momentarily. >> i blot a new -- brought a new box of tissues in yesterday. my voice is starting to come back too after the last couple of weeks. we're on the right track. all of us are on the right track for the next couple of days. your forecast on this thursday, we start with clouds. it's a little damp out there so you're feeling every bit of that 51 degrees. jacket for sure. but by lunch time i expect the sunshine mid- to late morning so we'll be looking at 63 at noon. a gorgeous lunch hour with light winds. it's going to feel even warmer than that as the highs get toward 70, if not the low 70s. we've seen the showers yesterday afternoon and last night. most of them have pulled off toward the beaches right now. however, down towards southern maryland, across parts of southern calvert, st. mary's, a few very light sprinkles. fog is a little bit of a problem in leesburg. manassas much better. warrenton down to three- quarters. other than that low clouds in spots and the coolness this morning with the high humidity. mid-40s north and west of town.

manassas 48. la plata 49. annapolis, that is our warm spot right now at 54. we sit at 51. a beautiful afternoon. look at these highs. upper 60s. a couple of spots into the low 70s. it is thursday this morning at 6:00 a.m. monika santami, you're getting busier and busier. not good news. not to say it hasn't been like this for a while, especially for commuters on the north side of town. i don't remember it being this bad so early on on the outer loop of the beltway, but it is this morning. in fact, it was just a minor accident. it just took a while for the tow truck to get there on the outer loop before georgia avenue. this is what it left for you trying to get through that area in silver spring. let's take a live look near this on the outer loop at university boulevard. you can see traffic still very, very heavy and slow. it's going to be basically now leaving 95 interchange heading toward the accident before georgia avenue which has now been cleared actually to the right shoulder. a tow truck did arrive on the scene. we'll take you back over to the maps and this time heading west. first of all the accident

cleanup continues in bristow. this is northbound route 28 near route 234. slow traffic in centreville. slow traffic on 95 leaving dale city to the occoquan. then pretty solid from newington to springfield and we'll go outside live right now on the inbound side of i-66. it's also fog that's going to be a factor as you head through fairfax to the beltway. coming up in my next report, another look around the area at 6:12. >> thank you, monika. this is a big day for nasa and the smithsonian museum. the shuttle discovery will officially be handed over to the smithsonian's udvar-hazy center. >> the ceremony is set to get underway at 11:00 this morning. delia goncalves is live at the museum where some things are already getting under way. good morning, delia. >> reporter: good morning. it is pretty busy so far. crews are kind of getting ready and laying out their cable and the tow truck is on its way here. the discovery has been successfully demated from the 747 that brought it in into the

washington area on tuesday. now crews are getting ready to tow the enterprise out of its hangar. that happens in just about an hour. the massive crowds gathered here at the museum and around the whole region to watch the discovery piggyback flight into the area tuesday. it took two whole days to remove the shuttle from that plane and now discovery is at dulles airport waiting to be moved into its new home. >> on every kind of mission that the shuttle was designed to fly so it does embody the space shuttle era of human space flight. we see discovery as being not just a remembrance of the past era but also an inspiration for the future. it's the end of one era but it's the beginning of another era. >> reporter: take a look at that young boy in his spacesuit. certainly it was an exciting day on tuesday and it will prove to be another thrilling

day here when folks will be able to see enterprise and discovery nose to nose together at that ceremony that happens at 11:00. when discovery is eventually displayed in the museum, it will be displayed as if it just handed from -- just landed from space. even though everything is still intact inside, specifically the living quarters, the discovery's doors will remain shut for the public because they want to preserve the shuttle for decades and generations to come. but there will be a virtual tour available. coming up at 6:30, an exclusive interview with the captain and crew of that 747 that really gave us a thrill on tuesday. i'm sure you were excited to see it as well. >> we certainly were, delia. it will be good to hear from the pilots again, too. here's a quick recap of today's shuttle discovery transfer ceremony. the museum parking lot opens up at 8:00 and expect it to fill up quickly. the ceremony is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m.

