controversial comments. he issued a sort of an apology to asian owned businesses in ward 8. >> this is the latest instance of the former mayor trying to explain away something he said. delia goncalves live in southeast with the story. outside would be of those businesses, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, you know you guys said it. sort of an apology. he essentially said i'm sorry but i'm making a point and the point is that places like king city here on mlk avenue that have bars on the windows and that have bulletproof grass at the counters are actually hurting the community here in ward 8. that's what he meant. here's what he said -- >> reporter: here's what the 76- year-old council member had to say for himself in an interview with our gary nurenberg.

>> don't hire anybody. from the community. don't participate in the community. and i apologize to asian community for anything i said that was harmful, hurtful. but my record is impeccable. i have fought all of my life against discrimination. >> mr. barry, how would overreacted if an elected -- you have reacted if an elected official said we have to do something about these african- americans coming into our community selling shoddy products, they're got to go? what would you have said? >> i would have said if it's somebody that hasn't had a good record on it. i would have said get out of here. >> reporter: great question by our gary nuremberg and you heard what he says. if you don't have a record, then get out of here. but you listen, no one can deny that marion barry has an outstanding civil rights record here in the district of columbia. but many say that's why he should have known better. we'll have more reaction from

>> williams was caught on tape by a filmmaker who's a fan of the saints who the saints allowed in the locker room and williams knew he was being taped. williams was with the saints after serving as an assistant coach with the redskins. his time here remains under investigation. lawmakers in richmond have a new deal on a budget. $85billion over the next two years and the issue holding it up before was an effort to keep the tolls down on the dulles toll road. governor bob mcdonnell wants $150 million in state money to go to the metro extinction to dulles and that would have kept the tolls from skyrocketing. but house negotiators rejected that plan. the final vote on the budget is expected april 17th. well, virginia will give more than $1 million to thomas haynesworth. he's the man who spent 27 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. he was released from prison last spring officially cleared by dna evidence in september. governor mcdonnell called the compensation quote morally

right. he also received an official apology. jessica doyle is watching your money. and your jobs. >> talking unemployment numbers now for march. they come out this morning. >> that's right. we're looking for some good news here from ton employment report of course -- the unemployment report. traders will still be watching and this is what's expected. the fourth month in a row of big job gains. for march economists are thinking businesses added around 203,000 employees give or take a few thousand. that's actually down a touch from february. the unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 8.3%. this economic report from the labor department comes it a day after washington focused on the health of the job market. that measure had broad bipartisan support with backers saying it will help with job creation. it's meant to help companies raise money from investors allowing them to use the internet to raise small dollar investments and let private

companies go public without some sec regulations and disclosure requirements. >> for start-ups and small businesses this bill in a potential gamer -- is a potential game changer. right now you can only turn to a limited group of investors including banks and wealthy individuals to get funding. laws that are nearly eight decades old make it impossible for ohs to invest -- others to invest. but a lot's changes in 80 years. and it's time our laws did as well. >> now there are some worries about this bill. crickets are saying the by -- critics are saying the bill roms back -- rolls back the protection to the great depression and that could potentially lead to fraud or abuse. they're going to have to be on the lookout for that. >> anything that can help jobs on the upside too. it depends if it is going to help. we'll see. >> a lot obviously people saying loosening up on the regulations may be the answer. >> yeah. the return of streetcars to the district is closer to

i'm meteorologist olga breese. we have clear skies this morning. cool conditions temperatures in the 40s. we'll move into the 50s and top out right around 60 degrees later on today with plenty of sunshine. we're going to take a live hook now from sky 9. wove been telling you about the accident in prince william county here at mini vail road and telegraph road. a medevac helicopter gosselined on the scene of the -- just landed on the scene of the accident right nearby and must have just taken off. in the meantime watch out for police direction at the scene of the accident maybe take cayton hill road or old bridge to route 123. i'll keep you posted at 6:18. back to you mike. as you might guess reaction lately to the trayvon martin case is falling along racial

lines. there's a new poll out that says 51% of blocks think george zimmerman is definitely guilty. while 58% of whites say the guilt is unclear. that's making news this morning at 6:12. the poll by "usa today" and gallup finds 73% of blacks believe zimmerman would have been arrested if trayvon martin was white. 33% of whites agree with that. zimmerman who was hispanic shot and killed trayvon martin last month claiming self-defense. he has not been charged in the case. sentencing today for antonio martinez the maryland man accused of trying to bomb a military recruiting center in caytonsville. martin admitted he wants to wait and jihad against the government. prosecutors want him behind bars for 25 years. so get this -- the town in wyoming is now owned by a group from vietnam. the town population one was sold for $900,000. andrea? in the words of my colleague mike hydeck, this is really cool.

