the backing of former governor bob ehrlich, mitt romney is expected to take the whole state. in fact, in early voting, romney proved to be ahead of his rival rick santorum who chose not to visit maryland at all. instead, focusing on wisconsin where the future of this race relies. if romney fails to pick up wisconsin today, pundits say it will be a blow to his campaign and if santorum takes the state, well, it will give him the momentum he needs to forge ahead in this race. >> i think he's going to be voted out of office in part because he's failed to turn around the economy. it took far too long for the economy to get stronger. my policies are designed not to grow government as he did but instead encourage small business to grow and thrive in this country. >> i think we've proven we can do pretty well organizationally and with some limited resources do some pretty extraordinary things and with almost

and d.c. voter guides. we have an update now on the police involved shooting in culpeper, virginia. a prosecutor wants a special grand jury to investigate the death of 54-year-old patricia cook. in february, a police officer responding to a report of a suspicious person approached cook in her car. state police claim the cop opened fire killing her after she drove off with the officer's arm trapped in her car window. but an eyewitness told 9news now that the officer's arm was never caught. that officer who killed cook has not been publicly identified. and we're waiting to learn the name of the man struck and killed by a trash truck in northwest washington. it happened monday afternoon in an alley off columbia road. witnesses tell 9news now the man was walking behind the truck. he got pinned underneath when the driver put the truck in reverse. witnesses say they did hear the truck's backup warning sound go off. just about 5:05. jessica is off today but we

still have the numbers for you. major asian stocks closed mostly lower this morning and trading in europe is just getting underway. this follows gains from yesterday in the u.s.. the dow climbed 52 points -- well, you may have heard of something called a flash mob. that's when people all get together at a time and place and sometimes they break into song and do other silly things but how about a cash mob? have you ever heard of that? the goal of the cash mob is to get people together and patronize a local business with ties to a certain community. this month, a national cash mob effort is underway. one group organizing them is in the d.c. area. it's called think local first. >> in one targeted time, we're bringing local business more customers. more visibility. and an infusion of cash. the difference is that we're not asking them to discount any of their merchandise.

>> infusion of cash. that sounds nice right? for a business owner. one of the first sites was old city green. it's a nursery. the owner says his business increased 20% the day the mob got there. not bad. is she one of the megamillions winners or isn't she? was it an april fools' day. mirlande wilson claims a friend bought one of the three winning tickets for her with $1 wilson found on the floor at the mcdonald's where she works in maryland. this story changes every day. >> i know. >> but wilson's co-workers told the "new york post" they also took part in the lottery pool and they may be entitled to share the winnings. the single mother of 7 from haiti showed copies of the pool tickets and none matched the winning number for the jackpot but we do know wilson has not shown up at lottery headquarters. >> we get claims all the time of somebody who's won.

least the roads are fine. on the west side of town here's the american legion bridge both loops of the beltway look great. no problems coming in on 66 from the west or the dulles toll road. coming up in my next report, we'll focus on virginia at 5:17. back to you mike. thanks monika. a suspect is in custody after a mass shooting at a small california college. police say former student 43- year-old one goh opened fire at oikos university. search people were killed and three others injured. goh later surrendered to police. a small plane crashed into a florida grocery store last night. the two people on board were seriously injured. three people inside the store were also hurt but they're expected to recover. witnesses say they saw the plane start to sputter before it veered into the store. the jet blue pilot charged with disrupting a flight last week has another hearing coming up on thursday. after making his first court appearance yesterday, clayton osbon asked not to enter a plea

nature at its most delicious. welcome back to 9news now. at 5:14. the egg mcmuffin of meteorological forecasters, howard bernstein is here. >> that's great for a breakfast show. >> a chilly day today but how warm was last month? >> it was warm but when we break gown the numbers it was a record warm march. to the forecast quickly. this was the warmest march in washington record history. and that goes back to 1871. as far as our weather records go. top five, you can see there -- just to let you know this was the fifth straight month above average and also ten degrees above average which is amazing for a month long period and it was also the sixth driest march with 1.0 # inches of rain.

