former nursing student one goh was arraigned on seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder. >> reporter: one goh appeared in an oakland california court wednesday afternoon. he could face the death penalty. >> the scope of this murder's rampage is unprecedented here in alameda county. >> reporter: police are using a sonar-equipped robot and divers to find the gun used in the murders. >> it's clear to us right now from the evidence that he is the person and only person responsible for what happened. and we know that he used the weapon and he know the caliber that he used. >> reporter: goh had previously complained about not being able to get a refund after withdrawing from school last fall. still, prosecutors say nobody expected this. >> he was a loner. and, you know, what some might call a loser, but that he didn't exhibit any behaves that we're aware of that would have alerted

anyone that he could commit such a murderous rampage. >> reporter: outside the school, crime scene tape is still in place while the investigation continues. just in front, a memorial to the victims is growing. these women work at a nearby office and wanted to leave flowers to remember the victims. >> my heart goes out to the families wrt timothy brown was judith seymour's fiancee. >> i never thought in a million years she would be harmed going into school. >> reporter: oikos classes are canceled until further notice. cbs news, oakland, california. attorneys for five former new orleans police officers who were sentenced for a deadly shooting following hurricane katrina say they will appeal. four of the officers involved in the shooting were given substances ranging from 38 to 65 years in prison by a federal judge. a fifth, who wasn't involved in the shooting but engineered a

four-year cover-up was given six years. on september 4, 2005 police shot six unarmed police on the danziger bridge. two died. to cover it up police planted a gun. george mcgovern is in stable condition and resting comfortably in a florida hospital. he's undergoing tests to see why he occasionally passes out and loses his ability to speak. mcgovern, a former south dakota senator, lost in a landslide to richard nixon in the 1972 presidential race. well, the jetblue pilot who had to be restrained by passengers last week has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric exam. a federal judge wants to determine if clayton osbon was legally sane at the time of the incident and if he's competent to withstand a trial. >> reporter: that pilot will be sent to a medical facility for federal prisoners. it's there he'll be tested to

determine whether or not he is legally sane and whether he was legally sane at the time that he was wrestled down to the floor of that plane. a federal judge ordered a psychiatric evaluation to determine if the jetblue pilot who allegedly had a midflight melt down is competent to stand trial. the prosecution requested the exam for clayton osbon. in a motion filed yesterday, the government stated there is reason to believe osbon is suffering from a mental disease or defect rendering him mentally incompetent. doctors will examine if the 49-year-old was legally sane during last week's incidents. passenger tackled osbon after the co-pilot locked him out of the cockpit. they say he ran up and down the aisle of the plane yelling about religion and al qaeda. it forced the crew to request an emergency landing. >> flight 191 declared emergency. >> we have to go into amarillo.

declare an emergency at this time. >> reporter: the fbi is leading a criminal investigation. owe boss facosbon faces 20 year behind bars. the ceo of jetblue says they're stanning behind the captain. >> we're supporting the captain's families as well. >> reporter: he adds, there will be lessons learned from this incident. >> it's so extraordinary as an event, right, that it's not in a playbook anywhere per se. >> reporter: jetblue ceo stresses one thing is clear -- the passengers and crew of flight 191 worked together to resolve last week's emergency. >> captain osbon is still behind bars and a hearing to see whether he can be released on bail is scheduled for next week. >> thank you. there has been another attack on afghan security forces. this morning afghan officials say gunmen killed eight afghan policemen in western afghanistan. it follows yesterday's attack by a suicide bomber which left ten

dead in northern afghanistan, including three american soldiers. the taliban has claimed responsibility for that attack. islamic rebels in somalia say their attack in mogadishu was intended to kill government ministers. somal somalia's prime minister was speaking at the time of the attack. at least six people were killed when a female suicide bomber struck a ceremony at the national theater. the victims included two of somalia's top sports officials. the u.s. has put a $10 million bounty on the head of islamic militant leader saeed. seem like an easy payday for somebody. he held a news conference across the street from pakistan's army. he taunted the u.s., calling the bounty laughable. saeed is suspected of planning the 2008 attacks on mumbai,

india. he says elle he'll be in lahore, pakistan, today. a senior u.n. official avbs in syria today to try to finalize a cease-fire agreed to by the syrian government. but as you see there, syrian troops have not stopped their crackdown on opposition forces. syrian artillery pounded the city of homs yesterday while other troops stormed rebel positions. coming up on the morning news, the rebuilding begins. people in north texas hit by a string of tornadoes assess the damage. first though, a preview of tonight's "cbs evening news." >> on opening day of our national pastime, see an extraordinary collection of treasures and the man who's preserving history. tonight on the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley.

