of the roadway getting by. that's what caused this delay about seven miles an hour trying to get past the activity. let's take a live look there on the northbound side of 95. you can see how heavy it is trying to get through the area. so keep that in mind if you're used to it being a little lighter than normal with spring break but not this morning on the northbound side of 95. let's go further north. if you're planning to head into springfield. everyone else is stuck behind this in dumfries and in springfield it's just a bit slow getting on to 395 but no big deal. this time all the way to 66 inbound, you just have a bit of slow traffic in centreville. we'll go inside the beltway near the parkway 066 which is run -- on 66 which is running well into the downtown area. in my next report i'll update you on that situation in dumfries at 6:11. at the top of the hour we focus on the race for the republican presidential nomination. mitt romney went 3 for 3 in tuesday's primaries. here's how the dell gant count looks this morning.

romney had 655. he's more than halfway to the 1,144 needed to clinch the nomination. rick santorum is a distant second with 278. >> romney won tuesday's contest in maryland, the district and wisconsin. out of those the badger state was a big prize. >> romney won by 5 percentage points over santorum. he focused on november while santorum is focusing on the next fry marries. -- >> primaries. >> together we'll build the greatest america we've ever known where prosperity has grown and shared, not limited and divided, an america that guarantees ours is the door that innovation and greatness always knocks on first. >> we have now reached the point where it's halftime, half the delegates in this process have been selected and who's ready to charge out of the locker room of pennsylvania for a strong second half? captured 49% of the vote. rick santorum in second with 29%. newt gingrich finished third. >> in the district romney got 70% of the votes cast. congressman ron paul finished in second with 12 prns. newt gingrich in third with 10%. rick santorum was not on the ballot there. >> to the local races. one in the district still too close to call. >> it's the deductic -- democratic primary for the at large council seat. delia goncalves is live in northwest to tell us what comes next. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning, mike. a tight race. only 533 votes separate the top two contenders. that means the folks here at the board of elections will be very busy starting later this morning. they'll be counting thousands of absentee and provisional ballots. we're told that count will take likely about ten days or so. extremely low voter turnout in the district may have contributed to the tight results. sekou biddle says those who cast ballots want to clean

house in a council that's been suffering through scandal after scandal it seems. incumbent vincent orange in fact has been linked to campaign contributions from jeff thompson who is under federal investigation. >> the powers that be really want to deal with ethics, then they should join me in pushing and promoting my bill to ban corporate contributions and outside employment by council members that work for entities doing business with the city. >> i think a lot of people just want to believe they can have the leaders that aren't going to constantly be caught up in this kind of mess and these sort of embarrassing situations. >> reporter: incumbent council member marion barry from ward 8 won reelection despite a large field of young candidates running a change in the council. coming up at 6:30, we head to maryland and take a look at the new sixth district in maryland. back to you, mike. >> thank you, delia, delia goncalves live in northwest washington this morning. just a few more election headlines for you.

in the 5 t congressional race it will be roscoe bartlet against is john delaney. five house delegates up for reelection won their primaries including donna edwards and congressman chris van holland n. hagerstown mayor brucci survived the challenges. our time 16:05. a fire crash in chevy chase circle has claimed the life of a third person. 16-year-old renard ossman of the district died early this morning. he had been on life support. on march 23 he was driving the car which crashed on connecticut avenue just north of the district line. two back seat passengers both teenagers were killed instantly. an 18-year-old survived. police say the car had been stolen and officers began following it just before the crash. the plan to bring a casino to prince george's county has the support of the county council now.

