it's 5:59. monika, you said we've got lots to talk about. we don't be like hearing that. sometimes i think when volumes are lighter than normal, people let their guard down unfortunately. this was the scene of an accident on the outer loop of the beltway at connecticut avenue. thankfully it looks like things have cleared up for a while there though traffic was very heavy in this area on the outer loop. i do expect some residual delays just out of this camera shot from sky 9. in fact, we'll take you over to a map. the accident again was here on the outer loop right here at connecticut avenue. i saw the flat bed picking up the damaged vehicle there. so again i think you're good to go through the area. on the northbound side of 395 near glebe road, an accident. let's take a live look on the northbound side. looks like authorities are still there on the right side of the road heading northbound on 395 just past glebe road. you'll find slow traffic forming as you head northbound this morning. we'll go back over to the graphics. metro red line has resumed normal service between fort totten and new york avenue. they were doing some track work

there. also marc train delays penn line 505 is now running 15 to 20 minutes late. in my next report, an update on the situation on 395 at 6:11. just a few hours, prince george's county is going to hope to shed some light on a very violent weekend. three people dead and five more hurt in separate shootings. >> delia goncalves is live outside police headquarters with more on this story. delia, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, andrea and mike. we're hoping police will give us more information about motives and suspects in a string of shootings take had police crisscrossing the county from friday night to early sunday morning. the first incident occurred friday at 10:30 p.m. three people were shot inside a hyattsville apartment. all are expected to survive, though. but 19-year-old lester flores of alexandria did not make it. the teen we're told died after a shooting in the 2000 block of woodberry street. then saturday evening two women were shot inside an apartment building on the 3500 block of

terrace drive in suitland. but police tell us they found the second victim at a liquor store a short distance away. >> we had two victims that suffered gunshot wounds. it apparently looks like the victim in the 3500 block of terrace drive sustained life threatening injuries, was transported to a hospital and pronounced. the second victim we're still trying to determine how they got to the 2300 block. they sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. apparently that victim went into a liquor store, found an off-duty sheriff would assisted that victim. >> reporter: police continue to update us finally saying on sunday morning they responded to a gunfight in a forestville home. two men were shot. only one man survived. coming up at 6:30, i'll have a look at some of the youngest victims of this weekend's violence. andrea, back to you. >> delia goncalves with that live update this morning in

palmer park, maryland. now to the district where police want to find a third suspect involved in a shooting in northwest. two others have been arrested for the shooting saturday outside an early voting location on van puren street. both -- van buren street. both men are around 20 years of old. it's going to be an important week in annapolis for the future of gambling in maryland. the house, ways and means committee will take up the bill to allow table games in the state. the plan paves the way for a casino at national harbor and for table games at the five approved slots parlors in the state. lawmakers are considering amendments to make deals more attractive to gaming companies. any expansion of gaming still needs to be approved by voters in a statewide referendum. the father of trayvon martin vows not to stop fighting until his son's killer is arrested. he spoke at a rally in miami on

sunday. more than a thousand people turned out for the rally. the 17-year-old martin was shot and killed a month ago by george zimmerman. the neighborhood watchman says it was in self-defense. the shooting happened about four hours north of miami in the orlando suburb of sanford. rallies calling for the arrest of the shooter george zimmerman were held nationwide on sunday, including one in alexandria. dozens of people gathered in market square and they spoke out against what they call the injustice in this case. alexander's mayor was there. he said he's also concerned about a law allowing people to use deadly force in cases like this one. >> we're also concerned about the stand down your rights law that allows folks that florida has in place along with 23 other states across this great country that will allow people to use in self-defense the excuse that they were attacked. that's why they did what they did. >> virginia does not have a similar stand your ground law.

the mayor says he will use his political power to make sure one is not adopted. it is 6:05. jessica doyle is off today but we're still watching your money. moments of panic sunday for visa credit and debit card users. for about 40 minutes a technical glitch prevented people from using their cards. visa says the problem was caused by a computer glitch. the giant credit card company is updating its systems. a spokeswoman says everything should be back to normal by now. the newest target for identity thieves? children. thieves are targeting young children and teenagers and sometimes getting their information in data breaches. two california parents recently discovered their 7-year-old son was connected to $15,000 in charge purchases and opened six bank accounts. of course it really wasn't the boy. rather it was identity thieves. the term trade commission says children are often targets because they have no history of

