defense. the martin family has been calling on prosecutors to charge zimmerman with murder. martin's parents spoke in washington d.c. where civil rights leaders met with u.s. attorney general eric holder. he says the justice department is looking into possible federal civil rights charges. police here in sanford are taking steps to keep the peace once the prosecutor makes her announcement. zimmerman is going to have to figure out his legal defense. the two attorneys representing him quit yesterday after he stopped talking to them. we don't know what charges zimmerman will face. we do know that it will not be capital murder. that went away when the special prosecutor opted not to take the case to a grand jury. in sanford, florida, randall pinkston. back to you. >> we are expecting to hear once again from trayvon's parents after the special prosecutor's announcement. they're right here in washington d.c. >> bruce leshan continues team coverage from the d.c. convention center. they had a lot to say earlier today, bruce.

>> reporter: yeah, they had a lot to say earlier and have actually spoken somewhat since then to the a.p. and told the associated press that these charges will help with the healing process, but they say they will not stop fighting until george zimmerman is convicted. we are expecting to hear from trayvon martin's parents right up here at about 6:15, sometime after that 6:00 news conference in florida, but they already have told us on camera that they are fully confident that justice will be served for trayvon. 44 days since their son died and trayvon martin's parents are hoping that this is the day that they will finally see charges. >> i'm hoping that i can get on my bending knees and speak to him through christ and let him know that justice was served, job well done, my son. >> reporter: trayvon's parents have been pushing for criminal counts against george zimmerman

in their son's death since february. >> for the last 44 days it has been a nightmare and this is coming from a mother's perspective. i have been up and down as if i office a roller coaster. -- i was on a roller coaster, but i know beyond a shadow of a doubt that justice will be served. >> reporter: the reverend al sharpton and his national action network have helped push trayvon's case. the network is holding its annual convention in d.c. and sharpton pushed back against criticism that he rushed to judgment against zimmerman. >> we are not seeking to convict anybody. we are seeking to stop them from acquitting someone without a trial. >> reporter: the martin family watched in shock tuesday as zimmerman's lawyers with drew from the case saying they had not heard from their client in days, even as zimmerman launched his own website and reached out on his own to fox

news and special prosecutor angela corey. >> the killer of trayvon martin is unaccounted for. we are concerned that he's a flight risk. >> reporter: now the new black panther party has reportedly placed a $10,000 bounty on george zimmerman's head and as you heard from randall pinkston, police down in sanford are preparing for possible civil disturbances or possible riots, but here trayvon martin's parents repeatedly urged people to show calm and the lawyers for the family said that people should take their cues from those parents and the calm that they have shown even as they grieve their son's death. lesli? >> they said they hope the way they're grieving can be a model for this country and the world. we'll have live coverage of the special prosecutor's expected

announcement of the charges against george zimmerman in the trayvon martin shooting case coming up at 6:00 on 9 news now. the search for an apartment takes a violent turn for two women in alexandria. the pair was attacked by a man after arriving at the building near eisenhower avenue and mill road. it happened yesterday evening after they answered an internet ad. peggy fox has the latest on the search for their attacker. >> reporter: well, alexandria police are hoping they're getting closer to catching the suspect. right now they're back inside the building searching for evidence and clues. it's been vacant for years, the odd building with an angled roof and square glass design sits and the next to i-495 on mill road. >> i've always seen the building abandon, but i would have never thought something like that would happen over here. >> reporter: after the american truckers association left the building's originals used to allow alexandria police officers to train inside.

now even though the sheriff's department and jail is right down the street it's become the scene of a crime. >> that's pretty bold. >> reporter: last night around 6:00 two women answered an ad for an apartment to rent. >> when they got there, they encountered a man who had told them to come on into the building. when they got to the front, it's an abandoned building and it kind of seemed odd to them. at that point the man grabbed them, pulled them into the building and started physically assaulting them. >> reporter: police say he hit them and grabbed them, but the women fought back and got away. they called police who spent three hours searching the building and the ground as long with the nearby eisenhower metro station but couldn't find the suspects. not only is the vacant building down the street from the jail, but up the street from that is the police department and the federal jail. >> you're not going to think a place this close to the police department that anyone would try to do anything along those lines because who would have

the guts to do that, but last night proved that are people out there, people that are that desperate for things. >> i think you just got to have more awareness, know where you're going, look at the location and the address before you go there and that's about the best thing you can do when replying to ads. >> reporter: make sure it's not an abandoned building first. >> absolutely. >> reporter: the suspect is a white man, between 20 and 30 years old, tall, thin wearing black pants accident long black coat, dark hair -- pants, long black coat, dark hair in a ponytail. somebody matching that description talked to news reporters this morning telling them that he had a key to that building. police have interviewed him and they have called him a person of interest, though no charges have been filed at this point. i'm peggy fox. a bank robbery in prince george's county took a bizarre turn today. it began with a holdup of the m m&t bank on campus way and largo this morning. one of the systems was arrested

