students at att college which provides medical and health care training ran into a serious problem yesterday. all three campuses in arlington, alexandria and manassas, virginia shut down without warning. the school president blames it on the federal government. he says the department of education refused to release funds to the college after an audit turned up some problems. state of the unions and staff are -- students and staff as you can imagine are distraught. >> we feel hurt, gypped. like you know that opportunity that you've been striving for for so long was just ripped out from under you. >> 9news now tried to get answers from the college and from the department of education but our calls were not returned. lawyers for a rockville man have a meeting with a judge today to see if they can get the federal government to drop the lawsuit against him. 80-year-old dick reddis spent three days a week outside the planned parenthood plant in d.c. trying to get them not to

get an abortion. today is the second anniversary of the explosion at the upper big branch mine in west virginia. it's the worst coal mining disaster in the united states in four decades. 29 miners died in the blast. wednesday, alpha natural resources, the new owner of the mine, says it's planning to permanently seal the mine by this summer. also wednesday, the family of one of the men killed filed a lawsuit against former masse energy chief don blanken ship and eight others calling them responsible for the disaster. the lawsuit doesn't target masse. the commonwealth of virginia says the courts will have to abide by a $100,000 cap on damages in a wrongful death lawsuit filed against virginia tech. the parents of two of the students killed won their suit. the parents asked to be awarded $2 million despite a state cap on the damages. now the state is asking the

judge to abide by the cap. well, election day was two days ago but there's still one undecided race for d.c. council. it's between biddle and orange for the at large seat. last week orange was ahead by just about 500 votes. >> absolutely i feel like a winner. i think we're in a great place. yesterday was a great day for us, now up by 543 votes. >> we are a couple hundred votes away on a city wide vote from winning and i feel pretty good. >> they're not doing to declare an official winner until april 13th after counting all the ballots. the time is 4:43. u.s. military officials say two u.s. troops are among those killed in a suicide bombing in afghanistan. >> the attack this morning in a crowded market, monica villa

plea czar has more. >> reporter: police say the bomber rode a motor bicycle into a crowded vegetable market killing at least ten people. u.s. troops were reportedly having tea with the police commander minutes before the attack. the assaults on foreign troops are on the rise. nato says it's unclear who's behind them buttager has been -- but anger has been building after a u.s. soldier allegedly killed u.s. civilians and u.s. troops mistakenly burned korans. >> in many cases there were signs and symptoms that could have been seen. >> reporter: two days ago, a twin blast shook a street market in northern afghanistan. u.s. led nato forces are training the afghan military and police hoping they'll be ready to take over security in 2014. monica villamizar, cbs news.

>> that includes at least 54 americans killed in afghanistan. a united nations team is expected to arrive in syria later today. their arrival comes hours after the syrian military resumed its shelling of the city of homs. it adds to growing skepticism over the pledge to abide by its truce starting next week. president assad promised to pull back government forces by april 10th. here's a look at other things making news now. the suspect in the school shooting in oakland, california faced a judge for the first time yesterday. one goh is facing several charges including seven counts of murder and he could face the death penalty. investigators say goh went on a shooting rampage. the jet blue pilot who had a mid-flight meltdown will have a psychiatric exam to see if he's competent to stand trial. a judge ordered the test for

clayton osbon after prosecutors filed a motion starting the captain may have a mental disease. osbon is charged with interfering with a flight crew during a new york to las vegas trip. the copilot made an emergency landing in texas last week after passengers tackled osbon when he started acting incoherently. five former new orleans' police are getting prison time for deadly shootings on a bridge physical lowing hurricane katrina -- following hurricane katrina. the police shot six people two of them were killed and then they conspired to cover everything up. the cops will get between six and 65 years from prison. this case is considered a centerpiece of the federal government's effort to clean up the troubled new orleans police department. hundreds of families in suburban dallas are living in shelters after tornadoes tore across parts of texas. the twisters tore off roofs, sucked up and tossed tractor- trailers, caused untold damage but did not claim a single life. the national weather service says as many as 13 tornadoes

president obama is expected to sign the jobs act into law this afternoon. during a ceremony at the white house. it's supposed to make it easier for start-up businesses to find funding. critics say it gets it of some regulations which are supposed to protect investors, and of course this comes a day after the president signed the stock act into law. that legislation prevents members of congress or their staffers from using insider information to make stock deals. the bill was passed with bipartisan support after "60 minutes" report made the practice known to the entire country. yahoo laying off 2,000 employees or 14% of the work force. it's the sixth mass layoff at yahoo in four years. these cuts expected to save the struggling internet company about $375 million a year.

