will at some point share that record setting $656 million jackpot. so far, however, not one of the winners has come forward. but that's not stopping the ongoing drama in maryland about who or who may not have that winning ticket. our scott bloom was in baltimore today when they held their own press conference. this story just goes on and on, scott? >> reporter: well i'll tell you what, the lottery director here called a press conference today because he is truly worried that there might be a ticket out there and they don't even know it with all the stories that have been out in the media. he is concerned that somebody has decided that someone else won and that's what he is talking about this afternoon. >> they have to go up to the window. >> reporter: it's been five days with no confirmed winner and lots of rumors. a haitian immigrant that claims she won, but can't get her story straight. a man with a criminal record of falsifying documents, who

showedded off what looked like a winning ticket and then retracted and claimed it was all a practical joke. >> it is important to us that in all of the information that's out there in the media that people not be mistaken in thinking that the ticket is claimed only to have the legitimate ticketholder discard their ticket. that would truly be a tragedy in this circumstance. >> it's a winning machine. >> this is the single largest jackpot in the history of the world, $656 million. and you take that together with the fact that sunday was april fool's day. no shortage of photoshopped winning lottery tickets on facebook and twitter pages. to be clear, no one has approached the maryland lottery to claim this ticket. we have not heard from anyone claiming that they have the ticket and we have not heard from a representative claiming that they are representing the

winner of the ticket. >> reporter: the advice? >> since no one has approached us, we would encourage people to look at their tickets very closely and to make sure that especially if you purchased a ticket on that 7-eleven in baltimore county. >> that's right. telling people to check and recheck tickets because he is concerned that there might be a winner who doesn't know it. on the other hand, he says he is not surprised that it has taken this long and that nobody has emerged with $218.6 million at stake just for maryland's share. he says anybody would be crazy to walk in here without a lawyer, a financial advisor, and a financial plan and that does take time to get to the. he does remind us that in the other two states where there are winners with the share, that kansas and illinois, no winner has stepped forward either. so the waiting game continues here in maryland. and despite the concerns about all the wacky stories out there. reporting live in baltimore, scott broom, 9news now.

"and mayor vincent gray issued a statement saying there's no room in this wonderfully diversed city for comments that discourage anyone on the basis of rape, ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. now, he says that these remarks are being distorting. some encouraging news about the job markets tonight. the number of americans that are applying for unemployment fell to a four-year low last week. analysts are predicting that

tomorrow's job report, they will show a fourth straight month of strong hiring. and the news will come on the same day that the president took measures to try to create more jobs, without adding to the deficit. we have more on the jobs spill. >> it is now law. >> reporter: the bill passed with the bipartisan support in congress is designed to help the small businesses go public and find investors. >> for start ups and small businesses, this bill is a potential game changer. right now you can only turn to a limited group of investors. >> what this bill does is that it provides a real shot in the arm to entrepreneurs, small businessmen and women. and it removes the red tape, allows the small businesses and easier time to go about starting up as well as retaining and creating jobs. >> reporter: despite support from both sides of the aisle. the jobs act is not without

controversy. relaxing the securities and the exchange communications, put into place a decade ago after hundreds of families lost their life savings in the scandal. critics are worried that provisions in the jobs act could open up the door to investor fraud. groups like the aarp oppose the bill. because they will be listing the advertising banned that has protected older and more susceptible investors from being taken in on get-rich quick scam. >> the websites where folks will go to fund all these start- ups in small businesses, they will be subject to rigorous oversight. >> reporter: the fcc has severamonths to handle regulations. i'm reporting. well, the former assistant penn state football coach was in court this morning. sandusky's lawyer, one of the child sex abuse charges against his client dropped because the evidence was illegally obtained. but he quickly withdrew thames after realize -- withdrew that order after realizing that