during a traffic stop in new carrollton. a second suspect entered a nearby condo where he tied a bed sheet around his neck and attempted to hang himself. a new carrollton officer used a knife to cut the man down and officers on the ground caught him. the local police chief described it as an unbelievable and scary incident. it wasn't a dream. it wasn't your imagination. those were snowflakes, maybe even a little sleet in parts of your neighborhood today. topper, is our winter that wasn't turning into a regular old crazy d.c. spring? >> you know what's ironic? we had snow in october. now we have snow in april and nothing to show for it, which is i know is your kind of winter, derek. i wanted to show you this carefree rose. i've never seen one bloom this early. this is at least a month in advance. our azaleas are waning now. they've already peaked. let's talk about the wind because that's one ingredient that made it feel indeed like march today. 25 mile-per-hour wind gusts in

off the coast of indonesia today triggering widespread panic, worries about a tsunami. the 8.6 magnitude quake struck this morning, but fortunately there was nothing like the natural disaster of 7 1/2 years ago. the powerful earthquake led to massive evacuations all across southeast asia. civilians directed traffic as people ran for higher ground close to the strep and there was panic, women fainting, crowds emerying at mosques to pray. many feared the -- gathering at mosques to pray. many feared the worst because in 2004 a devastating quake and tsunami hit the same area and killed 230,000 people across the region. this man said felt the ground shake for nearly six minutes. >> lots of people screaming and running. everybody screaming that some earthquake is happening. >> reporter: warning alarms sounded across the indian ocean. in thailand schools interrupted classes. hospitals moved patients

outside and tourist areas near the coast were immediately place under a tsunami warning after a second 8.2 quake hit hours after the first one. >> aftershocks will go on for weeks or months, maybe as long as years. you wouldn't expect any more aftershocks this big. >> reporter: indonesia remains on alert, but as of now the president says there are no reports of death or serious damage. indonesian officials say the waves hitting the coast so far are small. the biggest is only a few feet high. we have breaking news in new jersey where a large brushfire is burning near the metlife stadium in the meadowlands. this is a live picture. look at that smoke. it can be seen all the way from the new jersey turnpike to parts of manhattan. local fire crews are asking for assistance from neighboring towns. so far no reports of injuries or evacuations. what sparked it? nobody is quite sure yet. prince william county

expected to announce charges against george zimmerman. zimmerman is the neighborhood watch captain who shot and killed the unarmed teenager during a violent confrontation six weeks ago. we'll carry that news conference coming up at 6:00. with the republican presidential nomination virtually sealed up, mitt romney toured connecticut and rhode island. now talk is turning to who the vice presidential candidate would be for romney. >> one name that's been widely bandied about is virginia's governor bob mcdonnell on. cbs this morning mcdonnell was asked what does the potential vp nominee need to bring to the ticket. >> i think it's got to be someone with the same vision as mitt romney that's going to focus on jobs and deficit reduction and a comprehensive vision for energy and can bring people together. i think we've got a president that's been dividing the country on everything from men versus women to rich versus the

middle class. that we don't need. we need people that are going to say we're all americans. we can do better than we've done and let's find a way to get together and work as americans to make the greatest country on earth even better. >> governor mcdom did say he is not looking to be -- mcdonnell did say he is the looking to be p nominee and says he's very -- to be the vp nominee and says he's very happy being governor of virginia. for the second straight day the president called on congress to pass what he says is a more balanced tax cody, the one proposed by -- code, the one proposed by billionaire warren buffett. >> next week members of congress will have a chance to vote on the buffett rule and it's simple. you make more than $1 million a year, if not you have $1 million, but if you make more than $1 million a year, you should pay at least the same percentage of your income in taxes as middle class families do. >> as he was making his remarks, the president was surrounded by millionaire and

a display of some red shoes expected to attract some big crowds to the national museum of american history. it's dorothy's ruby red slippers from the wizard of oz and they are the featured items in a new smithsonian exhibit called american story. the display is a new chronology

we are following breaking news this afternoon in the trayvon martin shooting. right now we are standing by for a 6 p.m. news conference where the special prosecutor in florida is expected to announce charges against george zimmerman. zimmerman is the neighborhood watch captain who shot and killed the unarmed teenager during a violent confrontation six weeks ago. again, we're going to have live coverage of that news conference at 6:00. one of the area's best known and most successful asian business leaders invited d.c. council member marion barry for a sitdown today. the purpose was to try to smooth over relations after barry's unfortunate comments regarding the asian business leaders in his own ward 8 neighborhood. this is a story you'll only see on news 9. bruce johnson was there. calm, collected, what kind of mood was it? >> tony chang, he owns the famous restaurant in the mid of chinatown.