debt. >> typically the way that that is discovered is the child turns 16, 17, and starts to apply for schools or car loans and thieves know that. they know that if they get a social security number of a youngster, it could be years before parents have any reason to check on the credit of that child. >> the easiest way to protect your child is to protect his or her social security number. don't carry that card in your wallet or purse. admit it. you already had plans to call in rich to work today. >> we did. we were thinking about it, that's for sure. we were going to win that $656 megamillions jackpot but chances are like us you didn't. >> three tickets matched all six numbers on friday night's drawing. one of them was sold in milford mills, maryland. my family said you didn't buy your ticket in baltimore county, did you? no, we didn't. the winner hasn't come forward yet. they bought the tickets just hours before the drawing friday night. the maryland lottery offered

accident cleanup continues along the right side of the road. expect delays getting by. coming up in my next report, an update on this and other virginia roads at 6:17. it is 6:11. at least two more people were killed this morning in government raids in syria. it comes as we expect a new report on the violence there. >> that's one of the stories making news this morning at 6:11. today former u.n. secretary- general kofi annan will deliver a report on the crisis in syria. at least 9,000 people have been killed on crackdowns and antigovernment protesters. annan is calling for cease-fire to allow all sides to discuss a political solution. two british sailors have finally been rescued off the california coast. they were brought to shore by the coast guard. their yacht was hit by a monster wave saturday. the sailors were taking part in an around the world race. scn skin cancer is on the rise in young adults and tanning beds is the reason use.

the mayo clinic is seeing a jump of melanoma patients between the ages of 18 and 39 and many of them are women. the yumpt of virginia is -- the university of virginia is now home of steel from the world trade center. they have a piece thanks to the dedz indication of one of -- dedication of one of its students. >> we feel this memorial is a great way to bring their honor to campus and bring their memory back here. >> a tangible piece ever the september 11 terrorist attacks find a new home at the university of virginia to honor the 3,000 victims. >> i felt that there was definitely a place here at uva for a memorial like this. >> reporter: he is a fourth -- he is in his fourth year at uva and a charlottesville volunteer fire department. he led the way to bring a piece of steel here. >> this is a mission from my agency. >> reporter: instrumental in

howard is here with our weather first. >> chilly. we have windchills in the upper 30s and low 40s. i know we hit some raindrops a few hours ago. they're gone. so the rain is not the issue. the feel in the air is the issue. we start you off with the bus stop forecast. not everybody is off today. when i made this forecast, i'm thinking mid-40s to mid-50s. i may have to lower these numbers just a little bit as the cooler air is coming down. got a few spots north in the low 40s right now. skies are clearing and our sunrise at 6:54 sets at about 7:33. lots of sunshine today and also a breeze as well. at times gusting 25, even 30 miles an hour. that will bring in some cooler air so that by 11:00 we're only going to manage to get back to 53. midday temps in the mid-50s to low 60s for highs towards the middle and latter part of the afternoon with a 5:00 p.m. temperature of 60 but a north wind still at 13 miles an hour. rain overnight. we had a little bit. a lot of the area was really dry in march.

we had one of the warmest marches on record. we had one of the very dry march as we. only about an inch and change in many areas. when you start spring warm and dry, the ground water isn't there. it's starting to dry out f. we don't get some more regular rainfall, that does not bode well for the growing season as we head forward through the spring and summer. it's down to 43 in gaithersburg. 44 laurel. crofton 47. off to the south we still have a couple of spots like fort belvoir and manassas holding on to 50 but already down to 46 in lovettsville and to the east 48 in baden and prince george's county. looking outside on our michael & son weather camera, just starting to get a little bit of brightening of the predawn sky here at 6:15 as we look at the capitol dome with 49 degrees. partly cloudy skies. a north wind at 20 gives us a windchill of 42. in some areas it feels like it's in the upper 30s so jacket weather for sure. the barometer continues to rise quickly with high pressure building in. you can see the chill come down toward the northeast, caribou

29. boston 39. also in the rockies but look, look at all the warmth in the middle of the country. still 70 in kansas city. nashville 66. for the next couple of days we're going to take a piece of that milder air and move it toward us. got some snow in the rockies still on april 2. the rain showers we were looking at, they're well south of us now and kind of down to southwestern virginia, north carolina, even those showers i don't think will be lasting all that much longer. maybe just another couple of hours. rain and snow across parts of eastern new england as well. the future cast, nice and quiet as everything moves quickly off to the south and east today although breezy behind the system. winds die down tonight. we'll dip into the 30s. mid-30s outside the beltway. that could mean a little bit of frost north and west to about 40 in town. a sunny day tomorrow with highs upper 60s to low 70s. maybe a shower by wednesday afternoon, especially south of d.c. 62 today. about 40 tonight. this is for reagan national. colder north and west.

