12:04 pm
investigation would help the agency recovery, but says it must be fair. >> you have to let no stone be unturned to make sure you get to the truth of what happened down there before you can really take the actions that are necessary to take. >> reporter: the scandal erupted last week when a colombian prostitute accused a secret service agent of refusing to pay his full bill and called the police. u.s. investigators are in colombia interviewing possible witnesses. danielle nottingham, cbs news, the white house. >> the scandal also involved ten military personnel and as many as 20 women. by the way, prostitution is legal in colombia. rocker ted nugent will meet with secret service agents today following a tirade he made against president obama at an nra convention. nugent said if president obama gets reelected, quote, i will

afghans. employees at the general services administration are heeding the call to come forward and report any financial wrongdoing. the bad news there seems to be a lot of whistle blowing also. the inspector general of the gsa told congress yesterday that he set up a hot line for people to give tips. he wants to know what went on beyond that $820,000 conference that was held in las vegas that wasted taxpayers' money. >> while some have suggested that the investigation took too long to produce the final report, anyone familiar with law enforcement investigations understands that when you turn over one stone, you often find more stones that need to be turned over as well. and most people understand the need to be careful and certain before making public allegations, such as those contained in the report because careers and reputations are on
12:07 pm
the line, and my office does not take that lightly. >> the acting director of the gsa has stressed that no employee will be punished for whistle blowing. he entertained americans for decades. and now music fans are mourning the death of dirk clark. -- death of dick clark. >> ladies, here's chubby checkers. >> for more than four decades, dick clark introduced some of rock 'n' roll's biggest acts, hippest dance moves and latest hairstyles to american teenagers and their families. clark was also one of the first to give national exposure to black performers. and music was just the beginning of his empire. >> it wasn't just -- he wasn't just the star of it. he really was the -- he conceptualized it and he was the market. >> he pitched sweepstakes, urkerred in the new -- ushered

i'm one on one with my favorite county executive isiah leggett and we're going to talk about the ambulance fees. they're back on the table, even though some montgomery county residents thought that the issue was dead. so let's find out why they're back on the table, county executive. thank you for being with me. >> thank you for having me. certain circumstances have changed, jc. when we looked at it two years ago, we were not faced with the kinds of challenges we are faced with today coming out of annapolis. we have a shift over a ten-year period to local communities based on the teacher pension. we now see a change in the law that impacts montgomery county. these are unprecedented changes and there have a profound impact on montgomery county for a considerable period of time. the question i'm asking the people of montgomery county, are you prepared to affirm the
12:11 pm
decision that you made two years ago to raise the ambulance fees or do you want to raise taxes or do you make further cuts in the program, such as public safety in schools. that's a fair choice and a fair question to ask under the changed circumstances and conditions. subsequent to the time that we rejected the ambulance fee, anne arundel county and many others throughout the state have adopted, we're the only community in the entire region that do not have this. and so i say if we don't do this, we'll place a heavier burden on the taxpayers. this is money that people are already paying for because you pay for it already through your insurance premiums. all i want and all the county wants is the right to bill the insurance company for what you've already paid for at no cost to the average citizen. >> i think that's the part maybe the average citizen does not realize that it is not actually coming out of their pocket. how can you make that clear to citizens? >> well, it's one of these things that is easy to in fact inject the kind of fear that
12:12 pm
people in the ambulance are not going to pick you up. all of those things are not true true. >> what about the ride on information for passengers? let's discuss that. >> it's a wonderful idea. the technology, we see -- if you want to catch a bus, ride on, you can go to your telephone or computer and it will tell you when that bus will actually arrive. we initiated the system just a day or two ago and it works. so it's available for you real time on the ride on in montgomery county. >> that is great. that is wonderful news. i hope everyone is listening. >> you just arrive at the time that is stated and you'll catch the bus at the appropriate time. >> thank you, county executive isiah leggett. coming up next, howard has the forecast. stay with us. we have the clouds and fog this morning. it's turning out to be a really nice afternoon. look at the temp as we -- temps as we go to break.
12:13 pm
the pollen count? we don't have it. the rain washed it out. we're up to 64 now and 62 in annapolis. i'll have the seven-day forecast and talk about the weekend and i made some changes since this morning. you're watching 9news now at noon.
12:14 pm
12:15 pm
i've been combing through the day's daily deals and retailer websites to find you some deep discounts. here are some of my favorites.
12:16 pm
target's daily deal, $199.99 for a black faux leather recliner with two cup holders. you're getting the chair for $80 off plus you're getting free shipping. is your car green with pollen right now? living social has a deal with parkclean. $64 for an exterior and interior cleaning. that's 60% off and parkclean is a green company. they only use about a quarter gallon of water to get your ride to sparkle. mother's day right around the corner and pro flowers.com is giving you 20% off on orders of $39 or more. no coupon code needed to make mom smile. if you have an offer you've seen or if you're a local merchant with a deal for our viewers, i'd love to hear from ow facebook. i'm jess -- from you on facebook. i'm jessica doyle, 9news now. mcdonald's is trying to change its image in france. food is a passion there. mark philips reports that the fast food chain is making a sandwich designed to please the
12:17 pm
most discriminating diner. >> reporter: this is an important week in france. major choices that will influence how life is lived here in the future are being made. no, not here on the campaign trail where nicholas sarkozy will face his electorate this weekend to see if he continues as president the of france. here at the local burger joint where the french managers of mcdonald's have determined the good old american hamburger isn't good enough. instead they've launched the mcbaguette, mcdonald's's take on one of the basic french food groups, the baguette sandwich. two hamburger patties, some lettuce and grainy french mustard in a roll that looks like classic french bread. it may not be the beheading of louie the 16th but it's positively revolutionary. and the french have lined up in their ones and twos to try it.