imagine seeing some of the world's greatest works of art and finest museums without ever leaving your computer. that's the motivation behind the google art project. the project is in its second phase one which includes the smithsonian's national portrait gallery. >> we have uploaded about 200 artworks on to the google art projects from the national portrait gallery's collection and there's a wide range of articleworks from historical -- artworks from historical paintings, photographs, prints and drawings to very contemporary images from the last decade. >> you can see images like the landsdown portrait of george washington online and in even greater detail than seeing it in person. i spoke with peter adam check from google. he told me how the idea got off the ground. >> it started at a 20% project from google. spend 20% of their time on a project they're particularly

passionate about in and in this case it was a few googlers who wanted to put more artwork online. >> what began last year with 17 institutions, how many do you have now and what does that mean as far as the size of the collection? >> the first round like you menaced it was 17 museums and nine different countries and about 1 to you works of art. with the next phase up to 151 partners and 40 different countries and more than 30,000 works of art. >> it's not just static pictures too, you feel like you're actually walking through the galleries, how did you accomplish that? what was the technology behind that? >> the museum themselves provide the high resolution image so in 46 different museums now, the same technology that you can use in google maps to do street view we changed the camera made it work so the indoor lighting conditions would work well in the museums. and you can have your own virtual tour. >> i can see what this does for the viewer, someone who can't get to a museum. but what about the museums? are they excited about this and

seeing an increase in foot traffic? >> yes, actually. the more information they put up online the more enticement people have to make a physical visit. >> do you have people now lining up to say put my museum in as part of this? >> we're expecting a few more and the growth from the first rounds has been great. so really it's -- the google art project is a platform for all of these different partners. peter, thank you very much and congratulations. >> the link to the google art project. go to the wusa9.com and remember when you're searching for foreign museums on the list it may be listed by the museum's name in that country's language but they have made some adjusts to the website and -- adjustments to the website and it's easy to navigate. you can put in the artist and country and the language that you speak. >> we trited it together -- tried it together yesterday. >> and speaking of cool your forecast for the morning, here's olga breese in for howard. >> temperatures still dropping even this hour. a lot more locations right now

are in the 40s. upper 30s but yeah we're sliding back down from at least the next hour or so is when we turn the corner. sunrise not just yet. another 30 to 45 minutes or so. but the sunshine is going to help us out. day planner for today is going to be brilliant. not too bad for the midday and latedy but early morning hour only in the 40s and upper middle range and upper 50s by midday and most of us should top out right around 60 degrees for the late afternoon hours. it will be very brisking. we have winds today out of the north and northwest mainly at 10 to 15 miles per hour. however, we will see gusts higher than that. now because of the very cool temperatures this morning, we do have that freeze warning in effect until 9:00 and that covers lot of our counties particularly to the west of d.c. and up across a few northern counties up into central pennsylvania as well. a cool start to the morning but things will again improve with the daytime heating kicking in just a little bit. a couple of hours to get to

that. forecast for today is a very chilly for the morning. mainly the freeze watch expiring at 9:00 and then into the breezy and cool afternoon. it will be brisk and have the jacket nearby but expect it to be nice and brilliant for the holiday weekend. right now our temperatures are still sliding. reagan national airport has been holding into the lower 40s but 30s to gaithersburg to harris -- hagerstown and out to cumberland as well. forecast for today, definitely is going to be on the chilly side as we are feeling like we're near the freezing mark for today. but the day -- the short-term forecast is actually going to look pretty good for us. in all though, the next three days ahead will feature an improvement. bit by bit. today yes a little bit on the cool side but not too bad. very pleasant for the saturday forecast kicking into easter and sunday, 69 pushing 70 degrees in some spots by sunday afternoon. before the cloud cover starts to fill on in. monday's going to be kind of a mixed bag. it should start out on the

sunny side and then monday afternoon, mostly cloudy skies and rain opportunities begin to move on in for tuesday and wednesday. monika? well, crews continue to deal with a very serious accident this morning in prince william county. you're taking a live look right now. it's on telegraph road and mini vail road. a helicopter took off i would say about seven minutes ago from the scene but police are there now investigating and still doing their clean-up. so you want to either follow police direction or use cayton hill or old bridge to route 123 as the alternate route. we'll take a look at a map. right here west of i-95 in prince william county. now 95 is incident-free. no problems to report from dale city into woodbridge and up into springfield. to the north side. no problems on the beltway north of town. this is been great all week long leaving college park into silver spring. a live look outside first of all at the beltway in georgia avenue. this is to prove tow, this is the outer loop into georgia

