washington came after he swept two primaries tuesday, winning in wisconsin, maryland, and d.c. the former governor supporters are calling on rick santorum and newt gingrich to drop out of the race. but romney isn't mentioning them by name. >> i hope that we're able to resolve our nomination process as soon as possible, of course, because i'd like to focus our time and attention on those key battleground states. >> romney now has more than half the delegates he'll need to become the gop nominee, but his chief rival isn't backing down. >> we're going to be all throughout the state over the next three weeks. >> talking to reporters in his home state of pennsylvania, santorum sounded upbeat. >> very, very confident that there's a lot of strength and support here in pennsylvania. >> the latest polling from that state shows santorum with a 6 point lead. he and romney are expected to spend the next three weeks battling it out there.

>> santorum says he still believes he can win enough delegates to prevent romney from clinching the nomination and force a contested convention. at the white house, danielle nottingham, back to you, derek. >> thank you, danielle. that same poll you just heard danielle mention has gingrich in last place. president obama today signed the bill banning members of congress, thousands of federal workers, even the commander in chief himself from profiting from information they learned on the job. the stop trading on congressional knowledge or stock act is aimed at preventing insider trading. >> there is still one undecided race after yesterday's primary in the district and tonight, vincent orange and biddle are neck in neck to become the next member of the d.c. council. >> right now, vincent orange at the democratic race for the d.c. council, but everybody is saying this race is too close to call at this point.

>> councilman vincent orange came on strong tuesday, pulling slightly ahead of challenger. when the dust settled this morning, orange won the democratic at large primary seat by more than 500 votes. it was the closest contest in recent d.c. history. >> absolutely i feel like a winner. i think we're in a great place. it was a great day for us. >> we are a couple hundred votes away on a city wide race from winning. >> board of election officials won't declare an official winner. meanwhile, incumbent vincent orange likes his chances of at least splitting the outstanding votes with biddle and two other challengers. he remains hopeful of pulling out a miracle finish. if it's less than 1%, there's an automatic recount. this is bruce johnson reporting for 9news now. >> in maryland, an update on three young candidates running for the school board.

18-year-old rahila, 19-year-old edward burros. and 20-year-old david murray, all won their primary elections in the prince georges county school board race. burrows is already the incumbent in the district 8 race. and you can see the results from all of our local races at wusa9.com. that's where we also have voter guides for the general election for november. new information tonight on a deadly pedestrian accident. police have released the name of the man who was killed by a trash truck. he is 31-year-old stanley jr. and he's from washington, d.c. now the truck hit and killed huff monday afternoon as it was backing out of an alley along the 2900 block of harvard court northwest. the case remains under investigation. the taliban are claiming responsibility for a suicide bombing in afghanistan that killed at least ten people, including three u.s. soldiers. afghan officials say at least four afghan police officers are also among the dead.

today's attack took place at a park in what's been a relatively peaceful part of northern afghanistan. attorneys for the army psychiatrist charged in the fort hoot shooting spree asked to postpone his military trial. this time until october. during today's pretrial hearing, the attorneys didn't give a reason for that request, but a judge ruled on the matter by next week. the major is charged with 13 counts of murder, stemming from a shooting rampage in november of 2009. and due in court today, the man now charged in monday's deadly shooting spree in oakland, california. 43-year-old one goh. he shot up a nursing school that kicked him out just weeks before and seven people died, three others were wounded. the director of the nursing program believes she was the real target, but she wasn't on the campus at the time. we want to update you on our breaking news. ken is live at howard university where the entire athletic program has been

suspended. kenny. >> well, we're getting new details. this is a statement that came from the university spokeswoman a couple minutes ago. we're being told that this has to do with ncaa rules violations. they aren't being specific at all as to what that violation possibly could be, but we're now being told that a number of student athletes are temporarily being withheld from competition and we are also being told that the competition schedule will continue as it is slated on schedule. but once again, the details exactly as to why the university has chosen to self- impose this on themselves is not known right now. earlier today, we did see several teens practicing on the field. the football team, the track and field team, all held afternoon practices here at the campus stadium despite this announcement that was made earlier. at this point, much speculation as to what exactly is at the center of this. we have not gotten any confirmation as to exactly what

