good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm michelle miller. the investigation into allegations of misconduct by the secret service prior to the president's visit to coluombia s expanding. 11 members of the secret service have had their security service invoked and more members of the military may have been involved than they not. a top soldier says he's embarrassed. susan mcginnis is in washington with the very latest. good morning, susan. >> good morning, michelle. this is being called the biggest scandal in the history of the secret service. now nearly a dozen of the military leaders may be involved as well. military leaders are embarrassed about the misconduct in colombia, according to cheefr of staff martin dempsey. >> we let the boss down. >> reporter: the chairman says they're trying to figure out exactly what unfolded before president obama arrived for last

week's summit of america. >> what we do know is we distracted -- several members distracted an issue that was a very important regional engagement for our president. >> reporter: a law enforcement source says a member got involved with a payment argument. those including two supervisors are being investigated. pentagon officials say at least ten members of the military sent to support that team may also be involved. the military and secret service have ordered full investigations and some lawmakers say they may call for congressional hearings. >> the secret service says it stripped top security clearances from the agents involved and put them on administrative leave pending the results of the investigation. defense secretary leon panetta said members of the military found to be involved will be disciplined. >> will be weather our forces

are in colombia or any other country, we expect them to bide by the highest standard of behavior. that's a requirement. >> reporter: president obama says he will withhold judgment until the investigation is complete. and lawmakers will also be looking at training and screening methods of the secret service to make sure no agents there could possibly endanger the agency's vip. now into the investigation of another government scandal, the las vegas spending spree by employees at the general services administration. the chief investigator says he's already recommending criminal charges to the justice department and the person who hosted it says he's not talking. nancy hordes explained. >> reporter: the man who planned the conference is not talking.

he's on paid administrative leave from the gsa. >> did you approve the funding? >> i decline to answer based on my fifth amendment constitutional privilege. >> reporter: he was less forthcoming from 2010. >> think i pretty much promised to deliver an ore-the-top unforgettable team-building experience. how did we do on that one? >> reporter: the ore-the-top experience involved a clown, mime reader and lavish afterparty. >> spent $75,000 on a bike-building exercise. >> reporter: the general detailed how neely and his subordinates made between six and ten scouting trips to las vegas before the conference at a cost of more than $130,000. >> how is it that this type of money could be lying around that it could be used in this flush fund manner.

because you're not just a family. you're a dog family. spectacular eruption on the sun. this video was captured monday by a nasa spacecraft. the super heated plasma just explodes off the surface, and it's not even the strongest sun storm of the year. nasa officials say the solar flare poses no danger to the ertd. final good-byes to the space shuttle "discovery." the shuttle is mounted on the back of a modified jumbo jet which will leave the kennedy space center today and fly to washington, d.c. then it will be taken to the smithsonian museum. "discovery" was first launched in 1984 and flew 39 times in space, more than any other shuttle. on the "cbs moneywatch," how low will apple stock go, and hostess workers fight for their just dessert.

randall pinkston is here in new york with more on that. >> good morning, michelle. tokyo's nikkei ended lower by a frac texas. hong kong's hang seng ended in lace l is than half a surprise. government released a better than expected sales report. the dow rose why the nasdaq fell 22. a big reason why the nasdaq has been slumping is the falling price of apple stock. apple represents 12% of the nasdaq and shares of the tech company fell $25 on monday. that's the fifth day in a row they have declined. apple stocks started to slide after technology analysts predicted while its companies may cut back on subsidies to customers buying the iphone. but despite the recent losses, apple shares are still up 43% for the year. the company that makes snacks like twinkies, ding

this weekend saved lives. six people were killed but dozens of twisters touched down across the midwest. dean reynolds takes a look at what some people did when they heard storms were headed their way. >> i wasn't in here very long when the tornado hit. >> reporter: when she heard her radio announce the storm system was approaching woodward, oklahoma, 88-year-old wilma nelson didn't hesitate. >> i thought. whoo, i'd better get out of here and get to my frady hole because i had it all prepared. >> reporter: her granddaughter said a day worth of warnings from the national weather service saved lives. >> we took it very seriously because of the buildup they were talking about all week because of the storms we had here. >> reporter: over much of kansas where the twisters touched down, they replaced the old admonition to take cover with you could be killed. mass devastation is highly likely, making area

they did so briefly and often over sparsely populated areas. dean reynolds, cbs news, nor man, oklahoma. jury select continues today in the retrial of former pitching granlt roger clemens. the seven-time cy young winner was in washington yesterday. he's charged with lying congress in 2008 about using performance-enhancing drugs. prosecutors' first attempt to convict clemens was declared in a mistrial. petty is offering a p$,500 reward for five guitars stolen from a studio last weekend. they include his prized 196712-string ricken boxer 360 and his 1965 gibson. the reward would be paid with no questions asked. the thefts come as petty kicks off a tour tomorrow. coming up after your local news on "cbs morning news," new insight into the private life of

of the beltway leaving college park heading for kenilworth avenue. you're going to need to stay to the left to get around that. we'll go a little further south and very light to the wilson bridge. coming up in my next report, we'll take a peek at 270 at 4:39. the space shuttle discovery makes its final mission. it will fly on the back after jumbo jet from the kennedy space center to the smithsonian's institution's hangar at dulles airport. 10:00 this morning discovery is expected to fly over the national mall. then thursday crews are going to tow the shuttle to the national air and space museum's center. it's just one of several nasa shuttles which will be in museums now that the subtle program is over. coming -- shuttle program is over. we'll bring you live reports from gravely point. nearly 3,000 service

members were raped or sexually assaulted last year. now congress is thinking about taking the military out of the loop when it comes to investigating and punishing sex crimes. >> gary nurenberg has more on the bill which would take the issues of sexual assault and its aftermath out of the military chain of command. >> reporter: a marine officer, a rack she survived but at the marine barracks in d.c.? >> in my case it was a gang rape so it was my word against two of the perpetrators. so it was two against one. >> reporter: the secretary of defense got an earful monday night on capitol hill about how the military deals with the issue of sexual assault. >> our men and women in uniform should not fear their fellow service members. >> reporter: but lieutenant klay says her superior officer? >> threatened me with dust and performed sexual acts on me that were as he said to humiliate me. he felt that he could get away with this because he was in a protected system. >> reporter:
