on this morning, little fog. and it's a little chilly in spots. so you'll need a jacket early but mike oystrige. it is going to be gorgeous this afternoon. with temperatures by noon in the upper 60s. a lot of long lunch hours or maybe a two hour lunch today. 74 5:00. with a high about 75. here in town, some upper 70s south and west. and then we're going to get a little unsettled for the weekend especially later saturday and sunday. visibilities only a quarter mile at andrews and frederick. we got some fog there. leonard town as well as in tappahannock. patchy dense fog early. your temps they're in the low 40s. look at manassas and culpeper and martinsburg now. frederick 43. there's a chill out there. on the bay that's keeping you warmer annapolis 56. 55 at the pax river naval air station and we sit at 53. our forecast highs today oh it's going to be nice. later this afternoon. mid if not upper 70s but some showers, storms even plain old rain this weekend. details in just a few.

right now here's monika with timesaver traffic. good problems there? you know i was talking to authorities there to figure out why this tractor-trailer fire has been there so long on 270. or i-70 near 270 as you come off of i-40. and the reason is, it was a fedex truck and some of the contents are still smoldering. they want to wait it out for a bit and it's causing a lot of heavy traffic. it's been there for over an hour coming in from frederick on eastbound i-70 watch out for the activity there. once you're on 270 you're absolutely fine. there are no issues there. in fact a live look at 270 and here's what it looks like at father hurley boulevard. normally this is slowing down at 6:00 but right now just fine out of jermantown and down to the point where the lanes divide. your lanes are open there. i'll keep you posted on the situation up in frederick. in the meantime, southern maryland looks great. no problems on route 4, route 5, route 30 #. everything looks fine through andrews air force

base and down to oxon hill. north it's going to be heavy and slow from lorton to springfield and then 395 just a teeny bit in landmark. coming up in my next report,en update on frederick at 6:12. back to you guys. problems with concrete work have halted the construction of a new $100 million transit center in downtown silver spring. >> work on the center is already a year behind schedule and now they're wondering if it's ever going to open. many people. our delia goncalves is live in downtown silver spring with the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning mike. a lot of folks frustrated after the last hit. in the last half hour. a gentleman came over and started talking about the fact that this thing has just been sitting here and no one's been working on it. so everyone's curious and wondering when is this going going to get done. you know the new opening schedule is four months away. but there is no concrete solution anywhere in sight. about a year ago, inspectors

discovered the concrete did not meet standards. it was too thick in some areas, simply way too thin in other areas. it is not a safety hazard but this transit center is simply not up to code as is. and metro says they will not use it in its current state. one option coming from the county tear the $100 million structure down and rebuild. >> will this last as long as it's supposed to last? is it a 50 year structure or now a 30 year structure? >> that's pretty ridiculous, i know that i have been spending a lot of -- they've been spending a lot of money on it. to tear it down seems like taxpayer money going to waste. >> that's really a bad possibility. i -- but i guess if it can't be fixed. i mean it's better than taking a chance on somebody being hurt. >> reporter: all right, so even though we don't know how or when the transit center will finally be complete good news taxpayers. the contractor will pay for any

repairs, not you. coming up at 6:30, we'll take a look at another possible fix that doesn't involve a demolition. mike, back to you. >> all right, delia. thank you. delia goncalves reporting life from silver spring. newly released toxicology reports show three young passengers who died in a car crash last career in olney, maryland were all legally drunk. prosecutors say the driver of that car, kevin coffay left his three friends to die in the wreckage. he eventually pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and a judge gave him 20 years behind bars. coffay is due in court today after he requested a judicial panel to review his sentence. a howard county man is in jail accused of killing his wife more than 21 years ago. in 1991 rather robert jarrett of elkridge said his wife christine simply walked away from their home and never came

back. police say they recently received information from jarrett's current wife. the remains of a body believed to be that of christine jarrett were found in a shed on the couple's property. police have arrested a man they say sexually abused a young boy at a church day care in northeast washington. officers took randolph king into custody in hyattsville. the alleged abuse police say happened last week at the zion baptist church of eastland garden. parents tell us that church's day care looks adducessens of -- after dozens of children. a 2-year-old girl who was killed by her mother six years ago will be reunited with her father soon. in 2006, the father who lives in los angeles reported his daughter missing. and since then detectives believe the girl and her mother maria cano have left the country. well, earlier this week, investigators found cano and the 12-year-old -- the girl who is now 12, living on west nettle tree road in sterling. coo faux is facing charges. four u.s. troops were

