threat. 5:43. here's a look at some other things making news now. the coast guard rescued the most severely injured sailors from a damaged yacht off the

california coast sunday. rescue crews had dropped medical equipment to the crew of the geraldton after a huge wave slammed the boat saturday. it was taking part in an around the world race when the accident happened. the last of the crew is still on the yacht slowly sailing to san tran. the colorado wildfire is 90% contained. all the evacuees from the lower north fork area can finally go back home. freezing rain headed to the area is expected to improve the conditions as well. the fire started as a controlled burn which is normally meant to prevent a forest fire. we may never know the identity of the maryland resident who won a portion of friday's $640 million megamillions jackpot. that's because in maryland lottery winners aren't required to reveal their identity. it's a good policy. but we do know the winning ticket was sold at 7:15 friday night at a 7-eleven store in

cleared the way for some tough new sanctions on iran. the obama administration believes cutting off iranian oil would not significantly harm the world markets. the final wall street numbers on friday look like this. the dow rose 66 points. the nasdaq dropped 4. s&p 500 picked up 5. if you had a problem with your credit card on sunday, you were not alone. visa says a technical issue affecting its network barred people from using their credit and debit cards for about 45 minutes on sunday. the company had trouble processing some transactions and as a result, the system is fixed now and it's operating normally. whole foods says it is going to stop selling over fished seafood. beginning april 22, the natural and organic some markets will no longer carry seafood caught from depleted waters through methods that will damage the environment either they say. the list includes octopus, gray sole and atlantic halibut. it will stock sustainable

>> you got to look at it with a ocean view. >> a river view. very pretty over there. the concern is if warming occurs and the sea levels rise, there will be a lot less after view because a lot of places will be under water over the next 70, 80 years. your children, your grandchildren, great grandchildren may not have the view. your louisiana may be gone. >> i know. we keep hearing about that one. >> here's your bus stop forecast this morning. the rain is gone. that is pulling away from us except for a couple spots south and west. here in the metro we're going to see clearing skies quickly with 46 to 56. i'll fix that typo when i wake up. day planner today, we've got 49 degrees at 8:00. by noon sunny, 55. in fact, sunshine pretty quickly returns. you'll notice the winds out of the north 10 to 20, gusting to 25. another breezy, spring day out there. 60 degrees by 4:00 with highs in the low 60s. but with the breeze out there it's clearly going to abday for

the jackets. at 8:00 we're back in the upper 50s. winds a lot lighter tonight. that means 30s in the suburbs and maybe some patchy frost as well. this morning the rain over the last couple of hours sinking south of us. between fredricksburg and harrisonburg and south of culpeper now pulling away from luray, this is the last of the showers there. you can see even south, may just clip fredricksburg a little bit more here but we're pretty much done. temperatures have dipped in the mid-40s in gaithersburg. 47 hagerstown. upper 50s fredricksburg and 62 in richmond. locally you can see the 40s in montgomery county and up toward columbia at 47 degrees. to the west leesburg is 50 with centreville at 52. springfield this morning 53 degrees. and in prince george's county, we've got a 52 over at andrews and baden as well. college park 53. looking outside on our michael & son weather camera, the capitol dome shining brightly this morning under clearing skies. 54 degrees. a north wind at 13. there's a little bit of a chill

out there. that barometer 29.61. that will be rising as high pressure builds in. we've had a lot of pressure swings lately. if your joints feel that you know what's going on without me telling you. more storms hitting the northwestern u.s. but the central part of the country nice and quiet. a few showers down in south texas. for us you see how the showers are stretched out from wisconsin coming through towards ohio, down to our southwest. the heaviest stuff through southwestern virginia. a storm system that pushed through us really bringing just some wet snow showers now on the back end to parpts of new york state and -- parts of new york state and new england. we'll watch the future cast. a relatively quiet pattern for us for the next couple of days. lots of sunshine here through the afternoon. clear skies tonight. that will allow another chilly night in spots. there are already some freeze warnings and frost advisories off to our north and east across extreme northeastern maryland, parts of pennsylvania and delaware and jersey for tonight. as we head through the day on

