its doors. arlington, al alexandria, and manassas. saying it was forced to close its doors and students studying for careers in healthcare are left with their academic future in limbo. kristin fisher is at their manassas campus where students and staff are accusing administrators of mismanagement, defeat, and corruption. kristen. >> that's right. the truth of the matter is, most people here simply don't know what to think. they came here for answers, but nobody with the school is inside and in fact, a lot of the folks that are still sitting on these steps have been out here all day long. they want to know what's going to happen to the tuition that they have already paid. what's going to happen to the credits that they have already earned. will they transfer? so far, they have gotten zero answers. >> we were seven weeks away from accomplishing a 20 month

program, sacrificing time, relationships, money, jobs, you name it, and yesterday that all was brought to an abrupt stop. >> devastated is an under statement. john was just weeks away from becoming an x-ray technologist when his school lost its accreditation. >> we feel hurt, gypped, that opportunity that you have been striving for was ripped out from under you. >> shawn paid $30,000 in tuition. others have taken out student loans, financial aid. >> it puts a damper on my situation for a job to take care of my family. >> teachers have also been left in limbo. they haven't been paid in two months. >> we have instructors that quit their jobs to work for act, started on monday and got a pink slip on tuesday. they were kept in the blind as well. >> i think all of us are at a loss for words. we want answers and we're not getting anything. i tried to get answers at their corporate headquarters in arlington.

the door was open, but no one was inside. all i found was this letter from the president and ceo, jeff moore, who blames the whole thing on the department of education. he says the department refused to release funds after an audit revealed problems at the school. students and staff aren't buying it. >> i would like to see the money trail. i'd like to see where the money went. >> i would ask you to find your conscious, because what you're doing is wrong. a lot of brilliant minds here and this is not right. >> now i've tried to contact jeff moore, the ceo and president of act college. so far, he has not responded. i have also tried contacting the department of education. i was told that i would get some answers by 5:00. i am still waiting to get any sort of response from the department of education and i'm waiting right along with these folks, although they of course, have a whole lot more at stake. back to you. >> they are waiting and hoping for a resolution and soon. kristen, thank you. derek. >> lesli, the forecast about

the tornadoes packed winds of 135 miles per hour. those winds flattened homes and tossed trucks around. we saw that video yesterday. property damage from the storms is massive. however, still we hear luckily, nobody was killed. susan with the latest on the cleanup from forney, texas. >> reporter: the folks here who were hit by these tornadoes and are suffering this kind of damage told me all day long they are simply grateful no one was killed. volunteers are clearing the rubble from what used to be chris wilson's home. just about everything is gone, but he is thankful his wife narrowly escaped. >> she left minutes before the tornado came. >> wilson was at work when the tornado hit. he's hoping he can find pictures or moe men toes in the debris. >> all this stuff can be replaced. i have some memories that i may

lose, but i can make new ones. >> reporter: he is one of the residents that lost their homes. no one died. >> fact that everybody woke up in forney yesterday morning is still alive today in forney, that's a blessing. zero fatalities. >> reporter: the national weather service estimates a dozen twisters touched down in north texas. one sent a tractor trailer flying into a dallas home. damage sex tensive in lan caster. the twister's path of destruction can be seen from the air. williams home is still standing while her neighbors house is gone. >> we are blessed. we're spared. god is good. >> at the dallas fort worth airport, hundreds of flights are canceled. many passengers were stranded overnight. >> there's probably hundreds and hundreds of people just laying on the floor on cots. >> many say that's a minor

inconvenience compared to all those who are now homeless. and the national weather service is investigating the pattern of the storm, how they hopscotched the area, possibly limiting the damage that could have been a lot worse. in forney, texas, 9news now. >> no fatalities is indeed a miracle. the national weather service says april typically is the worst month for tornado season and yesterday's outburst does suggest this year could be worse than normal. anny, could we see yet another round of storms coming our way any time soon? >> this has been a slow moving storm system, derek, and slowly moving to the east. dallas out of the clear. we have sunny skies. good news for folks cleaning up. we have some severe thunderstorm concerns for around the houston area, along the eastern gulf coast of texas. and i'm going to zoom in on here. we have had quite a few reports of hail. softball sized hail, in fact, we have one here coming out of

the damages. the university of maryland student accused of making threats against the campus is now out of the hospital. alexander song was ordered to undergo an evaluation after he went to websites last month and threatened to go on a shooting rampage. police arrested him yesterday after he was let out of the hospital. he was then released after appearing in court, but he is banned from the maryland campus. and the owners of an illegal daycare center in prince william county are under indictment tonight. joan carlo and rosio chavez face charges of child neglect and obtaining money under false pretenses. police say a ten week old girl was found unconscious there last month and she later died. two daycare workers were charged with child endangerment. those charges are linked to the

daycare operation, not the baby's death. a victorious mitt romney worked the crowd at the newspaper association of america here in d.c. today. the former massachusetts governor pulled off the clean sweep of wisconsin, maryland, and d.c. primaries. the win added 86 delegates to his total, giving him more than half the amount needed. and it was a big day for incumbents in our local races. in maryland, they all won their nominations in their reelection bids and john delany pulled off the gum set win for the democratic no nomination in the newly redrawn sixth district. here in the district of columbia, it was a clean sweep for d.c. council, including marion barry, who said this will be his last campaign. it looks as though there will be a recount in the at large race between vincent orange and saku. bruce jon season is here. you have talked to both