aboard a blackhawk helicopter which crashed in afghanistan yesterday. it happened in the southwestern part of the country. no word on the condition of the troops. early indications are that weather was a factor in the crash. a defense department official says enemy fire has not yet been ruled out. the united states is calling on the security council to adopt an arms embargo and other tough measures against syria. the trackdown has resulted in 9,000 deaths, despite the call for more sanctions u.s. leaders are stopping short of calling for outside military intervention in the country. 6:06. jessica doyle is here with another your money report. >> and your choice of airlines could be getting smaller pretty soon. >> that's right. get ready for toot possible merger in the airline industry. cbs news reports u.s. airways is actively seeking a deal with american and it could be a hostile takeover. the airline is in bankruptcy

proceedings right now. they are also lobbying lawmakers on the hill to win approval. it's the largest carrier out of national airport. people are starting to fix up their homes again. home remodeling is expected to pick up in the second half of the year making 2012 the strongest year since 2006. that's according to a study out of harvard university. but these are not the supersize remodels of years apast. driving the market will be mid size kitchen and bath projects, maintenance work and energy efficient upgrades. if you want to live near a good school, prepare to pony up about $200,000 more. a new report from the brookings institution finds that home values are $205,000 more on average in neighborhoods with high scoring public schools. versus schools with low scores. costs work out to be about $11,000 more a year and the homes are bigger too and tends to have one and a half additional rooms and 30% fewer are rented. now you know. >> that's interesting. >> now you can run the numbers of buying that bigger home

a bonds hearing this morning. he was charged with second degree murder. zimmerman claims he shot trayvon martin in defense back in february. the fbi and police are now searching new york city basements for the remains of a child who disappeared in 1979. they are expected to dig up a concrete floor in the basement of this apartment building that was poured just days after etan patz vanished. he was one of the first missing children ever to be featured on a milk carton. the cdc has compiled some numbers across the country linking to human papillomavirus to diseases across the country. cervical cancer was the most common. throat cancer was a close second. officials say many of these could have been prevented with the hpv vaccine.

andrea? thank you mike. the growing rate of childhood obesity has led to a new push for healthier food being sold inside america's public schools. later this summer, the department of agriculture is set to issue new rules limiting the amount of sugary salty and fatty foods which can be sold to school children. joining us to talk more about this issue is registered dietitian jessica black from the kids safe and healthful foods project. these are the kinds of food we find in the snack machines. i thought we were doing better with what we were putting in those machines. >> well, the good news is that there are lots of schools that are doing better. the challenge is, there are still lots of schools that have a long way to go. and the kids safe and healthful foods project just released a poll that shows the vast majority, in fact 80% soft voters support there being nutrition standards from vending machines, school stores, snack bars all the places on the campus.

>> why they're sporting it is because of what we are learning about what they're doing to our children. again, illuminative. what do these snack foods that are sugary and salty do as far as exacerbating the problem of obesity? >> one of the other things the poll showed is that over 80% of voters are concerned about childhood obesity and over 50% are very concerned and given that children spend over half of their waking hours often in the school building and consume over half the calories in that space, it's a critically important environment in terms of have versing that trend. and actually having healthier children. >> do we have to make a choice between funding academic curriculum-type programs versus healthier snack foods in the -- in the school buildings? >> schools can do very well within the restricted budgets that they have. and improving the school nutrition environment. one note is that it's a win/win. i know that healthier students with better students and that's important to schools but we also know there are schools out

there making the changes and they are including students and offering taste testing and introducing products that are healthier to students in a fun way so they can maintain revenues or compensate for any lost revenues and still be able to achieve the academic goals. >> the children will eat the options. >> absolutely, if what we put in front of children are multitude of healthy options they choose among healthy options, is advantage to offering healthy choices is that those are in fact the choices kids will make and the foods kids will eat. >> anything else parents and kids themselves can do to encourage dh find of healthy -- this kind of snacks in our schools? >> absolutely, parents play a large role. we actually encourage them to come to the website and learn more about thousand they can be involved in the process. and also get to know their local school environment. see what they're serving there and see if they can help the school make healthier choices. >> all right you get into the habit it becomes natural. >> absolutely. >> jessica, thank you.

dropped to three quarters and stafford to one-half. so patchy dense fog. and chilly. we've got readings in the low 40s. culpeper is 41. gaithersburg and easton are 45. while 55 in southern maryland. no fog there from jan and 53 here in washington. looking outside on the michael & son weather camera; just a few minutes before sunrise. that's this partly cloudy skies and little haze calm winds can the dew point sits at 50 degrees. cold front out to the west of us will head our way ahead of it today though no problems south winds are going to bring in 70s and keep us generally sunny. there's that front tomorrow in the morning hours into ohio. as we get in toward lunchtime looks like areas maybe in the northern shenandoah valley out to hagerstown could see some showers. mid to late afternoon, here comes the shower and thunderstorms 3:15. we're going to watch this because that will get past us tomorrow night. however into sunday, low pressure is going to come up from the south bring more rain back to us. and some of the rains on sunday could be on hefty side

