into pieces. hours later north korea admitted the satellite failed to enter orbit. condemnation has been swift. the u.s. says it is suspending plans to give food to north korea and the u.n. security council has scheduled a meeting for later today. the rocket was to have blasted off to the south, a tnd flashed harmlessly into the sea. officials say it broke apart 90 seconds after the lift-off. white house issued a statement. the u.s. remains vigilant in north korean provocation and is fully committed to our allies in the region. japan was monitoring the

satellite. yong yong says it contained only an earth monitoring satellite but secretary hillary clinton says the potential payload is worrisome. >> there is no doubt that this satellite would be launched using ballistic missile technology. >> the race is on to locate the fallen debris to find out what weren't wrong and to determine where north korea got the technology to build the rocket. meantime north korea is reportedly making preparations to conduct a nuclear test. in syria, the u.n. brokered cease-fire which lasted almost a day may be over. there are reports of heavy gunfire this morning between government forces and rebels near the border of turkey. also today, opposition leaders are calling for widespread protests but the turnout could be low because the government has not removed tanks and troops. a small town in new hampshire is reeling after a shooting that killed at least one police officer.

it happened in greenland, a suspect open fire last night when police approached his house during a drug bust. the town's police chief was killed and four other officers wounded. the gunman and woman are still inside the home in a standoff with police. residents say the officer killed chief michael maloney, who had been on the job 12 years and was about to step down. >> he was a -- he's a wonderful chief. he's eight days away from retirement. it's just not fair because he's a working chief. he didn't shirk back and didn't let anybody do the work he wouldn't do himself. >> greenland, new hampshire, has only six other police officers. another siege under way in modesto, california, after a sheriff deputy and a civilian were killed. police were serving an eviction notice yesterday when gunfire broke out. then a few hours later the apartment building where the suspect is hiding burst into

flames. in florida, george zimmerman remains in jail after his first day in court. he's charged with murdering 17-year-old trayvon martin. manuel gallegus is in sanford with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. prosecutors say george zimmerman profiled trayvon martin and assumed he was a criminal the night he was killed. legal experts say there is still a real chance that this case will eventually be thrown out because of florida law. george zimmerman may soon ask a judge to let him out of jail. piz lawyer says a bail hearing will probably be held a week from today. >> mr. zimmerman -- >> reporter: zimmerman made his first court appearance on thursday and is charged with the second-degree shooting of trayvon martin. he's held in a 67-foot square. he can't watch television but has access to the jail commissary. this receipt shows he spent $80

on soap, playing cards and snacks. zimmerman's attorney says his client is scared. >> now to know that he's facing charges that could put him in prison for life, how could not be be froitened. >> reporter: he's being held in an isolated cell here. officials say he's kept away from the general population because of the high-profile nature of the case. his lawyer says he'll plead not guilty. the neighborhood watch volunteer says he fired in self-defense after the teenager attacked him. prosecutors say zimmerman followed and confronted the unarmed teen after a police dispatcher told him not to. the state points to screams heard in a 911 call. martin's mother, sybrina fulton, says it's her son's voice. >> we are setting out for justice tin for trayvon. >> reporter: if convicted he faces 25 years to life in prison.

an attorney for the martin family says they want to real peel or amend florida's stand your grand laws as part of trayvon martin's legacy. >> manuel gallegus in sanford, florida. now to politics and the fight for women. four years ago, 53% of the votes were cast by women and 67% of them went for mr. obama. that's why a full-blown campaign war has erupted over comments made by a democratic strategist about mitt romney's wife. nancy cordes has that story. >> reporter: it started when democratic commentator hillen rosen said mitt romney's wife, ann, had no experience in the working world. >> guess what, his wife has never worked a day in his life. she's never dealt with the kinds of economic issues that a majority of the women in this country are facing. >> reporter: rosen is not connected to the obama campaign