12:18 pm
but as with wine tasting, does it have a good finish? >> dry, too dry. >> reporter: traditional baguette bakers fear mcdonald's is making another assault on a signature french product. could this be another nail in the french culinary coffin? alex dryer is an american chef who teaches bread and pastry making at a parisian cooking school. for him comparing the mcbaguette to the real thing is to borrow and mangle the phrase "the best of bread and the worst of bread." >> it's too soft. a regular baguette in france will be crispy the next 24 hours. >> reporter: but the french have a dirty little secret. they love mcdonald's. mcdo's they call it. the chain does more business in france than any country outside of the united states. more than five and a half
12:19 pm
billion dollars worth last year. and they've done it by frenchifying the product. the mcbaguettes may have traditionalists crying in their cafe you a late -- cafe au lait. ronald may be laughing all the way to the bank. >> do they have french fries there? >> i think they do. i don't know what they call them. let's get the weather forecast. >> we've got a good day going on. we had some fog this morning but right now we have a mix of clouds and sunshine, light winds, comfortable temperatures. we're going to have a very nice day and a nice friday. then things get a little iffy by saturday afternoon. here's a look at your day planner. we're expecting temperatures to be climbing in the mid- to upper 60s. some spots may make below 70s all depends on how much sunshine we get. if we get a accident amount of sunshine -- we may get a decent amount of sunshine but one thing we won't have is much in the way of winds today.
12:20 pm
you'll notice we still have a few clouds here and there. no rain. the thicker clouds, the fog is really gone out there well to the east off shore. and temperatures have responded. we're into the 60s here, mid- 60s down in fredericksburg. it's 55 in winchester. baltimore up to 63. locally 62 from college park and annapolis and columbia. 50 still in loudoun county. barely in the upper 50s from love vetsburg to sterling -- lovettsville to sterling. just these puffy fair weather clouds, a really pretty day out there for this thursday with 64 officially now at reagan national. mostly sunny skies. calm winds and the dew point of 45. so very, very comfortable. got plans outside this afternoon, want to go for a jog or walk, no problems whatsoever. just don't forget the sunscreen. nice this afternoon on our weather headlines. warmer tomorrow. tomorrow we'll be in the mid- 70s. might see a few upper 70s in spots.
12:21 pm
by saturday a warm day. we have a front coming through in the afternoon. so in the morning i think we're going to be dry in the metro. might see some late morning showers, mid-morning showers toward the shenandoah valley but temperatures should make it back in the 70s. cooler on sunday and this morning, even yesterday we were talking about maybe a soaking rain and we need the rain. right now it looks like this system is going to slide a little farther east. so while we may see some showers sunday south and east of d.c., i think our rain chances sunday are going down quickly. we're watching this system here in the northern plains. notice the showers and storms in iowa, in minnesota back through nebraska. there's a cold front back here. that front is what's going to come for saturday. until it gets here, our winds will turn around tomorrow and saturday to the southwest ahead of that front so that means we're going to warm up nicely. so a decent amount of sunshine today. tonight clear to partly cloudy. we dip into the 40s in the suburbs, 54 or so here in washington. tomorrow another sunny day for the most part. then by friday night, here come the showers into saturday morning. saturday morning the showers out to the west and by the
12:22 pm
middle of the day, here we are around 12:45. look, here come the showers. they're going to be with us saturday afternoon and evening. maybe some rumbles of thunder as well. so the forecast nice today, 70. tonight about 54 in town. 40s in the mountains. -- in the suburbs, excuse me and the mountains as well. 75 tomorrow and saturday. but saturday features some showers and storms for the afternoon and evening. then as we head toward sunday, cooler and 60. right now i think the better chance of showers on sunday probably stay south and east of washington. it's pet line thursday. this is kathy from the montgomery county humane society. who is this nice puppy? >> he's only seven months old. his name is tip, a neutered male. he is an american pit bull terrier. and he is of the breed that gets a bad rap but he is a pussy cat of a dog. he has passed every temperament test we have thrown at him. >> what is a temperament test? >> you feed him and take his
12:23 pm
food away and all he does is look dispointed. you give him a rawhide bone and take it away and all they do is look disappointed. this is not a dog for the faint of heart. he's a big, healthy dog. >> how much bigger will he get? >> he might fill out a little bit more but this is as tall as he's going to get i would say. he's well mannered, rides well in the car. he knows sit already. he's very food motivated so he's going to be easy to train. >> what are you looking for? what kind of family? >> a family with kids 10 and older. a yard would be nice. he's going to walk well on a leash if he has a little bit of training. we want somebody who is willing to do some obedience training with him because he is so exuberant. the montgomery county hugh pain society is having paws for the park on april 29 12:00 to 4:00 in gaithersburg. it's going to be pet friendly. bring your friendly dog, vendors, food, prizes, games for the animals, lots of fun. >> all the information to find out about their event and tip