warmer tomorrow, 69. wednesday 72. could be that afternoon shower mainly south. cooler thursday and friday, low 60s but right now the weekend looks pretty good with 70 and mostly sunny the outlook at the moment anyway for easter. it is 6:16. here comes monika with a look at time saver traffic. we still have all those issues you're talking about. we had two issues happen simultaneously. one was cleared out of the roadway pretty quickly and that was the outer loop at connecticut avenue. an accident now gone. i think so are the delays as you head on the outer loop with spring break. that certainly helps. we'll take a live look 270 southbound. here's what it looks like at falls road from our sky 9. no problems to report as you head in from frederick all the way down to the point where the lanes divide. so that's good news for 270 commuters this morning. we'll go back over to the maps this time northbound 395. this accident has been moved to the right shoulder but it did cause some delays. in fact, let's take a live look there on the northbound side. you can see the flashing lights here. all of your main lanes are open but looks like traffic is still

exhibition game at nationals park. look for mike hydeck in the stand. the nats open their season thursday afternoon in chicago. the new orleans saints now have a lawyer. the n.f.l. players association hired legal counsel for the team in case it faces criminal charges related to the bounty scandal. former defensive coordinator gregg williams played players to knock opponents out of the game. he's been suspended indefinite. saints coach sean peyton has been suspended for the upcoming season. there's talk he will appeal. nascar was in martinsville, virginia sunday for the fast relief 500. two laps to go. jimmy johnson, jeff gordon spin out. newman holds on to capture the checkered flapping, his first win of the year. 6:24. still ahead, what motivated a mustache march through the

maryland and the district tuesday. voters in d.c. will cast ballots in the republican primary. democrats will vote in a primary for the at large city council member as well as primaries in different ward races. in maryland there's the g.o.p. primary as well as primary races in several congressional districts and in the u.s. senate race. polls in both the district and maryland are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. tomorrow. newt gingrich will campaign in maryland today ahead of tuesday's primary. he'll visit the frederick motor company this morning. then it's off to hood college this afternoon. polls will show mitt romney will most likely win tomorrow's contest in both maryland and d.c. >> the republican field isn't really focusing on maryland or d.c. instead wisconsin is the big prize. >> it will be the most competitive state in tomorrow's primaries. melissa rainy has more on the candidates. >> reporter: mitt romney showed confidence and took aim at the president while campaigning in wisconsin sunday. >> this president can't run on

his record. so he's going to try in every way he can to divert to some other kind of attack and try and have people disqualifying our nominee which will probably be be me and instead of talking about where we've been and where we're going as a nation. >> reporter: newt gingrich scaled back his campaign infrastructure last week and tempered his attacks on romney. but he told cbs' "face the nation ," he's launching a come from behind strategy comparing his long shot bid to saturday's college basketball victory. >> kansas last night set the second record for coming from behind. they were down 9 points at the half. that is the second biggest margin to come back from in the final four series. so i'm going to take kansas as a model. >> reporter: rick santorum also compared the republican race to the big game. >> we aren't even at half time, folks. not even half the delegates have been selected in this race. >> reporter: as for ron paul, he told "face the nation" he has no intention of throwing in the towel either.

>> the votes haven't been counted. there's quite a few states right now, six or seven states that we're doing quite well through the delegate process. we don't even know who's getting what so far and who knows what will happen on the first vote at the convention. a mott so serious political protest on the streets of washington sunday. check this out. annual event dubbed the million mustache march. hundreds of mustached men hit the streets from the capital to the white house. they are calling for $260 tax deduction for men with mustaches. they say that's because mustaches improve their looks and that boosts the economy. the protest is actually sort of a fund-raiser to the charity aimed at providing clean drinking water worldwide. very cute. it is 6:35. we expect to hear from prince george's county police in just a few hours on one of the most violent weekends in the county this year. delia goncalves is live at police headquarters with more on this story.