candidates. what are they saying? >> one is saying a win is a win, the other is saying we'll see. take a look. >> councilman vincent orange came on strong in the late vote counting tuesday, pulling straight ahead of challenger. when the dust settled this morning, orange had won the democratic at large council primary seats by more than 500 votes. it was the closest contest in recent d.c. history. >> absolutely, i feel like a winner. we're in a great place yesterday with a great day for us. we are now up by 543 votes. >> we are a couple hundred votes away from winning. i feel pretty good. >> board of election officials won't declare an official winner until friday, april 13, after a few thousand absentee and special ballots are counted. >> we are checking the mail every day for ab absentee ballots. and we are going to start going through the special ballots now. those are the ballots for voters who showed up at the polling place, but weren't on

it all out. he joins us live from baltimore. i do not envy you. go ahead. >> reporter: the claims are wacky. the guy's mother tells a tv station in jackson, mississippi, that he is a winner. we are trying to confirm this all. so far, a lot of claims, no winning ticket yet. today's latest, a jackson, mississippi, tv station reporting that this man of maryland told family that he has the golden ticket for maryland's share of the megamillions jackpot. court records show he has been accused repeatedly of working as a contractor without a license. the report is unconfirmed by lottery officials. meanwhile, the media circus continues with haitian immigrant, mirlanda wilson who hired a lawyer to handle her claims that she has the winning ticket. claims her newly hired lawyer could not confirm in a bizarre

maryland's two senators say the aide should allow for the recovery up to 75% of the cleanup costs. the hurricane tore through southern maryland last august. the white house won't need to run the sprinklers any time soon. that's because construction workers did it for them. they accidentally broke a water line this afternoon and that little geyser there went sort of soaring dozens of feet into the air. d.c. water quickly sent the crew to help out with the contractors and of course the repairs. >> somebody forgot to call the utility. >> exactly. we have a link here, and it's a big one. >> we need the water, you know, it's been hard to get a good storm system to bring us much needed rain. i'm sure the lawns and gardens will appreciate it. unfortunately, if you want the rain to clear out the air, because your allergies are killing you. i know it's killing me. not seeing it here in the next several days. we'll see lots of sunshine.

a california boater is lucky to be alive tonight. it happened late last night. life guards rescued the man as the vessel went up in flames. the sailboat ended up sinking. investigators are trying to find out what caused that fire. take a look at what happened in indiana when a semitrailer truck ran off the road. an overhead sign came crashing down on to the expressway. this all went down in the middle of the night. the semi driver had to jerk to his right and slam into a

guardrail and ended up crashing into the support rails that had been holding that sign up. the sign partially collapsed and blocked two eastbound lanes, fortunately, nobody was hurt. all work is stopped on a new york city subway extension project after a deadly accident. it happened off the 11th avenue inman in manhattan. one worker was killed, three others were hurt. investigators are now trying to find out what went wrong. still to come, why the cost of your cab may soon skyrocket here in the district. and baby on board. we'll tell you about a special delivery 30,000 feet up. >> plus, a heartwarming reunion 25 years in the making. we'll bring this story of a mother daughter reunion right to you after the break.

first tonight, a mother's love knows no boundaries and hope really does make dreams come true. after having her daughters taken from her nearly 25 years ago, a nigerian mother made the trek across the world for a reunion that until now, she's only been able to wish for. one of our viewers told us about this story. we sent ken to be with the family where the dream of being together did come true. >> reporter: the hands of time weren't moving fast enough.

they anxiously awaited for their mother. these few hours were nothing compared to the lifelong separation they've had to endure. both were taken out of nigeria and away from their mother from their own father when they were toddlers. it wasn't until a few years ago that their biological mother finally found them. >> when i was 24, i got an e- mail from this woman and she's like, i'm your mom. >> soon after that e-mail, she traveled to nigeria to meet her mom. the reunion would be the first time embracing and setting eyes on the woman who gave her life. >> i'm nervous, i don't know what she's like. i don't know. i just seen her through pictures. >> sisters managed to get her mother a visa. after a lifetime of waiting, it finally happened. >> welcome to america. >> 53-year-old walked out of the airport gates for the first embrace with her daughters in nearly 25 years. >> i'm so happy.

the firefighters were working this morning trying to get it under control. both the roof and the attic severely damaged there. luckily nobody home at the time. nobody still knows exactly what caused that blaze. and investigators are trying to find the cause of another house fire. this left a d.c. firefighter injured. the flames swept through the second floor and the attic of a home in southeast this morning. a firefighter suffered minor injuries, nobody else was hurt. taxi cab fares could be going up. the head of the taxi cab commission says a new fare system could be in place by april 21 if the commission goes along. the new fares would be $2.16 a mile. instead of the current $1.50. the washington examiner reports that it could take until may for all of the cabs to have their meters recalibrated. a new report this everyoning outlines the most pressing transportation project needed in maryland. a d.c. based think tank put it