six council members voted last night to support a casino plan. three voted against. lawmakers in anap us are voting whether or not to allow a full- fledge casino along with table games. if it's approved by state lawmakers, the expansion still needs to get the okay of voters in a statewide referendum. jessica doyle is watching your money and your health. >> the big question is are you ready for a health crisis? >> this really isn't something a lot of us want to think about let alone save for. we want to save for things like vacations or a new car. but medical emergencies do happen and a new study shows a lot of us simply are not prepared. the study is from afleck and finds that 60% of local workers don't think it's very likely they or a family member will be diagnosed with a serious illness. 59% of us don't have a financial plan and 55% have less than $1,000 set aside to tap just in case a medical crisis happens. as a rule of thumb, many

personal finance experts strongly recommend you always have three to six months of living expenses in a separate savings account to tap just in case of medical emergencies or job losses. in the meantime yahoo is expected to announce a new round of layoffs today. "the wall street journal" reports the internet company will cut around 2,000 jobs or about 14% of its work force and further cuts are likely. the long expected move is aimed at cutting costs as yahoo tries to change its focus after years of flat revenue growth and declining traffic at some of its websites. it's getting a lot harder to find an apartment nowadays. so far this year apartment vacancies fell to their lowest left since 20001678 the vacancy rate fell at 4.9% in the first quarter from 6.2% a year earlier. the reason why? foreclosures keep pushing people into rentals. at the same time young adults are entering the rental market. rents rose 1% in the last three months. that would be a 4% gain this

we are in for a chilly start. some areas have dipped into the 40s. we'll be nice and mild today. upper 60s by lunch time with a mix of sun and clouds. slight chance after shower this afternoon. high temperatures around 75 degrees. your full seven-day forecast in just a few minutes. right now monika with time saver traffic. we've been telling but a tour bus accident since about 5:25 this morning on the northbound side of i-95 here in dumfries near mine road. you can see authorities are on the scene with a couple of lanes getting by. about a three-mile backup at this time. i'll keep you posted on this situation coming up at 6:17. andrea and mike? coming up 06:12, we could hear today from the woman at the center of this megamillions drama in maryland. >> a new chapter.

mirlande wilson is expected to meet with an attorney today and maybe we'll know if she really has that winning ticket from last week's drawing. >> our scott broom reports on this story that seems just to be getting stranger by the day. >> reporter: media stormed by a mother of seven who says she won megamillions but can't seem to get the story straight about whether she even holds the ticket in a thick haitian accent [ inaudible ] >> reporter: are you sure you have the numbers? >> i remember some of the numbers. i was so shocked. [indiscernible] >> reporter: it's a megamess especially at this mcdonald's in million fundamental mill, maryland outside baltimore with co-workers tell "the new york post" they're in financial limbo because they claim they were in a pool with wilson and believe they may be winners too. >> reporter: are they fighting with you over the ticket? >> yes. >> reporter: wilson says she

will not share because the winning ticket purchased at this nearby 7-eleven was not part of the pool. she says a friend bought it for her. but again today, wilson cleared nothing up and officials at maryland's lottery headquarters said neither wilson nor anyone else has stepped forward with a winning ticket so they can verify nothing. on facebook today, viewers' patience is wearing thin. stop interviewing her and giving her the attention that her crazy tale self wants wrote one viewer. neighbors of this troubled neighborhood who say they know her and says she has a heart of gold, but none wanted to appear a camera. >> it's one of three winning tickets sold in the friday drawing. no one has come forward in illinois or kansas. in kansas the winner can remain anonymous but they have to show their faces in illinois.

it will be a day of cleanup today in the dallas fort worth area. big d was hit by a big warm of tornadoes tuesday. that was a funnel cloud over interstate 20 near arlington, texas. at least a dozen tornadoes were spotted. amazingly no one was killed. video of the damage shows even tractor-trailers picked up and tossed like toys. the hardest hit area was the suburb of lancaster. about 150 people remain out of their homes. >> we ask that people seek shelter outside of the city if they have that luxury. again the recreation center is open and available as a temporary shelter. >> the storm shut down dallas forth worth international airport, a hub for american airlines. it damaged more than 100 planes. american can selled at least one -- canceled at least one flight each from national or

bwi. check the airlines if you're plying -- if you're flying with that carrier. >> they had to shut down operations for several hours. it was hail that damaged a lot of the planes. the trailers were flying. they must have been a couple hundred feet in the air. they're empty trailers but it gives you the idea of the force of tornadoes. we get tornadoes-- >> like the movie twister but not a movie. >> we're coming up on the tenth anniversary of the la plata tornado so they'll have big commemorations of that. it should be a very interesting day. let's talk about our weather. we'll start with the allergy update. the numbers, we get them just about midday. you probably already know tree pollen is high. the grass is low. mold spores low as well. we have a pretty good morning. it's dry. we had a couple of showers overnight which are gone. temperatures in the 40s to low 50s. sunrise 6:47 with a mix of sun and clouds setting at about

