divorce. now here's the problem. same sex marriages are not set to begin in the state until next year. however, opponents vow to overturn the law in a voter referendum next year. lawyers for the women agod that the state could recognize -- argued that the state should recognize gay marriages honored else where. there was surprising reaction today from an asian american business owner about council member marion barry's airlinely charged comments about asian -- racially charged comments about asian businesses in ward 8. delia goncalves has details. >> reporter: council member barry was referring to restaurants like king city carryout here on mlk avenue with the bars in the windows and bulletproof glass at the counter. he says they're actually hurting the community. >> i can understand where he's coming from. >> reporter: she didn't want to show her face but says though

the comments were insensitive. some asian businesses have a bad reputation in the black community. >> they don't want to take care of their business places nice and clean and they just want to make the money. >> reporter: just hours after his primary win, barry said quote -- >> reporter: after public outrage barry apologized and tried to explain himself. >> they don't hire anybody from the community. don't participate in the community. >> i think they should give back to clean up but i think he could have said it in a better fashion. >> i think he meant what -- needed to be said. >> reporter: all the employees at sonny's live in the neighborhood and in fact when they bought the store four months ago there were no lights, in ceiling the liquor stored away. now the bright merchandise on the shelves. getting it of the bulletproof glass is the next project. >> i always tell my employees

we want to treat our customers like our family. >> reporter: her customers saysth it goes a -- it goes a long way. delia goncalves, 9news now. >> she attends every a and c meeting and tells us she and her husband represent the younger generation of asian business owners trying to change the old image. well, we've learned more about what may have led a.c.t. college to suddenly shut down all three campuses in northern virginia this week. the federal department of education says the college failed to distribute hundreds of thousands of dollars in financial aid to its students and then lied about it. so the department of education cut off all financial assistance which led to the closings, students are demanding answers. some just weeks if graduating. >> unfortunately this is a for profit institution and sadly, it is -- come that someone that has gotten the profit and closed the doors. >> i'd like to see the money trail. i'd like to know where the

money went. >> the department of education says it is working to find schools that will accept a. c. the student as well as the college credits that they have already earned. well, the glen burnie man who told his mother he had the winning megamillions ticket now says he was joking. the maryland state lottery says it's tired of all the nonsense about last week's winning ticket. >> i am not surprised that we're -- what are we seven days out from the -- seven days out from the drawing and really only four business days that we haven't heard from anyone yet. one thing there hasn't been in this is a shortage of rumors about who may or may not have won the ticket. we are anxious and wait for them to come forward but until that time, the ticket has not been claimed. >> and of course mirlande wilson is the baltimore woman who at first claimed that she won but now she says she lost the ticket. still to come on 9news now,

saints' fans are shaking their heads at the smoking gun in the gregg williams case. he's already been suspended indefinitely by the nfl for paying players to intentionally injure through appropriates. well, now -- their opponents, well, now new recordings show exactly what he said to players -- >> williams was caught on tape by a filmmaker who was allowed in the locker room. williams was with the saints after serving as an assistant coach with the redskins. and his time here remains under investigation. virginia will give more than $1 million to thomas haynesworth. he is the man who spent 27 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. he was released from prison last spring and he was officially cleared by dna

restored howard theater will survive. even in these challenging economic times. i think so too. all right, let's get the forecast now from olga. >> the forecast has been pretty good. we started out very cold this morning. little bit slow to warm up but at least the last couple of hours we've seen a significant improvement thanks to all that sunshine. we have a high pressure system that's moving on in and that is going to keep our skies clear for the next couple of days. good news if you have passover plans, weekend plans heading into easter sunday. right now our day planner is going to keep us pretty much in the clear. you might see a high thin cloud passing from time to time but nothing to be too concerned about. no rain drops will be falling from the sky at least for the short-term forecast. we are slow to get out of the 50s right now sitting in the lower to mid 50s for noontime. by later on in the afternoon we'll definitely see a bit of a warmup. maybe even peeking toward the upper 50s near 60 degrees by that 5:00, 6:00 hour. then after sunset temperatures are going to take quite a bit of tumble 679 if you're going to be out after sunset have the

