martin was murder, not self- defense. >> the big issue was the police didn't do what you expect the police to do if somebody shot. they didn't even do what they would do if they shot somebody. >> i think they would have came quicker had he been white. >> reporter: college student jermaine bowden says he's been racially profiled by police and said he felt just the way he imagines trayvon martin must have felt. >> it's the worst to know that i'm not doing anything and just to get stopped, it's the worst. >> reporter: zimmerman grew up in this house in manassas and some people around here think that he has been treated unfairly. >> i think he's already been convicted by the press. i think everybody blew it out of proportion. >> reporter: the ashton avenue diner is less than a mile from zimmerman's boyhood home. >> the press has manipulated it the way they wanted it to go and i feel bad for everybody involved. >> reporter: not that everyone here thinks the shooting was justified. >> he was told, mr. zimmerman,

do not follow him. do not do anything. just let it go, but he took it upon himself. >> why does neighborhood watch people carry loaded guns with them? they're not trained like the police officers. >> reporter: tragedy has once again led america to confront its racial divide. >> if trayvon would have been white, this probably wouldn't have been a story at all. >> it's not going to solve much. >> reporter: bruce leshan, 9 news now. >> the usa today gallup poll found nearly 3/4 of african americans believe racial bias was a major factor in the killing and that zimmerman would have been arrested earlier if he shot a white person. only 1/3 of whites shared that view. in our area today a wild pitch ended a wild home opener for the washington nationals and thankfully it ended in the nats favor. derek mcginty is at the stadium, his first home opener, with more on the game.

>> reporter: if i didn't know better, i would say this was too good to be true. think about it, great weather, sunshine, sold out nats park for home opener, great pitching, nats win. hey, i think a lot of the fans around here are starting to think could this be the new normal for our nats? we don't know, but kristen berset is here to tell us how today's game worked out. >> it was an amazing game. the nats have never finished above .500. since think came from montreal last year was the closest they got finishing third in the nl east. it seems now they're building off that success from last year. let's look at the game, the crowd enjoying all the pomp and circumstance that comes with a home opener, the excitement, just the buzz in the atmosphere and then it was a good showing from the youngster gio gonzalez, seven his lucky number today, seven scoreless innings, seven strikeouts, but it was the ending of the game that stole the show today.

game tied, basings loaded, bottom of the 10th -- bases loaded, bottom of 10th, alfredo simone throws a wild pitch. ryan zimmerman comes in for the win. the nats win this one 3-2 and go to 5-2 on the season, one of the best starts in franchise history. dave owens was among the fans today enjoying the game. he joins us now out on the concourse. what was it like? >> reporter: actually dave's connection has gone dead, but it's okay because we can talk about the fan energy, the fact that the president's race and teddy lost again. i had some thoughts that maybe because of the new season the new attitude, the natitude as they're calling it, maybe this was teddy's time in the sun, but apparently it was not. later on we'll have more at nats park including an effort to eat a burger that is so big it has to be named after the nats' best player. back to you in the studio. >> we've been talking about

this strasburger. we'll need to see this thing being eaten. thanks. athletics may not be the only thing suffering at the university of maryland in the coming year and it traces back to the budget battle in annapolis. >> reporter: i'm scott broom at university of maryland where 25,000 students woke up this morning to the completely unexpected news they might be facing a tuition increase of 10 to 13% because of what's being called maryland's doomsday budget. >> it really, really sucks. >> reporter: it could be an extra $900 next year for most. >> i might not be here. >> reporter: the blame is all directed at maryland's legislature which let the clock run out on its legislative session monday night fighting over gambling without passing a tax package needed to fund proposed spending reverting instead to a doomsday budget with steep cuts across government. the university suspect's share

is 63 million. at the university of maryland, scott broom, 9 news now. >> here's more unwelcome news for maryland students. a new report by a consumer credit management company finds maryland college students are carrying more student honey debt than any other student says in the -- loan debt than any other students in the country. in virginia the average debt is $31,704 those are well above the national average of $29,523. the government has a new tool for families looking to pare down those costs. the consumer financial protection bureau launched this site this week. it lets you compare as many as three schools at a time. so let's say you live in mayor and your child is considering heading to -- maryland and your child is considering heading to college park or george mason in virginia. you can see the average amount students end up borrowing in maryland is just over $13,000. at gw it's just more than