7:35 this afternoon. our day planner, we'll stay with that mix of sun and clouds. 59 by 9:00. by noon upper 60s. northwesterly winds at about 10, 11 miles an hour. for the afternoon there is a slight showers chance but that's well south of d.c. i think fredricksburg or culpeper, maybe toward interstate 64, you will see a much better chance for showers there than here in the metro or points north. high today about 75 degrees. three hours ago we were looking at the remnants of a couple of showers overnight. we'll go back and that's it. this morning an isolated shower trying to hold together and not doing a good job heading to the northeastern corner of maryland. your temperatures are down in the mid-40s at reston and sterling, love vets -- love lovettsville. here in washington under cloudy skies, good visibility on our michael & son weather camera. we have 54. winds are calm and the barometer continues to drop at 29.72.

we're watching temperatures in the southeast and central part of the country. 50s and 60s. so there's warmth there being drawn up. on the back side of the storm system, 30s in denver. 20s in albuquerque. they had a lot of snow in the mountains. this is also the same storm that brought the tornadic thunderstorms to dallas yesterday. heavy weather now in louisiana, the lower mississippi valley. it looks like the showers the next few days are going to stay mainly south of us. while we're running dry, that trend is going to continue. the sixth driest march on record. 75 today. slight chance of a shower south. 40s tonight. maybe even upper 30s. tomorrow cooler, 62. friday and saturday both look like cool days highs around 60. milder easter sunday. slight chance of a shower sunday night and still cool monday and especially tuesday. 6:17. let's grow to monika with time saver traffic. i'm sure delays are building now. delays are definitely building. this is why. on the northbound side of i-95, a live look from sky 9. you see the tour bus in the ditch? that happened at about 5:25

this morning. virginia state police have been on the scene ever since. close to an hour now northbound 95 here in dumfries before route 234. you can see the two left lanes are getting by but you have got a solid backup right now on the northbound side of i-95. let's take a look at our maps. i can show you all that red going i'd say maybe 12 miles an hour as you head all the way up into dumfries before route 234 again as you saw two left lanes getting by there. let's go to some better news. on the beltway north of town outer loop slows down just about at university boulevard. it continues to georgia avenue. so a little better than normal on the north side of town. we'll take a live look at 270 as well. a bit of slow traffic over at route 109. once you're here southbound at 121 it breaks loose down into rogville and the point -- rockville and to the point where the lanes divide. an update on the situation in dumfries at 6:25. our time is 6:18. next in sports, the nationals shake up their rotation before

then zimmerman, gonzalez and jackson and detwiler. now the races of the mascots. boston led 8-7 in the bottom of the 9th. one on for espinoza. he singles to center. great shot there. eeon desmond races around to score the tying run. blocked at the plate. nats lose. >> the baylor lady bears basketball team has done what no other women's team has ever done. not even mike's huskies. they went 40-0. baylor took on notre dame last night in the ncaa women's basketball championship. brittany griner led the ladies from texas with 20 points and 13 boards. baylor wins 80-61, the first team in ncaa history to win 40 games in a season. as expect nod major changes to the reds skins uniform in 2012. nike is now in charge of n.f.l. jerseys.

welcome back. we are at 6:29. thanks for waking up with us. this is the place you can always get your weather fir. here's a live look at -- first. here's a live look in northwest. it is 54 degrees. it was on this date back in 1968 dr. martin luther king, jr. was killed and riots broke out in this part of the city and the scars remained for years after. but in the last decade, it has once again become a vibrant part of the district. thank you for starting your day with us. i'm andrea roane. i'm mike hydeck. meteorologist howard bernstein live on the weather terrace this morning checking in on the weather. no jacket. >> no jacket this morning even though we're in the 40s. some 40s -- 50s. some 40s in the suburbs.

