before they can take that dog home. we are following breaking news out of virginia beach this evening where a navy fighter jet has crashed into an apartment complex. just take a look at this smoldering building. there are now seven confirmed injuries right now including the two flight crew members on board the jet. our bruce leshan has been working this story all day. it sounds like they're still trying to piece together how this happened. >> they're still trying to figure it out but we just got briefed by a navy captain what said this was catastrophic mechanical malfunction. some witnesses say they actually saw flames shooting out from under the wing of this f a-18. others say they heard a kind of popping noise from the engine. we've also just learned in that the front seat was a student pilot in the backseat was an instructor. for some survivors, the only warning, three huge bams as the

fa-18 slammed into their apartment building, but ruby says she saw and heard it coming. >> we were sitting outside and we heard the pop from the engine and it was like a skidderring, where it was popping, then would it stop, and we saw the plane go down. >> the smoke and fire exploded from the buildings almost instantaneously. the tail and fuselage clearly visible in the flames. rescuers found the naval aviators in their ejection seats. >> the pilot was conscious, but barely. >> pat kavanaugh raced out to help the pilot. >> he apologized very much for hitting our complex and i told him, don't worry about it, everything is going to be fine, let's get you out of here. >> a witness snapped a shot of the jet coming in low and apparently dumping fuel. rescuers say if the plane had crashed with the full tank, the fireball and destruction would have made this far worse. >> i seen him on the other side of these trees over this way,

and it just looked basically like he dropped out of the sky. >> firefighters say the blaze was so hot they were unable to get into the apartments quickly to search for the injured. crews rushed several people outside the buildings to the hospital, none with life- threatening injuries. >> a lot of scared ladies wanting their cats, and we couldn't go back in the building after them. we grabbed as many people as we could. >> with scores of navy jets flying almost constant over heavily populated virginia beach the mayor says this is long been one of his nightmares. >> i pray every day that it doesn't happen, but it has. >> five apartment buildings were destroyed two, were damaged, but the real miracle here is that no one, no one at this point, as far as they know, was killed in this. and doctors have actually already released some of those patients from the hospital, the two naval aviators are listed in good and fair condition. >> good and fair and what a day

for sure. bruce, thank you for. that. back to you, derek. >> lesli, the new employment numbers show job growth but it is slower than expected. and more folks have stopped looking for work. this is news that could be a set-back for president obama's' fighting for reelection. tara mergener reports from the white house. >> reporter: employers added 120,000 new jobs last month. a sharp drop from the pace of growth the country has seen so far this year. the unemployment rate dropped to 8.2%. but that's only because fewer people are searching for jobs. bob is one of them. he was laid off from his job at an architecture firm in 2009. >> initially it's just shock. >> reporter: he spent months looking for work and drained his savings account, then he decided to go into business for himself. >> it's at a point where it's about sustaining yourself and just today i received a call about two new jobs. >> reporter: job creation will be one of the central issues in

this year's race for the white house. the latest employment numbers could be a set-back for president obama's reelection campaign. at a forum on women and the economy, the president admitted there's more work to be done. >> right now no issue is more important than restoring economic security for all our families in the wake of the greatest economic crisis since the great depression. >> he's hoping events like this will help him show the progress he's made. but the gop front runner says voters need more. >> they want to see real change and someone leading the country who understands how the economy works so we can get the economy working for the american people. >> reporter: mitt romney argues he's the best candidate to shore up the nation's economy. but first he will have to lock in his party's nomination. tara mergener for cbs news, the white house. taking a look back at that unemployment report, the number of new jobs grew in manufacturing, hospital pi tal tea and in health care, but in retail the numbers fell, and

they're needed. gop presidential candidate rick santorum's daughter is back in the hospital. three-year-old bella suffers from a rare defect clip a baby has an extra chromosome that results in abnormal development of the brain and major organs. only one in ten babies born with the disorder survive their first year of life. same-sex marriage in the state of maryland is not set to take effect until 2013 but today in annapolis the state's highest court is hearing argument over whether two women married in california can file for divorce. in 2010 a judge denied that request including that the marriage was not value thripd statement but lawyers for the women say maryland should recognize gay marriages performed elsewhere even though it doesn't allow same-sex weddings. one speeding ticket, license revoked. that's the punishment a d.c. woman faces. >> i'm kristen fisher in

washington where a woman is just four days away from losing her driver's license after she was caught going 83 in a 70 on i-95 in virginia. just 13 miles over the speed limit. there was no accident, there was no swerving, there was no alcohol. >> heather can hardly believe what's happening. knife clean driving record. i have never been arrested. >> reporter: she's already paid a $219 fine, but now she's about to lose her license. >> this is the official order of revocation notice. >> reporter: charge, reckless driving. in d.c., it's 12 points against your license. an automatic revocation. it's a serious offense usually involving an accident. but in virginia, reckless driving is defined as anything over 80 miles per hour. only a six-point violation. >> when i actually took the citation to the dmv and showed it to them and said, the reality of this is i was going 93 in a 70, they said, yes, that's the reality, but it's not the law, and the law does

good but the cancer was caught early, and one of the first people jc talked with about her diagnosis was her long time friend and morning anchor, andrea roane. for decades andrea has been encouraging women and men to conduct those monthly self- exams. jc says that is so important because that's how she found the lump in her breast. >> i was on vacation in south america, and felt a lump and said, uh-oh this is not good. and somehow i kind of knew. >> jc decided to open up about her diagnosis because she hopes she will be able to save someone else's life. she wants women to conduct their own self-exams to get their scheduled mammograms, and she wants to be an inspiration to other women who are now on this same journey. jc, we want you to know we're all standing behind you and beside you, and we all know that with your support, she's going to get through this and thrive. we'll be right back.
