california college he made it clear what he had in mind. he told them get in line, i am going to kill you all. when he opened fire yesterday morning at least seven were kill and three others were killed. the suspect, a former student, surrendered at a nearby shopping center. police say they have no motive. >> reporter: i can tell you at this hour the 43-year-old one ll goh remains in jail. they say while they have their suspect, they still don't have a motive as to what led to the school shooting that ended seven lives. gunshots could be heard outside a christian college in oakland, california. witnesses say a former student pulled out a gun and started shooting people inside classrooms at oikos university monday morning. >> i heard a gunshot sound and right after that, i heard one

woman scream. >> reporter: heavily armored police rushed to the scene and surrounded the campus. he was teaching a class. >> we didn't know what was happened. >> reporter: officers tried to rescue others and pulled victims out of stretchers. police say the suspect turned himself in to police at a shopping mall shortly after the shooting. investigators are still here at the college collecting evidence. oakland's police chief say it could take days to piece together exactly what happened. >> very, very bloody scene with lots of evidence, so we're going to take our time and collect evidence and process this so that we can have a good solid case to present to the d.a.'s office. >> reporter: this is the deadliest shooting at a school in five years. >> it seems in the last decade we've gotten used to seeing senseless mass killings like this, and we'll have to question

the availability of guns. >> reporter: the mayor says its members are in pain and will gather for a memorial tonight to honor the victims. and goh was taken into custody at a nearby supermarket after apparently telling the security guard he needed to talk to police because he shot people. and, betty, according to police, he phoned his father to tell him about the shooting and the police chief said his father then phoned the officials as well. >> so tragic. thank you. five people were injured when an experimental plane crashed into a florida supermarket. the twin engine plane had just taken off from a airport 20 miles west of daytona beach when witnesses say it crashed into the supermarket roof. >> the airplane took off over the top of us and it started sputtering and the engine had flames coming out of it. we watched it turn like he was trying to turn around and then

he dropped straight out of the sky. >> there were two people onboard the plane. both suffered severe burns. people in the supermarket were injured. this morning the government has offered a $10 million award for the leader of the pakistani group. he allegedly founded the group with the help of the pakistani group. the shootings and bombings in mumbai lasted three days, killed 166 people and wounded hundreds of others. mitt romney is hoping today is the day he is able to pull away in the race for the republican presidential nomination. voters in wisconsin, maryland, and washington, d.c. take part in today's primaries. mitt romney and rick santorum have been fighting hardest for votes in wisconsin and after today's contest romney could have more than half the delegates needed for the nomination.

we have more on this. good morning dorte. >> reporter: it would help mitt romney sew up his party's nomination but he's still fending off attacks even from the white house, and last night he answered some tough questions about his mormon faith. at a rally in wisconsin last night a ron paul supporter asked mitt romney if you agree with mormon scripture that calls it sinful to have interracial children. he recounted his role as pastor in a church. >> and i asserted that role for about ten years and ghav me the occasion to work with people on a very personal basis that helped with marital difficulties, health difficulties. he's leading. santorum hammered away at his

credentials but urged supporters whoever becomes the nominee. >> moderate massachusetts governor is not going to make th that. he'll pull out the etch a sketch and we'll be stuck again with someone who's, yes, better. >> reporter: meanwhile the white house seems to think mitt romney will eventually emerge as the republican standard bearer. for the first time he criticized obama by name. >> in all these fights, mitt romney stood with big oil. >> reporter: a new poll shows the president leading in swing sfats due in large part to in sur subsequent support by women voters. he's trying to get a foothold on women voters. he said the economic hardship faced by women can be traced

back to president obama. betty. >> thank you for that report. one of the key issues in this year's election will be president obama's health care reform act. the supreme court is currently considering the case. it's unusual for a president to comment on a case before the court, but, yesterday at the white house, mr. obama said he was confident the law would be upheld. >> ultimately i'm confident that the supreme court will not take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected congress. >> a decision is expected in june. meanwhile the supreme court ruled yesterday that people arrested even for minor offenses can be strip searched in jail. the case involves a new jersey man who was strip searched two