a mix of cloud and sun i think is what we'll see for much of the day. we start you off with the day planner. but lynch time we are -- lunch time we're looking at upper 60s. this afternoon partly sunny, mostly cloudy at times. any showers should be well south of washington. maybe down toward fredricksburg and points south thereof with a high around 75 degrees. overnight had a couple of showers here and there, not much but there were one or two that came through. this morning you see the clouds that have spread out from the west. the cold spots are in the mid- 40s like frederick right now. mid-50s for winchester and hagerstown, annapolis at 54. easton you're a little cool at 46. this afternoon we're going into the 70s and then cooler after this. inside to monika santami. 6:30. we have had some serious issues this morning. on the northbound side of i- 95 it's this accident in dumfries before route in involving a bus. virginia state police have been on the scene for over an hour

now. you can see the flashing lights. the two left lanes getting by. i would say probably about a five-mile delay on the northbound side of i-95 trying to get past the accident with the two left lanes open. we'll show what you it looks like on a map so you can see all the red i'm talking about and that's your delay coming up into dumfries past route in. you need to stay to -- route in. you need to stay to the left to -- route 234. you need to stay to the left to get by. it's normal through landmark. all lays are open. let's go over to 66. that has not been bad at all. inbound side you have a bit of slow traffic in centreville. we'll take a live look near compton road. things are actually much lighter than normal. it's been a good trip this whole week on 66 heading over into fairfax and the beltway. that's good news for everyone there. in my next report, i'll update you on the situation in

dumfries at 6:42. members of the occupy movement marched the through freedom plaza tuesday. they're upset with what they call the unfair burden of college loan debts. >> some of them say the debt they voluntarily took on should be forgiven. a pretty hot topic on cbs this morning. gayle king joins us live from new york with a preview. good morning, gayle. >> we all know about college debt, don't we? good morning to you. the number really is stunning. student debt in america now tops $1 trillion. that's with a t. more than we owe in credit cards, car loans and it threatens the fragile economic recovery. we're going to ask former labor secretary robert wise why he compares it to the housing bubble and what can be done about that. those stories and more ahead at 7:00. we'll see you then. >> we'll be watching, thank you. we turn our attention to campaign 2012. the ruts from -- the results from the primary on tuesday.

mitt romney had a clean sweep. he has more than half the delegates he needs to win the republican nomination. in the district the democratic primary for at large city council is too close to call. right now incumbent vincent orange holds a one-point lead over sekou biddle. >> in maryland's new sixth congressional district, it will be republican incumbent roscoe bartlet against john delaney. delia goncalves has more. >> reporter: congressman bartlet could face his most competitive contest after ten terms in office. the man who hopes to unseat the long-term congressman political newcomer john delaney. the potomac businessman spent $1 million of his own money on his own campaign, and he easily outspent state senator

garaglio. he says if he beats bartlet, lefocus on jobs and the -- he will focus on jobs and the economy. >> i think we have so much in common if we focus on the real issues in this country. >> reporter: speaking of the d.c. election, that very close race between sekou biddle and vincent orange for council at large seat here in the district of columbia, well, it is too close to call as you had mentioned earlier, mike. so the folks here at the board of elections will be very busy this morning counting all the provisional and absentee ballots. they say the count will likely take about ten days so we'll have a result after ten days or so. back to you. >> it will be interesting to see if there is going to be a recount. there were a lot of races around the region so if you'd like to get all the results in one place, wusa9.com is where you need to go. you can find them right at the top of our home page.

the university of maryland student accused of making threats against the campus is out of the hospital this morning. 19-year-old alexander song of fulton, maryland is accused of going on websites last month and threatening to go on a shooting rampage. he underwent a psychiatric evaluation when he was released from the hospital yesterday. police arrested him. he was released on his own recognizance later but is banned from the university of maryland campus. when it comes to speeding, virginia does not mess around. aaa says police in the commonwealth issued a staggering $101 million in speeding tickets in 2010. that's the last year the numbers were available. virginia does not have speed cameras. officers do all of this paperwork. aaa says they may be doing too much of it. it points to the small town of hopewell outside of richmond. eight officers along i-295 generated $2 million in tickets, eight officers. coming up on 6:36, jessica doyle is watching your money.

