place on monday. back to you. >> you got that necklace on too, huh? >> yes, absolutely. i wear it every single time i cover the space story. >> it's awesome. thank you for sharing it with us. well, we need to get to some breaking news right now. out of new york, they would fear that the delta flight may have sustained a bird strike right after take off. the faa says that the boeing 757 declared an emergency for the engine problem and then the pilot turned the plane around and landed safely at jfk. the passengers on board said they heard a loud grinding noise. the plane began to shake and they did land safely once again. no injuries were reported. now to a story you first saw reported on 9news now. d.c. police are tracking a new lead tonight in a break-in at the district's auditors office. they are trying to figure out who stole two laptops at the office.

our bruce johnson broke the news of the burglary last night and bruce leshan follows that today. what do we know about it, bruce? >> reporter: well, just behind me, the auditors office and the question as richard's press secretary might say, is this just a third rate burglary or something more? well, d.c. police, they are releasing what may be their best lead yet. it is a surveillance video of what they call a person of interest. a chubby white male lurking around the hallway of the d.c. auditor's office on monday. emancipation day when d.c. offices were closed. police are trying to figure out his identity and whether he is the guy that stole two dell laptops from the auditor's office. >> i'm hopeful that they will quickly get to the bottom. and you know, what has occurred, what motivated them,

what precipitated that. and i hope that it had nothing to do with the ongoing investigations. >> reporter: the auditor looks into the efficiency and control. they are running about two dozen investigations right now, including one into how theformer council member was able tosifen off more than $300,000 in grants to youth programs. council chairman said in a statement that he is concerned about the burglary and considers it a serious matter. but he declined further comment. the police report says that the thief pried open several internal doors to steal the laptops. the auditor also declined interview requests, so it is not clear if the computers contained sensitive data or whether that data was backed up on the auditor's office network. and the building also houses the d.c. inspector general's

office, but there's no word that anything was taken there. and we spoke to the mayor last night. >> hopefully it was not an ongoing investigation. >> right. you know that there are plenty of those going on right now. >> yes, certainly. >> they are hoping that somebody will recognize the guy in that surveillance video. give them a call and so they could get to the bottom of this. anita? >> that's a clear picture. all right, thank you. and the trial of five men, charged in one of the district's deadliest shooting is about to come to an end. five people were killed in three separate shootings march of 2010. nine others were hurt. during today's closing arguments, they said that the shootings were sparked by a missing piece of jewelry. they are brothers right now and along with jeffrey best, robert bach and lamar williams.

if convicted, they could spend the rest of their lives. they are accused of trying to kill another man. and in upper marlboro, they were arrested on tuesday. they are now facing several charges, attempted murder and intent to murder. they are being held in the county jail with the court date set for next month. and when a loved one is fighting in a war zone overseas. they are anxious and beautiful and uncertain. that's why all the happy homecomings that we have seen throughout the years will hold a special heart in our heart. today, we saw a reunion in northwest d.c. and with theirs. the petty office first class anxiously awaits outside to surprise their family. >> i could not wait to see that there.

more fallout from the secret service. the prostitution scandal. three members that protected the president are out of their jobs and more may follow. the secret service agents are accused of hiring prostitutes before the president's appearance in columbia last week. that'll be expected next week. and the only one on board is dead. the fighter jets had been tracking the plane, unable to make contact with the pilot. they were orbiting here at the time the coast guard cutter and a rescue helicopter have both been sent to the site. crews spent the better part of the day trying to

distinguish the massive fire. the flames broke out on board of the fuel truck and then it spread to a nearby warehouse. and the heavy black smoke outside dayton could be seen for miles. the nearby schools were let out early and residents were asked to stay indoors. the oil company said that they don't know what sparked the initial fire in the first place. hundreds of students staged a rally today. they called a special session of the legislature. they could cause millions of dollars in cuts -- cuts at the university. think will only call a special session if both of them could come to some kind of a consensus. if all of it does not happen, the so-called doomsday budget would mean $50 for cuts. and back from the break, the iconic system boll of the chesapeake bay. >> the population of the blue

glass, blue crab is back to levels. that's according to the figures released today. scott broom with the reactions from the water front. >> reporter: it might be hard to remember, but back in 2008, the crab industry was on the verge of collapse. that's when they cooperated to put on the new catch limits and it worked. today we learned that the crabs are back. >> i'm now glad to report that the population of the blue crab is now at a 19-year high. >> reporter: the scientists say that they figure there will be at least three quarters of a billion crab in the waters. the stunning rebound. after virginia stopped allowing the controversial practice. and restrictions were imposed elsewhere on taking females ready to lay eggs. it was a painful time for them. and 150 of them sold their

all right, vdot is proposing a $1 monthly fee for easy pass toll collection transponders. the state highway agency said that they will need the extra funds to support the expansion of the easy pass bridges and tunnels by the end of 2010 -- 2012. there will be some time to find out what you think before any fee goes forward. the monthly fee would then take effect on july 1. discussions are underway on exactly what to do with the silver springs transit center. and the facility, it will be way mind schedule after they found the concrete is either too thick or too thin at the parts of the three-story building. the options will include tearing it all down and starting all over again or just reenforcing the problem areas. the transportation officials met with the contractor today.

we just got word that negotiations, they will continue. and some new and horrifying details today at the trial of the confessed mass killer in norway. he wanted to capture and decapitate the prime minister during the shooting massacre in july. he also says that he planned to kill more than the 69 people who died. he believes he was abouting to protect them by targeting the left wing political forces. people in oklahoma city took time today to remember. all the people that lost their lives. that's when he bombed the central building. and the governor, along with the local leaders held a remembrance ceremony this morning, that included 169 seconds of silence for you starting at 9:02 this morning. honoring the 6 million jewish lives lost in the holocaust. coming up, lawmakers will hold a ceremony marking the days of

the milk cartoon. they are searching a building where they expect that search to take several days. sources tell cbs that the suspected killer has long been it in jail on sex crime charges, but prosecutors never felt like they had enough evidence to take him to court. well that suspect is scheduled to be released from a pennsylvania prison later this year. and they have looked at a long list of possible suspects over the years, and they excavated in other places before without success. after being accused of killing his wife more than 21 years ago, robert jarrett was taken into custody last night. in 1991, he claimed she simply walked away from her home after an argument and never came back. police said they recently got information indicating foul play may have been involved and the remains of a body to be that of his wife were found buried in a shed on the couple's property. a solemn ceremony today at the u.s. capital. it was the national day of remembrance to honor those who

died in the holocaust. the keynote speaker and the secretary used the occasion to recognize the importance of the national museum here in d.c. that will remember the holocaust and all of their victims. >> and they also want to play a tribute to the men and women of the u.s. museums that have made it a vital constitution institution. their work has helped show people painful memories and details and the dangers of unchecked hatred. >> today's ceremony included a lighting of the memorial candle by the house speaker john boehner. and on sunday there will be a march of remembrance on the national mall. in poland, about 10,000 people took part in another holocaust remembrance today. it is called the annual march of the living. the first event was held in 1988. and now every year on this day, thousands of people marched silently. and the largest nazi

a health alert tonight about the measles. the cdc said last year was the worst for measles in the u.s. and for 15 years. more than 200 cases, a large jump from the 60 or so that we have seen a typical year. the health officials said most of the cases came from overseas where the vaccination rates have been low and big outbreaks have happened like the london olympics coming up. they want to make sure that u.s. travelers are fully vaccinated. okay, anyone out there have one of these in their purse?

and it will be a female condom, a relatively new method of birthday controls and the std protection. that way you can have it on hand if they are sexually active. a couple years ago, the district health centers started introducing this and educating women, trying to list any stigma about keeping it on hand. the biggest goal is stopping new cases of hiv. >> if they had a female condom too and i got infected, then you know, it would have made it a lot easier. >> reporter: she is talking about the sc2 condom that hit the market two years ago when the dc health department started a new push to combat the hiv epidemic in the district. they distributed more than 200,000sd2 female condom. >> this is safe and exciting and i want women to realize this is something they can use and add it to their things to protect themselves and also protect their partner. >> reporter: the african american women account for nearly 57% of new hiv

infections. and 90% of the new infections in the district. two years after the program started. >> the study in d.c. is really important. because you know it shows that this program could work. >> reporter: it shows. so far, the program is a success. >> and it is the public health. we were involved in partnership with the d.c. public health in evaluating this project as we tried to assess the cost of delivering the program, the cost of the education, as will as making -- as well as making estimates. >> reporter: now, he says that the female condom giveaway provided new infections the first year to save more than $8 million in the future medical cost. and this was an investment of a little over $400,000. >> i think that it provides a great example for other cities to use in the future. >> and let's hope that it happens. a key part is educating women to get them comfortable. you don't see them a lot, keeping them on hand. they are still available at the

this week's cool school. students are competing for a national title. the video game there created could also help us in the future. panel that you could bring relief to victims of the natch -- imagine that you could bring relief to victims of a natural disaster. inspired by last year's massive earthquake in japan, these four students created this. the goal is to avoid debris and keep the wheels spinning, sending it to a village. >> yes, and they could bring attention to the social causes that other people, you know, they might have forgotten about it. the team as they call themselves, they wrote the program.
