allison for cbs news. >> dallas-fort worth airport has grounded flights because of the weather and more storms could be headed to the dallas area. anny hong is tracking those storms. she joins us now with the latest. what a day, anny. >> >> it's a dynamic system where we have warm conditions. here's a look at some of the video that was caught in the dallas county area just a couple hours ago. you can see the tornado hitting this area in dallas county. you can see the rotation. you can see the debris flying all over. even containers and a semitruck. those things can weigh thousands of pounds. they are tossed around like toys. at least one of two tornadoes were reported in this area. widespread damage. but the good news so far, no reports of any injuries just yet. all flights in the dallas, fort worth airport had been grounded and passengers and airport employees moved into shelters.

it's a line of storms right here, generally heading northeast. you can see it's going to impact parts of southern oklahoma. these are from the towns that it hit, not too long ago. hugo, also just about ten minutes ago. so, that threat is not over, we have severe thunderstorm warnings in effect right now and we could see some damaging wind gusts and large hail. in fact, we had softball sized hail reported earlier. we'll talk more about the severe threat for that area, also the weather for our area coming up later. back to you. >> thanks, anny. the megaconfusion continues tonight over the megamillions lottery. the question, is a woman who claims to be a winner carrying off an elaborate hoax or is the singer mother of seven in baltimore richer than most anyone's wildest dreams? scott broom is outside her home in baltimore. after last night's story, i didn't know what to believe. what happened today?

>> well, a lot of people don't know what to believe. the big development is that a very prom prominent attorney told me by phone today he has been in contact with this woman and there may be some kind of announcement tomorrow. but until then, the truth remains as elusive as ever. media scorned by a single mother of seven who says she won megamillions, but can't seem to get the story straight in a series of interviews whether she holds the ticket in an accent. >> you have it yourself? >> i'm not going to tell you. >> okay. >> are you sure you have the numbers? >> i have the numbers. i was so shocked. >> it's a megamess, especially at this mcdonald's outside baltimore. where coworkers tell the new york post they are in financial

limbo because they claimed they were in a pool with wilson and believe they may be winners, too. >> are they fighting with you over the ticket? wilson says she will not share because the winning ticket purchased at this nearby 7- eleven was not part of the pool. she says a friend bought it for her. but again today, wilson cleared nothing up and officials at the lottery head quarters said neither wilson or anyone else has stepped forward so they can verify nothing. on facebook today, viewers patience is weighing thin. stop interviewing her and giving her the attention her crazy tail self-wants, wrote one viewer. she has a heart of gold, but none wanted to appear on camera. >> is she the kind of person that would tell a story? >> i've never known her to tell a story. >> reporter: back live now here in baltimore, you can see the news crews from as far away as new york outside the house here camping out, waiting for the developments to happen.

redistricting has some voters confused about the ballot. what's going on, andrea? >> in fact, anita, in some montgomery county precincts today, there was confusion on the ballot. because of redistricting, as you mentioned, 65,000 voters had to move to new polling places. >> i guess it can be confusing, but we do what we have to do. >> makes me very angry when people complain about politics and they don't come and vote. >> they wouldn't miss the opportunity to vote. on this beautiful spring day, they didn't have much company. >> usually there's a line here in the morning, prework, but there wasn't any line. >> i think they should be ashamed of themselves. they should go out of their way to vote when they are asked to or when it's presented to them. >> redistricting affected 99,000 montgomery county

voters. including more than 65,000 who have to get accustomed to a new place to vote. >> a lot of people are unhappy with it, but like anything else, people need to get used to some of the changes. >> at this polling station, by mid afternoon, 150 voters had cast their ballots. in a precinct of 1100. now montgomery county election officials attribute that low turnout to three factors. number one, the fact that early voting has been available for the last six days. two, montgomery county public schools this week is spring break. so a will lot of voters are out of town. this is predominantly a republican primary in a strongly democratic county. back to you. >> all right andrea, thank you. in d.c., some of the most heated races are for seats on the city council. bruce johnson is live in northwest where some are saying just throw all the incumbents

out. right bruce? >> that's exactly what they are saying. we are outside precinct 52. normally about rush hour this time, that sidewalk will be packed. as you can see, there are very few people. 14 ,000 registered voters, but a fraction have cast ballots today. 698 people have cast ballots. we're talking electronic ballots and paper ballots. maybe 10, 15 people casting voteds. it's been this way throughout the city and they don't predict a lot more people are going to show up for the evening rush. let's go to the tape. >> in upper northwest, the turnout was light, that's according to the precinct captain. the voter who's did show up are looking to make major changes. >> i really disillusioned with the entire council. the atmosphere is one of corruption. >> i want change. i want change. i want change in the personalities. i mean, to put it bluntly, i'd