delia? >> reporter: andrea, a violent weekend indeed. the shooting started friday morning and by the time they ended sunday morning, eight people were shot. three of them died. the first incident friday. the only victim i should say rather who has been identified is 19-year-old lester flores. he died we're told during a shooting on woodberry street. however, three people shot friday night at an apartment are expected to survive. then police tell us saturday evening two women were shot at a suitland apartment building. the woman inside the apartment died. the other we're told was shot in the leg. she ran to a nearby liquor store for help. then police tell us just a couple of hours later they were called to fairlawn street outside a carnival held there for a report of gunfire. there they discovered two juvenile boys. >> we haven't been able to confirm a shooting. it appeared that the victims of the type of injuries they sustained were bruises.

we're still looking as far as suspect information. it appeared they may have been assaulted in some way. as of right now we don't know how many suspects are involved. >> the violence came to a tragic end sunday morning when police responded to a forestville gunfight inside of a home. two men were shot. only one man survived. no motives, no suspects, at any point so far with these shootings. we're hoping that police will have more information at the 10:30 news conference a little later this morning. back to you. >> thank you, delia goncalves reporting live this morning from palmer park, maryland. a former annandale high school student is being charged with making a bomb threat at his alma mater. 19-year-old marco toledo of burke, virginia was arrested friday. he called the channel 9news room friday morning and told us about the threat. we got his name and phone number. then passed that information along to fairfax county police and it helped them arrest

toledo. there were no explosives found. students across the region are sleeping in today as spring break begins for most of them. in fairfax county, high school students might soon be able to sleep a little later after all -- even after the holiday. once again the county is weighing a plan to begin high school classes later in the day. research shows high school students do better when classes begin later. the county school board will vote on the measure april 12. 6:38 now. jessica doyle is off today but we are still watching your money this morning. for the first time in a while gas price us didn't go up overnight. we just checked the aaa fuel gauge report. regular gas in d.c. dropped a whopping one-tenth of a percent. the regional average is $4.10 a gallon. here are a few places you can fill up for less than $4 a gallon. check out the crown gas station in northeast washington. it's on the inbound side of new york avenue at fairview avenue.

be really nice. sunshine, light winds. 1:00 temperatures by then should be in the mid- to upper 60s. oh, 3:00 start. even better. it will be closer to 70 by then. >> ben's chili bowl, here i come. >> let's talk about this morning. it is a chilly one with the temps down in the 40s to low 50s and windchills about 10 degrees cooler than that. we'll have sunshine around with temps about 46 to 56. maybe a couple of spots north of town even chillier than that. today lots of sunshine. by the middle of the day only 55 so we're not seeing a lot of recovery with the brink north winds at 16. still going to have gusts 20 to 25 by then. this afternoon still a breezy day, highs in the low 60s. about 60 at 4:00 p.m. with an 8:00 p.m. temperature now down in the 50s. with the north winds getting lighter, winds should be fairly light. well north of d.c., leesburg, you might be looking at a little patchy frost. this morning we had some

showers earlier. there they go. they're gone. no more problems with the rain but the chill is in the air. low to mid-40s now. it's 43 in gaithersburg. mid-50s still in fredricksburg. easton at 46 degrees. when you factor in the winds, though, now it feels like it's in the upper 30s to low 40s in many areas. definitely a brisk morning as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera. a pretty shot. clearer skies. 49 degrees. on top of the hour 6:00 a.m. reagan national did report a few clouds but those winds are north of 20, gusting to 29. the air is drying out. barometer is rising. high pressure builds in. behind this system which is sinking south and east, high pressure coming in here. the difference between the storm system off shore, the pressure difference that is and the high moving in, driving those winds. but as the high settles in late today, really tonight it's going to come down toward us. the winds will get lighter. so that's one reason we're looking at temperatures in the suburbs mid-30s to about 40 in washington. here we go for tonight into tomorrow morning. tomorrow looks like another very sunny day.

today is monday, april 2. you made it past april fool's day. you're okay. a check of the news. we're expecting to hear from prince george's county later this morning about a very violent weekend. three people were killed, two others were hurt in a series of shootings. they do not appear to be related according to police. it's one of the more violent outbursts in the county this year. the local football assistant coach who inspired the movie "remember the titans" has died. paul hines died saturday. he helped lead the legendary integrated t.c. williams high school football team in 19716789 coach hines was 74. the men's ncaa championship is tonight. the kansas jayhawks taking on the kentucky wildcats. wildcats beat the jay hawks when the teams met last november. tipoff just after 9:00 right here on channel 9. cbs this morning is up next. secretary of state hillary clinton talks about the ongoing violence in syria. >> before that we have one more check of traffic and weather. keep it right here on 9news
