billion phase two of the rail line, which is to run from reston to dulles and beyond. concerns over a government shutdown got to colgon. >> i had a call this morning. very concerned about the budget because they have teachers to pay and pensions to pay. >> peggy fox, 9news now. >> the price tag for extending metro all the way out to dulles airport was also on the agenda at today's metropolitan washington airport authority meeting. the board members say they are concerned about the impact the budget battle in richmond could have on the bottom line. saying that delays could lead to higher costs for material and labor. the head of the project says phase one could go as much as $150 million over budget. but right now it's only running $100 million too high. the board blames most of that overrun on safety adjustments and says it may need to be made up by raising rates on the toll road. no signs of progress tonight in the battle to get a budget bill on the table in

maryland. today, several state employees helped to unveil what they are calling a doomsday clock in annapolis. it is counting down to july 1, when half a billion dollars in cuts will take effect. if no other budget deal can be reached. republicans say it's not quite accurate to call those automatic cuts a doomsday budget, since the state needs to get house in order. >> the man who revolutionized how we learn about new music is being remembered tonight. dick clark died today after suffering a massive heart attack this morning. sawn sandra endo has a look back at his career. >> dick clark began his career on the weekly dance party that would later be known as american bandstand in philadelphia in 1956. the show became a national and later an international sensation after it was picked up by abc one year later.

in spite of racial attitudes at the time, clark was a pioneer and promoting african american artists. the silhouettes, the supremes, and gladus knight. an appearance on american bandstand launched many musical careers and from jerry lee lewis to janet jackson, they all wanted dick clark to give their record a spin. >> if you looked at the history of american bandstand, it covered everything, from popular music to 1952, and eddie fisher and so forth through the exprok roll period, country music, rhythm and blues, rap music. heavy metal. it is everything. >> music wasn't his only beat. clark proved to be a prolific businessman and television icon. hosting the game show, the $25,000 pyramid. tv's bloomers and practical jokes and of course the annual new year's rocking eve

pictures of american troops posing with dead afghans. the white house called the behavior reprehensible. but defense secretary is worried the l.a. times publication of those photos could cost more american lives. bruce leshan is live in the satellite center and bruce, pinetta asked the times not to publish those photos. >> they published two of them. the times said it has an obligation to report vigorously and impartially on every aspect of the war in afghanistan. in one photo, a soldier, his name tag clearly visible, turns with a smile away from a bearded suicide bomber. the dead man's hand resting on the soldier's shoulder. in another, troops from the 82nd airborne combat team pose with the severed legs of insurgents who had accidentally blown themselves up. >> this is not who we are.

church mayor, robyn gardner is charged with three counts of child sexual abuse. an auralling tennessee county judge denied a prosecution motion to prevent admission of dna evidence. the alleged victims, nine and ten years old, say they were sexually abused during two sleepovers at the gardner's falls church home. the trial is set to begin on monday. for the fir time since george huguely was convicted of murdering his exgirlfriend, yeardley love's mother spoke out about her daughter's death. >> as hard as it is to realize that nothing will bring yeardley back to us, that same realization is our driving force to keep mer memory alive. >> sharon love's comments came at an event to urge congress to reauthorize the violence against women act. the foundation works with experts to address the problem of domestic violence. still ahead tonight, a wrong turn lands a driver inside a building that is not a

it is a busy night in our newsroom. we have more breaking news for you. bruce johnson joins us on the phone with details of a break in at the d.c. inspector general. bruce, what is going on? >> we just got this information a short time ago. late monday afternoon, between 5:30 and 5:45, emancipation day, a local holiday for the d.c. government and d.c. residents. somebody broke into the offices of the d.c. auditor. the d.c. auditor conducts inspections and anything and everything that the auditor deems fit to be looked at. somebody broke into the offices, which are in suite 900. that's 717, 14th street northwest. also point out this is the same building that houses the

offices of the d.c. inspector general who has been investigating alleged corruption. now, according to my high ranking sources, this person was to the 9th floor. went into the offices of the auditor and took at least one, possibly two computers. i'm told there may be video tape of this. metropolitan police have a report on file that may have video tape of a suspect. at this point, my source identify the suspect as somebody wearing a mask. d.c. police are investigating. lesli. >> bruce, is it a leap to say that this is probably connected to one of those investigations that is going on or should we hold back on that right now? >> obviously, we hold back, but you can't ignore the fact that there is very, very sensitive information on the computers, on these hard drives in the office and the inspector general's office. any kind of burglary at these establishments is going to draw

the attention not only of police, but the u.s. attorney, high ranking city officials and everybody else. not to mention, you know, including the media. >> wow. well we know that you're going to keep us up to date and if you have anything else, let us know. bruce johnson reporting of a break in. anita. >> we have breaking news coming out of northeast d.c. where there are allegations of sexual abuse against a daycare worker caring for a three-year- old child. ken is live from zion baptist church with more on this story. ken. >> some serious allegations. d.c. police not giving too much information about it, but they are confirming they are allegations. now, according to d.c. police, the u.s. attorney's office is also investigating these claims. they say a staff member from the church approached them a couple days ago to report the alleged sexual assault. it's been since that time they

have been investigating this. who this child is, they are not saying or what the extent of the allegation is. they are also not saying. here's d.c. police commander, george kuzic, take a listen. >> our focus is on the incident that occurred with the child. you know, everything will be looked at, but our foe focus is dealing with the assault on the child. >> church remains closed. i tried to get comment from somebody, but nobody answered the door. here's what the police are saying. the police youth division is investigating this and right now they do not have any information to provide to us, suggesting there are other children involved. right now, the allegation is exclusive to one child, of course this is an investigation that is still on going. a will the of details are expected to come out of this one. ken molestina, 9news now. >> thank you. sky 9 flew over a landmark prince georges county restaurant today where an out of control car slammed into the building just before the

lunchtime rush. and tonight, it's raising new questions about safety concerns associated with elderly drivers. >> i'm scott broom where driver competency is being investigated after a 91-year- old man lost control of his car and slammed into jerry's seafood restaurant before lunchtime. >> he came and rode right through our dining room. >> caught on tape inside the restaurant, the impact looks something like an explosion. >> almost felt like it was an earthquake. >> look carefully and you can see a waitress leaping out of her seat. police are looking for a cause. >> he was taken to a local hospital to be examined. we don't know if there was a medical condition or not. >> driver competency became a big issue. legislators approved extending the license renewal period from 5 to 8 years to save money. for a driver aged 82, that means no renewal test until age 90. the accident here remains under