so we need rain and we need cooler temperatures and well we've got the chill this morning and maybe a couple of showers tonight and south of town on wednesday. clear and chilly this morning. low 30s in spots to the mid and upper 40s in the warm areas like reagan national and anybody right by the bay of the river you're going to be a little bit warmer. as far as our day planner, well, we're going to see a lot of sunshine. that's going to help. winds not too bad at all today. at degrees by noon -- 59 degrees by noon and northwest winds at 6 becoming westerly 5, 7, maybe 10 miles an hour with highs in the upper 60s perhaps low 70s in a couple of spots but lots of sunshine today. don't forget the sunscreen. the nationals host the red sox, preseason baseball. 3:00 p.m. should be near perfect weather for that. freeze warnings up north though near the pennsylvania border from carroll county west to frederick and washington counties until 9:00 and in howard, prince william, fauquier, shenandoah valley down to culpeper, frost warnings are in effect until

9:00 a.m. and you're seeing temperatures close to freezing and some are way up. it depends on a. the reporting station and whether or not there are any winds where they are. baltimore and frederick, you'll notice culpeper with the frost but at reagan national the river keeps them warm. they're at 45 degrees, a couple more lights coming in on the white house here on the michael & son weather camera. clear skies 45 degrees a light north wind and a dew point at 34 degrees. storm system in the middle of the country bringing severe weather to oklahoma and heavy snow to the mountains of southern colorado. northern new mexico. they're going to be one, maybe two feet at the highest elevations. for us though, high pressure's in control today but we're watching some of storms up here. some of this could actually make it toward us overnight tonight in the form of a few showers but then south of washington tomorrow afternoon as a threat for showers. so today 69 degrees. shower tonight. not nearly as colds. 48 to 54 and that's much warmer

than this morning. 74 tomorrow with a couple of showers possible south of town. we won't be as warm and then thursday cooler only about 60. friday also low 60s with mid 60s saturday and upper 60s on easter sunday with what should be a good deal of sunshine. 5:16. we go to monika samtani with timesaver traffic. still smiling. i am still smiling and that's because you know it's going to be nice day and we've got late clearing construction and that's really the only big thing going on right now. is on the northbound side of i- 95 we're hearing it's right here at the springfield interchange in fact, we'll take a live look there. just going to see some flashing lights but luckily no delays on the northbound side of i-95. as they clear up that construction i believe that the lanes are open and it's not affecting traffic. we'll go a little further north on to 395 northbound and here's what it looks like at duke street. great time to head out. nice and light as you go up to the 14th street bridge. this time on the inbound side of i-66 on the maps on the dulles toll road no problems out of centreville or leesburg.

breeze but even la plata going to be some frost down there also at 34. hey watch it this afternoon with the sunscreen. we'll be in the upper 60s. overall things aren't looking too bad. a couple of small incidents in springfield. that's in just a moment. let's first focus on maryland. on the inbound side of route 50, as you come in on route 301 over to route 50 past 97 you will be fine. in fact let's take a live look at route 50 inbound side here at sandy point as you cross the chesapeake bay bridge. you will be fine. the length over to the beltway and inside the beltway through cheverly. same story on the bw parkway from baltimore. back to the maps to the north side of town now, looking great on 95 out of baltimore. all the northern corridors going to the beltway including 270 out of frederick and we'll take a last live look on the northbound side of i-95 in springfield. there was a single vehicle accident at route 644 and then at the springfield interchange and they've been moving the cameras around to look for that but i don't think it's affecting traffic. coming up in my next report, at

5:38, a look on the west side of town. back to you guys. thank you monika. bombshells foal last night at a meeting of the anne arundel county council. >> emerson davis testified he recently asked the justice department to investigate his own police department. county executive john leopold was indicted last month on charges of misconduct in office. davis claims leopold got help from police chief james teare to investigate political enemies. he says the public deserves answers. >> who knew what what it's going to be held accountable for it? this is the biggest black eye we've had on the department in the 35 years i've been here. >> deputy chief davis is retiring later this year. in two weeks the council will vote on suspending chief tear. leopold has denied the charges and he is scheduled to go to trial this fall. in campaign 2012, maryland

and d.c. hold their presidential primaries today as does wisconsin. but for many local voters, there are many down ticket races that are important. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live in potomac with more on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the polls open here at 7:00 a.m. some hot races in maryland including here in the 6th congressional district. where republican representative roscoe bartlett seeking an 11th term in congress is facing an uphill battle against a field of republican candidates. and on the democratic side, the front runner there appears to be the newcomer political newcomer to the scene, john delaney. you see the seat is up for grabs because of recent redistricting that removes a large republican portion of the state and replaced it with the democratic stronghold of montgomery county. in the district of columbia, the races to watch there at large council candidate biddle trying to regain his seat from

