had yesterday. in fact reports of snow showers and nobelest and graupel -- snow pellets and graupel. the showers -- we cleared out overnight and this morning. that's allowed temperatures to drop into the 30s and low 40s. had the winds gone dead calm it'd be even colder. we have some areas below freezing to the west where some freeze warnings are in effect. as far as windchills this is why i think you need jackets this morning. windchills down in the mid 30s in fact 33 down in gaithersburg. feels like 37 here in washington. and 38 across the bay in cambridge and again we're going into the low 60s but the breeze will be up. let's go to monika samtani now, she's got your timesaver traffic at 6:00 this thursday morning. i do. good morning everybody. i'm happy to they generally speaking everybody has been fine this morning. if you're heading out you know that's always an issue in some delays but i'm happy to say there are nomoi jar problems to report outside. here are the maps on the
6:01 am
southbound sid of 270 going about 48 miles per hour out of urbanna. but the good news is there are no major incidents to report. all the way down to the point where the lanes divide. in fact let's take a live look at 270 here at montrose road and again traffic still moving pretty well down to the point where the lanes divide. pretty much the same thing on 355 and the great seneca highway as well. let's go back over to the maps this time to the north side of the beltway. looking great out of college park into silver spring. a bit of slow traffic forming here in silver spring. no problems on 29 or 95. we'll take a live last look at the southbound side of 935 at route 32. looking great out of baltimore. coming up in my next report, we'll go over to southern maryland at 6:12. back to you guys. thank you monika. at 6:01 breaking news from temple hills maryland. >> prince george's county police are investigating a shooting involving an officer. this was along good hope avenue. delia goncalves joins us live from the area with more. what do we know so far? >> reporter: we know police were called to the scene just
6:02 am
after 3:00 this morning for a domestic disturbance inside the apartment complex right off of 3100 block of good hope avenue here in temple hills. now we know the officer confronted the male suspect inside a parking lot though it's unclear exactly what led to the gunfire. but we do know and it has been confirmed that the officer fired his weapon. the good news in this situation here is that no one was struck. the officer and that suspect are okay. the suspect we're told is in custody at this hour. police still here on the scene trying to determine if that suspect indeed was armed and had a weapon on him as well and they're trying the figure out what led to the confrontation that led to the officer to pull out his service weapon and fire his gun. now according to the basic research that i did just on the way to the breaking news scene, this appears to make the fourth police involved shooting in prince george's county since january this year alone. in fact, this is the second
6:03 am
police involved shooting this week. the other one happened on monday in landover. that was a deadly police involved shooting. the good news here though, everyone will be okay. we'll have much more on this breaking news scene in temple hills at 6:30. for now we're live in temple hills, back to you mike. >> thanks delia goncalves live this morning. we'll stay with her and find out more. nationals fans have a reason to be optimistic today. the team has its home opener today and they are tied for first place in their division in the national league. >> first pitch is set for 1:05 this afternoon against the reds. joining us andrew pepper the team's chief operating officer, he is at nationals park to tell us just how excited you are about the great way the nats have started. good morning andy. >> good morning. we got a big day here at nationals park. it's going to be a beautiful day in the 60s. so the team is back in town. they are 4-2 and it's opening day and we're excited. i mean we say it's a new day. a new edge and a new
6:04 am
personality to this team. there's a little swagger down her on south capitol. check it out today. >> there's a good confluence of things happening. our ace is back, he hit 98 on the gun this year already. that's a good thing. plus we have mr. werth his bat starting to get hot. >> yeah. everything's falling into place at the right time. >> yeah. well the team is hitting -- you know werth. adam laroche and ian desmond have been hitting great. today at nationals park we have gonzalez in a full house. we have standing room only still selling here at the park. it's a 1:00 game and take the metro and come down. we'll have 41,000 plus with standing room only temperature first 20,000 fans get a curly w cap. >> the food is always the best. that's all mike has been talking about all among long. >> thans andy. >> we've got some -- well, we'll see you at the park. take care. >> keep smiling. >> okay. in other news this morning it's
