recommended approval for new breast screening technology. it's called u-system somsv automated breast ultrasound. she joins us now to talk about why this technology will help patients especially those with dense breasts. doctor, thank you for being here. you're excited about this and you call it a game changer. >> this is a game changer andrea. we used to be that mammography or screening were breast cancer was a -- for breast cancer was a one size fates all and mammography is very important. we know many women are saved because of it but in women with dense breasts almost the perfect storm. their mammograms, their breast tissue is light, breast cancers are white and it can be very hard to dump rate the cancer from the normal breast tissue and a third of women with breast cancer and dense breasts have normal mammograms. with i need another toll and this is exactly that tool. it's using ultrasound which
5:53 am
increases the contrast between a breast cancer and dense breast tissue. and in the study there was 25% additional cancer detection in women with dense breasts who had screening ultra sounds. >> you have ultra sounds in your arsenal, what make this is different? >> that's a great question. it takes about a half hour to do the entire exam. so it's not something that we can integrate into the screenings environment but now we have a quick easy efficient way with less callbacks, less false positives to be able to find the otherwise hidden cancers, so we know the cancers are smaller in screening and are curable cancers but clinically significant cancers. so this gives us the opportunity to find them, treat theme and cure women. very exciting. >> two things you mentioned about false positives and the callbacks and we've been doing stories about that and faulty mammography for allowing this
5:54 am
to happen. the anxiety in women and then the cost of the callbacks and the false positives. this can make that much of a difference. >> it certainly does make that much of a difference in that it finds more cancers. there will be more callbacks, you can't find more cancers without looking for more cancers. when you look you also find like j.c. hayward had one malignant cancer and one benign mass. but importantly we're finding these small important curable breast cancers that would ultimately be detected larger, bigger, node positive, he has curable. >> still waiting for approval but if this is approved a woman comes to you for screening and you know she has dense breasts. do you start with this? or do you start with standard mammography? >> mammography is the standard. we start with mammography. this is for women who have a

normal mammogram and dense breast tissue. the 3d automated breast ultrasound. it's painless and it uses no radiation and you have an extra level of assurance that cancer is not in your breasts. >> any woman can have this or you adjust to it for those with dense breasts? >> it is only for women with dense breasts. mammography is aened withful very effect -- wonderful very effective tool for everyone but it's sufficient in women who have nonden breasts. it's a -- dense breasts. if the cancers don't hide there's no white breast tissue but in the situation where the cancers hide because of the lack of contrast with the cancer and breast tissue we now have a tool to find these additional cancers. so it will only be for women with dense breasts and you can't tell if you have dense breasts by feeling, looking, it's only something that you can tell from a mammogram. something that your readiness needs to help you. >> thank you for telling us about what she calls a game changer.
