african-american teenager was killed by the hispanic neighborhood watchman in florida. zimmerman's attorney says this was not a case of racial profiling. >> the reason that trayvon martin is dead is not because he was black or because he wore a hoodie or because he was walking in the rain. it's because that 6'3" young man made a terrible decision and a bad judgment and he decide to smack somebody in the face and break their nose. jump on them and smack their head into the ground and in doing that put him in reasonable fear for his safety. you're going to find there was a dispute as to what happened with the gun. he was absolutely entitled to defend himself and that's why trayvon martin is dead. not because of racial profiling. >> zimmerman claims self- defense under florida's stand your ground law. the department of justice is investigating. well, today lawyers for jerry sandusky temporarily withdrew his motion to have 52 child sex abuse charged

12:10 pm
all right, i'm one-on-one with george lowe, issues of ethics made headlines in the district for the past year, still, the voters decided to go with the incumbent on the d.c. city council. george lowe is the ceo of amalgamated capital and he has analysis of the voting. not only in the washington, d.c. but in maryland. so were there any surprises to you?
12:11 pm
no surprises in you know the "washington post" said get rid of the incumbents, get rid of the incumbents and the voters said no, no, we're happy. >> jc, it's a pleasure to be with you again. >> thank you. >> if you sit down and take a look at the variety of different reasons that the number of the incumbents -- all of them were returned. i guess the only race that's still outstanding somewhat is biddle and orange. but if you take a look at for example council member berry, the people in ward 8 have supported him for 30 plus years and so the 73% that he has there was no surprise. browser who won with 66% again, not any real surprise and she's done an amazing job representing the folks of ward 4. that -- yvette alexander was probably one we were watching a little closer as we know they came out and endorsed tom brown one of her opponents. but -- >> yes. >> council member alexander did
12:12 pm
an amazing job and turned out the vote. respectfully if you really take look though, we actually had the voter turnout was one of the lowest in the city's history. >> it was and that happens in the district of columbia. for primaries. why is that? >> you know, this year, i think it was a little more extraordinary as it has been in the past year. especially when you factor in that it was also a presidential primary. >> yeah. >> respectfully, even president obama receives 41,000 votes and altogether we had about 50,000 folks turn out. delegate gordon received 48,000 votes. >> uh-huh. >> but again as you compare it to 2010 it was half of the folks that turned out. and so there's a real question is there just apathy? was it because the primary is now been moved up by five months? to april? and folks just weren't really following it. i think it's a lot of really different reasons that attribute to it some of which you have to think about there's
12:13 pm
an apathetic vote out there. >> that is too bad. it is. because it wasn't raining and it's great weather. we've all complain asked said it was raining but anyhow we're going to be following the vincent orange race closely because it was very, very tight as soon as we get final numbers we will bring that to you. george, thank you for joining us. come back and see me again. we're going to have the forecast from olga in just a moment. every day potentially harmful germs

pairs of women's or men's shoes. that's a 55% discount on the normal price. if you have an offer you've seen or if you're a local merchant with a deal for our viewers, i'd love to hear from you on facebook. i'm jessica doyle, 9news now. 44 years have passed since dr. martin luther king jr. was shot and killed in memphis. and to this day the official records of the investigation remain sealed. also, records of how the government dealt with dr. king's growing popularity are also looked up. gary nurenberg reports there's a movement underway to get those files released. >> reporter: half a lifetime later the images still haunt. in the 1970s a house committee of assassinations ordered the files sealed for 50 years. >> there are also federal agency files, state and local files and police files, court sealed files and even some international files that we think would be important to release on the life and death of dr. king. >> reporter: john judge runs the coalition on political assassinations.
