planner. jackets this morning. 40s and 50s. a cowell of you had some raindrops overnight but the showers have dissipated. it's 53 now at reagan national. 68 by noon. a mix of sun and clouds. this afternoon we'll have clouds, some sunshine but a threat for a shower or storm south of washington the way it looks now, places like fredricksburg, culpeper and south of that. 5:00 p.m. temperature 74 so we're going well in the 70s. want you to watch coming out of pennsylvania the last few hours. we had just a little line of showers. that fell apart. now some showers across parts of west virginia and i think -- there's one lone shower south of york crossing i-83. frederick down to 45. manassas 46. winchester still 54 at this hour along with andrews. la plata 48. annapolis is 53 along with fredricksburg. our highs today low 70s along the bay and up in frederick. mid-70s here in town. and maybe, just maybe toward 80 out toward culpeper and orange. let's go to monika santami. 5:00 a.m. volume starting to build yet or still looking good?

just a bit. just a couple of slow spots because of some incidents. that's the only reason. otherwise generally speaking volume is light. if you're planning to head on the outbound side of route 50, there was an accident right at route 202 with crews on the scene. no problems on the bw parkway. that's looking fine. just keep that in mind. inbound side of route 50 shouldn't be affected. down south of the wilson bridge looking great both loops of the beltway between oxon hill and alexandria. we'll go over to virginia now on the maps. on the northbound side of i-95 you're looking fine. lorton, newington and springfield there had been an accident southbound on route 95 at route 123 so be aware of that causing an early merge. we'll take you to a live picture northbound i-95 in springfield looks great. we'll wind a live look northbound 395 here at duke street. just a few people out and about this morning. coming up in my next report, we'll go into maryland at 5:09. >> thank you, monika. campaign 2012 mitt romney goes 3 for 3 in tuesday's

primaries. >> he avoided an upset in wisconsin and easily won the local primaries in d.c. and maryland. in maryland romney got 49% of the vote to rick santorum's 29%. santorum wasn't on the ballot in d.c. romney won the city's primary with 68% of the vote. ron paul was in second with 12%. >> in maryland democrats jumped at the chance to take on incumbent district 6 congressman roscoe bartlet. that's because the with dwrawn district includes a -- the redrawn district includes parts of montgomery county. >> while most incumbents came away with primary victories, one is in hot water. >> d.c. at large council member vincent orange. at last check orange holds a slim lead to his closest challenger sekou biddle t. is by 1.02%. if that lead drops to 1% or less, there will be an

automatic recount. 9news now reporter delia goncalves is live at d.c.'s board of elections with more. it couldn't get any closer, delia. >> reporter: i know, an extremely tight race. the incumbents sailed through reelection but a tight race with the councilman at large contest. so folks here at the board of elections inside judiciary square will be very busy later this morning counting thousands of absentee and provisional ballots helping to find an answer to this looming question who won that race. but the final result will still be a couple of weeks away. you can blame some of this tight race on low voter turnout in the district. for instance, in one precinct where about 14,000 democrats are registered, we're told only 1,000 people voted and cast their ballots yesterday. sekou biddle says those who voted want change from the scandal and corruption that scared the council, including

the incumbent vincent orange who recently had to explain campaign contributions from d.c. businessman jeff thompson whose home was recently raided by the feds. >> the powers of being that want to deal with ethics should join me in pushing my bill to ban corporate contributions. >> i think a lot of people are just -- just want to believe they can have the leaders that aren't going to constantly be caught up in this kind of mess and these embarrassing situations. >> reporter: incumbent council members like long-time politician marion barry easily won reelection. the 75-year-old was facing a field of young challengers but maintained his polarity in ward 8. coming up at 5:30, we'll head over to maryland and take a look at the hotly contested sixth congressional district race there. back to you, andrea. >> we'll look forward to that, delia goncalves live in the district.

in other news, a man linked to rapes up and down the east coast is set to go on trial in prince william county this summer. a grand jury indicted aaron thomas on charges of raping two teenage girls who were trick or treating on halloween 2009. thomas was arrested last year in connecticut where he also faces rape charges but connecticut agreed to let virginia try him first. the trial is set for july 31. former vice president dick cheney is out of the hospital after his heart transplant. the 71-yard was release -- 71- year-old was released inova fairfax ten days after getting a new heart. he waited 20 months to get a donor heart. he's had five heart attacks starting at age 37. his most recent one was in 2010. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> headline time. jessica doyle is here. good morning. >> good morning to both of you. wall street is going to try to claw back from the brink. the biggest job market worries

we saw yesterday hurt the market but we're seeing more red arrows in global trading. asian and european stocks are lower. the federal reserve touched things off with signaling a report that hiring might be slowing down if the economy doesn't pick up steam. the news causes a three-day winning streak. 13,199 is where the dow stands. the s&p 500 down by about 5 and a half. here is some good news for that summer vacation planning. delta airlines is testing a new low fare ticket option. the air carrier's basic economy seats would be about 12 to $20 cheaper than the regular economy seats. the catch is they are not refundable and they cannot be changed or canceled after the tickets are purchased. passengers won't even be allowed to pick a seat but will be able to earn frequent flyer miles. how much do you think apple stock is worth? it closed at just about $629 a