colombia prior to president obama's arrival for the summit of the americas last week. secret service director mark sullivan is promising a very thorough investigation. maryland congressman cummings says this is critical time for the agency. >> i think the secret service will be harder on themselves than the congress could ever be on them. >> all of the accused agents are undergoing drug testing but there's no evidence they used drugs. polygraph tests have also been conducted on the agents. metro is now inspecting all of its defibrillators after a man had a territory attack and -- heart attacked and died on monday afternoon. officials say it wasn't working and wasn't charges. the 51-year-old man from alexandria was at the pentagon metro station when the heart attack again and he was pronounced dead at virginia medical center. they say the defibrillator didn't work because the battery didn't have enough charge and

mote resays the inspection will be complete sometime today. the $101 million transit center is supposed to link downtown silver spring. but cracks in the concrete and other faulty work by the contractor have halted progress. >> and now montgomery county lawmakers forced the deal with what some say may be the easiest solution. tear the whole thing down and rebuild it once again. delia goncalves is live with more and it's already creating a traffic mess with the cars much less the commuters. good morning delia. >> reporter: absolutely, commuters are really frustrated mike and you know you mentioned it. it may be the easiest but no doubt it is the most costly. and the most painful of solutions. especially for folks who've been seeing this construction going on for two years now. the main problems we're talking about is on the second and third floor, that's where the concrete problems exist and those levels are meant to hold more than 30 buses and cars each. the county says while tearing down the structure is a worst

case scenario, the only other option right now comes from the contractor. the contractor says the structure is certainly strong and sound. all it needs is a coat of sealant and any repairs will come out of his pocket. >> we became aware of the -- the thickness problems when some cracking of the concrete occurred over some areas where reinforcing bars were under the surface. which would indicate that there was not -- there was insufficient concrete cover over the rebars. >> i think there's sufficient evidence now that you can provide the mediation without having to tear it completely down. >> reporter: no matter what they decide, one thing is for sure -- this project will certainly not be done by its new rescheduled opening of august. that's just four months away. there is no fix in sight. so it is going to be a lot longer than that. and get this -- if the county and contractor can't come up

welcome back. monika samtani here with timesaver traffic. i've got a couple of things to tell you about. first of all, the accident in fairfax city. the clean-up continues on route 123 near route 50. so watch out for the police direction in that area. 56 has been incident-free this morning. no issues to report coming out of manassas toward the beltway. now there was an accident on the outer loop of the beltway here near the springfield and interchange. everything has been cleared up and delays clearing quickly as well. first live to the sky # on the outer loop as you can see things are much improved here traveling toward the robinson terminal and the springfield interchange. let's go over to the northbound side of 95. this has been slow on our 50 camera leaving lorton into springfield. pretty much since the 5:00 hour. it's been pretty heavy this

morning. heading on to 395 and a last live look at to the 14th street bridge. in my next report, another look at the big picture but first virginia commuters and ez pass commuters, vdot is posing a $1 fee. the highway agency needs the extra money to support the expansion of ez pass use on new electronically tolled roads, bridges and tunnels by the end of 2012. there will be a period of public comment before any fee goes forward and if approves a monthly fee would take effect on july 1st. howard you have some better news than i do? i do. it's going to be a fine day today and then we get some much- needed rain this weekend. your bus stop forecast some patchy dense fog otherwise mostly sunny to partly cloudy. it's cool though. temperatures in the 40s in some cases low 40s to low 50s out there with fairly light wind

evening, 78. sunday upper 50s with at least showers if not potentially some heavier steadier rains. monday still a few showers especially early. look how cool and unsettled we're going to be through the middle of next week with temperatures only in the 50s for highs through wednesday. university of maryland students are urging governor o'malley to call a special session of the legislature. the current budget stalemate in annapolis could cost millions of dollars in cuts and drastic tuition increases at the university. the governor says he'll only call a special session if both the state senate and the house of delegates reach a consensus. if it doesn't happen that doomsday budget would go into effect which will mean $50 million in cuts for the university and maybe a 10% hike in tuition. wow. maryland's crab population has come back in a big way. and that means cheaper prices at the market. authorities say blue crab population is now at a 19 year high. they estimate there are at least three quarter of a billion crabs in the chesapeake

waterway. strict conservation measures imposed two years ago appear to be paying off now. >> fortunate that the scientists did -- >> one of the clearest indications that the health of the bay is not a hopeless cause is the rebounds bound of late of this blue crab population. >> now in addition to the lower prices for consumers local watermen stand to profit because it means fewer crabs will be imported from elsewhere. it says it's already in the process of replacing all the lights along the mall with energy efficient bulbs. and it's almost finished with the $33 million rehab of the reflecting pool. >> we host 280 million visitors year. so these are teachable moments to talk about sustainability, care for the planet, and investments that these visitors can do back home as well.