like to throw them all out. >> across the river in southeast at hennly elementary school, marion barry is expected to win easily despite the light turnout. but vincent orange could have problems holding off challengers. >> i may be voting for some people to stay in, but it's time for a change. >> so you voted for -- >> some less want to come in. >> the other incumbent would be alexander, she's a ward 7 representative. she's expected to win as is vincent orange and marion barry. in large part with the fact that they are running against the fields. they have the name recognition, they have the cash. they have the machine to get people to the polls. don't be surprised if there isn't one upset tonight. back to you. >> we'll see who gets the vote tonight. voters in maryland and d.c.

anita. >> president obama is ripping the recently revealed house budget plan. speaking at an associated press luncheon, the president called the proposed cut thinly veiled social darwinism. the president claims the proposal is an attempt to impose a radical vision on our nation. >> you can be sure that with cuts this deep, there is no secret plan or formula that will be able to protect the investments we need to help our economy grow. >> representative paul ryan of wisconsin introduced the budget plan on march 20. he responded to today's speech by the president by a statement. quote, by others lead by offering real solutions, he has chosen to distort the truth. social media sites have been buzzing all day. maybe that's what is going to help them win. this drawing is what got people

turns out the suspect in that school shooting yesterday out at the university in oakland has close ties to right around here in northern virginia. juan is accused of shooting and killing seven people and today as police continue to investigate the motive. kristin fisher spent the day in northern virginia searching for his ties to our area. what did you find, kristen? >> we found that he used to live in springfield. he was deep in debt.

he was also dealing with the death of his brother who was killed in a car accident in virginia almost exactly one year ago today. but still, you know, he was dealing with a lot, no doubt, but nothing from what we found indicates he could be in capable of what he's accused of doing yesterday. >> i just hear and asking for help. again and again. >> this woman heard one of the victims beg for her life. police say the shooter had been a nursing student there, but he was expelled two months ago. he was upset the students teased him about his poor english. >> he was having behavioral problems and asked him not to leave. >> most of his family lives in oakland, but his brother still lives in fairfax county. so we came out to this apartment complex to try to talk to juan's brother. when we found him, he was very

emotional, very distraught. he refused to talk on camera, but he did say he was deeply ashamed about what had happened and very sorry for all the victim's families. but police say juan has shown little remorse for his actions. he is cooperating with investigators, even provided details about how he committed the killings. now police are trying to gather all the evidence against him. they spent tuesday searching waterways in oakland looking for the gun used in the shooting. so far, they found nothing. as for the seven victims, there's a me memorial service planned. >> you have to be sad for the brother. >> you could just tell he was so emotionally distraught by what his brother is accused of doing. >> kristen, thank you. back to you in the studio. >> former vice president, dick

cheney, is out of the hospital tonight, ten days after getting a new hooter. cheney is 71 years old. he had the transplant surgery at anova fairfax. he waited two years to get this transplant with the help of an implanted heart assist device. cheney has a long history of cardiovascular disease. >> one of the key figures in the phone hacking scandal is stepping down. james murdoch is leaving his post as chair of sky news. murdoch is expected to remain a member of the sky news board of directors. word of the resignation comes at a time of intensifying scrutiny at the center of the scandal. james is the son of media mogul, rupert murdoch. >> if the weather isn't as balmy as you'd like it to be, take a look at this. mother nature jumped 4 inches

going through. also some tornadoes where that amazing video came out of the trucks being tossed around like toys. now in our area, we aren't talking about any severe weather. maybe a few showers overnight tomorrow, but overall, pretty good looking forecast. right now, temperatures are 66 in gaithersburg. 72 manassas. fredericksburg, mid 70s. culpeper lower 70s. does feel nice out there. it will be warmer tomorrow, then we cool back down. tonight, not as cold, warmer for your wednesday. some showers possible tomorrow. i'd say south of town, we'll show you that in the future cast. thursday and friday, turning out to be cooler. here is that future cast. high pressure in control, but we have clouds rolling in late tonight and for tomorrow morning. no problems for tomorrow morning commute. then, the afternoon, you can see showers around d.c., but again, points south of d.c. and

an 80-year-old woman with no flight experience is being hailed a hero tonight in wisconsin. she was able to successfully land a twin engine plane and save her own life after her husband had a medical emergency in the cockpit. it happened over stergen bay.