share. that's roughly double this time last year and two analysts are now saying the sky's the limit. they're calling for $1,000 a year in a year or two for apple. the growth could be propelled by emerging markets and new products that could include a revolutionary tv set. some are skeptical but apple sold more ipads in 2011 than babies were born in the u.s. >> that's a cool statistic. >> it gives you an idea of how culture is shifting to a certain extent. >> and you don't have to any any diapers on an ipad. >> what do you have for us in the next half-hour? >> the big menu change at burger king being rolled out. that's not the only big change the chain has up its sleeve. also coming up, police near richmond are investigating a crash between an ice cream truck and a school bus. >> plus so far no reports of any deaths after a string of very powerful tornadoes swept across texas. >> and ahead in sports, the

upper 60s by noon. highs around 75. could be an afternoon shower or storm but the better chance of that will be south of d.c. i'll have your seven-day forecast coming up in about five minutes. right now monika with time saver traffic. coming in from baltimore on 95, everything is fine down to the beltway. no problems on the beltway through silver spring. i'll show you that coming up in my next report at 5:17. >> thank you, monika. making news now at 5:10, police in california are severing for the gun used in a -- searching for the gun used in a mass shooting at a college. one goh killed seven people and wounded three more. he had recently been kicked out of the oikos university for behavioral problems. he once lived in springfield, virginia but has no criminal record here. check out this video of monster tornadoes in and around dallas yesterday. the national weather service believes there were as many as 12 twisters in all. no deaths reported. a couple of people did have some serious injuries, though. more than a hundred commercial planes were damaged by hail. a school bus collided with

an ice cream truck just outside of richmond, virginia. more than a dozen people were injured, including seven students from midlothian high school. one adult was critically injured by is expected to recover. did she really win a portion of that megamillions jackpot? we may find out more about that baltimore mother soon. it's possible she could be a part of it. we'll have more on what she plans to do today at 5:33. a look at the new redskins players uniforms they'll wear for the 2012 season. at 5:15, howard has a temperature drop in the seven- day forecast. we'll be right back.

we get deeper into the season. we've been kind of dry. if we had some rain, these numbers would probably be worse as well. your bus stop forecast, it's kind of cool. we have 40s and some 50s. skies are partly to mostly cloudy. a couple of showers overnight have dissipated. as we look at day planner, expecting a mix of sun and clouds today. upper 60s by noon. we'll warm nicely. northwesterly winds at 10 to 11 miles an hour. by 6:00 73 with a high of about 75 degrees. notice these showers we had. there they were earlier. last couple of hours we're looking at the doppler. this shower passing south of harrisburg to maybe extreme northeastern maryland, that's it. a quiet morning and a cool morning as we were talking about. mid-40sstering up to lovettsville at 45. haymarket at 49 degrees along with alexandria. arlington 52. up to the east we've got 46 for laurel. bwi47. andrew still at 54 degrees right now.

so not too bad out there. and there's the flag blowing a little bit outside the capitol dome where we've got good visibility on our michael & son weather camera. only a southwest wind at 3 miles an hour at the surface at reagan national. the dew points creeping up now up to 43. humidity 69%. want to show you national temperatures because you see the colder air coming down the rockies. the warmer stuff coming up in the mississippi and tennessee valleys there. the deep south with 60s. there's a storm system spinning around. still snowing across parts of colorado. the severe weather, that was in dallas yesterday. thankfully not deadly tornadoes. the line of severe storms has moved toward east texas and louisiana this morning. not severe at the home but we'll have to watch it for later today. around here other than the stray shower or two overnight, our future cast indicating other than some clouds midday, some afternoon showers could be popping well off to our south. so not too much of a concern for rain and we're running about 3, 3 and a half inches

in easton and annapolis and frederick and leesburg. maybe 72347 manassas. -- maybe 77 in man fan sas. it's 5 -- manassas. it's 5:28. monika, roads, weather, you're doing it all now. i guess i am. dow have some bad news for the roads on the beltway over in prince george's county where we're talking about an accident right here on the outer loop before central avenue. right lane is currently blocked. police are on the scene. you want to be aware of it if you're planning to head northbound on the beltway on the east side in prince george's county. we'll keep you posted on that. route 50 to bw parkway are fine inside the beltway. we'll take a live look a little further north over into the college park area or actually at pennsylvania avenue south of that. if you're planning to head over here, again be aware of that accident along the right side of the road. we'll look again at the maps this time all the way out to 66 where there are no problems out of manassas and centreville. we'll take a live look just west of centreville at compton road as you head inbound.

