1:38 am
vote. >> and in wisconsin, romney had, if we can take a look at that, 43% of the vote. there were 95 delegates to the republican national convention up today. 40 of them in wisconsin alone. >> and thank you to wisconsin, maryland and washington dc. [ cheers and applause ] >> we won them all. [ cheers and applause ] >> tonight i'm asking the good people of pennsylvania, new york, rhode island, delaware and connecticut to join me, join me in the next step towards the destination of december 6th. >> we've now reached the point where it's half time. half the delegates in the process have been selected. and who is ready to charge out of the locker room in pennsylvania for a strong second half? . [ cheers and applause ] >> the next big round of primaries, three weeks away from today. well, tonight's victory certainly has to solidify
1:39 am
romney's quest to president obama santorum says half time. >> at some point. it's not up to mitt romney to tell him what to do. but at some point senator santorum has to ask himself is it all worth it? i think sooner or later he'll come to the answer which is, quite frankly, no. >> all right. thank you, governor. we'll chat further on later in the newscast. turning now to the race in maryland's sixth district which by far has been the most competetive and watched race of the night in that state. now, here are the results. the incumbent is ahead for the republican nomination. he has 45% of the vote there. bartlett is running for his 11th term. he's held the seat since 1992. if bartlett wins, he will likely face off against john delaney. delaney is ahead with 55% of the
1:40 am
vote. andrea is there. >> reporter: well, derek, i think the scene in this room says it all. there is a crowd that is very excited about the primary victory of montgomery county businessman john delaney. he spoke to the crowd a short time ago. >> we've spoke from our heart. we told voters the truth. and guess what, the voters in the sixth district of maryland got it. and they're behind us. and they'll make us take the seat back for democrats. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: now, john delaney put more than a million dollars of his own money into winning this race. and he picked up some key endorsements along the way. former president bill clinton. former montgomery county executive doug duncan. congresswomancounty council woman valerie
1:41 am
urban are among the first. now, he bills himself as a political outsider. however, he has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for democratic candidates. this is, however, his first drawn for elected office. delaney is a self-made multi-millionaire. he has founded two successful commercial finance companies, one of which employs more than a thousand people. if he beats roscoe bartlett in the general election, he says his top priorities will be creating jobs and building the economy. i imagine it is quite a different scene tonight at the campaign headquarters of rob garagiola. that's where gary joins us live from germantown. >> reporter: it is a different scene. far more quiet. supporters couldn't believe they offered him a loss.
1:42 am
he is, after all, the senate majority leader. but the crowd began to trickle out. >> i love you. >> reporter: at 10:25, he worked the small crowd of supporters offering thanks and conceded the election. >> a few minutes ago i tried calling john delaney. i left him a voicemail. maybe i'll talk to him later this evening to congratulate him. >> reporter: outspent by a millionaire 4-1, he counted on labor support, party support and organization to get him through. a list of teams and assignments for election day. an inexpensive social media with advice to use facebook and twitter to get out the word. >> it wasn't enough. >> unfortunately john delaney had a lot of people on the ground. he had a lot of money that he was able to put into the campaign. he ran a great campaign. >> reporter: not an end to his political career. >> the journey is not done. there is still a lot to be done. >> reporter: as we said, he still is the senate majority
1:43 am
leader, so it's back to annapolis. this was the first campaign. it was a disappointing loss. but in the traditions of many losing campaigns prior to this one, we heard one volunteer say just a moment ago let's go get drunk. anita. >> okay. gary, thank you for that. democrats are hoping they can turn that congressional seat to roscoe bartlett. they added a big swap into montgomery county in the mix in hopes of diluting the republican vote. bruce leshan is trying to figure out who is more fired up for november. bruce. >> reporter: yes, anita. that is the big question. are the democrats in montgomery county fired up enough to counter the republican enthusiasm out here in western maryland, the western marylands who have been sending roscoe bartlett to congress for decades turn out over all dismal in this primarily. but i want you to look at how many more republicans have voted
