we'll begin with late breaking news out of prince george's county. police are searching for an armed man. >> all right, it's happening in the 2100 block of gilford road. our reporter is on the scene. what do you know? >> we're at the intersection here about several hundred yards from the building where members of the police special

operations squad are now searching from top to bottom in search of the armed robber. not completely sure that he will still be in the rebuilding -- in the building. we overherd that just a moment ago. police began searching the building shortly after 5:00 when the armed robber apparently opened the next day staffing. and whatever cash was in there. they fired at least one shot for the seriousness and after that shop, people in the office ran from the building.

no one has been hurt e no one has been shot. that one fire was apparently fired by the robber himself. now, between 23 and the road here on the university boulevard east, the street is closed. there is some traffic problems as a result. but no resolution as to whether or not that is still in there. back to you. >> all right, thank you for that. well, dozens of people in the virginia beach apartment complex is lucky to be alive tonight after the navy fire jet crashed into the building. several people were hurt, but amazingly no one was killed. now, we'll report from the scene for you. >> reporter: authorities are still coming through the wreckage, trying to make sure that everyone will be accounted for. they say the outcome could have been far worse. this was the scene just moments after the navy and the fighter jet crashed into the two-story apartment complex in virginia beach. the thick black smoke filled the air, while the signature

double tales smolder in the -- in the rubble. >> you could hear the pop in the engine. it was skittering. and then we just saw the plane go down. >> reporter: another eyewitness snapped this photo of the jet, which was dumping fuel. the nose was dangled upward. and then it just fell from the sky. >> the front end of the plane started to go down and then boom. shortly after take off, and the initial indications show you that the aircraft, they suffered a catastrophic mechanical malfunction. >> reporter: both pilots were ejected just moments before the crash as parachuted down to the ground. landing near the wreckage and the burning apartments. and one of their seats landed in this backyard. they found one of the pilots on his back porch. >> he was in shock. f and he was still strapped to

his seat. like today, we just picked them up and dragged them through the other side of the parking lot away from the fire. >> reporter: both are expected to recover. a 2008 crash of the same model fighter jet killed four people in san diego. and that was blamed on the mechanical failure and poor decisions by the student pilot. friday's crash also involved a student. officials say that it could take months to determine the exact cause of this crash. in virginia beach, 9news now. >> thank you. well, for 40 years, she's been the face of washington. the icon in the city and the beloved member of the 9news now family. jaycee hayward shared a lot ofnews with us. but earlier in the day, she opened up on a new chapter that no one wanted to hear. >> i need to share something that is very personal and positive with most people. but i want to share it with you. i feel like you're my friend and my fans. and on wednesday, i was

diagnosed with breast cancer. i need your prayers and your support and your love. >> reporter: now, she says that the prognosis will be good and the cancer was caught early. one of the first people they will talk about was long-time friend and the morning anchor. for decades, she has been encouraging women and men through her buddy check nine report. they said that it will be so important, because that's how they found the lump in her breast. >> i was on vacation in south america. and i felt a lump and said this is not good. somehow i kind of knew. let me tell you why i'm sharing it. there might be a woman listening who has not gotten the mammogram and she needs to. and there may be a woman on out there who will be going through the same thing that i'm going through and you know, if she knows that she has a companion like me that will be going through it, that it might make it just a little bit easier for her. >> reporter: now, she has what

is called an evasive carcinoma. she will head back to the doctor to get her biopsy done. she hopes what she has shared with all of you will help save the other women. she appreciates the well wishes from all of you. well, breast cancer, it will be an ugly and frightening thing. but there will be some encouraging news about this disease. more and more women are winning their battle. our ken molestina is sharing why. >> reporter: she is the doctor who detected jaycee's breast cancer. according to her, women are beating the diagnosis more than ever before. now the number is down to 30%. >> this is a classic view for you and the views that has gotten bumps. >> reporter: the three main

factors are approving the patient's odds. first, it is far superior than ever before. and more women are fighting support. >> i'm happy that they are finding it there. it has taken a lot this year and the mystery out of it. now, she probably displays a painting made by the niece that will remind her of the journey. >> you'll get through it. >> it was diagnosed by the breast cancer in 2010. >> over at walter reed you would ring a bell and it will be a great feeling to know that you won't have anymore chemo in you and then you feel great and you start living your life again. >> she's a part of the women that has beaten cancer, but it fluctuates without any real explanation.

>> now, around 2,000, we started to see a decline in the number of breast cancers. but now, you know, since 2008, we are starting to see a slight increase for you up again. >> reporter: while so much is still being studied about the disease. the number one key to beating it is still early detection. 9news now. >> and the doctor says that treatments have become so advanced that in most cases, women could go from diagnosis to be given the all clear in about a year. now, monday by the way, it will be buddy check 9 day. the ninth day of the month. buddy check is a great resource for information about cancer. so we want to encourage all of you to go to our website to read more. and while you're there, you can click on the story about jaycee and send her your good wishes. she really does appreciate them. well, did you know that the d.c. driver could lose their license just for driving 13 miles over the speed limit? well, apparently the resident is about to find that out. the hard way. she was caught in the state of virginia going about 893 in a

70 miles an hour zone and she was charged with wreckless driving. apparently in virginia, wreckless driving means going anything over 89-- 80 miles per hour. in washington, d.c., however, wreckless driving applies to a more serious event that involves an accident. heather failed to get the dmv to acknowledge the differences between the two meanings. >> actually when i took the citations to the dmv and showed it to them and said the reality of this is that i was going 83 in 70 miles per hour speed limit. >> that's a tough one. to d.c. is about to yank heather's driver's license. she's fighting it and even appealed it to the d.c. council member, but the fact is her insurance has been canceled. blanch same-sex marriage in the state -- same-sex marriage in the state of maryland is not suppose to take effect until 2013.

they are hearing arts about two immaterial with who were marry -- women who were married in california says that it is not valid in maryland. they ought to recognize gaymarriages performed elsewhere. the maryland attorney general says you and i have ever right to record police officers doing their jobs in public. but some prince george's county officers perhaps never got the memo. they gave kim a pretty hard time yesterday when she walked outside her home in college park to record them arresting one of her neighbors. she says there were at least eight officers. some with guns drawn and her neighbor in handcuffs. >> it's perfectly legal to record. >> her neighbor was never charged in yesterday's incident. late today, prince george's county police released this statement saying, "we recognize and support a citizen's right

to lawfully record their officers performing a duty. if there is a reason to that did not occur, we'll look into the facts of the case and act accordingly." an update on the howard university's athletic program. the student athletes were reinstated that were ineligible to compete. last friday they announced they would temporarily hold a number of student athletes from the competition as a part of the internal investigation of possible ncaa rules violations. now as a result of today's decision, all sports team will compete as scheduled for the remainder of the season. despite today's news, howard's internal investigation continues. one down, two to go. and today, the megamillions jackpot winner in the state of kansas came forward. but they wanted to remain anonymous. so they said that the winner will be taking home the lump sum of almost $158 million or should i say roughly $110 million after taxes. as for the winners in maryland