council member -- at large council member vincent orange. at least check he leads his closest challenger sekou biddle by 1.2%. d.c.'s board of elections hat not yet counted absentee or provisional ballots. the new martin luther king memorial on the national mall this time last year was not open yet. today will be the first time a ceremony marking the anniversary of the assassination is happening since the monument opened. the civil rights leader was shot and killed april 4, 1968. the public is invited to a candlelight vigil and wreect laying ceremony starting at 6:30 tonight. the megamillions lottery drama may calm itself today. a prominent lawyer says he's been in contact with mirlande wilson and may make an announcement later today. wilson says she has one of the three winning tickets from last

year's $656 million jackpot. wilson's co-workers at a mcdonald's are on record saying that winning ticket is part of a pool of winning tickets wilson purchased. wilson disputes that claim. so far no one has actually stepped forward holding a winning ticket. >> the story changes yet again. 5:34. time for another look at your money. >> jessica doyle is back with big sales for the big three automakers. >> that's right. if you just recently bought a car, you were part of this big trend. what we're talking about here, the auto industry seeing its best monthly sales in nearly five years. sales are being spurred by stronger demand for smaller cars as gas prices spike. chrysler led the pack 34% jump in sales. sales for g.m. rose 12%, ford up by 5%. smaller cars like the ford focus, the nissan versa, fiat 500 flew off dealer lots last month but larger vehicles also sold well. in our efforts to help you get hired we have a job fair to tell you about.

it's being held at the activity center at 506 south frederick avenue in gaithersburg. the fair takes place between 10:00 and 2:00 today. companies that will attend will include kinder care, ciezer perm then -- kaiser permanente and lowe's. burger king is returning to the stock market. it says it will list its stock on the new york stock exchange. it was taken private in 2010 by investment firm s.g. capital. on monday the company launched ten food items and that was its biggest menu expansion ever. a lot of people are saying it looks a lot like mcdonald's nowadays. >> they won't to get back to at least number two. >> locale -- low cal options. an april fool's prank points out just how many people are too obsessed with their phones to pay attention to

country like we had. incredible stuff. if you haven't seen it, stick around. here's a look at our rainfall for the year because want to talk about this. it's getting dry. hearing from weather watchers and other folks out there. we could use a little rain. when you look at the numbers, the actual rainfall in green but the deficits in white. we're running more than three and a half inches below average since january 1 here in washington. about the same in baltimore. two and a half below average in martinsburg with over 6 inches. we should be looking at 9 and 10:00-inch totals, not 5 and 6:00-inch total -- 5 and 6-inch totals. the drier it is, the harder it is to heat up. here's the bus stop forecast. partly cloudy conditions out there with temps in the 40s to 50s. low 50s, even mid-50s in one or two spots. sunrise at 6:47. we'll have the sunshine mixing with clouds today, not as

street bridge. we'll keep you posted on that situation in dumfries once again at 6:00. back to you. today the national weather service will confirm just how many tornadoes hit texas yesterday. >> a handful of people are injured, but despite the heavy damage that you'll see in a moment, no reports of any deaths. karen brown has more now from dallas. >> reporter: sandy cooper is trying to salvage memories. >> i'm gathering pictures that i have found. >> reporter: photos are scattered throughout the debris in arlington, texas. >> i'm gathering the memories of the people that may not be able to find them. >> reporter: the national weather service estimates as many as a dozen tornadoes tore through the dallas area tuesday. >> holy mollie. >> reporter: the powerful storms tossed big rigs around like toys, flattened trucks and destroyed homes and businesses. >> i will never forget that. >> reporter: 85-year-old robert simmons' grandson had to be wheeled out of their home on a

stretcher. he was injured protecting him. >> he helped me get in the bathtub and put some pillows on him. by the time he got the pillows on me, i heard this cracking. sounded like a freight train. >> reporter: here in forney, house after house was damaged. the roof ofle elementary school was torn off with the children inside. one mom had just gone in to pick up her child when her car was tossed hundreds of feet. no one was injured. >> i'm just glad to be here. >> reporter: sherry's home was destroyed. she was baby-sitting three infants when the tornado siren sounded in forney. >> i went and jumped in the bathtub, put a comforter over us and that was it. >> reporter: dawn henderson survived in the bathroom of her business. >> if this concrete wall had gone in the other direction, it would have crashed into me. >> reporter: loss of property everywhere. but so far no reports of loss of life. karen brown, cbs news, forney, texas. new findings from researchers in norway may

further muddy the debate over routine breast cancer screening. the new study found between 15 and 20% of tumors spotted by mammograms would not have caused any problems during a woman's lifetime but the tumors are being treated anyway often with surgery or chemotherapy. researchers estimate that for every 2500 women screened, one death from breast cancer will be prevented but six to ten women will be overdiagnosed. you can read more about this study on the buddy check 9 facebook page. another study finds eating certain vegetables could improve breast cancer survival rates. the research was presented to the american association for cancer research. scientists found higher survival rates in women who made more cruciferous vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and brussel sprouts. they have bioactive compounds believed to help fight cancer. making news now at 5:51ed united nations team is expected to arrive in syria later today or even possibly tomorrow.