then from noon until 4:00, both discovery and the shuttle enterprise will be on display. they'll be nose to nose at 4:30 discovery begins moving into its hangar while enterprise will be prepped for departure to new york city and its new home the intrepid museum. condolences and fond memories are pouring in for those of us who grew up watching dick clark. the 82-year-old entertainment mogul died yesterday of a massive heart attack. for more than four decades clark introduced some of music's biggest acts, hippest dance moves and the latest hairstyles to american teenagers and their families on american bandstand. that was one of the game shows he was actually hosting after that, too. the move was just the beginning of his empire. as you see there game shows, the blooper show dewith ed mcmahon, sweepstakes, he was part of ta. he obviously helped the ball drop in new york city on new year's eve for 40 years. his company dick clark productions created the golden globes, the daytime emmy awards and the academy of country music awards. the virginia state senate

has approved a new two-year $85 billion budget. this came one day after democrats rejected the plan because it doesn't fund the extension to loudoun county. but it passed yesterday and ironically it was a democrat who helped get the budget approved. funding for the second phase of metro's silver line extension to dulles airport remains up in the year. the price tag has loudoun county threatening to pull completely out of the project. county leaders are worried about having to cover their portion of the project while state leaders want the metropolitan washington authority airports authority to rethink its ruling that union workers must be used to build the line. a burglary at the d.c. auditor's office is under investigation now. we'll get to that in just a moment. jessica is here at 6:06. are we doing money or burglary? let's do money.

other parts. if sales of cars and trucks continue to grow, the industry could run short of parts later this year because there simply aren't enough factories to make them. the parts industry sha this rank during the recession and has not grown enough to help rising sales. starting sunday, items are being marked down at best buy across the country. these are the stores that have been slated to close. a couple are in our area in maryland the store at inner harbor, baltimore. in virginia the one at landmark mall in alexandria and cosner's corner in fredericksburg. don't expect huge sales on the best stuff at best buy starting sunday, but you're going to find deals like 20% off batteries, that kind of thing. so if you head to a store, you might want to stock up on some of the supplies. >> the not so sassy things. >> exactly. >> the needs. >> the big stuff, tvs, will be sent to other stores.

low 70s in a few spots with light winds. going out to the park tonight to see the first place nationals, 7:05, we've got temps in the mid-60s falling to the low 60s. skies should be generally clear out there with light southeasterly wins. i think you're in that sweat shirt, jacket or wind breaker should be enough. the rain from last night and yesterday pulling away quickly. in southern maryland, i don't know how well you were seeing this, a few light sprinkles from st. leonard toward lusby going over to the eastern shore and mechanicsville in st. mary's county. that's it. that's all that's left sprinkle wise. the fog from leesburg to warrenton, less than a mile there. the other visibilities are pretty good. down toward harrisonburg, half- mile being reported from them. your temperatures, the windchills anyway in the 40s and 50s but with winds light, these are pretty close to the actual air temps. look at that. there's the back edge of the clouds. we're seeing them break up now as we look at the capital this morning. 51 degrees. feeling like 51 with calm winds

and a rising barometer. we're in good shape today, tonight, tomorrow. by the weekend when we get a front to come our way, that will increase rain chances once again. becoming partly to mostly sunny, nice, about 70, if not low 70s. light southeast winds. 40s and 50s again tonight. 75 tomorrow. so a warmer day. showers and storms saturday. could be here before the noon hour. then sunday showers if not a cold rain or cool rain with highs around 60. lingers showers monday, 58. the cool pattern should be around tuesday and wednesday. monika santami has been extremely busy this morning. not good news for drivers. no, it's been very tough for drivers actually. you're not used to this early in the morning on the outer loop of the beltway just before georgia avenue, an early morning accident set the tone for a pretty tough, slow rush hour. it was not a major accident but it just took a while to clear it out of the road. in the meantime, you're going about 10 miles an hour leaving new hampshire avenue heading westbound on the beltway with the lanes now open. we'll take a live look there on the outer loop at new hampshire