jacket with you. right down through the 50s and quickly into the 40s as we head in toward the 9:00, 10:00 hour. temperatures will be quite cool and brisk. slight and radar -- satellite and radar shows just how clear the entire eastern seaboard is. a lot of folks are going to be traveling later on this afternoon and into tomorrow and we're looking good heading north. high pressure steering the shower and storm activity down to the south and that's where you could have a problem on the roadways out ask about. for right now though temperatures are rebounding nicely. lower 50s for most of the metro area. even a warmup to 53 out to frederick and 56 for fredericksburg down to the south. we'll work in more moisture but predominantly clear and dry for the short-term. dew points low as well. that's due to those northerly winds but we're cranking it up close to 15 miles per hour and we could see pretty hefty gusts later on this afternoon. in the meantime though enjoy the sunshine with those

sunglasses on. futurecast is keeping us in the clear. we're pushing all the moisture out to the west and evening looks fine but into tomorrow morning with the clearing skies and the calm winds. temperatures are definitely going to drop a very chilly start 30s even maybe a few of upper 20s for early tomorrow morning and then in tomorrow midday and afternoon, i think we're looking fantastic. by the 6:00 hour, nothing but sunshine. flush things are going to change however as we move from sunday into monday. by sunday afternoon a little bit of moreover and a cold front is working its way into that extended forecast bringing back the rain in time for the workweek. so highs today around 58 for fredericksburg -- gaithersburg, we will see close to 60 in the city center. but tonight, is where we're going to see the very, very low temperatures moving on down. into the 30s for most of us, feeling like freezing as we get down with our freeze alert in effect. basically north and west of the city from 9:00 to 2:00 tomorrow

are my friend and my fans. on wednesday, i was diagnosed with breast cancer. and i need you. i need your prayers, i need your support and i need your love. and the first person that i told because i was going to keep this a secret and not share it with anyone was my good friend and colleague andrea roane who's been fronting buddy check 9 for almost 20 years. and she convinced me that you know what? this is a good thing for you to share it. because maybe you can help someone else and the reason why i'm saying this publicly is for two reasons andrea. number one, i want women to make sure they get their mammograms. and number two, i want them to do their monthly self-breast examinations. because that's how i found my nodule. i was on vacation in south america -- and felt a lump and said uh-oh. this is not good. and somehow, i kind of knew. >> yeah. >> but i couldn't do anything about it then. >> we've been through this

before and confirming and you went to the doctor to confirm it. and this time was a little bit different. but you talked about in telling your viewers this is personal and private. but you decided to share it with them and your patient navigator stressed to you this is a nice thing you're doing but this is about you. and you're number one. so why is it so important to share with this other women and men? >> let me tell you why i'm sharing it because there may be a woman out there listening who's not gotten a mammogram and she needs to. there may be a woman out there who is going to be going through the same thing that i'm going through. and if she knows that she has a companion like me, that's going through it, that it might make it just a little bit easier for her and then it's always great to have the prayers of friends and fans and the support that helps lift you up. >> it really does. >> so that's why i'm telling it. >> your friends were with you this morning. you went toshiba lee for an

mri, how'd that go? >> let me tell you about that. the first nodule found on wednesday that was confirmed to be cancerous, she thought was 1.3 september meters. it's larger. it's 2.2 but it was caught very early. but because i had this mri today, at sibley hospital and i can't say enough about them, they found another one. a second nodule. so it's so important for you to have the testing. and to get to it quickly. so i have to go back this afternoon and have another biopsy. i have already one for the first nodule and i need one for the second one and then on monday my surgeon, dr. magnet will sit down with me and we'll talk about what steps we're going to take and by the way, i want you to join me. i need you to join me on this journey. andrea roane -- >> we have cameras following you. >> she's going to tell story. >> again we're not trying to make a news story for channel 9. this is not what this is