her husband was at the controls when he lost consciousness. one of the engines lost its power. authorities called in a different pilot to help her land that plane. >> i'm very proud of her for doing what she did. a very difficult situation with her husband unconscious next to her. took a lot for her to collect her thoughts and get that thing landed. >> no kidding, it was a bumpy landing, but the woman suffered minor injuries. sad news, her husband died later at the hospital. firefighters in new jersey came to the rescue of 15 puppies trapped in the basement of a burning house. it happened in hopewell township. firefighters used canine oxygen masks to save those puppies. they set up a makeshift animal hospital. one dog that was not with the others died of smoke inhalation. the two people inside got out safely. >> coming up on 9news, protesters hit the streets over

major college sports. ironic because he made his fortune marketing big money sneaker deals to those very universities. >> it took me a while to understand that the only people that were being used here were the individual players. >> his message caught the ear of d.c. based human rights attorney who investigated. >> they are selling the athletes work. their name, their image, and their likeness taking all of that money and keeping it themselves. >> but what about that free college education? >> a division one men's basketball and football, the highest producing revenue sports for the ncaa. has the lowest graduation rates in the classes with the least career oriented curriculum. >> enlisting former ucla baller as a lead plaintiff, he filed a federal lawsuit arguing the players deserve a percentage of whatever money their sport brings in, including jersey sales and video games and former greats

competitiveness of the college sport. >> but wake up, that glitter rubbed off a long time ago. >> you are trying to pull back the curtain on him? >> yes. >> and that lawsuit goes to trial in the summer of next year. i did ask what he would consider a victory in the case and he said at the heart of this, he wants a big change in the power relationship between the college athletes and the ncaa. right now, the students have no voice. lesli. >> thanks, derek. the man police call the east coast rapist. aaron thomas faces charges of rape and abduction stemming from an attack on halloween back in 2009. the 40-year-old suspect lived in woodbridge at one point, he was arrested in connecticut last year. police suspect thomas committed a spring of rapes up and down the east coast starting in the mid 1990s. >> a woman in capital heights, maryland, made a horrifying  discovery. she found the bodies of her

aunt and uncle inside her home. police are calling this case a murder suicide. >> it is believed that the male shot the female before shooting himself. this investigation is on going. police have not released the victim's names as of yet. >> let's take a look at the scene. bomb threats prompted students to be evacuated. investigators say a note was fount at kent county middle school and threatened the placement of bombs at all of the school buildings. bomb sniffing dogs were called in and nothing was found. >> keep college affordable. that is the message from the obama administration. vice president joe biden spoke about the importance of higher education at a norfolk, virginia, high school a bit earlier today. there, he stressed the potential earning power for folks who complete that four year degree. >> 81 graduating with a graduate degree from a four

caught on tape, amazing pictures of two trucks that came crashing down a snowy mountain in norway. both drivers survived with only broken bones. a tow truck had come to the rescue of a truck that scot got stuck on the ice. the truck crashed down the mountainside taking the tow

tonight's health alert, research puts routine breast cancer screening under scrutiny again. we have been hearing this a lot. the study found between 15 and 20% of breast cancer spotted by regular mammograms would not have caused problems during a woman's lifetime. but these tumors were being treated anyway, often with surgery or chemotherapy. >> researchers estimate for every 2500 women offered screening, one death from breast cancer will be treated for the disease when it is not essentially necessary. finding a job in a tough economy is tough for everybody, but imagine the challenge for adults with autism. it can seem insurmountable. alexis looks at one organization with the goal of

see is an active scene as investigators look for the shooter. we'll continue to monitor this situation and bring you updates as they come in. >> fairfax county ranks right on top. all that on top of a report. now the study finds northern virginia tends to be healthier than the southern part of the state. in addition to fairfax, arlington, and loudoun, they rank near the top. petersburg, virginia, is at the bottom. the rate was more than double the state average. in maryland, it is howard county on top. howard is the healthiest county in maryland followed by montgomery, queen ann's, frederick. baltimore city ranks the absolute worst. its residents had three times the number of premature deaths. >> and then comes the news that today is not a day to feel guilty. it's a day to indulge for free. because ben and jerry's has its free cone day. they have been giving away free

a pennsylvania meat company owned by basketball hall of famer, irvin magic johnson and the los angeles private equity firm has filed for bankruptcy. afa foods claims negative media coverage of the pink slime meat additives caused some changes. the filler is made from beef trimmings and treated with ammonia before added to ground beef. the u.s. department of agriculture says the ingredient is safe to eat. rise in gas prices pushed the sale of more fuel efficient cars. gm sold 100,000 fuel economy cars in the u.s. it's a first for the detroit auto maker. the company reports demand all vehicles to get 30 miles per gallon. chrysler had a strong sales year ahead of a handful of their fuel efficient vehicles. lower fares may be taking off at an air fare near you. delta airlines is offering a