the virginia state capitol building has been selected as one of 10 influential buildings in america. the building will be showcased on a pbs television special set to air next year. a program called 10 buildings that changed america. virginia's capitol be was first occupied in 1788 and has influenced the design of dozens of other buildings, everything from the u.s. capitol to banks all across the country. a democratic strategist is backtracking on some comments she made about mitt romney's wife. >> guess what? his wife has actually never worked a day in her life. she's never really dealt with the kinds of economic issues that a majority of the women in this country are facing in terms of how do we feed our

kids? how do we send them to school and how do we -- why do we worry about their future? >> that set off a firestorm of controversy and hillary rosen issued a statement this afternoon saying her comments about ann romney were poorly chosen. romney says raising the couple's five sons was hard work and that her husband considered her job more important than his own. frederick county public schools will close on may 18th because of the g-8 summit held at nearby camp david, this at the request of the county sheriff. he cited safety concerns and congestion with all those world leaders and news media traveling through the county. the school system says those ap tests and athletics, drama productions and proms will go on as scheduled. steve? >> reporter: a lot of folks can't pass up adair, so we dade our kristin fisher to take on

unleaded to 3.91 a gallon. here in the greater washington area we are averaging $4.04 and if you think people will only pump your gas for you in new jersey, think again. a local station known for its full service may soon be letting you do everything yourself. >> reporter: when you think of pumping gas, this is what you think here. you come here and get your hands a little dirty except here they do it all for you at least for three more days. after 51 years in business offering full service including pumping the gas, checking your oil and washing your windshield, it's all coming to an end on monday. >> i'm sorry to see it go. >> reporter: the hall and hall automotive service center on fort hunt road in alexandria may be the last totally full service station in the area, but rising gas prices has forced the family-owned business to get rid of full service. >> when the gas prices get higher, the credit card fees,

>> reporter: really big home opener out here for the nats today at nationals park in washington d.c. they beat the cincinnati reds come from behind win 3-2 in extra innings, but setting aside that contest for a moment, there was another contest of even greater import. you see, in one corner it was kristin fisher. she's 5' 6, weighs in 110 and in the other corner the strasburger, 8 pounds, 1 foot wide and let me tell you it was a bit of a mismatch. >> reporter: i'm kristin

fisher at the red porch, the home of the brand-new strasburger. it is an 8-pound mega burger and i'm about to give it my best shot. >> today's the first inaugural day for the strasburger. >> reporter: in theory i could be the first person to finish the strasburger. >> my money is on you. >> reporter: oh, my gosh. are you serious? >> that's all you. >> reporter: come on, you guys didn't really think that i'd be able to eat this whole thing all by myself. 8 pounds, this thing wouldn't fit inside my stomach. there's no way. so i've endissed the help of this gingus family and the blake family. let's do this. cheers. >> it's prime chuck, brisket and short rib and we put it together and build it up in this really big monster 8-pound burger. >> reporter: we've almost eaten the entire thing except for trevor. he's still working on a little bit. in case you're wondering how much the strasburger cost, the bill is $59 for an 8-pound burger. at nats park i'm kristin fisher, fox 5 news.

let's get a high five, guys. way to go. >> reporter: sharing the strasburg iris the only way to go. you have to -- strasburger is the only way to go. you have to share. let's be impressed by the 3-2 win, soldout crowd. >> reporter: let's look at the highlights from today. the big excited crowd enjoying the pomp and circumstance of opening day, gio gonzalez, the offseason acquisition lived up to the fanfare, seven scoreless innings, seven strikeouts, giving up just two hits. today he showed he can do it all. also at the dish in bottom of the 5th gio knocked one to left field for his first career major league hit. he was all smiles. the crowd gave him a standing ovation and then later adam laroche gets a single knocking in two runners. nats get on the board first, but they would let that lead
