. nasa's most spectacular shuttle made an intiepting entrance. good afternoon. i'm jc hayward. the nation's oldest shuttle took to the skies one final time. it hitched a ride from
12:01 pm
florida's kennedy space center to the national air and space museum. we have team coverage and we're going to begin with kristin fisher who joins us live from the udvar-hazy center with more information. >> reporter: what a spectacular site and a treat. the flight was only supposed to last for a 40 minutes. we got a full hour and a half. it flew over the udvar-hazy center three times. hundreds of people were out here watching cheering it on, cheering on discovery's final flight. discovery has flown more missions than any other shuttle and it's also carried more astronauts. about 260 astronauts. both my parents actually flew on discovery back in the early '80s. my mother kind enough to come out today. she was here with me as we watched the flyover here at the udvar-hazy center. mom, what did you think? >> i wouldn't have missed it
12:02 pm
for anything. it was extremely moving. i know i had tears in my eyes but a proud moment to feel privileged to have had the chance to be inside that magnificent vehicle. >> to be standing on the ground and watching the shuttle in the air and knowing that in 1984, you were inside that shuttle being launched into outer space. what goes through your mind? >> sometimes it just seems surreal, you know. it's almost like you see it and you go, did that really happen? >> reporter: did i really do that? >> yes. it has that surreal aspect to it but it was absolutely magnificent and something the american people should be extremely proud of, the technology, the contributions that our taxpayers made to this program. it's just truly something i'm very proud to have been a part of. >> reporter: to be standing here with hundreds of people that have been waiting for hours, waited in traffic to see this happen and to hear them cheering not once but three times, all the applause, the
12:03 pm
cheers, does it make you proud to be an american and to be a part of nasa's human space life program? >> extremely. when i hear people say no one is supportive of the space program, well you see today that i don't think that's the case. it's not something i've ever seen. it really -- i'm really proud to be part of that and see that. it felt really good. >> reporter: mom, i know it's a bittersweet day for you. thank you for coming out. the wheels touched down around 11:00 at dulles. from dulles the next two days it's going to be towed over to the udvar-hazy center where there will be a big welcome discovery ceremony on thursday. back to you, jc. >> thank you very much, kristin. let's go to bruce leshan. he's going to join us live from the national mall where scores stopped to watch the shuttle make its grand entrance. >> reporter: yeah. i'll tell you what. goruous is absolutely right, jc. this was way better than the 4th of july.
12:04 pm
this remarkable salute to american ingenuity. tens of thousands of people here, maybe hundreds out at dulles or near dulles. tens of thousands of people out here along the national mall trying to catch a glimpse of this precarious odd contraption, that giant shuttle atop an even larger 747. hard to believe the thing can even fly but fly it did. it scooted straight down the potomac river. people said whoa, is that it? is that all we're going to see? then it came up and along and over by nasa headquarters. then it came swinging back around, went over the white house, downtown d.c. and then two remarkable passes roaring right up the national mall to the amazement of all the people down here watching. but for a lot of folks, this was kind of a bittersweet moment because it marks the end of this era and the end of the chance of americans to be out
12:05 pm
in space at this point. so we talked to a mom and a kid about that. >> i think that it is a very important part of science. it will be more difficult for the masses to be able to enjoy that and to have that experience. i think it was very important part of our american culture. >> reporter: what did you think? >> i really liked it because it's like two stuff stuck together that's flying around. >> reporter: so that what may be missing for a bit is the chance to fire up young people about space exploration, about science, about math, about doing great things and great american experiences. that is one thing that shuttle proponents said was one of the most valuable things about the shuttle program. in addition, this shuttle did so many amazing things.
12:06 pm
the hubble space telescope, trips to the space station, all of that. people here, many of them didn't get a chance to see the space shuttle taking off from down in florida, but they did have a chance to see it roaring past the monuments to america's greatness. they got pictures and they'll have the chance now to go out to the museum and see it there and think back to all that hard work and all the sacrifices and all the remarkable things that have come from the shuttle program. jc? >> thank you so much. bruce leshan reporting live. well, discovery will take the place of the enterprise at the smithsonian. that was a test shuttle actually. it never went into space. the enterprise will go to the intrepid museum in new york city. the shuttle atlantis will go on display at the kennedy space summer in florida. while the endeavour will eventually go on display at the california science center near

you know how hard it can be to breathe and what that feels like. copd includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. spiriva helps control my copd symptoms by keeping my airways open a full 24 hours. plus, it reduces copd flare-ups. spiriva is the only once-daily inhaled copd maintenance treatment that does both. and it's steroid-free. spiriva does not replace fast-acting inhalers for sudden symptoms. tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, glaucoma, trouble urinating, or an enlarged prostate. these may worsen with spiriva. discuss all medicines you take, even eye drops. stop taking spiriva and seek immediate medical help if your breathing suddenly worsens, your throat or tongue swells, you get hives, vision changes or eye pain, or problems passing urine. other side effects include dry mouth and constipation. nothing can reverse copd. spiriva helps me breathe better. does breathing with copd weigh you down? ask your doctor if spiriva can help.