but republicans called out the campaign anyway. they say it insults hard-working moms. democrats quickly distanced themselves from rosen. obama's campaign manager said she should apologize. michelle obama weighed in, tweeting, every mother works hard and every woman deserves to be respected. ann romney herself had this to say -- >> my career choice was to be a mother. i think all of us need to know we need to respect choices that women make. >> reporter: republicans have been looking for a way to win back women after damaging fights this winter over insurance coverage for contraception and funding for planned parenthood. a recent "usa today"/gallup poll shows president obama led romney by 18 points among women. so romney has been talking more time calling his wife his

sounding board. >> she report to me regularly. >> reporter: this week he repeatedly argued that the president has failed working women. >> this is an amazing statistic. the percentage of jobs lost by women in the president's three years, 3 1/2 years, 92.3% of all jobs lost during the obama years have been lost by women. 92.3%. >> reporter: the white house points out one of the president's first acts was to sign a law promoting equal pay for women, a law they note many republicans in congress opposed. nancy cordes, cbs news, washington. and president obama also denounced the comments by hillen rosen. >> when i think about what michelle's had to do, when i think about miami own mom, a sister, that's work. >> mr. obama also says the families of candidates should

bed. she was -- and the mayor immediately initially held back by detectives responded, look, she may die, she may die. went in and grabbed the woman out of the bed and carried her through the fire with the assistance of detectives downstairs. >> booker suffered burns on one hand but didn't mention it in a tweet he sent before going to the hospital. thanks to all who are concerned, he wrote. just sufficienting from smoke inhalation. he later tweeted he thanked one of the detectives. on the "cbs moneywatch," another penalty for goldman sachs and the material girl unveils her first per few. drew levinson is here with that and more. >> good morning to you. china's economic growth fell to its lowest level in three years but that news did not seem to send chills through the overseas markets. nikkei jumped more than 1%.

hang seng climbed nearly 2%. after wall street snapped a five day losing streak on wednesday, stocks surged on thursday. the dow gained 181 points to get within 13,000 once again. the nasdaq added 39. and google gave investors more good news after the closing bell. the internet company released a better than expected earnings report. google also announced it will submit stock making shares affordable to more investors. goldman sachs has agreed to pay $22 million to settle charges it improperly shared confidential research. regulators say between 2006 and 2011 they passed along the information to a select list of vip clients. last year the investment firm paid $10 million to settle similar charges in massachusetts. postal workers are rallying against potential cuts to the mail service. workers say if congress does not step in by may 15th the postal service will close 3600 offices,

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. new york, sunny, 67. miami, mostly sunny, 83. chicago, afternoon thunderstorms, 60. dallas, cloudy, 67. l.a., thunderstorms and 59. now for a check of today's national forecast. showers and thunderstorms will dot the plains in western great lakes. severe storms are likely in kansas, oklahoma and north texas. rain and thunderstorms will continue along the west coast spreading inland to the northern rockies. the sierra mountains will get more heavy snow. the northeast, mid-atlantic and

much of the southeast will be sunny. in sports, the norl saints named assistant coach joe vitt to run the coach during sean payton's season-long suspension. vitt got a six-game suspension himself in the same case. it's unclear who will be in charge for those games. now to first round action in the stanley cup playoffs. washington and boston and the bruins' chris kelly scored on a long slap shot in overtime for a 1-0 victory. bruins hope to be the first to repeat as stanley cup champs since the red wings in 1998. in st. louis, the win went to the investigates. san jose's martin havilac. in the nba now, miami at chicago with time running out,

the bulls' watson nailed the three-pointer to tie it at 84-84 but dwyane wade missed a buzzer-beater. bulls ran away with it outscoring the heat 12-2. now to baseball. angels at twins. l.a. had a 6-0 lead in the fifth inning but joe mauer got minnesota back into it with the three-run homer to right. in the eighth, justin morneau's shot for a 10-9 comeback win. talk about a water hazard. a toothy spectator moved in for a close look at the heritage tournament in hilton head, south carolina. turns out, a bunker rake works as a motivator and one caddy appears to be an experience the gator wrangler. the critter retreated but not far. when we come back, the art of the heist.
