new fighting in syria this morning just as a cease-fire is set to begin. wild weather. tornadoes and hail ripped through the plains as fires rage from new england to florida. >> there wasn't even any smoke, and all of a sudden, a wall of fire started coming at our house. and pint-sized heroes. middle schoolers leap into action after their bus driver has a medical merge. captioning funded by cbs good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm michelle miller. we begin with the endangered cease-fire in syria. a pullout of government troops

was supposed to begin this morning, but there are reports of shelling in at least two towns today. yesterday the fighting spilled into lebanon and turkey. activists say more than 125 people have been killed in the past two days. we have the latest from washington. >> good morning, michelle. despite the deaths there's still hope for a cease-fire. according to the plans syrian troops are supposed to pull out today in preparation for a full cease-fire on thursday. government forces are supposed to withdraw from syrian cities today but activists claim this video of burning buildings and homes show the syrian forces were still engaged battle on monday, hours before the deadline. >> not only has the violence not abated, it's been worse in recent days. >> reporter: yesterday the violence spilled over the border into leb nop and turkey. people were seen running from

the border as a gun battle broke out near a refugee camp. at least two people died during the attack. this man lives in turkey and showed us bullet holes in the walls of his home. according to the peace plan, kofi annan said they must pull out and begin a cease-fire within 48 hours. >> it's done some moving around with the tanks and artillery, but only so they could use them in other places. >> reporter: president obama is watching closely. they'll meet to discuss what the next move will be if today's deadline is not met. >> we certainly have seen no signs yet of the assad regime abiding by its commitments, which is obviously quite unfortunate. >> reporter: the peace plan appeared to break down over the weekend when president assad demanded the rebels agree in writing they will lay down their weapons. they said they would obey the

cease-fire if they stop fighting. michelle? >> thank you. in afghanistan, a suicide bomber killed at least nine people and wound 2d 1. it happened this morning in the province in the western part of the country. officials say the bomber attacked a crowd of people waiting outside a building. civilians and police are among the casualties. several airlines say they're going to stop flying over north korea. the north says it is ready to launch a satellite later this week so, the airlines have decided to temporarily reroute about 20 flights. the u.s. objects to the launch, saying it's a test to show north korea has a rocket capable of carrying a nuclear warhead as far as the hawaiian islands and alaska.

yesterday we wrapped up what turned out to be the warmest day on record. it was 8.6 above normal. overall more than 15,000 temperature records were set in march, and at looeft one record-high temp was registered in all 50 states. march isn't just warm but the driest. those conditions may have helped set off some wild weather events around the country on monday. an outbreak of fire stretching in florida. >> that's the big evidence. >> to new england sniet was ash and soot and kind ott raining ashes. >> the fires were fueled by low humidity, tropical strength wind gusts and dry conditions. in november new england two fires emerged and ended up destroying three buildings and forcing some neighbors to evacuate sniet looked like the

bad movie "dahntay's peak." it was unbelievable. it's like you see in the movies. until you're there, you tlifrpg, wow, i think i'm in trouble, i'd better get the hell out of here. >> this fire shut down a busy commuter system as rush hour beginning. officials in new jersey say it could consume a thousand acres before it's out and while it hasn't destroyed any structures, it came close to some homes. >> i'm worried to death. i make sure we have our evacuation plan. it's frightening because you don't know. >> the fires weren't just limited to the east coast. a brushfire in northern minnesota scorched more than 1,400 acres and prompted the national guard to battle the flames nchl the plains it wasn't fire but severe weather that had some people on edge. at least two people were injured when a violent hailstorm and at

least two tornadoes struck oklahoma. the threat of severe weather in the nation's midsection could increase later in the week. meanwhile conditions in the northeast are expected to pull off while the southeast could see freezing temperatures by thursday. police in tulsa, oklahoma, say the two men accused of going on a deadly shooting rampage have confessed. 19-year-old jake england and 32-year-old alvin watts were in court yesterday. bail was set at $9 million apiece. police documents say the suspects admit on friday they shot five people. all the victims were black. three were killed, two wounded. authorities plan to charge england and watts with first-degree murder. now to the shooting death of trayvon martin, the gunman george zimmerman has set up a website. he says he can't get any work and is asking for donations to help pay for the legal defejs

and living expenses. the prosecutor said yesterday she'll not take the case to a grand jury, but that does not mean he won't be charged with killing martin. >> reporter: student protesters blocked the entrance to the sanford police department monday. their goal, shut it down and pressure special prosecutor to arrest george zimmerman for the shooting death of trayvon martin. >> she says the process will continue and justice is going to be served but we're here to fight for justice and until it is, we're still here. >> reporter: it means the state will not pursue a first-degree murder charge. cory says she needs more time. >> i think if the public would be patient, they would understand this is a very complicated area of the law and we're going make sure the public also has the answers that they need.