waited on the street while firefighters put out the blaze. two people were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. the cause has not been determined. a huge clean-up effort is under way in north texas in the aftermath of tuesday's assault by up to 13 tornadoes. the twisters ripped across several communities in the dallas/ft. worth area. hardest hit was the town of forney east of dallas where residents pitched in yesterday to help one another. at least one homeowner remains optimistic about the future. >> we have insurance and everything's taken care of, so we will rebuild. >> you have quite an attitude, sir. >> thank you. i have faith. faith gives you that attitude. >> the best news about those texas tornadoes, for all the violence and destruction, no one was killed. on the "cbs moneywatch" the jobs act gets signed into law today and google focuses on high-tech glasses. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. good morning. >> good morning to you. overseas markets could not shake

off the losses. tokyo's nikkei finished to a four-week low while hong kong's hang seng fell 1%. government releases a report on weekly unemployment claims. investors hope it's good enough to trigger a rebound on the stock market. yesterday the dow lost 124 points while the nasdaq fell 45. oil prices are back above $102 a barrel this morning after sinking to their lowest level in nearly two months. the selloff was due to an increase in u.s. crude supplies which suggest demand for oil is slipping. president obama is scheduled to sign the jobs act in the white house rose guarden today. the administration says the legislation will help small businesses and start-ups grow and fuel job growth. house majority leader, eric cantor, will be at the signing

ceremony. the troubled internet company yahoo! announced it's imposing largest layoff in 17-year history. they are cutting about 2,000 workers which represents about 14% of its work force. the company expects the cuts will save about $375 million a year. imagine turning your smartphone into a pair of shades. google released this 2.5 minute video showing the possibilities of what they call project glass. it puts google right in your face. it shows issuing glass command to glasses, in order to snap a picture, call a friend and send a text. google has not said when glasses would be available to the public. bet y they look cool. i think they might be dangerous for me and anyone around -- >> it's heart to walk and text as it is. it is very high-tech and cool. ashley morrison here in new york, thank you. straight ahead, your thursday morning weather. in sports, the boys of summer return.

now for a check of today's national forecast. a system moving slowly across the south will produce thunderstorms, some severe, from the mississippi valley to florida, georgia and south carolina. missouri and the lower ohio valley will have a few showers. rain and mountain snow will continue in the northwest. southern california and parts of the southwest will have gusty winds. and it will be calm in the plains and northeast. in sports, baseball is back, everybody. the major league season officially began last week in tokyo, where seattle and oakland split two games, but for u.s. fans, it started last night at the miami marlins' colorful new stadium. players were introduced by brazilian dancers and ailing mohammed ali handed out the first pitch. the cardinals' spoiled the marlins party and they wasted no time doing it. david freese wrapped a hit, driving in two. cards' right-hander kyl loews had a no hitter when reyes got

the first marlins hit in the new park. the visitors got the win, 4-1. staying in miami for the nba, kevin durant got oklahoma city to an early lead but lebron james hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the heat a one-point halftime edge. late in the game, chris bosh kept miami ahead and the heat won their 17th straight game at home, 98-93. in boston, celtics down by one at the buzzer, the duncan keeps paul pierce away from the basket and pierce misses the fadeaway. san antonio wins it 87-86. baylor university in waco, texas, they cheered returning champions. students and fans saluted the ncaa champion lady bears. their coach kim mulkey and player of the year, brittney griner for their unprecedented 40-0 season. congratulations. the pga masters tournament gets under way today at augusta

a cbs news investigation has traced the overseas source of counterfeit cancer drugs that have been turning up at clinics around the country. armen keteyian has that story. >> reporter: this week the fda alerted health care professionals that 120 vials of fake altazan which contain no active ingredient had entered the u.s. from distributors in the uk after being purchased from wholesalers in turkey. connie is with fda office of integrity and recall. >> what we're seeing is a pattern of this risky practice of purchasing unapproved drugs from foreign suppliers. >> reporter: altuzan has the same active ingredient as cancer-fighting avastin, but only sold in turkey. according to british authorities, 82 of the counterfeit vials were shipped