everything was in order. it's designed to keep sandusky from facing his accusers. a judge canceled the arraignment for the jet blue pilot who had an apparent meltdown in mid flight. this after the prosecutors said that they will be suspecting that he may have some sort of mental problem that would make him incompetent to stand trial. instead of today's hearing, they ordered that he be evaluated in the prison hospital. passengers will hope to restrain the problem after running through the aisles screaming about terrorism. get the community back to normal. that will be the message from the texas governor, rick perry this morning or this evening, rather. he held a news conference in lancaster earlier today after getting a chance to see all the damage for you and from tuesday. now, despite widespread devastation, the governor says that there will be a lot to be thankful for. >> witnessing this type of disaster always brings to your

mind how quickly these events can occur. but we do need to, you know, thank the lord that it could have been worse. >> at least three tornadoes, they violently spawned through the dallas/ft. worth area on tuesday, collapsing roofs, ripping down power lines, and tossing trailers in the air. all right, from that severe weather there to a freeze alert in our area. what's going on? >> reporter: well right now we've got the sunshining on through and also the temperatures around the lower 60s. but we do have a freeze warning in effect. this will be starting late tonight until tomorrow morning. it includes frederick county, clark county. and winchester as well. what this means, you need to bring in your pets overnight and also cover the sensitive plants. temperatures will drop around to the freezing mark in the northwestern suburbs. right now it does feel pretty nice for this time of the year. 60 downtown. mid-50s for martinsburg. fredericksburg to the south,

a moment of silence today to honor the 29 men who lost their lives in that west virginia mine disaster. it was two years ago today that a methane and coal fuel blast killed the miners inside the upper big branch mine. wreath laying ceremonies will be planned as well as the county courthouse. the new owner has announced that e he will permanently seal off that mine. an elderly woman is truly fighting for her life tonight after the early morning house fire. >> they were able to rescue three people from that home. and as we have shown you, investigators believe that it will all begin with just one single cigarette. >> reporter: as you can see, the fire nearly destroyed thissed old home. the firefighters, they say that flames, they started in the second floor bedroom. >> we saw the flames coming out of the building. it was very dark. >> reporter: the firefighters rushed to the scene in six minutes had the fire knocked

out in 20 and still, they were trapped inside and they suffered significant smoke inhalation. >> the two men and their mother who live in this house, you know, they were, well, they got out of the house. >> we hope and pray that they will be okay. >> but one resident was closest to the fire on the second floor. that victim was unconscious. they performed cpr at the scene, rushing the victim. >> the person was not in the bedroom. but there was a lot of smoke up there so you can imagine the condition. >> she is a lovely former middle school, junior high school in my days, history teacher. >> i have no idea what the cause was. not many people smoke, you know. maybe these people did. i have no idea. >> reporter: but we ared told that one of the adult sons does smoke. firefighters say that the old brick house prevented this fire from getting any worse. >> my concern is their health. you know, their health.

and that they will be fine. >> reporter: the official cause of the fire is still under investigation. in northwest, 9news now. >> and those two adult sons will be expected to be okay. but their elderly mom is listed in serious condition at the washington hospital center. lots of events are planned this year to mark 150 years since the civil war. the national park service, they would like to help you learn more about those. so today, they launched a new website with a guide to more than 1,700 sites around the country related to the conflict. you can also follow the adventures of the fictional correspondents. we've got a link to it all on our website at wusa9.com. after a gap of about four months, four buses are back operating on the national mall. you might remember the blue tour buses put the brakes on at the end of last year. today, another company called open top sightseeing started running double decker buses. the group's route will include more than two dozen stops

including the capital, the smithsonian museum and the major memorials. good news for them there. nasa is getting ready for the space shuttle survivals. speaking of tourist attractions. and sky 9 captured these pictures of the two training jets that were flying over our city today. they were flying about 1,500 above the town to take some pictures. that space shuttle is being donated, moved into the air and space plea -- museum on april 19. i can hardly wait. in the meantime they are being honored tonight. and the telescope institute named one of the stellar experiences after the senator. the maryland democrat supported the hubble telescope television when they were allowing it to go dark. >> when i was growing in baltimore, of course i wanted