the beltway and yes very cool start. so sunshine through midday and late day. our day planner will help us warm up as head through midday out of the 40s. most of us top out around 60 degrees, there's the possibility of seeing the brisk windsly baiter on bush -- by later on today. for the fifth spring in a row there will be playoff hockey in washington. >> the capitals have secured a spot in the postseason and even win their fifth straight division title with a win tomorrow and a loss by florida panthers. >> the caps hosting the pathest last night. brooks laich he guaranteed the trip to the postseason. he sort of did. he helped out with his 16th goal of the year. helping his own cause. that put the caps up 3-0. florida fought back though. the caps were able to hold down the panthers d.c. winning 4-2. and around the same time the game ended, everyone learned that the buffalo sabres lost. so the caps guaranteed a spot

in the postseason. ♪ how do you like that celebration outside verizon center after the game sended? a channel 9 viewer sent that in. you can see fans dancing in the streets with the street musicians and we are hoping there will be more celebrating in the weeks to come along 7th street. now the other team that plays at verizon center. not a lot of celebrating with the wizards. tonight they wrap up three games in three nights with a visit to new jersey. last night the wizards took on the pistons in detroit. greg monroe had 18 points and 7 rebounds for the pistons. the wizards lose, it was close 99-94 but no cigar. john wall scored 28 in the loss. the nationals get a day off today. they won their first opening day game since 2008 yesterday in chicago. ian desmond hit an rbi single in the 9th to break a tie. nats beat the cubs 2-1. now hopefully this isn't the last time all year we'll get to say

at temperatures staying in the 40s to middle 50s by noontime and then seeking out a high of 60 degrees later on this afternoon. it is quite cool. feeling like the very low 30s and again that freeze warning in effect our northern and western county unless 9:00 this morning. monika -- counties until 9:00 this morning. machine a? we've had a couple of issues to report around town and the first one is in prince william county on minnieville road at telegraph road. a helicopter was there just 25 minutes ago and now it's just a accident clean-up there over there. so watch out for some continuing police direction. we'll take a look northbound on 95 in springfield. no problems to report as you head to this point on 95 coming up from dale city all the way to the beltway and on to 395 toward the 14th street bridge. it pretty much looks like this off and on with all lanes open. to the maps again be this time to the north side of town.

no problems on the beltway. looking good all around the beltway with no big delays to report with spring break a pretty easy ride for you. other to the southbound side of 270 and great seneca highway as well. route 124. this is fine but there's one accident on the mid county highway at go shop road. apparently an overturned vehicle there. coming up in my next report, another look at the big picture at 6:43. this morning we're hearing more from the attorneys of george zimmerman. he's the man who shot and killed trayvon martin. >> they are talking with "cbs this morning." erica hill joins us live from new york with the preview of what is bound to be a very interesting interview. morning erica. >> yeah, mike and andrea, good morning to you. the attorneys for george zimmerman will be speaking with us this morning. he of course is the neighborhood watch captain as you mentioned who killed trayvon martin. well, they are pushing back against martin's supporters who want zimmerman to face charges. they also say press coverage of the bias is biased -- case is biased against their client. we'll talk to them and what

the money. and their ideas. and manage to succeed in a modest way. and he wants to run them out? the folks who are doing business there have -- has he talked to them about the cost of doing business. >> reporter: in critics say listen if barry's intent is to get the businesses to clean up their act he should speak to them directly instead of lumping them together. >> delia goncalves live in anacostia this morning. we've learned more about what may have led to act college to shut down three campuses in northern virginia this week. the federal department of education says the college failed to distribute hundreds of thousands of dollars in financial aid to its students and then lied about it. so the department of education cut off all financial assistance which led to the closings. students some just weeks from graduating are demanding answers. >> unfortunately, this is a for profit institution.