vincent orange. the "washington post" also endorsed former teacher tom brown against ward 7's incumbent alexander. and in ward 8 long time politician and for many mayor for life berry faces a field of younger candidates. >> people just feel like they constantly hear about things that are inappropriate or illegal. it's an opportunity to make changes on the council. >> we can actually get down to real business which is improving and protecting the quality of life of ward 7 and d.c. residents. >> they will have the final word. >> they love council member berry but it's time for a change. they look at the clicks and the -- economics and the unemployment rate out here. >> reporter: another race to watch, senator ben cardin looking for is second term on the hill. coming up at 6:00 a look at the national race. back to you. >> thank you delia reporting live from potomac. president obama is defending the health care overhaul saying he's confident it's constitutional.

the president argued it would be unprecedented if the supreme court overturned the law. justices are reviewing whether congress has the authority to force people to buy health insurance which is a major part of the law. the supreme court is expected to announce its decision in june. metro is hoping a new public awareness campaign will prevent sexual harassment on the trains and the buses. metro employees including the general manager richard sarles handed out flyers yesterday. metro set up a website to report incidents to transit police. and the awareness posters will be going up in train stations and on buses very soon. later this morning leaders of faith and sievics organizations are going to announce their opposition to plans for a casino in prince george's county. they will gather in annapolis where state lawmakers are considering legislation to allow a sixth gambling state in the site and a vote is expected this week later. prince george's county executive baker has already endorsed the proposal to build

$1 billion casino at the complex in national harbor. at 5:34. it's time for another your money segment. jessica doyle a off today. some advocates are concerned about possible changes to the food inspection process, a person in a chicken suit joined other protestors monday outside the department of agriculture. the usda proposed a legislation to partly privatize the process. organizers say safety could be compromised since inspectors will be examining far fewer birds: they presented community clinics incorporated with grants totaling almost $2 million. the leaders including senator ben car bin and montgomery county -- cardin and montgomery county executive ike leggett vetted to present the award. >> we've made a lot of progress and what we're doing here today is to celebrate the potential for even more progress. and that certainly involves a village, it involves all of the partners here. and there could really not be a

more deserving organization than community clinic incorporated. >> the grants are expected to help provide access to health care for more than 25,000 maryland residents. it was the year ago this month where one big mistake led to a big expensive mess. the property managers of the georgetown waterfront failed to raise the flood walls and after heavy rains the dock side restaurants like tony and joe's were under 7 feet of water. >> it was a mistake. it wasn't malicious. and we've -- taken the high road. we didn't file any lawsuits. >> they had to lay off all but 20 of his employees and instead of making millions running restaurants he's been overseeing rebuilding process instead. since the inside of his restaurant were gutted by water. his goal? to reopen by mid-may in time for summer. we'll reveal the daily deals in a few minutes.

as well but they're not in the advisory. even northern prince george's county and anne arundel you may see an isolated patch of frost. you see why. even 34 here in crofton can produce frost with gaithersburg now down to 34. same with leesburg and sterling. it's 32 manassas. hay market at 36 while 40 for springfield and look at reagan national like a sore thumb. 45 degrees, a few more lights coming on every time we check here at the houston michael & son weather camera with 45 degrees, clear skies and a very light wind out of the north at 3 miles an hour. storm systems continue to hit the northwestern u.s. but the middle of the country in the southern rockies here, they're expecting 1, maybe 2 feet of snow at the higher elevations as some storms earlier were severe but not severe now through oklahoma. parts of the mississippi gulf coast seeing the rain but in the mid-atlantic and northeast beautiful out there. high pressure is in control and

montgomery county. it's the gaithersburg area if you're planning to head over the route 115. the accident blocks the southbound side here. first of all 270 is fine if you want to take that as the alternate route you will be fine on 270. heading southbound through gaithersburg. let's take a live look at this accident again money caster mill road is blocked off basically between route 124 and shady grove road. you can see the flares set up and police on the scene here. so maybe even you want to take mid county highway as your alternate route as well. i'll keep you posted on this situation. we'll take another look at the maps. this time all the way down in southern maryland. no problems to report coming out of brandy wine. accokeek on route 10 up into oxon hill. on the northbound side of i-95 this accident here at the franconia springfield area. coming up in my next report, another update on area roads 6:00. back to you guys. making news now just shy of 5:50, the head of the general