these possible violations can be. students out here had plenty to say about it. >> do away with the entire athletic system. pretty unfortunate. i don't really know the extent of the allegations of what's going on, but i say that it's terrible. a lot of students are here for sports. >> we did try and speak with several student athletes out here outside the stadium. many of them refusing to talk to us. some of them ignoring our questions, but one athlete said they have been instructed not to speak to the media. there is a lot more information we're expected to hear from university officials. if anything changes, we'll let you know. back to you, lesli. >> you expect to hear from university officials at some point this evening? >> reporter: some point, we're expected to hear more details. the latest information they gave a couple minutes ago. we want specific details and we have some questions that need to be answered. we hope to hear from them later. >> we'll see you then, kenny.

for 30 years, act college helped students earn degrees in medical and healthcare training, but tonight, the school's three campuses in arlington, alexandria, and manassas are closed and students are left wondering what's next? kristen moore has more on their saga. >> we were seven weeks away from accomplishing a 20 month program sacrificing time, relationships, money, jobs, you name it, and yesterday that all was brought to a stop. >> devastated is an under statement. sean was weeks away from becoming an x-ray technologist when his school lost its accredit accreditation. >> we feel hurt, gypped, that opportunity you have been striving for was ripped out from under you. >> i think all of us are at a loss for words. we want answers and we're not getting anything. >> reporter: i tried to get answers in arlington. the door was open, but no one was inside. all i found was this letter from the president and ceo,

the final report is out on the death of whitney houston. and that report says there was a spoon and a powdery substance that was white found in the singer's hotel room. houston drowned last month at a beverly hills hotel. we'll have more information on this story as soon as it comes into us. after years of stories and neighborhood discussions, tonight arlington naturalists are confirming that a coyote has been spotted in the county.

it was caught on camera last week inside patomac. the county's national resources manager, i should say natural resources manager says the department received reports and photos from residents for years. but this video is the first concrete proof. he says the coyote is not considered a threat since they tend to avoid people. coming up, a bumpy ride sends airline passengers on a detour to the hospital. we'll tell you what happened. it's time to get going.

risen savior who died that we might live. >> the president hosted more than 100 spiritual leaders from around the country. severe turbulence roughed up a plane over the skies of louisiana sending seven people to the hospital. that united airlines flight was on its way from tampa to houston earlier today. that plane did land safely in houston with an ambulance standing by to take those injured passengers and flight attendants to the hospital. it's not clear how, you know, significant those injuries were or if that turbulence was related to last night's storms across texas. >> the house is gone. >> what? >> oh my god. there went a house. >> there it is. it's gone. >> people inside a silver company in texas, sat helplessly as they watched a tornado tear through last night. it was one of more than a dozen tornadoes believed to have touched down in the lone star

state yesterday. but as elizabeth reports, despite all the damage, there's a tremendous feeling of relief tonight. >> right there in the corner, right there. >> that corner is where gwen rode out the violent storms that tore through her texas neighborhood tuesday afternoon. as tornadoes like this one approached, she covered herself with whatever she could grab. >> and the wind was pulling that cover back. i just saw debris. >> people unable to seek cover inside came face to face with the danger. >> whenever we looked up, we saw two tornadoes at the same time touch down an eighth of a mile up from us. >> the national weather service now says at least one of the tornadoes was likely at least an ef2, packing winds of 135 miles per hour. >> oh my god.

now, that severe weather threat has gone away. looking at mainly sunny skies. but on the eastern coast, they are under a severe thunderstorm watch for today. in fact, they have had reports of damaging hail, softball sized hail and also you can see the slow moving system which went over to the east, now causing flooding concerns for new orleans. you see those areas in green. those are the flash flood watches and warnings and the system now is just right here impacting panama city. a lot out in the coast. it's a slow moving system. speaking of the atlantic, colorado state university has come out with its hurricane forecast for this season. they are expecting ten named storms. average is 12. not as active this season. four hurricanes potentially, average is 6. and we're looking at 2 major hurricanes compared to the average of 3, which means more than 111-mile per