and sadly, it is come that someone has gotten the profit and closed the doors. >> i'd like to see the money trail. i'd like to know where the money went. >> the department of education says it's working to find schools that will accept a.c.t. college students as well as the college credits they've already earned. the glen burnie, maryland man who told his mother he had the megamillions ticket says he was just joking. the maryland state lottery is tired of the nonsense. >> i am not surprised that we're -- what are we seven days out from the drawing and really only four business days that we haven't heard from anyone yet. one thing there hasn't been in this is a shortage of rumors about who may or may not have won the ticket. we are anxious and wait for them to come forward. but until that time, the ticket has not been claimed. >> and by now you've heard the story about mirlande wilson. she's the baltimore woman who says she won but won't show anyone the ticket. >> i really have the winning

ticket. i could have stayed anonymous but i didn't. jessica doyle is watching your money and our obligations to our veterans. >> . that's right. >> that's right we're talking about the gi bill here. great program. terrific program. it provides college education to veterans and a lot of people are tapping this program since we've had the veterans returning to the u.s. in recent months. here's the problem though. cnn reports the program has been so popular demands has nearly crippled the veteran administration's computer processing system and that is delaying benefits. more than 416,000 vets have enrolled for the spring semester. the va expected the surge of 40,000 iraq vets came home in the last to two months of -- two months of 2011 alone but the demand really exceeded the expectations, the latest version of the gi bill covers almost $18,000 of annual

tuition for private schools and full tuition for public schools. twitter is taking legal action. the social networking site is suing five other kens. it says they build the tools that make it so easy to spam people on twitter and across the internet. more and more folks are reaching for starbucks at the grocery store. revenue is growing well. it's doing well with the k cups and its instant via product and later this year expect to see 60-calorie energy drinks in stores and it's bringing in flash pasteurized juices, very fancy juices. >> what does that mean? >> it's part of the whole juicing wave that's taking place in america. it bought this company -- juicing yeah and it's -- sort of fancy juices. >> i'm wonder if that's going to go. you think starbucks you think coffee. you don't think juice. >> i think they're going to do well because -- there's definitely an uptick right now

welcome back to 9news now. it's 6:43 and 43 chilly degrees but at least the beltway is doing fine all around town with this week of spring break. it's been pretty easy i should say. we were going to start off with the west side. no problems to report as you come in on the dulles toll road. through tysons corner and you're fine on 66 as well all the way in from centreville to

route 50 and 123. we'll take a live look at the beltway. from our sky 9 and this is the beltway right near route 50. so you're good on the west side of town here as you head between basically 66 and springfield i think you should be just fine. we'll take a look back at the maps and this imtoo to the north side -- time to the north -- south side to have town planning to head north from dale city into woodbridge you will be fine. the accident is in its clearing stages. you should be okay there. no problems to report on 395 as you head to the 14th street bridge. and we'll take a look from our m dot cameras as well. if you're planning to head across the american legion bridge between 270 and tweak there are no problems -- tysons corner, there are no problems. 270 looks great from frederick as well. i have a commuter alert before i go. what's in a name? well, plenty on metro's extension to dulles airport. fairfax county asked you what you thought about some of the silver line names. for instance, the station at route 123 just east of the

but at least the sun is starting to get some action in and some improvement for that. the weather planisher going to be very clowe -- planner is going to be very slow to warm up. this afternoon we'll crank up the breezes close to 15 miles per hour with gusts much higher than that. so cool temperatures through the midday hour. i would say right about the lunch break we should be pushing into those middle to upper 50s. most of us top out right around 60 degrees for the 5:00 hour. and then if you're going to be out later on this evening you're going to need the jacket once again as we slip back down into 240s and yes even the 40s for overnight lows tonight. this morning a real problem or at least a cold one for many folks into northern and western suburbs. the freeze warning is up until about 9:00 and vegetation will be at risk for the early morning hours but then sun kicking in things should improve greatly. we're looking at a forecast for today that's going to stay on the cold side for the next few hours. in fact through midday and late day once we get rid of the

freeze warning we'll see pretty good and breezy cool afternoons for the remainder of the day. then a pretty good weekend as we head into saturday and sunday. some good news definitely ahead. right now we're sitting at 43 at reagan national as i said. down into the 30s from hagerstown into gaithersburg and also looking at the 40s down to the south and off toward the east but overall it will be cool for the next few. feeling more like the freezing mark for many of the locations at least at this hour. now the forecast for today is going to feature these north and northeast winds. basically bringing in some of the canadian air, it's very dry. the dew points are low and cranking up the wind this afternoon, very, very mild for us at least for the remainder of the forecast. satellite and radar shows high pressure clearing us out steering these storms down to the south, very good thing for us. meaning that our futurecast forecast model is going to keep us in the clear not only for today but saturday and sunday as well before we build in some more cloud cover and even bring back some rain chances later on in the day. so here's how it breaks down
