attacking an unsuspecting man. first, a 6-year-old boy and a loaded handgun make for a tragic combination today in prince george's county. >> police say what ended up happening was an accident with the worst possible consequences. matt jablow joins us live from clinton with the details. matt? >> reporter: police describe it as an almost unthinkable nightmare and based on what we now know happened here today, it would be awfully hard to disagree. >> i didn't know it was a shooting at the time. >> reporter: he says he was on his computer when he heard the sound of a woman screaming right across the street. >> the lady came out that owned the house and she was yelling and carrying on and then i heard sirens. >> reporter: it was around 3:00 this afternoon when according to police, a 6-year-old boy who lives with his great- grandmother in a two-story house found a gunin a backpack in the house and accidentally shot himself. the little boy was rushed to a

local hospital, but tragically, was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived. >> this is every parent's worst nightmare. >> reporter: according to police, the gun belonged to a 20-year-old man who lived with the 6-year-old boy and his great-grandmother, but is apparently not related to them. >> the 20-year-old has been transported to our criminal investigation division where he's being questioned by detectives. >> reporter: police say they're investigating whether or not the gun was legally registered and considering charging the 21- year-old gun owner for not properly securing the loaded revolver that killed the 6-year old boy. >> it happened because someone was acting irresponsibly and had a loaded firearm that was accessible to a 6-year-old boy. it seems like it happens every year somewhere around and within the washington metropolitan area, it does not need to happen. >> according to the brady center to prevent gun violence, 140 children and teenagers are killed every year here in the u.s. and another 4,000 are

injured by accidental shootings. derrick. >> matt jablow, thanks. the good news tonight is mega millions ticket hold near maryland has finally come forward. the bad news, we may never know who it is. that winner wants to remain anonymous. today the maryland lottery received and verified that winning ticket for the $656 million grand prize that's being split up three wails. they'll have a news conference tomorrow morning with more details. the other winner in kansas came forward anonymously as well. the third from illinois has yet to be heard from. caught on tape, people standing around watching, laughing as a tourist is beaten up in baltimore. we have to warn you this video is really, really tough. the attack happened on st. patrick's day near the front of the courthouse. the man was walking when someone punched him in the face. that forced him to the ground. within seconds a swarm of people go after the victim. they strip him naked, steal his money, watch, iphone and keys. baltimore police say the victim had no idea what had happened

to him when he woke up the next morning. it wasn't until a family member saw the video online and told him. so far, no arrests have been made. the attorney general of the united states, as you know, is a 62-year-old black man named eric holder. >> but last week, a bearded 23- year-old white man went to holder's voting precinct in northwest d.c. and was offered holder's d.c. primary ballot to vote in that election. this is the story about the fight over voter i.d. requirements and gary nurenberg is the man to tell us. >> reporter: you have more of a prayer of finding out if eric holder votes at this nebraska avenue church. just ask. >> do you have an eric holder? >> reporter: the poll watchers answer might dim the attorney general's ego. the actor confirms the address. >> i actually forgot my i.d. >> you don't need it. >> i left it in the car. >> as long as you're here,

you're on our list. that's who you say you are, you're okay. >> you sign into the poll book and your signature serves as the verification you are who you say you are. >> reporter: rather than sign and commit a crime punishable by fines and 5 years in prison, the actor left and didn't vote. it's meant to refute contentions. >> in-person voting fraud is uncommon. >> reporter: and an official in holder's justice department told 9 news now that the so- called examples ever rampant voter fraud consistently turn out to be manufactured ones. the issue of voter fraud divides republicans who in general say they support i.d. and democrats who say it disenfranchises voters who didn't have i.d. that video did more than target holder. >> we take you inside the nation's capitol on primary day to show ballots belonging to political celebrities being offered to total strangers.

>> when our office of general council is conducting an investigation and we're going to identify whether there were any laws that were broken in this case and any information that we gather, we'll refer to the appropriate law enforcement authorities. >> reporter: as you heard, producers say they will soon release more d.c. election primary footage showing how easily fraud could have been committed by their actors. the report says between 2002 and 2009120 persons were charged with voter fraud and 86 were convicted. new at 11:00, a prince george's police officer opened fire killing one person. out over the scene in the 81 block of sheriff's road in landover, the officer spotted three suspicious men. when he got out of the cruiser to speak with them, they ran out. the officer caught up with one of the suspects and fired a taser to try to stop him. the man pulled the taser out, reached for his gun and that forced the officer to open fire first and kill the suspect. no word if the other two men at the scene have been located.

new tonight, out smarting cell phone thieves. the cell phone industry tomorrow will announce a new nationwidedatabase preventing the use of stolen smart phones. according to usa today, last year, 38% of the robberies in washington, d.c., involved smart phones. that database will prevent stolen smart phones from being used. it's scheduled to be up and running within the next 18 months. so far tonight, wildfires burned more than 1,100 acres across the george washington georgia national forest. they believe somebody started the fire from either a cigarette or other burning outside. today's high winds made it tough for crews to contain the blaze. fire officials say there's not an imminent danger but it's still too close for comfort for many. when do the winds die down? let's go to anny hong on the weather terrace.