avenue so you can just gauge what it looks like. again this is on the outer loop heading westbound on the beltway toward georgia avenue and again all lanes are open. if you're heading out the door right now hopefully that should get a tiny bit better for you for this morning's rush hour. 270 southbound, it's pretty much the same story. it's just been very, very slow and heavy leaving frederick down toward urbana. i'm just getting word of a disabled vehicle in the roadway there. authorities do know about it. once you're beyond that it's going to be slow again through rockville. a last live look on the beltway. american legion bridge. it's going to be the fog that's also a factor on the west side this morning. coming up at 6:25, another look this time in virginia. back to you, mike. >> thanks a lot, monika. a cross-country trip of sorts in this week's cool schools. we'll start in silver spring. this class is now competing for a national title. the video game that they've created could also help man kind in the future.

it's going to be pretty exciting. you can see now that it's daylight, you can see all the activity and you can see the monitors that have been set up for the crowds that are expected to fill this lawn. it says welcome discovery. now, a lot of the action is going to start in just a half an hour from now. that's when enterprise, the prototype, will be towed from its hiding place inside the hangar here. you can already see some cranes kind of reaching towards the door of the hangar. the enterprise will be pulled out and then at 10:30 discovery will be towed from dulles and as you said, they'll be nose to nose for today's ceremony. it took two days to remove discovery from the 747 shuttle carrier aircraft that ferried her into the washington region tuesday. we spoke exclusively to the four pilots and the two flight engineers from that flight. >> i think there was one point in the flight where i was looking down at the lincoln memorial, at the washington monument and we were soon to coup on the white house and i

thought oh, my gosh, i need to get my camera out but i couldn't because i was so busy flying but that was truly an awesome sight to see. >> i was trying to fly the path correct and be at the right altitudes and air speeds. i had a little bit of time to enjoy the scenery but not a lot. >> i had a chance to go downstairs and look and see the crowds at different locations on top of skyscrapers, the mall. it was pretty special. >> i'll be honest with you. as we taxied in, it choked me up. i didn't expect to feel that emotional about it as it taxied in but it really got to me, kind of hit home that this is it. >> reporter: they were a part of history as we all were as we saw that incredible flight into washington. let's take a look at some bullet points, a rundown of today's event. the museum parking lot will open at 8:00 this morning. the ceremony begins at 11:00. we're told between noon and 4:00 discovery and enterprise will be out on display in front of the tarmac here.

at least they're going in the right direction. >> believe it or not, they are coming down a little bit. a timey bit. in the washington area aaa says they're averaging $4.01 a gallon for regular this morning. that's down about 3 cents from a week ago and more relief could be on the way. "the wall street journal" reports the gasoline futures prices are sliding on world markets. that means prices at the pump could be headed even lower now. so far futures are down 6.3% from their high this year that was struck on march 26. yesterday alone they tumbled 1%. keep it going. "the wall street journal" tightened regulations or rather the white house, rather, tightened regulations on the oil and gas industry yesterday. the administration is requiring drillers to capture emission of certain air pollutants from new wells but the new requirements are being delayed. they won't fully kick in till 2015, a nod to industry concerns that the rules are being enacted too quickly for companies to comply. eight going to cost you more to get a-- it's going to

cost you more to get away on some airlines. united, american and others announced hikes for tickets bought seven days or fewer before you travel. not everybody is joining in. southwest, jet blue, u.s. airways and alaska all are saying they are not matching this hike, at least not yet. prices way up so far this year. >> i wonder if that's sort of a hint and it sort of causes a buying frenzy. it could almost be a marketing ploy, too. >> it's really true. we've had a lot of attempts at price hikes this year. i'm thinking back. i think we had around six attempts at price hikes and only about three of them have stuck so far. there is a little bit after frenzy and scare factor in the market every time this happens. time to look at the question of the day once again. the term "high five" is in the oxford english dictionary as
