shot and killed. >> reporter matt jablow standing by right now. and, matt, question now, is the baby safe. >> reporter: yes, the baby has been found alive and well just a few hours after his mother was shot and killed right in front of him. it happened in spring, texas just outside houston. that's where 28-year-old kala golden was shot and killed and her three day old baby kidnapped outside of a pediatrician's office. a woman got out of a car and shot golden and a man who was in the car with the shooter grabbed the baby and they all took off. >> the lady that was shot it's like she didn't even really get shot because she did pull the car seat away from the man that was trying to get the car seat. i did see that. she was pushed down on the ground and that's when she did not get the car seat and he put the child in a car seat in the car and drove off. >> reporter: unbelievable. we're told the baby is safe and sound, alive and well. we're also told one person is

now under arrest. we'll, of course, be following the story and be sure to pass along any developments as we hear about them. derek and anita. >> thank you, matt. space shuttle discovery is at dulles international airport tonight after making its final flight. many of you saw this incredible video as the shuttle flew over the dc area over a modified jet. it will make its way to the smithsonian where it will replace the enterprise. we want to know what is next and we sent reporter gary nurenberg to find out. gary. >> reporter: well, anita, no more shuttle program. the united states space program is now at a fork in the road with long-term decisions about which way to go simply not yet made. with a goodbye to the shuttle program. >> we have no land-space program. that's it. i don't like to see us in that position. >> reporter: a position that led to this startling position to a child tuesday from a shuttle veteran. >> any advice for ethan, an

gallon of gas sound? that is $5.79 for a regular of regular unleaded. in the washington metro area, drivers are paying an average of $4.05. that is down a couple cents from this time last week. people living inside the district pay an average of $4.17 a gallon. >> president obama was talking about the sky high cost of fuel. he's proposing new measures that would limit speculation in the oil markets. the president's plan calls for harsher penalties for any market manipulation. >> i call on congress to pass a package of measures to crack down on illegal activity and hold accountable those that manipulate the market for private gain at the expense of working families. >> gas prices would come down if we drilled more for oil, president obama says more oil has been produced under his administration in the u.s. than at any time in the last 8 years. we are learning some scorching new details about that

secret service scandal. according to the senator on the homeland security committee, the 11 agents in question partied with at least 20 women at the columbian hotel last week. he does not plan on firing the head of the secret service. >> the president has confidence in the director of the secret service. director sullivan acted quickly in response to this incident. >> now, according to the pentagon, at least 10 members from from various branches of the military may have also been involved in the misconduct which happened just before president obama arrived for the submit of the americas last weekend. on the 2012 campaign trail tonight, gop nominee mitt romney is gaining more support. john baynor now throwing his weight. he has the economic policies that will get americans back to work. mitch mcconnell endorsing romney as well saying the republican

party is behind him all the way. and months after pledging his support to newt gingrich, herman cain is now also getting on the romney band wagon. if president obama gets reelected, i'll be dead or in jail by this time next year. now, that was the promise from rock star ted nugent. he made the remarks at a convention in st. louis over the weekend. he also called the obama administration vile, evil and america hating, and that has the secret service investigating the remarks. he stabbed a 92-year-old woman to death and then came back, stole her money and credit cards and now a teenager in prince george's county will be behind bars for the next 60 years. william fits pled guilty to killing and robbing the district heights back in 2011. he has shown no remorse for his crime and he'll be officially sentenced in september. tonight new information in an ongoing 9news now investigation about that store

in northwest dc that our andrea mccarren caught allegedly selling alcohol to minors. richard kim, the owner of town square market has turned down a plea deal. he says he's innocent and he wants a trial. that's now set for may 21st. in the meantime, the advisory neighborhood commission is asking the alcohol control board to deny kim's license renewal. well, for the next four weeks, the dc government is once again promising to fill any street pothole within 48 hours of a complaint. >> mayor vincent gray kicked off the campaign. bruce johnson was there to ask about potholes and a few other sticky issues. >> reporter: some of the past three campaigns the city has filled 19,000 potholes, but we didn't get a lot of snow this year so you might be asking what is the big deal. the repairing army gathered at wisconsin avenue and lowell street today to kick off the april to may pothole palooza. find a pothole or drive into

mercury. winds have calmed down north, northwest at about 9. they're going to be pretty much light all night and tomorrow. here is a look at the radar. we found showers developing. these are going to move northward along i81 corridor. i still think most of it is in the immediate metro area will have a dry commute going to work. it could be a different story coming home from work. why in the world a snow potential in here. i can guarantee you it's not going to snow tomorrow. but we are going to see some rain showers as we get into the evening hours. so most of us will have a wet commute going home, but nothing is going to be heavy. overnight mostly cloudy, cooler. 46-54 and winds reasonable. northerly at 10. now, here is the deal. we're looking at a few showers tomorrow. nothing really heavy. and although that is kind of bad news, we are kind of pinning our hopes on a much stronger system over the weekend. showers on wednesday night. and then we're going to have a great finish to the week. a milder finish to the week.

in fact, a down right womaner finish to the week as we -- warmer finish to the week as we get into friday. mostly cloudy, a bit chilly in the morning. shower possible west. 40s and 50s. by afternoon, it stays mostly cloudy. almost chilly. some showers possible. especially west of town. high temperatures around 60s and with light wind. we get a break on the wind but it's going to feel kind of like march. let's break it down for you. 48-56 to start. by noon cool. temps in the 50s. some showers possible. by evening 56-61. drop temps a little bit. so a light jacket is a good idea. upper 60s on thursday. returning partly cloudy. gorgeous on friday. temperatures go back in the mid 70s. next seven days, the weekend, saturday is going to be okay. showers and storms develop late. we're still warm, though. mid 70s. and we are still very optimistic about the system on sunday with widespread rain showers and storms from here all the way to the eastern shore. cooler. temps in the 60s.

well, two strong earthquakes hit san diego today, but it was only a very small part of san diego. in fact, the earthquakes were confined to a single building. they're what's called a manmade test to help buildings survive. engineers built this five story structure using some earthquake resistant technology, and they put the whole thing on what is called a shake table. and they even outfitted it to resemble a hospital. then they flipped the switch. they start the building rocking and rolling. as you can see, stuff is moving around in there. the building that weighs 700 tons swayed six inches under the quake. >> if we can make it cross effective, we might be able to apply this technology to more newer buildings and retrofit some of the older buildings. >> an 8.8 quake. still no real damage, which is