he of hoping to -- middle of twine chinatown. he was hoping to build -- chinatown. he was hoping to build some bridges today. ward 8, there are only 197 food establishments here including liquor stores, gas stations and school cafeterias. across the river in affluent ward 2 there are 1,960 places that sell or serve food. d.c. councilman marion barry created a firestorm last week when he singled out asian carry- outs calling them dirty places and declaring they had to go. what were they saying in the beginning after his words? >> we say why mayor barry say that? >> reporter: tony chang, one of the the best known asian business leaders, has had numerous cell phone conversations with barry since those remarks. >> he always liked asian people. >> reporter: the two have been friends over 40 years. chang credits barry with the thriving chinatown that we know today, for the arts, to the apartments to the thriving

gallery place metro corridor. it all started with barry as mayor. >> 20 years ago nobody wanted to come to chinatown. he make it happen. >> reporter: i called chang for reaction to barry's criticism of the asian mom and pop stores. chang in turn invited barry to join him for the interview and talk of how to mend fences with asian businesses. chang said he'll soon put together a meeting of all the prominent asian businessmen in the district with the ward 8 councilman. barry said he'll be there but don't look for a second apology. >> i want the mayor and me and all the community in a meeting together. i want him in that. he not mean that. >> reporter: does that make sense? >> there's another aspect of that. >> reporter: do you go along with that? >> move already apologized. >> reporter: barry said he'll unveil some profiles of his own to the business leaders. >> it's a beautiful restaurant, better food, more respect on both sides.

>> derek, marion barry left open the door and he's probably going to apologize in private. he wasn't going to apologize in front of the camera and give us that. the over thing he had to acknowledge is these mom and pop stores, asian, black, whatever are incredibly undercapitalized in ward 8 and will need some help probably from the d.c. government to make the front of these stores look better. >> wasn't one of the big arguments was that the asian leaders didn't want to be singled out. >> absolutely right. the other thing, when marion barry came out of prison, it was the asian community that stepped up, gave him a dinner right at tony chang's place and gave him cash money. they would not abandon him when a lot of marion barry's friends were long gone. district mayor vincent gray is launching a new campaign to prevent bullying citywide. he'll announce details at a showing of the new film bully tonight. the film was shown last night for members of the national education association. the president of nea joined us on the 6 a.m. newscast where he talked about

the movie's powerful message. >> i don't think anyone can watch this movie and come away unchanged. you're going to see and view the whole concept of bullying in a very different light and i think it will encourage people to take action. >> bully premiers this friday in washington. mayor gray says he intends to appoint a task forcing as part of a four-step plan designed to prevent intimidation and harassment in d.c. schools. two maryland high school lacrosse players suspended last year won their appeal. the easton high school students were suspended for having a pen knife and lighter in their lacrosse bags saying they used those items to repair their lacrosse sticks, but the school board said the items were dangerous. now the state board ruled county officials did not use proper discretion in suspending these students. the boobies bracelet case is now being argued in front of a federal appeals court. the easton, pennsylvania school district suspended two students

is caught on tape some dramatic and chilling video showing a washington state convenience store clerk pegging for his life and then strag -- begging for his life and then struggling with an armed robber. the clerk wearing a black baseball cap at first begs the robber not to shoot but then decides to risk it all and get the gun. the robber made off with a small amount of cash and police say it was the second time in a week the same clerk was held up apparently by the same gunman. another store employee says the

clerk quit his job after the second robbery. >> not surprising. police are trying to identify more than a dozen teenages are caught on tape swarming a portland, oregon gas station stealing whatever they could. surveillance cameras captured the 16 teens grabbing things off store shelves, stuffing things in their purses and pockets. the clerk called 911 and the teens run out, but a handful come back and start throwing things at him and another worker. eventually the clerk grabbed a bat and scared the group off. let's get out to the land of high speed chases and news choppers known as los angeles. after speeds reached more than 100 miles an hour, police cornered a suspect on the 101 last night but it didn't end. police were forced to fire nonlethal beanbags at the guy because he got combative and it took more than four officers to get him in a cruiser and haul him off. looks like more than four out there. she was once a golden girl. now she's the star of hot in cleveland, 90-year-old comedic

actress betty white joined twitter. >> she has nearly 100,000 followers. white is only following 40 other accounts including lady gaga, rihanna and president barack obama. one of her first few tweets was a little saucy. white refers to her new prank show off their rockers being in the same time slot as american idol. she tweeted hey, ryan seacrest, i've always dreamed of sharing a night with you. the creator of the simpsons is talking about his real life inspiration for the town of springfield. matt groehne says the town is actually springfield oregon. the show has now been on the air for 23 years. groehne noted when he of young father knows best was set in a -- when he was young father knows best was set in a town named springfield. it is, in fact, next to eugene, oregon there. you go. there's a lot of springfields
