george zimmerman is behind bars this morning. the neighborhood watch captain turned himself in last night after being charged with second kg murder in the killing of trayvon martin. he's expected to make his first court appearance today. manuel gallegus is if sanford, florida, with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. this morning in sanford george zimmerman is being held in the jail complex behind us. the personal prosecutor is not elaborating on why she decided to charge him with second-degree murder. george zimmerman ducked into the seminole county jail with a jacket over his head for his first night behind bars. his lawyer says he'll likely enter a not guilty plea today during his arraignment. >> filed an information charging george zimmerman with murder in the second degree. >> reporter: zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder more than six weeks after trayvon martin was killed. >> wanted an arrest and we got it. and i say thank you. thank you, lord.

thank you, jesus. >> reporter: the neighborhood watchman says he shot the unarmed 17-year-old in self-defense. his lawyers say part of their strategy is to argue zimmerman acted under stand your ground law. zimmerman's first court appearance is expected to take place here at the seminole county jail complex. his lawyer says he's worried it will be tough for his client to get a fair trial. >> i ask not to prejudge george zimmerman and please don't prejudge the criminal justice system. it's going to work. >> reporter: zimmerman was questioned the night martin was shot but never arrested. that decision sparked protest and calls for justice from around the country. angela corey is the special prosecutor in the case and says none of that influenced her decision. >> we don't prosecute by public pressure or by petition. we prosecute based on the facts of any given case. >> reporter: george zimmerman faces life in prison if he's convicted.

zimmerman's lawyer is asking the public not to jump to any conclusions about his client's guilt and is also planning to ask for bail. michelle, back to you. >> manuel gallegus in sanford, florida, thank you. the man charged in last week's deadly shooting rampage at a christian college in oakland, california, is speaking out. one goh said in an ainterview, quote, i am sorry, but that word doesn't helped. when asked what happened, he said, i only remember parts of that day and it is too hard to talk about. he also said, i want to see my family. but i think they don't want to see me. police say goh is a former student at the university and was targeting a school official. he's been charged with killing seven people but has not yet entered a plea. it must be an earthquake season because two more hits this morning. 5.8 magnitude followed by a 6.9

rattled off in the gulf of california. yesterday afternoon a 5.9 magnitude hit about 160 mile off the coast of oregon. there are no reports of damage. a strong 6.5 quake also rattled mexico wednesday, centered in the western part of the country. the caused buildings to sway 200 miles away in mexico city. there were no reports of injuries or damage. those quakes followed the ones that shook indonesia which triggered tsunami fears. five people died after two massive ittemblors hit the area yesterday. barry petersen explains why they got lucky this time. >> reporter: there was panic as people ran into the streets or fled on whatever vehicles. hospitals were quickly evacuated, but in the end almost no serious damage. call it a miracle after an 8.6 magnitude earthquake followed by an 8.2 aftershock. it did trigger rapid tsunami

warnings that stretched as far away as south africa but no major waves developed. the warnings came fast because of a new system. that one hit on december 26th, 2004, generating a tsunami that in some areas was almost 100 feet high and killed 230,000 people across the same indian ocean region. this time was different due to the nature of undersea earthquakes. in 2004 two tech tonic plates rammed into each other, causing a massive upthrust generating the shock waves that triggered the tsunami. this time was different. the plate slid owe one another, dramatically reducing shock waves and the risk of a tsunami. so, people escape with little more than badly rattled nerves but in an area so prone to earthquakes, the next time they may not be as lucky.

barry petersen, beijing. a u.n.-brokered cease-fire in syria appears to be holding for now. it began this morning and so far there are no reports of violence. but activists in major cities say syrian troops and tanks have not begun pulling out, which is part of the peace plan agreement. all eyes are on north korea which could defy international warnings and launch a long-range rocket as early as today. japan is on high alert, ready to shoot down the rocket with pat rot missiles if it veers off course. secretary of state hillary clinton once again warned north korea that the launch would violate several u.n. security council resolutions. north korea has said the launch will happen between today and monday. jury selection begins in greensboro, north carolina, in the trial of former senator and vice presidential candidate john edwards. he's charged with federal campaign finance violations that could send him to prison for 30 years. edwards is accused of sending

millions of dollars to hide his mistress during his bid for the democratic nomination in 2008. with rick santorum's campaign a memory and mitt romney in the driver's seat for the gop nomination, wednesday marked the unofficial start of the general election campaign. romney and president obama opened up the nearly seven-month-long race by trading attacks with one another. >> and if i'm the next president of the united states, i'll go to work to get american women good jobs, rising incomes and grows businesses. >> mitt romney spent a second straight day campaigning with women who owned businesses, trying to gain the support of women voters. polls show his standings was hurt with them during the primaries. >> i was hurt listening to the president saying republicans are waging a war against women. the real war on women is by the president's failed economic policy. >> the president took a direct