6:05 am
just about 6:# 5. he has admitted to shooting and killing an unarmed 17-year-old boy and this morning george zimmerman is now behind bars 45 days after trayvon martin's death. the 28-year-old was booked yesterday on second degree murder charges. and he will face a judge later this morning in sanford, florida. that is when zimmerman's lawyer will likely request a bond hearing. trayvon's parents are in d.c. when they learned of the arrest yesterday. they said this is the first step on a long road to justice. >> we wanted nothing more than, nothing less. we just wanted an arrest. and we got it. and i say thank you. >> now george zimmerman a neighborhood watchman who claims he was attacked by martin who was unarmed. they maintain he only opened fire in self-defense. andrea? mike, even though george zimmerman has been charged there are still some questions surrounding just how this happened. i'm joined by analyst and
6:06 am
contributor for the "huffington post" and thegrio.com edward williams. >> a pleasure to be with you. >> the special prosecutor is charging george zimmerman with second degree murder. why? >> this was the most brilliant part of this entire situation. as tragic as this situation is because it shows how egregious the crime was. this is a man who got our his car who essentially for all instants and purposes hunted this child. the second degree murder child i think was the prosecutor's way of saying this was not a brawl. this is this was not a fight in a bar, the young boy was unarmed and he was innocent. armed with skittles and an iced tea so the second degree murder charge is really an example of how egregious the crime was. >> how difficult is this going to prove? yes, he had skittles and iced tea but it was dark, george zimmerman was in his community and he has the law stand your
6:07 am
ground law on his side. >> it's interesting because a part of what angela corey said yesterday is that the stand your ground law may not apply in this case. in fact, the stand your grand law was perhaps apply to trayvon martin. a lot of ways trayvon martin had the right to be where he was. and was put upon by george zimmerman and to that end, i think it will be interesting to see whether or not the defense will actually have a credible stand your ground law charge for them. >> putting mara in at this stage of game, how hurtful is that to the defense? do they have to play catchup because zimmerman's old lawyers are gone? >> i think definitely so. what was interesting and the interviews with the new attorney, the tone was completely different. his approach was completely different. it wasn't -- it wasn't such an aggressive defense of george zimmerman. it was an acceptance that based on a preponderance of the evidence, the prosecution and an investigation both at the federal level and at the state
6:08 am
level had ended up with a second degree murder charge. that andrea makes me think they have information now that we don't have. that moans that they probably won't be that difficult to actually bring the man to justice. >> we'll hopefully have a fair trial for everyone's sake. good to have you here with us. >> thank you so much. it is 6:08 and jessica doyle is here, she is watching your money. and some good news from gas at the pump? i just paid $80 to fill my suv. please? spend some good news my way. >> there's a little bit of good news and it could become a lot of good news. i know you want some relief at the pump and i know people at home do and it bay the on the way -- may be on the way. now for what it's worth prices are falling short of the record highs. some had feared headed into the peak summer driving season. our partners at "usa today" report that prices have been holding at a national average of $3.92 a gallon over the past week. that's below last year's high
6:09 am
of $3.99 and 2008's record of $4.11. in our area aaa says gas prices are averaging $4.04 a gallon this morning. of course that's higher than the national average but it is down a cent from in time last year -- this time last year. maybest a trend. but we're getting some bad news about foreclosures across the country. new data shows more homes are ending up in foreclosure. this is setting stage for a surge in repossessions this year. a factor that lowers everyones real estate values. realty tracks says if number of homes receiving first time foreclosure notices rose 7% in march from the previous march. next time you order a pizza. would you like cheese or a hot dog in your crust? what? that's a question you soon may be hearing when you order a pie from pizza hut. take a look at this thing. not only is there a hot dog in the crust, look at that. you also get mustard drizzled over the top of it. the tot hog pete s -- hot dog