1:44 am
so far. if you add up all of of the votes for all of the republican candidates there were a bunch of them. and assume all of the voters are going to turn out in november. the gop is going to win this thing big. 28,490 republicans have been counted and voted so far. the democrats 20,207. that conventional wisdom has it that republicans are more consistent primary voters. but, of course, president obama is going to be on the ballot in november. both parties likely to fight here very hard in maryland sixth congressional district. so maybe we're right back where we started on this. who the heck knows. it is likely to be very close. anita. >> all right, bruce. we'lling back to you later in the news -- we'll be back to you later in the newscast. turning now to the district of columbia, right now it is an extremely tight race for the dc
1:45 am
city council. biddle with 42% of the vote. orange with 39% of the vote. this is with 78% of the precincts voting. in ward 4, we have bowser with 50% over the vote over renee bowser with 15%. if she wins, she could be facing off against republican ron moten in november. he has 62% of the vote. and for ward 8, marion barry with a re sounding 73% of the vote. he, of course, is the incumbent. our bruce johnson live at barry's headquarter. bruce, there was a lot of talk of ousting some of the old, in with the new. what are your thoughts? >> reporter: well, only a 7% turnout against registered democrats in the city. that could be a record low. and if it closes, that becomes
1:46 am
less than 1%. we're looking for a recount. barry wins out here despite all of the contrary reports and he winds by a land slide. this is his last campaign says his associates. >> barry, barry. >> reporter: the 75-year-old former mayor had captured about 55% of the vote following the early morning return. marion barry was ready to say i told you so to those who tell us he was vulnerable. >> all the haters banded together. all of the negative people banded together. all of them said we're tired of marion barry banded together. and we kicked their behinds. >> reporter: a majority of voters stayed away. shepherd elementary school where 14,000 people are registered, most of them democrats, only a thousand people or so turned out to vote. throughout the district, those who did show up said they want changes on the dc council. >> i don't think anyone is happy with the status quo.
1:47 am
>> i would like to throw them all out. >> reporter: vincent orange fighting for his political life say voters want a reformed council. >> the powers that be really want to deal with ethics and they should join me and pushing and promoting my bill to ban corporate contributions and outside employment by council members that work for institutes that are doing business with the city. >> hey, steve, how are you doing? >> reporter: in a near dead heat voters send a message today. >> i think a lot of people are just -- just want to believe they can have the leaders that aren't going to constantly be caught up in this kind of mess and these sort of embarrassing situations. >> reporter: okay. just a couple of things . keep in mind he had been appointed to that at large seat on the council that was vacated. vincent orange then defeated him in the first at large race. it looks like he now gets even. again, if it's less than 1%, it will be a recount. we'll go back to marion barry and make this quick. this will be his third term if
1:48 am
he goes on and wins the general election as he's expected to do. 16 years of mayor of the district of columbia and four years before that on the school board. nobody else has served as long. nobody else is as well known in the city. he's telling close associates this is his last campaign. quite frankly, anita and derek, i'll believe it when i see it. [ laughing ] >> you have been covering it long enough to know. and as you said, some pretty low numbers as far as voter turnout. >> reporter: yes. very low. and obviously cor , these numbers will be big. but even for a non-presidential primary with nobody running for mayor, these numbers are very low. maybe some voters are are turned off by all of this. a number of you are going to be doing exit polls. they're going to be talking to voters in days to come. it may be that voters are just turned off by all of the negative publicity. and people are waiting the outcome of the investigations.