12:18 pm
>> i think no question the government played role in it and also -- a role in it and also the house select committee said there was a probable conspiracy. >> reporter: a convict james earl ray was convicted in the assassination and has since died. >> the family of dr. martin luther king jr. decided that james earl ray was not responsible for the death and that the testing of the rifle in the '90s showed the fatal bullet didn't come from that gun that was supposedly the one used by ray in the case. >> reporter: visitors to dr. king's memorial on the mall on whether the records should be released -- >> we always believed there's been some kind of conspiracy that's contributed to his death and it's time for full record of release for all things that pertain to his life. >> we're intelligent people. it's almost impossible to be just one person and i think there's a bit of conspiracy. >> even if they show us no smoking gun, we should own our own history and i think that it's important for us to -- to
12:19 pm
take that history back from the national security state and know what the government was doing and what it was thinking about dr. king. >> reporter: gary nuremberg, 9news now. >> members of the house and senate have said they will introduce bills which would expedite the release of the king records. but congress hasn't acted yet. olga is here with us today with the forecast. a little bill cooler than yesterday. >> yes, we definitely saw that chill early on this morning. we had some cloud cover today as well. took a while for the clouds to really break up and just now i would say over the last two hours we've seen a little bit of bump in our current temperatures. but it's a slow rise. by late afternoon, though, i think you're going to see it pretty comfortable on the drive time home. the forecast for today at least for the almanac up into the 70s yesterday. we're not going to see anything near that for today. mainly because of our north and our northeast winds into the afternoon. overall though our day planner is not too bad. the sunshine is going to win out by late afternoon i think most of us will get out of the 50s and push the upper 50s
12:20 pm
through the noontime hour and should settle into the lower 60s by later on this afternoon. even by 5:00 with a sunshine still up, sun still up that is, we'll be into the lower 60s but if you're going to be out after dark have your jacket again. because although you have it off during midday you will want it when we get back to 7:00 and 9:00 when temperatures move back down into the middle range and even into th 40s later on tonight. forecast for today is going to keep us in the clear. we've seen as i mentioned a little bit of the high cloud cover here. but high pressure is going to have start so set -- start to settle on in. that's steering the showers and storms down to the south. however we have some cool temperatures, 56 now at reagan national. quite an improvement and still holding on the 52 above the maryland pennsylvania line and even getting into the 50s down across the south and toward the east. overall though, today it is the northwest winds calm to light that will keep us fairly cool with some cloud cover sticking around through midday and then again late afternoon we'll
12:21 pm
clear it up. futurecast agrees, mainly clear skies as we head in toward the evening hours. i would say by your drive time home you'll need the sunglasses out once again and toward the afternoon and evening hours looking pretty good overnight tonight. we're down into the 30s and 40s early on your saturday morning. but take a look at saturday, midday and afternoon. nothing but sunshine and that's going to help boost our temperatures tomorrow. a little bit of an improvement over what we've seen so far for today. so in all though, highs will make it to the middle range 60s. we'll see some upper 50s hold on into the afternoon for a few of the locations where the sun doesn't breakthrough but the lows overnight tonight are quite chilly. dealt see the opportunity to have some basically cooler temperatures into the early morning hours. we will have the opportunity to see our seven day forecast and it does feature the possibility of having the showers and thunderstorms move back in but that won't be until later on in our extended forecast. for the short-term though look
12:22 pm
forward to a great weekend ahead as the temperatures stay in the 60s. >> well, joining me right now it is pet line thursday and that means we have a couple of guests here in the studio including faith who is from the prince george's county spca. and who do we have with us here today? relax. >> this is diesel. diesel is -- a 1 -- a little more than 1-year-old rottie. he's a mix of a rottie and something very, very cute. he's sort of hanging in there. you have go debt -- there you go. what a cute face. >> still looking for a happy home. >> he's looking for a forever home. >> okay, is he house trained? >> he is housebroken and he is crate trained and she's a very activity -- he's a very active dog because he's still very young and he does like cookies. he would be best in a family that has i think another young active dog and get his -- keep
12:23 pm
his exercise routine up. >> what about the adoption process? i know that a lot of folks will fall in love with diesel here, what do they have to do if they want to open their home to diesel or another pet? >> to the website, which is -- it's basically to let us know that they're interested. diesel and all the other dogs that we have are at adoption shows. and the next one's coming up on the 14th. >> you can get more information on adopting a pet like diesel or any other at our website. wusa9.com. 9news now will continue in just a moment.
12:27 pm
april is the month of the military child. and that's why first lady michelle obama and first dog bo visited fisher house in rockville yesterday. fisher house provides the comforts of home for military families while their loved ones get treatment at walter reed medical center. >> our military families are, our troops, you all deserve this kind of high level treatment. >> first lady also brought easter treats for families and she joined them for craft activities. it was a nice day. >> uh-huh. >> all right, another look at your seven day? >> well, the forecast is not too bad. we are warming up today. we're going to be pretty good
12:28 pm
