they are. scoot broom, 9news now. >> by the way, the state of maryland will get $13 million in income tax. a construction worker fell to his death this morning in silver spring. it happened while the man was working at blair house, an apartment building in the 8200 block of 16th street. authorities are still on the scene. they're trying to determine exactly how this happened. the man has not been identified. no one else was injured. two men are in custody after leading police on a chase with the pair crashing into a reflecting pool. d.c. police attempted to stop the men along north capital street but the driver sped off and then crashed into a reflecting pool near lower senate park. officers found a handgun stashed inside the car. so far police have not released the names of the suspects. charges could be filed later today against the gun owner after a child accidentally shot and killed himself. this was the scene along

arbutus lane in clinton, maryland last night. investigators say that the child found the gun in a backpack and it went off accidentally. medics rushed the child to a nearby hospital where he later died. >> it happened because someone was acting irresponsibly and had a loaded firearm that was accessible to a 6-year-old boy. it seems like it happens every year somewhere around and within the washington metropolitan area. it just does not need to happen. >> according to the brady center to prevent gun violence, about 140 children are killed every year in the united states accidentally. for the first time we are hearing from the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot trayvon martin. george zimmerman has launched a website, and he's asking supporters for help. meanwhile, martin's family continues to push for an arrest but authorities say that they need more time to investigate. randall pinkston has a report

from sanford, florida. >> reporter: george zimmerman is speaking out for the first time. the man who says he shot and killed trayvon martin in self- defense has create add website called "the real george zimmerman." in it he describes the shooting as a life altering event and says i have been forced to leave my home, my employer, my family, and ultimately my entire life. zimmerman says he cannot work and is asking supporters to donate to his legal fund and living expenses. >> he said that he experienced a life alternating -- altering event where trayvon martin experienced a life ending event. >> reporter: the martin family and demonstrators nationwide want zimmerman arrested. on monday protesters blocked the front doors of the sanford, florida police station, and during the night, someone shot out the windows of an empty police car in the same neighborhood where martin was killed. sanford officials and the martin family are asking for patience and calm. it has been six weeks since

trayvon martin's death. the special prosecutor says she needs more time. angela cory says an arrest will be her call and she's not going to present the case to a grand jury. martin's family and zimmerman's attorneys both see it as a positive sign. >> it's our expectation there will not be charges filed. if we're wrong, we're prepared to defend him. >> we truly believe aft investigation is completed -- after the investigation is completed, that he will be arrested. >> reporter: the decision not to use a grand jury means zimmerman cannot be charged with first-degree murder. but if he's arrested, he could still be charged with lesser crimes. randall pinkston, cbs news, florida. >> police let zimmerman go the night of the shooting saying they found no evidence to contradict his claim of self- defense. the maryland general assembly may reconvene for a special session later this week. after they failed to pass a revenue plan which would have avoided severe budget cuts. the budget that lawmakers approved just before the midnight deadline calls for as

roane. after you're diagnosed with breast cancer, there are a lot of decisions that must be made regarding how to attack your specific cancer. yesterday jc met with her plastic surgeon and breast surgeon. he received news about the second lesion that was found. here's her reaction. >> benign, oh, great. oh, my gosh. oh. the second one was benign so it wasn't cancerous. >> we're here live on the set. the second lesion, that was the one found in the m.r.i. we have been waiting for the pathology report. you got the good news from your surgeon. >> i have been doing the happy dance all night long because that was good news.

actually after i received that news, it made me change how i wanted to attack this cancer and what type of treatment i wanted to do. so i made a decision. i talked to my breast surgeon dr. magnum last night. she says i'm a perfect candidate for a lump picture my -- for a lumpectomy. i'm going to have it tomorrow at sidly hospital. i'm going to tell you that prayer works. prayer works. when i got that news that the second tissue was no malignant and not cancer, i said it's because of all the prayers of people who have been lifting me up. so thank you. i can't thank you enough. >> what's really interesting, you were looking ahead. as i said, a lot of decisions. you were very adamant, had the second lesion been ma willing