>> yeah, wore bringing in a little bit of sunshine when we come in here into the studio but we are looking at 8:00er temperatures particularity stepping out this morning. we're dipping down into the 40s outside the beltway. 50s noise the beltway. so yes a little bit of a cool start but with that sunshine i think you will like the way things ease on up later on this afternoon. forecast today is going to take us on the sunny side most definitely but by the time we get to the 9:00 hour you should see the temperatures push out of the 40s and into those middle range and even pushing upper 50s by the lunch break. the afternoon will feature more sunshine even still late in the day, taking many of us near 60. i think near reagan national airport we should hit about 62. some of the southern locations could even make it to about 64. 65 degrees the further you go on down towards the south. but winds today predominantly out of the north and the northeast and that's going to be the trend over the next couple of days. so we're not going to see those outrageously warm temperatures for anytime soon. satellite and radar has been quiet for our region at least around washington, baltimore

and in toward philadelphia. high pressure is starting to settle in. that's going to be working in our favor. it's going to help steer some of these showers and storms you see on the radar down past the south and we could get some showers through richmond and norfolk, newport news and north and south carolina. for us though for the short- term be prepared for the chilly start. cool temperatures already about 49 atageton. 46 out toward restton and you get the picture. it will be very, very cool for the next couple of hours, then, as we go in toward the later portions of day we'll see the winds out of the northeast continue a little bit brissic by late afternoon but at least conditions will be dry for today. our michael & son carte camera, 52 degrees at reagan national airport. futurecast agrees with the high pressure settling in and mainly a little bit of morning cloud cover and then midday and late day plenty of sunshine streaming on through. even into friday and saturday, high pressure will dominate though a dry forecast for the short-term and looking good for

the easter sunday forecast as well. the overall picture is not too bad for us for the next few. in fact i think we're going to see temperatures hovering right around the 60-degree mark as we head in toward the next couple of days. the day's high should feature lower 60s, we're talking close to 61 degrees for arlington and we should see about 62 north of the beltway. and even start to hit those 60s or middle range 60s down toward the south. 75 for washington. that should be 62 actually. 62 degrees today. very pleasant. we're looking at a breezy conditions with friday and with the north winds tomorrow i think our temperatures are going to be a little bit lower. city center should make it to 60 tomorrow but some of us are going to stay into too 50s and then -- into the 50s and then saturday and easter sunday it will get an improvement back into the middling and even pushing the upper 6s by sunday afternoon. looking pretty good with next week. monday features a mix of sun and clouds overnight lows are going to get a little bit warmer for us. as we pull out of the 40s and

back into 50s. but be prepared we're going to get another cool swing by the end of next week. monika? thank you so much olga. it's cool this morning but you know what? things looking pretty good out on the roadways. we had a couple of tough situations yesterday. let's hope that doesn't happen today. we're used to it being lighter than normal this week with spring break in most of the area. right now check out the vw parkway and route 50 inside the beltway. no problems through cheverly heading in to the northeast corridor. all lanes are open. 50 is looking great out of the annapolis as well. the prince george's county beltway, that stretch between college park and oxon hill. everything fine. we'll take a live look outside, first of all, here's 270. coming south from father hurley boulevard doing fine down to the point where the lanes divide. there had been overnight construction in urbanna and that should be clearing shortly as well. back to the maps this time southern maryland looking great on route 4, route 5, route 301. no problems on route 210 out of accokeek and route 4 and pennsylvania -- this is the

and also the house select committee said that there was a probable conspiracy. >> reporter: a convict, james earl ray was convicted in the assassination and has since died. >> the family of dr. martin luther king jr. decided that james earl ray was not responsible for the death and that the testing of the rifle in the '90s showed that the fatal bullet didn't come from that gun. that was supposedly the one used by ray in the case. >> reporter: visitors to dr. king's memorial on the mall on whether the records should be released -- >> we always believed there's been some kind of conspiracy and that's been tricked to his death -- attributed to his death and it's time for full record of release for all things that pertain to his life. >> we're intelligent people. just almost impossible for it to be just one person. so yeah i do think there's a bit of a conspiracy. >> even if they show us no smoking gun we should own our own history and i think it's important forus to take that history back from the national

security state and know what the government was doing. >> reporter: gary nurenberg, 9news now. >> gary says that members of both the house and senate have said they'll introduce bills which would expedite the release of the king records but congress hasn't yet acted. there are certain foods that can help men avoid the devastation of parkinson's disease. there's a new study out that shows foods rich in things called flavonoisd protect. they include wine. they studied thousands of mine on this and they found the men who ate those were 40% less likely to develop parkinson's. also new discoveries about the genetic links to autism. a study at yale university looked at families with a single autistic child. in about 15% of the families the autism was socialed with spontaneous genetic mutations.