times after being arrested for a fine he actually had paid. the syrian government has agreed to a cease-fire, but syrian troops continued to battle rebel forces yesterday. the u.n. estimates more than 9,000 people have been killed. c kofi annan says this is the first time they have accepted to stop. we'll show you what happened to the drivers. plus, the celebration of the university of kentucky's basketball championship gets a little out of hand. first, though, scott pelley has a preview of tonight's "cbs evening news." >> last year he took on his state's public employee unions. now he could become just the third governor in u.s. history to be recalled from office. we will talk to wisconsin's scott walker tonight on the "cbs evening news." d chantix worked . it's a medication i could take and still smoke,

yikes. this is not how it's taught in truck driver school. a tow truck as you saw there pulling a big rig on an icy mountain in norway. the driver of the truck actually escaped in time as the truck slipped sideways over the cliff taking the truck with it. he dust jump out, but the driver of the other vehicle was not able to get out. he was hospitalized with several broken bones. in wisconsin an 80-year-old woman with no pilot training managed an emergency landing in a light plane. the woman's 81-year-old husband had been at the controls but he lost con schu shusness and later died. she was coached by another

pilot. the art collector finds 15 minutes of fame at a garage sale. ashley morrison is here with all of that. a mixed day for overseas stocks. toque yoes ee nisei lost half a percent while hong kong's hang seng roetz more than a per cement. the dow picked up 52 points while the nasdaq gained 28. the federal government is suing one of the biggest banks in canada. they're accusing the royal bank of canada of completing hundreds of millions of dollars of futures trades. the suit alleges the bank received tax credits because of those trades. a pennsylvania meat company is blaming its bankruptcy on the so-called pink slime. the company said media coverage of the additive has led to changes in the market. it's made of beef trimmings and

treated with ammonia before adding to ground beef. yesterday the governor called for an investigation into what he called a smear campaign against the additive. we still don't know who won friday's mega millions jackpot. they have sold a record amount of tickets over the last nine weeks and that has pumped more than $31 million into a fund devoted to illinois public schools. and it may not be a winning mega millions ticket but a british man picked up something pretty valuable at a garage sale. he paid $5 for a sketch drawn by andy warhol. the sketch is believed to have been drawn when warhol was 10 or 11 years old. it could be worth more than $2 million. and that's what i call making a profit. >> absolutely. nice return. all right. ashley morrison here in new york. thank you. straight ahead, your tuesday morning weather. and in sports, a special "k" night.

snow. thunderstorms. some severe will continue in the southern and central plains. the southeast will see scattered thunderstorms this afternoon. a cold front will bring showers to the midwest. all right. now to sports and the battle of new orleans, kansas and kentucky for the ncaa basketball championship. the wildcats dominated early, leading by 18 in the first half. kentucky's de-ron lamb was the game's top scorer with 22. freshman phenom thoentd davis had since rebounds. the jayhawks got to the big game with a series of comeback wince, and in the second half it looked like they just might do it again, surging within five points. but the katz sank five free throws. kentucky coach john calipari said the players did all he asked of them. >> i wanted the to be one for the ages, go out and show everyone the skiend of team you are. even though you're young, it

followed be some thunderstorms in atlanta, 84 there. st. louis, thunderstorms, 85. cloudy in denver, 48, and rainy in seattle, 51. the u.s. census bureau was surprised by how many americans were looking forward to looking back. yesterday's release of the 1940 census set off an internet avalanche. 22 million hits overwhelmed the bureau's computers. anthony mason looks at what you might find when the world of the 1940s is back online. >> you cannot know your country unless your country knows you. >> reporter: the details of the 1940 census show a street level view of a united states emerging from the great depression and on the brink of a world war. connie potter of the national archives says everybody census is a reflection of the preceding decade. >> the questions the census asks refer back to questions that the country needs to know the

answers to. >> reporter: with 15% of the adult population unemployed in 1940, for the first time census takers asked about income. >> what's interesting is the highest salary you can write down is $5,000 plus. >> reporter: they also asked about education. 5% had a bachelor's degree in 1940. today it's 28%. >> reporter: now this is your family down here. >> yeah. this is my family. >> reporter: david klieman will be looking for details on his parents and grandparents. >> reporter: what is it that excites you about this census? >> new information, new discoveries, doing family history is about being a detective. and the census is a new source. >> reporter: even franklin roosevelt filled out the census in 1940. occupation, president of the united states. you'll find a future president too. 29-year-old ronald reagan, then still an actor.

