it happened near 14th street and columbia road in northwest this afternoon. >> reporter: in columbia heights a d.c. police major crash unit is investigating a deadly accident. the deadly encounter happened shortly after 3 p.m. on this side alley off columbia road. >> waiting here in the alley as the trash was being picked up. >> reporter: witnesses tell 9 news now that it involved this garbage truck and someone walking behind it. >> after the trash was picked up the van -- the trash truck started going in reverse. >> reporter: the silver gray sedan was next to the garbage truck. its driver told police that he saw the victim tangled underneath the wheels. [ speaking spanish ] >> reporter: his wife says her husband then got out of his car and waved the garbage truck down. >> after a minute or two everyone got out of their cars. people came out of the building and recognized that there was a man had been struck lying there

in the alleyway. an update on the deadly shooting in culpeper by a police officer. a prosecutor wants a special grand jury to investigate the death of 54-year-old patricia cook. back in february a police officer was responding to a report of a suspicious person when he approached cook in her car. state police say the cop opened fire killing her after she drove off with his arm trapped in her car window and refused to stop. an eyewitness told 9 news now that the officer's arm was never caught. that officer in the shooting has not been publicly identified. coming up tonight at 7:00 on 9 news now march madness, we'll preview tonight's championship and let you know about a new way you ken joy the game. that's tonight -- can enjoy the game. that's tonight 9 news now at 7:00. words of caution today about people claiming to be mega millions winners. lottery officials say they don't believe a thing until they see the ticket in hand.

the buzz today in maryland started with an article in the new york post quoting a baltimore woman who said she's the maryland winner worth 218 million, but she was a no show at lottery headquarters today when pressed by the newspapers later saying, "i don't know if i won. some of the numbers were familiar." >> april fool's day was yesterday. we get claims all the time of somebody who has won. it doesn't matter until they come in, show proof, show that ticket and that ticket has to be the real deal. >> so far no one has stepped forward in maryland to collect that world record prize of $649 million drawn friday night. co-winners in kansas and illinois also remain a mystery. it's been almost one year since the georgetown water front was flooded out by water from the potomac river. restaurants like tony and joe's and nick's riverside grill have been closed ever since except for an outdoor patio, budget as kristin fisher reports, they're racing -- but as kristin fisher

we've been following the latest developments in a story out of oakland, california. eddiedly shooting on the campus of a small nursing and theology school called oikos university. police now firm seven people shot to death and three others wounded. >> a gunman came into the college and fired multiple shots. we do have fatalities. we additionally have victims who have suffered from gunshot wounds. >> officers say they do have someone in custody. they picked him up several miles away at a shopping center in alameda. the man who founded the university says the suspect is a former nursing student at the school. the latest developments in the shooting of trayvon martin focus on the 911 tapes from that night. analysts are trying to determine whether screams heard on the tapes are those of george zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed the unarmed teenager. zimmerman said he fired in self- defense. according to the police report,

he told police that night he yelled for help during the incident, but audio engineers who analyzed the 911 recordings for a florida newspaper say they don't believe that voice on the tape is zimmerman's. >> after 28 years of doing this i would put my reputation on the line and say this is not george zimmerman screaming. >> meanwhile a gun rights group started a legal defense fund for zimmerman. just ahead a local university remembers two students killed over the weekend, details after the break. >> there's been a mass shooting at a california medical school and the jetblue pilot who had a meltdown appeared in court, these stories and the world's top news tonight on the cbs evening news.

afternoon. the national guardsman served two tours of duty in iraq and afghanistan before enrolling in school and joining the cappa sigma fraternity. >> everybody is in shock. >> he was like the older brother we didn't have. you could go to him with anything. we really miss him. >> police say his death does not appear suspicious. just hours after his body was found a car hit and killed ryan bailey while he was crossing york road near washington avenue. the driver left the scene. so far no arrests have been made. police are investigating a suspected meth lab in a dorm room at christopher newport university in newport news, virginia. the wilson residence hall was reportedly evacuated friday night after police found a suspicious substance in one of the rooms. the university says items recovered from that room are now being analyzed by a lab in norfolk. they invented the joystick and the gps. it's not apple. it's the u.s. navy and today the military opened its doors to give us a rare look into one
