trayvon martin on february 26th. defense attorney mark o'mara chose not to seek bond at this time. >> with the attempt to truly calm this case down rather than demand a presentation of evidence which might only increase the fervor. >> reporter: trayvon martin's parents are relieved zimmerman is behind bars. that this is just first base. so we have a long journey in order to finish what we set out to do and that's to get justice for trayvon. >> reporter: for now zimmerman remains at the county jail in the criminal justice complex being kept apart from other inmates. prosecutors say they will make the case that zimmerman committed second degree murder. >> we looked at all the evidence. we applied the law and based on our experience, we felt that was the appropriate case. >> reporter: zimmerman said he acted in self-defense under florida's stan your ground law. that law al -- stand your ground law. that law allows the use of deadly force in a fight. >> under florida law that

second degree murder charge could land zimmerman a life sentence. his arraignment is set for may 29th. polls indicate americans are deeply divided by race when it comes to the trayvon martin killing. a new online poll from reuters cites 91% of african americans think he was killed unjustly. just 35% of whites agree. polls from usa today and the washington post found similar divides and today my colleague bruce johnson found a wide range of views here in the d.c. region. >> i think the issue was the police didn't do what you would expect the police to do if somebody shot -- i mean they didn't even do what they would do if they shot somebody. >> i think they would have came to fruition a little quicker had he been white. >> i think he's already been convicted by the press. i think already blew it out of proportion. >> a usa today gallup poll found nearly 3/4 of african americans believe racial bias played a major factor in the killing and zimmerman would

have been arrested earlier for shooting a white person. only 1/3 of whites agreed with that assessment. prince george's county police say this morning's shooting involving an officer happened inside the building. this happened at 3 a.m. when officers were called to the 3100 block of good hope avenue in temple hills, maryland. the call was for breaking and entering but on the scene officers were confronted by a man fleeing from the building. >> the man ran from police, hid behind a parked car in this very dark parking lot and then popped up acting in a bizarre manner. he threw himself on the ground and then reached for and acted as if he had a weapon. >> that's when the officer opened fire. the suspect was not hit by a bullet. police took him into custody. officers then searched the apartment and found a man who had been stabbed several times. he's now in the hospital with life threatening injuries. police have charged the suspect

with attempted murder. alexandria police say this is the man who assaulted two women while they were looking at an apartment for rent. officers arrested 23-year-old james click for the crime late last night. the assault happened tuesday evening in this abandoned building on mill road near eisenhower avenue. police say click pulled the women into the building and tried to touch them. they were able to fight him off. click is now charged with two counts of abduction and assault. in maryland they are calling it the doomsday budget and today as the hangover faded from the failed legislative session earlier this week, the gravity of the situation is truly shocking to a lot of people starting at the university of maryland where the board of regents may be forced to pass a steep tuition hike as early as tomorrow. scott broom is in college park. >> reporter: 25,000 students woke up this morning here at the university of maryland to the completely unexpected news, that they might face a tuition

increase next year of 10 to 13%. >> it really, really sucks. >> reporter: it could be an extra $900 next year for most. >> i might not be here. >> reporter: the blame is all directed at maryland's legislature which let the clock run out on its legislative session monday night fighting over gambling without passing a tax passage needed to fund proposed spending reverting instead to a doomsday budget with steep cuts across government. the university suspect's share is 63 million. today governor martin o'malley fumed about it to 9 news now mike hydek. >> for crying out loud, there's more important things at stake here than whether or not we have a sixth site for gambling in the state of maryland, five, six, i mean none of that matters as much to me as making sure that our children are given the best education they can. >> reporter: the student government immediately passed a resolution. >> i would ask him to call back the legislature and ask them to pass a responsible revenue

package. >> reporter: so it's doomsday budget time here at the university of maryland and the same thing may be coming to local school districts, police departments, even dog catchers a lot quicker than anybody expected thanks to the legislature that couldn't get its act together in the final hours. at the university of maryland scott broom, 9 news now. >> governor o'malley tells 9news he wants a special session and is willing to call for one, but only once he knows the house and senate leadership have talked with their members and come to a consensus on what they could accomplish during such a session. more than 360 firefighters from 23 states are now working to contain the wildfires in virginia. right now several fires are burning throughout the state and the forest service says they've charred nearly 17,000 acres. the biggest one is still in allegany county. it burned 7,000 acres by itself, another in page county now stretching 6 miles long and has charred more than 5,000 acres.

large fires are also still burning in craig and shenandoah counties. >> hopefully those firefighters can get a break from mother nature. the winds the past few days have really complicated things. top, will that change? >> the good news is the winds will diminish, bad news nothing significant in terms of rainfall on the horizon. let's start with the fact we're looking at diminishing winds and a colder night, frost and freeze warnings in effect, frost advisories for montgomery county, and virginia county from loudoun county and fauquier county north and west and another freeze warning in effect for the mountains. with the winds dying down you folks in cumberland and oakland will be down in the low to mid- 20s tonight. let's talk about temperatures. we're looking at temperatures generally in the 50s, 58 downtown, 54 gaithersburg, 54 frederick. it's already 43 in oakland, still 60 in fredericksburg. for tonight clear skies, cold, winds diminish. bring in the plants 32 to 42

the district will now have just one occupy d.c. camp, but that's because one group is packing up. instead the protestors at freedom plaza voted to merge with the camp at mcpherson square. the reason is because the permit allowing protestors to camp in freedom plaza expires the end of this month and the group isn't sure if it's going to be renewed. the proposed metro fare hikes we've told you about for months are 1 step closer to reality. the metro finance committee unanimously improved the increases today. under the plan the average peak rail fare would go up by 5.7%. bus fares would rise by 10 cents and an extra dollar would be charged any time someone uses a paper farecard. the proposals also eliminate the peak of the peak surcharge and would add one day and 28 day rail passes. the man heads to the full board for a vote.

