6:00 am
you why in that seven day forecast. overall though it looks like our temperatures for today are going to be pretty good. highs are going to make it into the lower range 60s in and around the region. we could see some of those little warmer temperatures down toward our south but overall, it's going to be fairly cool for today. north winds take over tomorrow. we're going to ramp up the winds tomorrow afternoon and that's going to hold us into the upper 50s for some, lower 6s for others -- 6s for others. monika? thank you so much olga. good morning everybody. the beltway's looking great all around town there. there are no big problems to report. we're going to go into southern maryland where there's an accident down in charles county. it's on billingsley road west of route 229 in bensville. be aware of that. otherwise a little further north out of brandy wine. route 5 looks great. no problems on route 210 out of accokeek heading for oxon hill. the live look at the beltway at route 4 pennsylvania looking great near andrews air force base. a good indication of the belt way in prince george's county. back to the maps this time to
6:01 am
the north side of town. all of the major cordones from the north to the beltway look great. the beltway is lighter than normal from college park into silver spring. i'm happy to say. and i'll step out and take a live look from sky 9 at 270 as you head in here from gaithersburg down to the point where the lanes divide. you can see that the traffic is moving well this morning. coming up in my next report, we'll take a look into virginia at 6:14. back to you mike and andrea. thank you monika. when you think of big time college sports, you probably don't think of howard university. but the school has found itself in what could be a big time scandal. >> it's taking some of its student-athletes off the field as part of an internal investigation. ing the asking is live at -- delia goncalves is live at howard. >> reporter: good morning mike. andrea. you know this is a complicated story and still lots of unanswered questions at this point. you had mentioned that howard is not a big time sports school. it certainly isn't. they compete on the division i level but not successfully. for instance the football team
6:02 am
only had two winning seasons in the past 13 years but this controversy no doubt put a spotlight on the athletics here at howard university. yesterday a school spokesperson released a statement describing the suspension as quote a self- imposed action. we don't know how how many students are involved. according to the "washington post" the violations are linked to the textbook system where student-athletes were allegedly pocketing the extra scholarship money. >> that's a pretty big deal to penalize every sports team at a university. >> we're not good anyways so i don't think the community will care but it really will detriment people who are looking to come to our school. >> i think student registration will go down. >> i don't really know the extent of the allegations of what's going on. but i'd say that it's terrible. it's a lot of students who are here for sports. >> reporter: now the teams we're told are still playing. in fact the men's tennis team has a game at navy a little
6:03 am
later today. this though is not the first time the athletic program has come under fire here at howard university. coming up at 6:30 we're going to have a little bit of their troubled past with ncaa violations, we'll have more on that at 6:30. back to you mike. >> all right, delia goncalves live at howard university this morning. the attorney for george zimmerman is blaming trayvon martin for his own death. martin was the 17-year-old black teenager killed by the hispanic neighborhood watchman in florida. the attorney says this was not a case of racial profiling. >> the reason that trayvon martin is dead is not because he was black or because he wore a hoodie or because he was walking in the rain. it's because that 6'3" young man made a terrible decision and a bad judgment and he decided to smack somebody in the face and jump on them and in doing that put him in reasonable fear for his safety. you're going to find there was a dispute as to what happened with the gun. he was beautiful entitled to defend himself and that's why
6:04 am
trayvon martin is dead. not because of racial profiling. >> now zimmerman claims that self-defense in the florida's stand your ground law. the department of justice is investigating the case. the national parks service wants to restore the grass at mcpherson square northwest. it isn't sure how it's going to do it. that square has been home to occupy protestors since last year and most of the campers were cleared out in nebraska. the grass -- february. the glass on the square is damaged. you can see it every time you drive by. it's working with the protestors to get that done without evicting them. us is 6:04 and we're watching your money and more of your money is going into the gas tank. i know mine is. fresh numbers out from triple a fuel gauge report regular grade gas in the d.c. metro area now averages $4.05 a gallon. that's up a penny from just yesterday and up 29 centss from a month ago. nationwide the average is up to $3.94 a gallon. but there are a few things you
6:05 am
can do to bring down those gas costs and jessica doyle is back with some good advice. >> don't pay $4.20 like i did last night for gasoline. i had no choice because -- i was running out of gas but we're going to start with loyalty to a gas station because it really can pay. now if you use a specific brand a lot because it's convenient for your lifestyle, maybe it's the gas station on corner by your house. consider signing up for the loyalty program. now for example we're going to take a look at the bp visa card. it offers a 5% rebate on all gas purchased at bp stations and for the first 60 days you can earn 25 cents off per gallon rebate for every $100 many purchases on the credit card in general. shell and exxon mobil offer similar deals. staying with the idea of credit card rewards, another option is to get a rewards card for all gas stations, for example the discover open road card offers
6:06 am
$10 cashback bonuses on each of the first five purchases of gasoline of $25 or more within the first three months of opening the card. also get 2% back on all gas station purchases. forbes reports that a competing card to think about is the chase freedom card. it offers 5% cashback on the first $1,500 spent on travel and gas during the summer months. a couple other ideas to keep in mind here, keep crash in your wallet because many gas stations will actually give you a pretty big discount for paying cash. up to 10 cents a gallon fear. you the drive a few blocks off the highway you can save 20- cents a gallon really easily. finally the single easiest way to save money. filling up is slow down. your typical sedan becomes a gas hog the faster you go. cnn money reports every ten miles you drive over 60 is like the price of gasoline going up 54 cents a gallon. and that's based on a sedan.
6:07 am
we're not even talking suvs here. >> we're talking scary with the suv. and you told us before not just slowing down but making sure the tires are inflated properly. >> keep your windows up. that's a drag on the car. it doesn't save you gas when you turn on the air- conditioning. you know keep the windows up. and make sure the trunk doesn't have extra load in the back. those are big things that can make a difference. >> save some money by knowing the cheapest places to fill up. just go to wusa9.com and we'll help you out. click on features, then pump patrol. learn which gas stations where you live have the lowest prices. mike? it really does make a difference. thanks guys, wouldn't you love it if the beltway in maryland got a few lanes wider? it sure won't be cheap. there's a new report that finds adding lanes to the beltway is one of the top priorities in the state. the price tag however $5.8 billion. the report from the group trip says easing the trip around the free state is essential for the
6:08 am
state's economy. >> we found that the state's transportation system remains the backbone of the state's economy. and as the state looks into the future, it's going to be very critical to support a high quality of life here in maryland that the state needs to provide a well-maintained and efficient transportation system. >> and also on the list, needed in transportation improvements adding lanes to interstate 270, rebuilding the nice bridge on route 301 and building a purple line between bethesda and new car rollton. it is 67:08. cool schools doesn't take a spring break. >> that's right, that's because students can always stay connected to their school. >> good morning everybody. shout out to everybody who following us right now. >> in eight minutes see how they choose students to stay in touch with their assistant principal in 140 characters or less. >> another great sunny day with highs in 60s, up next a look ahead to the holiday weekend. you're watching 9news now.