f the absolute smallest town in the country is now on the block for the highest bidder. it's in the southeastern part of wyoming. the population is just one person. don salmon is unofficially the mayor. i guess that he is also the dogcatcher and everything else. but he will step aside to whomever wins today's auction. that winner will become the proud owner of one gas station, one convenience store, a schoolhouse, a cabin, a garage, a three bedroom house. and 10 acres. the bidding started at $100,000. no word on whether or not anyone was bidding. and now, you have probably seen some of those images floating around on the internet. about the tiny little arms. but now the scientists think that they have learned something new. and that will be the small arm dinosaur. that they have identified a fossil at one of the relatives area, but they set that down here. and now that would contradict most of the animals with the

we've got breaking news for you right now. we are monitoring a memorial bridge here by the arlington national cemetery and where the police chase, they ended with the suspect crashing. this all started here where the merchandise was stolen from the store. the suspect pulled off here to then get back. so now it will be a chase that took off or a chase ensued by the police officers here on the ground and the helicopter for you. and the suspect, they lead them all the way to memorial circle

in arlington before losing control of their vehicle. an update on the colleges here that shut their doors in northern virginia this week. and tonight, claims of falsifying the records, illegal payments, and administrators that could not be trusted all from the department of transportation. the college, with three campuses in northern virginia, they shut down yesterday without warning, leaving hundreds of students and staff in the dark. we have been digging into the alsos with more from outside the college headquarters in articlington. >> well, what these administrators have been accused of doing is failing to distribute hundreds of thousands of dollars in financial aid to students. then lying about it repeatedly to the federal government.

now that the school does not exist. >> i think that it will here for them. we want answers, we're not getting anything. >> they will be paying tens of thousands of dollars in tuition. taking out loans, college credits. and now all of it will be up in smoke. >> this is a profit institution. sadly it is something that has gotten the profit to close the doors. >> reporter: the students and staff say that it will be jeff moore. the president and ceo of act college. in a letter, two more that the department of education will say that they helped themselves to the student's financial aid fund without the student's knowledge or the consent.

struggles with paying for health care. a new study published says that the americans, they will be going to the doctor less and cutting back on prescriptions. they found that the number of the prescriptions dropped about 1.1% last year and doctor

visits, they fell about 4.7%. trips to the emergency room though, they will take on that trend. they found americans, they went to the e.r. about 7.4% more last year. and the author suggests that the increases are linked to people losing their health insurance because of long-term unemployment. as the number of children with autism rises in the united states, so do the number of autistic adults that will need services. many end up in group homes. as we report for you, the weight for those lists are growing. he is preparing breakfast at this group's home. >> it feels happy to be with my friends. >> reporter: the 49-year-old lives with six other autistic adults. and they all have responsibilities, like helping with meals, doing laundry, and cleaning up. >> we try to have people living in situations when they are with their peers with similar levels of functioning to communicate with each other. >> reporter: even the services

u.s., estimated that one out of 59 children in that state have autism. well burgerring king is now apologizing to mary j. blige and her fan for releasing a commercial that some say was out of line. it featured blige singing about burger king's new fried chicken snack wrap. it went viral the minute it was released and people said that it played on stereotype of the black community. burger king pulled that ad on tuesday saying it was not finished with a music rights issue. and blige understands why people are upset and that the ad didn't come across as planned. wellspringfield, virginia supervisor is recovering tonight after successful open heart surgery. now, doctors at fairfax institute performed that procedure early this morning. weed told you about that surgery earlier this month. they determined that they needed it because they needed to correct the abnormal heart

all those good things for the first time in eight seasons, the washington nationals, they will open up the season with a lot of buzz and a lot of optimism. america's home team, they could actually be a post season contender this year thanks to a deep roster of talent, which includes the return of their young views. they will be making the first ever opening day start. he put in seven areas here against them. five hits, five strikeouts, one run, seven innings, but they did not give you much run support until then. thanks to ten strikeouts by the chicago starter. but hey, it would not be a nats game without a late rally. ian desmond singled in the go ahead run at the top of the 9th and the nats win the opening day, undefeated, 2-1. for the last four seasons the washington capitals have been the southeast division champs. right now they will sit at four points behind the first place. and they have set up a monster of a game tonight at the