nantz -- malignant, you were going for the double mass sect my -- mass sect my -- mastectomy. >> there were a lot of steps. the doctor said we could do the lumpectomy tomorrow. if you still decide you want to have the bilateral mastectomy, we can do that later. right now i'm going to have the lumpectomy. it's several hours. you have to get to the hospital four hours before the procedure. the procedure is an hour and a half. they insert a wire so that the surgeon knows exactly where she's going to be working. so i'll be there all day, come home, maybe have to stay overnight but hopefully i'll be able to come home and be bark to work on -- be back to work on monday. >> she's incredible. the your prayers have definitely made a difference. we're glad of the good news but it also shows you that when you are detected early, look at all

few decades. one of them right over here, the amphitheater at the base of the washington monument. the other? constitution gardens. constitution gardens has been around since 1976. it was always intended to have a restaurant by a beautiful pond but funds ran out. today it's more of a swampy pool surrounded by a crumbling sidewalk. but what if constitution gardens looks more like this? >> what people are seeing today are really the top designers in the country who wanted a design for the national mall. >> reporter: caroline cunningham with the trust for the national mall has overseen this year-long competition. it started with 32 entries. now the eight finalists are on display at the museum of american history. designs for constitution gardens include restaurants, skating rinks, a stage in the middle of the pond, even places to go fishing. >> i don't like the idea of having like fishing because when you're fishing and you can catch people and you'll get pollution, it's really dangerous. >> reporter: rachel smith is

for business. hundreds of fans crowded t street northwest yesterday for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. >> three, to -- three, to, one- - >> two, one. >> for decades the howard theater was the place to go to see live entertainment. but after it closed in 1970, the theater fell to -- became a dump really and deteriorated but after a $29 million renovation, well, the old building is back and better than ever before. d.c. native and comedian ronda comedian ron sykes is -- ronda sykes is going to perform and do performances thursday through sunday. i'm so glad it's back. how are you doing? >> doing well. i got a little blown away.

>> rather you than me. >> as predicted. we talked about it most of the morning. we had winds around 10 miles per hour. that's pretty reasonable but we were expecting around midday to start to whip up that wind. the wind range will go closer to 20 miles per hour and higher and some of the wind gusts will be closer to 35 miles per hour. yes, definitely be careful out there. the weather for us yesterday was absolutely beautiful. we got at least up to the upper 60s, near 70 degrees. we're going to hold back a little bit today mainly from the winds and also from the cloud cover that's -- that just started moving on in. this time of the year we see about 65 degrees and so far at reagan national airport we've just made it to 64 this hour. your day planner for the remainder of the afternoon is going to stay on the breezy side. winds already sustained in the teens right now. we'll get closer to those 20, 22 mile per hour winds later on this afternoon. and for the most part our temperatures are going to hover into the lower range 60s. again it will depend upon how

much the sunlight gets through in your particular corner of our viewing region. then we'll be partly to mostly cloudy by the 5:00 hour. temperatures will start to drop off just a little bit. later on in the day, however, we will see a little more clearing gradually as we head in toward the late evening hours. we'll slip out of the 60s into the 50s and, yes, eventually hit those 40s for most of our overnight lows, even 30s out interest the suburbs. so -- into the suburbs. here's what you need to know for the short-term. the forecast hour by hour will take us to the lower 60s predominantly till 6:00. we are looking at 64 degrees at reagan national. then again the cloud cover will abfactor as we go in toward the -- to be a factor as we go in toward the evening hours. the moisture has stayed off to our north. a little raindrop in the forecast for later on today. a shower could come as far south as baltimore but most of us in the d.c. metro area will be clear. already warming up nicely to 63. across laurel 64.

most of us will settle in the lower 60s till we get into the late afternoon. the michael&son camera has us with mostly cloudy skies. the future cast is going to pull in some moisture. small chances for today. better chances for tomorrow. afternoon, evening hours for tomorrow, we could see some showers beginning to -- begin to move on through. for the most part the seven-day forecast is going to show a lot of improvement. we will cool down slightly for wednesday. a little nicer for the home opener for the nats on thursday but the seven-day forecast or outlook, it looks pretty good. we start to warm up nicely. saturday in the 70s. sunday in the 80s. 9news now will be right back.