kong ee hang seng dropped more than 6%. the dow lost 130 points to slip below 13,000 while the nasdaq fell 33. it's the deal that has the tech world buzzing. facebook is spending $1 billion to acquire the photo-sharing company instagram. by acquiring the company face boong will gain the technology that has attracted about 30 million users of instagram in more than a year. they will pay cash and stock for instagram and will hire the company's dozen or so employees. microsoft is paying out billions of dollars to hundreds of patents held by aol. following the announcement aol shares surged to their highest level in more than a year. chairman ben bernanke says the federal reserve is still working toward fixing regulatory problems that came to light during the 2008 financial crisis. last night he told an audience regulators must also keep an eye out for unanticipated troisk the

take very long. ozzie guillen, the famously loose-tungsed new manager of the miami marlins has already talked himself into trouble with the city's huge cuban community. he's using a marlins off day today to return to miami to apologize after striking a nerve by speak kindly of cuba's long-time dictator fidel castro. "time" magazine quotes him as saying, quote, i respect fidel castro, you know why. many people have tried to kill fidel castro in the last 60 years but that expletive is still there, unquote. some miami officials want him fired. >> i feel sad, and in a couple of days something in my stomach, not because of what i did but because i know i hurt a lot of people. >> while that was brewing yesterday, guillen's team was spoiling the opener.

anibal sanchez outfitched the phillies. in texas, a rough start for the rangers' highly touted new pitcher from japan. he gave up four runs in the first inning but in if fifth nelson cruz hit a homer to left to tie it and darvish wound up with a standing ovation and the 11-5 win. finally, an update on the nfl's bountygate scandal. head coach sean payton is officially out. yesterday nfl commissioner roger goodell said, no, the suspension stands. when we come back, school bus heroes caught on tape after the driver loses consciousness, students jump into action. and here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. washington, d.c., partly cloudy and 61. atlanta, partly sunny, 76. st. louis, mostly sunny, 62. denver, mostly sunny, 72. and showers and 62 in seattle. near tacoma, washington, yesterday some quick-thinking middle school students saved themselves and their classmates from what could have been a deadly bus crash. kevin mccarty of cbs seattle station crro has the dramatic story. >> reporter: this shows the school bus driver losing consciousness, slumping at the wheel as a buzz full of children careens out of control. >> the bus driver was acting funny, his arms are flailing his eying are bulging and he's making weird reactions.

>> reporter: the student reacts as the bus is heading for the church. >> i leap off chair, grab the wheel turns it off the road and take the keys out of the ignition and the bus started slowing down. >> reporter: watch the video again as the bus approaches the middle lake school after 8:00 this morning. the driver began showing something was wrong. he was coughing and shifting in his seat. suddenly his eyed rolled back in his head. the boy pulled the keys from the egg nation. johnny wood who was trained in cpr ran up to help. >> i ran up trying to do chest compressions but his eyes were rolling back and i could tell it was getting 45rder for him to breechlkt. >> reporter: other students called 911 and a teacher hopped onboard to help out.

they were glad they kept cool heads. >> i wanted to stop the truck because i don't want to crash and know wait feels like, so, yeah. i just don't want to die. >> it was scary and and i exhilarating. >> because? >> you want to know if it's okay but it's happening so fast your heart is pumping. it's breath taking and breath-giving. >> we bet it was. the bus driver was taken to the hospital and is said to be in grave condition. no one else was hurt. the navy has recovered the flight recorder from the fighter jet that crashed into an apartment complex in virginia beach on friday and they've begun rae moving parts of the shattered f/a-18 from the remains of the building. no one was killed. residents who have lost their homes have begun receiving government checks for short-term expenses. coming up after "cbs this

morning," edy falco on her hit show nurse jackie. i'm mick shell miller. this is the "cbs morning news." we knew it would take time, but we were determined to see it through. today, while our work continues, i want to update you on the progress: bp has set aside 20 billion dollars to fund economic and environmental recovery. we're paying for all spill- related clean-up costs. and we've established a 500 million dollar fund so independent scientists can study the gulf's wildlife and environment for ten years. thousands of environmental samples from across the gulf have been analyzed by independent labs under the direction of the us coast guard. i'm glad to report all beaches and waters are open for everyone to enjoy. and the economy is showing progress with many areas on the gulf coast having their best tourism seasons in years. i was born here, i'm still here and so is bp.

tairm. -- traffic momentarily. temperatures will be ditching down for -- dipping down for the next two hours. right now we're sitting well. most of us are in the 40s, near 50 degrees for the most part. as we clear out, the skies are going to dip a little bit before sunrise. at reagan national airport we have 48 degrees. it has cleared out nicely. i'm expecting a lot of sunshine through midday and early afternoon. we will bring a little bit of cloud cover by the 5:00 hour. before that happens most of us will top out in the upper 50s to near 60 degrees and we'll begin to back down after sunset around 6:00, 7:00. for the most part, though, a very chilly start. so be prepared for that as you're stepping out. we even have 37 toward manassas. 39 culpeper. most of us hovering middle 40s to upper 40s. feeling cooler than that. we have some winds cranking this morning at 5 to 10 miles per hour. it will be windy by later on this afternoon and we could see