to the u.s. owned here in uk and owned by tom haughton. haughton is under investigation for shipping avastin into the u.s., offering it for $2,000 a vial, some $400 less than the manufacturer's price. tom. >> hello. >> reporter: we track haughton down last month in barbados. he denied any wrongdoing and took a strong stance against counterfeits. >> we're depending on the governments and the regulators to make sure these supply chains are, indeed, safe. i will do everything within my power to ensure this never, ever happens again. >> reporter: the fda says one distributor of the worthless altu sgrchlt an was bandoon marketing. the owner pleaded guilty. according to the government, it offered big discounts on cancer treatment drugs, 14% to 16%, requesting doctors keep its

price list confidential. when contacted by cbs news, tom haughton had no comment. the fda, meanwhile, would not tell us how many doctors may have received the fake altuzan but says these counterfeit products are dangerous to patients who are relying on these medicines to get. >> important report there. well, a group of medical societies representing 375 krs says a lot of common medical tests are unnecessary. it issued a list of 45 tests and treatments that should no longer be considered routine, including electric row cardiogram when the patient shows no sign of heart disease, repeat colonoscopy within ten years, mri and c.a.t. scan for fainting spells. government studies have found that 30% is unnecessary. coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning,"

in. she's got a look at the forecast. good morning. >> it really isn't too bad. the overnight lows didn't dip that much but we will pick up a little bit of a breeze heading into tonight and tomorrow. so yeah it's going to be a little bit cooler over the next couple of days, getting ready to head out this morning, plan accordingly. i think lots of sunshine into the afternoon and evening hours and actually see a pretty decent warmup by the april standards. the day planner will take us with plenty of sunshine into the afternoon and move out of the 40s and 50s in through the 60s. yes, lower 60s by early afternoon. and that means it's a pretty good finish to our day today. and we will keep a little bit of cloud cover for the early morning hours just some passing clouds but satellite and radar is going to be clearing out nicely as high pressure starts to settle in for friday, saturday and sunday. now here's what we are expecting over the next several days as far as your extended forecast goes. we are looking at -- current temperatures in the 40s getting back into the 60s by later on today. with highs remaining in the lower 60s not only today, but

will kick up that breeze for tomorrow and then once the northwest winds move on in expect it to be pleasant over the weekend but yes a little bit chilly to start. monika? thank you so much olga. good morning everybody. it's early and there's construction outside if you're planning to head over to the west side of town. that's where it is. every single night. first of all on the westbound side of the dulles toll road you want to be aware that between the beltway and spring hill road, so you'll be diverted to the inner loop up to georgetown pike and back to the outer loop of the beltway. also between 66 and route 7 that should be cleared up within the next 20 to 30 minutes. a look live on the northbound side of i-95, things are great here as you head up from joplin road. remember how difficult that was yesterday but today right now it locks like heading to -- looks fine heading up to lorton and springfield. no problems to report as you head over -- look at the maps and no problems to report as you head over to the outer loop of the beltway. college park, there was some construction past new hampshire

avenue but otherwise you're looking okay as you head into silver spring. coming up in my next report, we'll take a look at 270. back to you guys. howard university's athletic department has imposed is penalty on themselves as they investigate. >> but as ken molestina found out. university officials at this point aren't saying much else. >> reporter: confusion struck on howard university's campus in d.c.. the trouble targeting the school's athletic department. a spokeswoman for the university saying they are investigating possible rules violations set forth by the ncaa. >> that's a pretty big deal. >> reporter: a statement confirmed the university quote temporarily withheld a number of steunt athleteth leads from corn education. -- athletes from competition. also not being said is the number of have had. it's being rue -- involved. it's being rumored they may

have misused vouchers for school shies. but that hasn't been confirmed. >> i don't know what's going on but isy that a lot -- say is that a lot of students here are on it. >> reporter: the concern surrounds the future of the athletics department as a whole. howard has a lot of students who are on athletic scholarships and the news is hitting some like a bombshell. >> take a knock at a school like that, i mean you have students who won't be able to save students who won't come in because they won't have the money to pay for it. >> we're not good anyways and i don't think the community will care but it really will detriment people who are looking to come to school. >> reporter: i'm ken molestina, 9news now. >> the penalties and the investigation will not affect the current athletic schedule. she did they say hope to resolve the matter quickly. the ncaa told us it's not their place at this point to
