outcome of that trial. bruce johnson has been working the story. >> my daughter -- >> 36-year-old vanessa was shot and fatally wounded in march of 2011 in her home on b street in southeast. >> is my daughter gone? i had peace of mind. >> gerald ronald pinkett was arrested in their home and charged with second-degree murder. since 2007, pinkett had been a train operator for metro in good standing. he was placed on leave with pay, that was until last week when metro allowed him to return to work despite the murder charge. >> metro's spokesman wouldn't do an on camera interview, but pinkett was released by the court. he says his case was reviewed. he was evaluated by metro officials and decided that pinkett could return to work, but couldn't come in any contact with the public. he worked at one of the rail

yards. >> vanessa mcgee's stepfather, he is livid with metro. >> i want metro to back down. do not support. you are supporting a murder. >> the victim's mother, cheryl clark, wants picket off the job. >> he needs to be locked up. >> metro says picket is considered innocent pending outcome of trial and the washington examiner points out that metro allowed a station manager to work for ten months while he was facing a negligent homicide charge for deadly metro bus crash. the newspaper says that employee was fired just last week after pleading guilty two weeks ago. bruce johnson, 9news now. >> the murder trial for ronald pinkett is set for june 18. fairfax county is giving the silver line a green light. today the board of supervisors confirmed the county's participation in phase two of the project that will bring metro to dulles international airport. the county board of supervisors approved its list of eight proposed names for its

silver line stations. they are mcclane, tyson's corner, spring hill, reston town center, herndon, and innovation center. the transit authority will review those names for final approval and adoption. you saw the story first on 9news now and tonight, we have uncovered more possible evidence of a possible quota system in the arlington county police department. we first broke the story last month after a police officer slipped an internal memo our way. >> i'm peggy fox in arlington county. 9news now has uncovered more memos giving the appearance of quotas in the arlington county police department. we obtained the memos from a freedom of information act request. four contain goals and requirements for police officers to write a certain number of tickets for various violations. here's one that requires officers running radar to write five speeding tickets an hour. >> i didn't see it before then. >> you never saw this either? >> douglas scott says he was

only made aware of the problem 9news brought it to their attention with this memo leaked to us by an officer. failing to attain these goals could result in disciplinary action. >> that a problem statement. >> chief scott is directing his commanders to never list any numeric expectation when it comes to tickets. >> the worst thing we could have is the perception that our officers are taking enforcement actions simply to hit an arbitrary number. >> peggy fox, 9news now. violent smart phone robberies are on the rise. the wireless industry just promised to create a data base in the next year and a half. if you report your smart phone stolen, its identifier number will go on the data base, blocking that device from ever being used again. the commitment came under pressure from the fcc and police chief like d.c.'s kathy lanier. they were out to protect

victims like michelle jackson. >> i love my phone. i can't live without it. when it got, young boy tried to grab my phone. i had a big fight with him. but it wouldn't wouldn't take my phone. >> one thief broke the jaw of a young mom pushing her baby's stroller on capitol hill, but if a call to police can render your priceless iphone a useless brick, experts hope that will go a long way toward closing the market for those stolen smart phones. new to a different consumer alert. the federal government proposed new rules aimed at giving homeowners more ways to avoiding foreclosure. mortgage companies would have to give you standardized monthly statements, have to warn you about changes to your interest rates or insurance. and they'd have to make good faith efforts to contact you if you are at risk of foreclosure and give you options to avoid you losing your home.

the government plans to finalize these changes by next january. a virginia man has pleaded guilty to running a fraudulent mortgage rescue business. he is 68-year-old howard. prosecutors say he had more than 1,000 clients while operating a business call, out of offices in vienna, virginia. he collected fees from his clients, but rarely did any actual work on modifying their mortgages. he will be sentenced in june. lesli, coming up tonight at , gsa, is it now go spend again? things are starting to heat up. congress getting into the investigation and the agency's new chief is running damage control with a video. all that tonight on 9news now at 7:00. >> oh boy, still ahead this hour, the national transportation safety board puts out new recommendations after this deadly hair show crash in nevada last fall. >> the winds are with us, we'll take you out with the

a vigil is just getting underway in reston tonight. calling for justice in the trayvon martin case. an hour ago, george zimmerman's lawyers are withdrawing from the case. the client admitted he shot and killed the unarmed teenager, but he contacted the special prosecutor in the case against their advice. last month, montgomery county police officers were able to nab three suspects who allegedly stole a gun and brought that weapon to wheaten high school. and as anny hong reports, they are crediting those arrests to their newest canine addition. >> police officers were running through this neighborhood chasing after a teen suspect they say broke into a home and stole a gun. the problem is, that gun was in this neighborhood in pieces. that's where lila comes in to help solve the crime. >> she knows she has one job to do and she's very good at it. and she loves to work. >> lila is the newest crime fighter for the montgomery county police department.

the two-year-old german shepherd is one of two firearm detection dogs that can do what officers can't do. >> her high drive, her wanting to please and just her strong work ethic. it's just, she's a great dog to work with. >> lila went through an intensive three month training course last fall with canine unit head trainer, mary davis, after arriving from europe. her only job is to defect firearms by zeroing in on one cent. >> signature odor we trained for is the post blast event of a firearm being shot. every firearm has to be fired. it cannot leave the factory without one round going through it. >> in this training exercise, lila shows us she's good at her job. she lets her handler know without touching it that the evidence isn't contaminated. that's exactly what she did on march 22 when she found a stolen gun that was disassembled and toss in the

wheaten neighborhood by a burglary suspect. >> the probability of success can be very low, but they are dedicated and the dogs are good. so when they get a chance to work a call like this, it's gratifying. >> in montgomery county, anny hong, 9news now. >> four pieces of the gun that lila found in all those locations helped police bring a solid case against three teenage students. the 17-year-olds were all charged as adults and face several burglary and gun related charges. a p51 mustang flies out of control into a crowd at last year's reno national championship air races. 11 people on the ground were killed and today, almost seven months to the day of the crash, the national transportation safety board is taking steps to make sure nothing like that ever happens again. >> our investigation found that this pilot in this airplane had never flown this fast on this course.