anyone can search the 3.9 million pages released for the first time online. at 1940census.gov. it won't be available for another six to nine months. >> so how did they decide when to put out the census? it was arbitrary actually. after the 1870 census was released in 1942 the census bureau and the national archive agreed to stick to that schedule and wait 72 years for the census information to be released. >> that is so interesting. in other news, two sailors injured during an around-the-world race are back on dry land this morning. the crew members arrived in alameda, california, on a cutter. they were rescued after theriot was hit by a giant wave on the pacific ocean. coming up on the local news,

>> and? >> anny's correct though. this afternoon it's going to be a gorgeous afternoon. you're shivering because we've got frost and freeze advisories and warnings north and west of d.c. but it's going to be a beautiful afternoon around here. let's get you started though with a look at the day planner on this tuesday morning. we're down to 48 in d.c.. by noon we're in the upper 50s and this afternoon upper 60s a couple of spots even low 70s winds north to west 5, 10 miles an hour. overnight we've seen clear skies and with light winds that's allowed radiational cooling to occur. temperature can easily escape the heat -- the heat can escape into space and where the winds are calm that's where it's the coldest. north and west of town in the dark and blue, frost advisories, that's including prince william, culpeper and north of that in the light blue that's the freeze warning until 9:00 this morning. temperatures really vary depending on the winds. it's 47 in leesburg but

manassas and culpeper are 34. frederick 35 and ten degrees warmer in martinsburg and even south and east of town a few spots in the 30s. it could be some patchy frost as the winds go real calm there in places like cambridge and la plata as well. this afternoon sunshine and a beauty. temperatures upper 60s to even 71 there for fredericksburg and manassas. 68 in frederick. let's go to monika samtani here at 4:27. and you've got a list of things to talk about. yeah, it's construction. >> construction. >> yeah, they decided to just do it all last night. i don't know if they'll ever be done howard. if you're planning to head over to the beltway in virginia, that's what we're talking about. lots of construction you see all the cones here. first of all on the beltway in springfield also on the outer loop at braddock road. watch out for construction and on the inner loop between 66 and route 7 up here, three  lanes are blocked with construction overnight. let's take a look at the northbound side of i-95 in newington. that's fine no problems to

report as you head up to springfield and on to 395 to the 14th street bridge. that's doing fine. back over to the maps this time here on the dulles toll road you want to watch out for the construction on the westbound side. it was blocked with the beltway and you are being diverted over to the georgetown pike and back to the beltway. keep that in mind this morning, and we'll take a last live look at 270. a little tease here for you at montrose road, no problems here. back to you guys. thank you. mitt romney is looking to pull off a sweep in today's primaries in wisconsin, maryland and here in washington, d.c.. the gop front rupper is ahead in the polls in both maryland and the district and he's looking to extend his delegate lead. >> rick santorum says it's possible he could pull off an upset in ww but he insists -- wisconsin but he insists no matter what he's not dropping out of the race for the republican nomination. it shows mitt romney leading rick santorum by eight points

in wisconsin. yesterday the former massachusetts governor enlisted the help of former congressman paul ryan. >> if we can get a good vote out of wisconsin and we can go into this race and win this. >> romney is counting on a clean sweep today to help bring him closer to clinching the nomination. newt gingrich spent his monday campaigning in frederick, maryland. polls show beginning vip a distant -- gingrich is a distant third. voters should clean house on the city council and start with today's democratic primary. the newspaper says incumbents berry, orange and alexander should be defeated. >> bruce johnson has been talking to the incumbents and their challengers. he has the story. >> people just feel like they constantly hear about things that are either inappropriate or illegal. >> reporter: he has the "washington post" endorsements an