big crowds today at nationals park as well for the nationals home opener. in fact, it was an official sellout, half as many as the nats had all of last year and the home team fans got what they came to see. >> reporter: i'm kristen berset at nationals park. the nationals home opener wrapping up today as they take on the cincinnati reds and get the big win in front of a sellout crowd. you know, the nats only sold out two games l year, so this kind of shows the buzz surround -- last year, so this kind of shows the buzz surrounding this

team. looking at the highlights, the crowd enjoying the pomp and circumstance that goes along with opening day. gio gonzalez making up for his poor showing last week in chicago. seven was his lucky number, seven scoreless innings, seven strikes, giving up just two hits and zero walks. he got his first big hit today and the nats had a two-run lead heading into the 9th inning, but they lost that lead. we go to the 10th. alfredo simone throws a wild pitch to roger bernadina. ryan zimmerman comes in and scores and that is how the nats win their home opener, 3-2 over cincinnati, hey, a win is a win. the nats now go 5-2 on the season, one of the best starts in franchise history. now this series against cincinnati is four games long. so we'll see if they can get the sweep. from nats park i'm kristen berset. >> sweep would be nice. gas prices fell overnight in the d.c. metro. the average price for a gallon

of regular is now $4.04. that's down a penny from yesterday, but up 19 cents over the last month and just six cents shy from the all time record. it is those kind of increases that could end a blast from the past beloved by an entire community. rising gas prices are causing a virginia station to pull the plug on a type of service you're hard pressed to find anywhere anymore. peggy fox has the story from hall and hall automotive in alexandria. >> reporter: when you think of pumping gas, this what is you think of. you come here and get your hands a little dirty. >> excuse me. let me help you. >> reporter: oh, except here they do it all for you at least for three more days. after 51 years in business offering full service including pumping the gas, checking your oil and washing your windshield -- >> it will never be this clean again. >> reporter: -- it's all coming to an end on monday. >> you come in and they check your oil for you, do your windows. nobody does that anymore, but everything has to come to an end. >> reporter: the hall and hall

automotive service center on fort hunt road in alexandria may be the last totally full service station in the area, but rising gas prices has forced tom harvey whose family has owned it 51 years to finally do what most of the other service stations did by the 1980s and get rid of full service. >> it was really difficult to decide that we're not going to do this any longer and it just really came down to pure economics. gas isn't going to be going down in price any time soon. >> reporter: general manager mark bentland says the station has been losing money selling gasoline because with higher prices, credit card costs and taxes go up as well. >> i'm sorry to see it go really, just sorry to see that that's going away. >> reporter: do you blame them, though? >> no. don't blame them at all. he's in business. he's got to survive. >> reporter: what do you think of the fact they have to stop service? >> oh, i'm very sorry and i'm sure all my age group is sorry, but we understand.

tonight, but then it's going to turn milder. winds diminish tonight and lead us to a very cold one. gorgeous tomorrow, light wind, not as cold friday night and warming up over the weekend. a touch of may on saturday and a touch of june on sunday. so clear and cold tonight, winds diminish, bring in the plants, 32 to 42, winds out of the north at 5 to 10. that's going to allow the temps to fall. we have the wind mixing up the atmosphere, temps can't fall that much. they will tonight. 35 in gaithersburg for a low, 36 rockville, probably 40 downtown. you have plants that are cold weather sensitive in pots, ought to bring them in. 37 college park, 36 bowie, mid- 30s in reston, fairfax and sterling. out towards leesburg 34 and also manassas and middleburg. tomorrow morning sunny, gorgeous, a chilly start. you'll need a jacket. so will the kids, temps in the 30s and 40s, winds northerly at 10. at least we're not talking about wind chill anymore.

by afternoon sunny and spectacular, winds light, high temperatures around 65 and winds turn westerly but only at 10. that's really a pretty good deal. we're looking at sunshine from the mountains to the coast tomorrow. 52 in oakland, 58 cumberland. hagerstown and winchester, martinsburg should make 60, mid- 60s in warrenton, leesburg and manassas, probably 66 in fairfax, mid-60s downtown and up to the north, looking at 63 for annapolis, not much wind. so no small craft advisory for the bay or tidal potomac for a change. we've had one pretty much every day this week. break it down, clear skies to start, nice by noon, 58 to 63 and just gorgeous by evening, 61 to about 66. next three days, temps are going up nicely, low 70s on saturday, just kind of tucking a drop in there, slight chance of a shower, don't change your plans and sunday, touch of june, 81 degrees.