tuesday, again another sunny, quiet day. a little warmer. winds switch to the southwest. we should make below 70s in many spots tomorrow if not the upper 60s. by wednesday morning we're going to watch some showers here in west virginia. watch what happens in the afternoon. looks like some of these could develop toward us, especially south side of town. this is wednesday at 4:45. so we've had to introduce a shower threat back to the forecast for wednesday. but we had a dry march and this pattern is a fairly dry one over the next week or so. today 62. tonight about 40 in town. some mid-30s north and west but lighter winds. upper 60s tomorrow. low 70s wednesday with the threat for the afternoon shower, especially south. thursday we're back down to 60. friday 62. easter weekend looks pretty good. mid-60s saturday and around 70 on easter sunday. right now with sunshine. 4:46. here's comes monika santami with time saver traffic. thank you, howard. good morning, everybody. the beltway is looking great all around town. no big incidents to report.

we'll start off first with the bw parkway as promised and route 50 inside the beltway. looking great through cheverly. no problems out of annapolis or baltimore on both of the major thoroughfares heading to the northeast corridor. over to the beltway north of town. here's what it looks like in college park. still nice and quiet. this is the outer loop toward 95 and silver spring. all lanes are open. no problems on 95 as well. let's take you back over to the maps. this time we'll head all the way north to 270 and i-70. no problems. going to be okay toward urbana and rockville. we'll take a live look at democracy boulevard on the spur and over to the american legion bridge to 495. everything is fine on the west side of town as well. coming up in my next report, we'll take a look at 95 in virginia at 4:55. back to you. >> thank you, monika. a group of young peep spent part of their weekend -- people spent part of their weekend responding to the call for act civil.

safe and secure in her house. >> reporter: today's event capped a three-day global initiative conference. >> there are a lot of wonderful people who live here. they need and deserve the work you're going to do today. >> reporter: northeast washington wasn't the only place where former president bill clinton was helping out those in need. he was also doing something for the men and women serving overseas. just a few blocks away at the kelly miller middle school, more clinton global initiative volunteers were working alongside with the uso and some n.f.l. players. they were putting together about 3,000 care packages that will be sent to american troops, many of whom are serving in harm's way. in lincoln heights, armando trull, 9news now. >> he tells us mrs. queen will be able to move back into her refurbished home by the end of this month. the fda has decided not to ban bpa. that's that controversial chemical found in some packaging in plastic bottles.

the government agency says there is still not enough evidence to do that. the bpa is an industrial chemical that's used in many types of containers from baby bottles to continue cans -- tin cans. bpa could change the behavior in children under three in some studies making them more anxious or hyperactive. animal studies have linked bpa to cancer and many companies like campbell's soup have already phased it out of their containers. others say the government needs to carefully check who what will be used as an alternative. >> we don't know if the substitutes are safe or unsafe for the simple reason they haven't been properly tested. >> government scientists say they will continue to study the issue. about 90% of americans have traces of bpa in their bodies mainly coming from those food containers. believe this one or not. birth control pills may be the secret to your relationship or at least explain it. according to a new study from proceedings of the royal society, birth control pills may affect a woman's taste in

men. the data shows women on hormonal contraceptives tend to go for muscle strapped men. that attraction fades once it turns into a relationship. >> researchers of philadelphia have identified a protein they believe could be a useful tool in fighting pancreatic cancer. doctors found patients with higher levels of protein live longer periods before the pancreatic cancer returned. doctors are hoping this discovery will lead to a more effective chemotherapy for patients. new research finds breast cancer survival rates are lower in patients who have arthritis. doctors haven't pinpointed a reason for the link but think the immune cells which cause inflammation could be part of the puzzle. skin cancer is on the rise in young adults. there's a new study from the mayo clinic found dramatic increase in the first time melanoma in patients ages 18 to 39, especially women. researchers blame the rise in the use of the indoor tanning

paul dock hines, the assistant coach in the movie "remember the titans" died this weekend at a rehab facility in riverdale, maryland. coach hines and others were featured in the disney movie about the legendary 1971t.c. williams high school football team. coach hines was 74. "the hunger" games is still dominating the box office. in its second weekend on the big screen, it took in more than $61 million and pushed its domestic ticket sales total to $251 million. box office newcomer "wrath of the titans" came in at number two with a little more than $34 million in ticket sales. "mirror, mirror" rownted out the top -- rounded out the top three. last night munn music -- country miesk a-- last night the country music awards took place. taylor swift won over the fans who voted her entertainer of the world. it was a big night for husband