1:49 am
both the major and councilman are targets. and the u.s. attorney knows a lot of what goes on in the days ahead. >> we know you'll keep us on top of it, bruce. thank you. moving on tonight, families all across the state of texas now just waiting and hoping for the storms to pass after tornadoes ripped across the lone star state leaving behind massive destruction. anny. >> we're tracking those storms. plus in our area not as cold. maybe a light jacket. here is your wednesday wakeup weather. clouds on the increase. temperatures bottoming out low to mid 50s. chances of showers and some thunderstorms. your full forecast coming up. plus a confusion in the megamillion dollar jackpot can clear up after tomorrow. we'll explain

cardin winning the nomination. 72% of the vote. he is running for his second term in the u.s. senate. and in november, he will face off against republican daniel bongino. he is a small business owner. well, no big surprises. that could well be the headline tonight in the gop race for the white house because as expected mitt romney has been declared the winner in dc, maryland and wisconsin. and most everybody thinks the thing is just about over. that is for the other three guys running against romney. bob urlich who is the campaign chair. welcome back. how bad is it for romney when the others refuse to say dion this? >> it costs money is the burn right here. you know this. we've had a couple dozen primaries, caucuses, all of the
1:53 am
debates, all of the stump campaigning. it makes you better. >> yes. up to a point. but i think it might be getting past the point for marginal return. >> that's not mitt romney's call. i think it looks weak if mitt -- he's not done this, by the way, and he won't do this. it looks weak when you have to say you have to get out of the race. on the other side, the map just at some point doesn't work anymore, particularly if santorum does not win pennsylvania. >> now, the math doesn't work for newt gingrich for some time but he stays in. >> he's trying to make a point. >> your candidate has really taken a big hit among female voters. and the fact if the election were mythically held tomorrow, he would lose to barack obama to a great extent because of the gender gap. how does he fix that? >> the election is not tomorrow. >> no, it is not. >> most of this has to do with santorum, as you know. when the issue becomes contraception, not abortion, not stem cell research, but contraception, and rick santorum sort of led himself into that
1:54 am
and the democrats smartly by the way sort of cast that blanket of all of the republican casts, including mitt romney, it's hard. there is no doubt about it. at some point when preseason is over, mitt romney will be the candidate. the ideas will be hit. the positions will be hit. the voting record will be hit. and i think women voters will be very competetive. >> as you said, he's trying to pivot already and look at the general election. he's talking a lot more about president obama. >> sure. >> but that's the problem a lot of folks say. he's talking about president obama rather than laying out a vision for his change. >> the president has been talking about him for months. when they figured out he was going to be the candidate. let me tell you, this is going to be ugly. it's divisive. it's going to be close. it's going to be emotional. but what i like about this race is contrast. that's what you want in an election. keystone pipeline. all energy policy. deficit. spending. taxes. tort report. all of the major issues of the

day, that's what the american people deserve. >> it's going to be quite a war. >> you got that right. >> thank you so much. we appreciate your time. >> good to see you, my friend. >> anita. thank you. as we've been telling you tonight, one of the closest races of the night is for the at large member of the dc council. bruce leshan has been crunching the numbers all night long. >> reporter: i want you to take a look at the geographic race between incumbent vincent orange and seco bittle. right now bittle is ahead two and a half points. he is ahead in every ward except for 4, 5, 7 and 8. those wards that are down kind of in this area down across into the anacostia down in these areas. this is a rematch for these two. and orange beat bittle badly in northeast and in anacostia last year. the pun is expected that he
1:56 am
would win the neighborhoods this time, and he is winning. but i'll tell you what, in some northwest wards actually, the margin for biddle is way, way apart. he is ahead by two and in some cases by three times more votes than for orange. at last check, again, district wide, they were separated by about two and a half points. those questions about orange's campaign funding, the money orders, the cashier's checks, all of that may well have had an impact on him. anita. >> all right, bruce. thanks for taking a look at it for us. and if you would like to look at more election results yourself, go to wusa9.com. it is right there on the top of our home page. we're going to take a look at other news tonight. a man linked to rapes up and down the east coast has been indicted in prince william county and his trial now set for the summer. today a grand jury indicted aaron thomas on charges of raping two teenage girls who were trick-or-treating back on halloween 2009.