>> breezy conditions tonight. they'll guy down after -- die down after midnight but the fire threat is not over. what is going to help is the little bit of rain we're seeing tonight. here's a look at the radar. i'll zoom in to show you where we have scattered light rain coming through. it's hit and miss around the area for tonight. generally coming in from the west, going to the east. a front, you've got moderate rain. we're looking at washington out toward gainesville, looking at moderate rainfall. also in southern maryland getting some very light rain around leonard town. we're not expecting a whole lot of rain from the system. we have the high fire danger once again in effect tomorrow from noon until 8:00 p.m. so tonight, we're still seeing windy conditions, gusts at 25 miles per hour in downtown. gaithersburg 23. hagerstown 31 in just the last hour. for the rest of tonight, mostly cloudy conditions. it will be chilly with isolated showers.

lows will be in the 40s. tomorrow, expecting partly sunny conditions. a chilly start in the 40s. it will still be breezy tomorrow. we'll talk about how long the cool weather lasts, also a warmup coming this way. more details a little bit later. >> thank you, anny. new tonight, the two men arrested for a deadly shooting spree in tulsa have both confessed. according to police documents filed in court today, 19-year- old jake england and 32-year- old alvin watts admitted they shot five people last friday and three of those victims died while the other two suffered serious injury. all of those victims were black. both men have been charged with first degree murder. now, police have said one motive for the shootings could have been england's desire for revenge in his father's fatal shooting by a black man two years ago. now to the headlines in the trayvon martin shooting. george zimmerman set up a website to collect money for his legal expenses and to wave folks away from phony websites. florida state prosecutors ruled out charging zimmerman with first degree murder and decided

not to ask a grand jury to look into the matter. instead, special prosecutor angela corey will decide herself whether to file any charges against zimmerman. >> this is the 9th of the month, and we have a special buddy check 9 update to share with you that's especially emotional for all of us here at 9 news now. as you may know, jaycee hayward was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. she announced friday she decided to share her breast cancer treatment journey with her family of viewers to help other women who may be going through the same thing. her doctors say she has either stage one or stage two breast cancer and the malignancy is estrogen positive. that's a good sign. that means there are hormonal drugs that can help fight it. they say she will not have to go through chemotherapy but will have between four to six weeks of radiation treatment. she also decided to have a bilateral mastectomy on both sides. during today's noon show, she explained what she herself

admits is a bold and radical choice. >> i don't want to live my life in fear where every six months, i have to have a mammogram, and i'm wondering whether the cancer has come back. i want to put this behind me. i have things to do, places to go, people to see. and i don't want this to be the most important part of my life. right now, it's important, but i can do something that can make me sleep much better and be at ease and get on with my life. >> she's scheduled to have her surgery within the next couple of days. you and i discussed, it certainly is an aggressive treatment choice, but women do sometimes say, you know what? they want this for peace of mind. in fact, some women with very strong family histories of genetic breast cancer that can be very invasive spreads fast. some of them decide after losing mothers or sisters, they decide to have a bilateral mastectomy before they get diagnosed as part of a preventive treatment. >> this is a major surgery, right? >> it is.

the clock is ticking down to the final minutes of the current session of the maryland general assembly. state lawmakers are set to adjourn at midnight but have not agreed on a budget so they may have to extend the session. lawmakers are divided over how to balance the books the next fiscal year and cut a deficit of more than a billion dollars. more shakeups in the wake of the spending scandal. >> an ace employee has been put on administrative leave. the gsa is being investigated for wasteful spending following an inspector general's report criticizing a 2010 las vegas conference at a luxury resort. the price tag, $823,000. the huffington post obtained more videos of what seems to be gsa employees mocking the system. in one, the paper i said gsa officials as the actors shown taking and destroying government property. in another, a government clown describes his job.

experiences i've had. chico and rita, it's so adult it's got subtitles and sex scenes and jazz. lots and lots of jazz. that's the animated disney gillespie there, by the way. but the main characters are cuban and it's set in the 1950s. chico plays the piano, rita sings and their love story is so passionate, so tragic and so darn entertaining, after awhile i forgot they were cartoons, and i believed. so did the other 25 people in the old west end cinema, none of whom seemed to be under the age of 40. chico and rita is the rarest of creatures, the movie for grownups and it was nominated for best animated feature. it's that time of year again. pretty soon the avengers and other types of super types will be backing them in. finding chico and rita, that may not be so easy. tonight i wanted to say, it is