bus accident in dumfries on the northbound side of i-95 right here before route 234 since about 5:25 this morning. virginia state police have kept us posted on the situation there. look at all of this red trying to get past the accident where the cleanup continues. we'll take a live look from sky 9 on the northbound side of 95. it's going to look like this for about eight miles now. northbound on 95 and you can see the flashing lights at the bottom of your screen. that's where the activity is but they're zooming out for me and looking on the northbound side of 95. solid delays into dumfries this morning. i'm so sorry about this. very tough because you're used to it being lighter than normal this week with spring break but not this morning on the northbound side. we'll keep you posted on the situation. as soon as it clears up, we will let you know. let's go back to our maps on the southbound side of 270. northbound side there had been an accident at route 117. everything was cleared to the left shoulder. southbound still quite heavy as you leave route 109.

it improves to montrose road a. bit slow to the point where the lanes divide. want to give you a heads up. vre train delays 10 to 20 minutes from alexandria this morning. coming up in my next report, an update on 95 at 6:58. weather time now, let's take a look outside. we are expected to head into the 70s once again today. we're 54 degrees right now. we're looking at a live shot from springfield this morning. traffic moving pretty smoothly. howard says we could face ath bit after shower later in the afternoon. >> but looks like take threat will be south of washington. once again looks like another dry day and our rain deficits are running about three and a half inches for the year and we're adding to that every day we don't get some day. right now it looks like some of the longer range models that the summertime temperature should be normal, maybe slightly below normal but if we're dry at the ground, it's that much easier to heat up so we need a little more rain than we've been seeing.

temperatures this morning starting in the 40s and 50s out there. low 50s but not a bad morning with light winds, very comfortable. we do have mostly cloudy skies now but i think partly sunny to mostly cloudy skies will be the rule today. our day planner mid-50s at 8:00. by lunch time upper 60s. we will head toward 4:00 p.m. and 74 degrees. this evening we're going to be down in the upper 60s by 8:00 but still a pretty good day with the threat of a shower down south. fredricksburg, culpeper, going down that way a better chance than here in the metro. had a couple of sprinkle overnight. there they are and there they go. left with the clouds this morning but a comfortable start with readings in the mid-40s over toward easton and denton at 46 degrees. gaithersburg 48. along with culpeper. shenandoah valley low to mid- 50s right now. same story in southern maryland and also here in washington. as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera, cloudy skies. a little bit of color but that's about it. 54, calm winds, cloudy skies at

national. the air is kind of dry here. out to the west and southwest we are seeing lots of showers. some in ohio. big time stories in louisiana. tornadic thunderstorms in the dallas area yesterday. that system will throw some moisture off to the east but looks like it's going to stay to our south across areas in southern virginia as we go through the afternoon and evening hours. there's not much there but here's richmond at 6:00. so business or travel takes you down south, you have much better chance of seeing it there than here. tonight also into the carolinas, clouds and even other systems here over the next couple of days generally stay south of us. we're going to cool down but it does look like the rain chances are going to be fairly slip. today 75, slight chance after shower south. tonight in the 40s, maybe a few upper 30s. wins out of the north today and tonight about 10 miles an hour. 62 tomorrow. cool, even cooler on friday, 30s to low 40s for lows with a 60-degree high. over the weekend easter is coming up. saturday 60. easter sunday we're in the

walk, you may have not known about the day and that's why we're here now. tell us about the day itself. >> we have several events going on across the country. we have okayed events will people will be taking a commitment to starting walking or doing something more healthy in their life. 70% of americans don't get enough exercise. if we can get some commitment and awareness to saying you know what? 30 minutes a day, that's all you need to saturday getting on the right path. >> lunch time is a pretty good time to do that. the weather is nice this time of year. one of the things i've noticed, i drive up and down 270, you have built a nice walking path on the campus there in gaithersburg. >> absolutely. most of our facilities actually have some sort of opportunity for the employees to get out and get some exercise in. this new one that we'll be ribbon cutting today so thank you for the nice weather will be allowing us to open up and have a pretty sizable event of employees going out and working. in fact, the materials we used