1:57 am
the trial is set for july 31st. thomas was arrested last year in connecticut and faces rape charges there. connecticut agreed to extradite him to virginia to face charges here first. we have learned that the suspect in yesterday's shooting spree in california does have some ties to northern virginia. 43-year-old juan go once lived in springfield. one of his brothers died in a car accident in virginia about a year ago. and court records show that he had no criminal history here. but in oakland, he is now accused of killing seven people and wounding three others at a university. police say he was kicked out of that school a few weeks ago. and tomorrow the megamass over the megamillions lottery could become a little less messy. the lawyer says he has been in contact with the woman and there may be some sort of announcement tomorrow. wilson is the baltimore woman who says she has one of the three winning tickets from last friday's megamillions drawing and therefore a share of the jackpot $656 million. but wilson's co-workers at a
1:58 am
mcdonald's up around baltimore are on record saying that winning ticket is part of a pool of ticket that a group bought. but she said that's not true. so far no one has actually stepped forward winning the ticket. the tornadoes, at least a dozen and the damage widespread. but the casualties amazingly light. at least the numbers reported thus far. that's the latest word on tornadoes that went through the dallas area today. take a look at this video vincent tang shot from his rooftop while one of the tornadoes played a game of chicken in his neighborhood. >> oh, my gosh. right on the top of my house. oh, my god. oh, my god. oh, my god. please, please, please. avoid my house. please. >> well, that tornado did avoid his house. countless others not so fortunate. the storms ripped through hundreds of homes and businesses. >> whoa. >> amazing video coming out of
1:59 am
there. and some of that severe threat still tonight. it's now past dallas. it's now just east of dallas. so we're still looking at a chance for severe weather through tonight and also tomorrow as well on the gulf state. we're talking about in our area some much calmer weather. but some of the storms in texas really got things going today. here is a look at the satellite radar picture to show you where the storms are. you can still see a pretty good storm system dropping in lots of rain, some damaging wind gusts and some hail. and if you go in closer, you can see it's just basically east of dallas, closer to shreveeveport where you see the yellow and red. -- shreveport where you see the yellow and red. this is dallas and south of dallas where the big tornado was reported that caused a lot of damage confirming a large and dangerous tornado 1:00 local time in the landcast area.
2:00 am
that is in dallas county. so it's been a very stormy day for those folks there. now, our area, we're looking at clear skies right now. 60 degrees. winds are calm. it actually feels pretty nice outside. high pressure moving off the coast. we've got some clouds, though, moving in by tomorrow morning. we should see some cloudy conditions. but it will be a cool and nice start for your wednesday morning. not as cold compared to this morning. afternoon showers and storms are possible. better chance will be south of town. once that front goes on through, we'll see some cooler air for thursday and friday. but it still looks pretty good. our 9 future cast showing us for basically increasing clouds tomorrow and then a chance for some showers and storms south of town in the afternoon. and some places may not even see anything. maybe a pretty nice day. temperatures back into the 70s. so overnight as you're sleeping, what can you expect? partly to mostly cloudy. not as cold. a slight chance for a shower. lows 50-55 degrees and the winds will be light.
2:01 am
now, tomorrow morning grab a light jacket. it will be mostly cloudy and just a cool start. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. but for the afternoon, partly sunny, a little warmer. a few showers possible south of town. highs near 75-degree. so we should be in the low 60s. we'll be well above that. 74 in downtown. 75 in college park. 73 in gaithersburg. here is a look at your next seven days. cooler for thursday and friday. lower 60s. we're going into the holiday weekend for easter. saturday will warm things up into the mid 60s and on sunday lower 70s. it looks pretty nice. i have a little shower raindrop there for sunday, but that's not until sunday night, maybe into early monday morning. so only a chance for showers. but it looks really good for all of the easter egg hunts on sunday. >> nice stretch. >> yes. coming up next, the nats played the red sox at the park today but the players were not the big stars. kristen berset has a story on america's heros
