is the appropriate sentence for a 20-year-old who left a party drunk with four of his friends, slammed into a tree, ran off into the woods, leaving three of his friends to die? the courthouse's largest courtroom packed with teens from the happiness foundation. a program organized by the father of one of the victims. but kevin coffee's lawyer argued that no drunk driver has been handed a 20 year sentence in montgomery county. that the harshest sentence handed down in a drunk driving homicide since 2008 has been a dozen years, not twenty. but victim, johnny hoover said that's because there is no comparable case. that what coffee did was so bad that it defies. there is one message that they want to go out. >> drinking and driving is not

something that should be played with. it's not a joke. you need to take it seriously and even if you are going out and having a good time, make sure you are safe about it. >> kevin coffee hand wrote a letter to the judges saying he thought his sentence was based on an avalanche of anger and raw vengeance. the guilt of killing his three friends keeps him up at night. he says if the judges let him out sooner, he will share the horror of what he did with other teenagers. kevin coffee cried, apologized to the victim's families. his sister cried as well as he told the judges her brother is remorseful. he does not possess any joy, any laughter. he is the shell of a human being. coffee's aa sponsor said we cannot throw him away like trash. to which, one of the victim's fathers responded, kevin coffee will live a good, long life.

but these three young people are gone. anita. >> so much loss. bruce leshan, thank you. the search presumed in new york city today for clues into the disappearance of 6-year-old aton pates. pates disappeared in 1979 while walking to his school bus. the fbi and new york police are digging up a basement that was used by a handyman. investigators say new evidence has led them to the handyman who used to pay aton to help him with small chores. the boy's body was never found and no one has been charged. >> for anybody who went through that in the beginning, it still lingers 30 years later. >> i remember hoping that i would find him. >> cadaver dogs picked up a human scent deep within the walls of the basement. aton's disappearance drew national attention to child safety. his picture was among the first to appear on milk cartons.

and here in the washington area, the reopening of the case has really recalled the hundreds of similar disappearances in our area. scott broom is here now with a painful reminder about all these young people, many whose names we don't know who are still missing. >> the charlie project and it is divided up by states. just in maryland, d.c., and virginia alone, there are missing cases and a lot of them are kids just like aton pates. >> one of the most difficult cases is that of george who disappeared from his maryland neighborhood may 24, 1993, at the age of 10. he was last seen riding his bike. with the help of photo software from the national center for missing and exploited children, this is what george might look like today if he's alive. >> what i hear from parents almost every day is that the

worst is the not knowing. >> ernie allen is ceo of the alexander based center for missing and exploited children. >> disappearance of aton pates in many ways was the beginning of the missing children's movement. >> renewed search is just as important now. >> i hope it is an inspiration to other law enforcement agencies. we devote a lot of time and effort to keep these cold cases alive. we do age progressions of long- term missing children. we are using technology and forensic tools. so, i hope that this reminds police agencies in every community that there are cases in their town just like this and maybe it's time to take another look at those old files. maybe there are ways we can find answers today that we couldn't find 30 years ago or 40 years ago. >> now according to the department of justice, there are 55,000 missing kid cases that happen every year. obviously the vast majority of

dulles access road today. the one vehicle crash happened during the morning rush hour in the westbound lanes near the beltway. one person was killed. two others were taken to the hospital. the crash tied up traffic on both the airport only road and the dulles toll road for literally hours. investigators trying to find the cause of that accident. traffic came to a stop a short time ago on the 14 street bridge. police say a suburban suv and another vehicle collided around 3:30. look at that. it happened on the inbound express lanes. the second vehicle literally flipped over. there are no reports of any injuries, but all the inbound express lanes and one outbound lane were shut down. not a good thing on a friday afternoon. and now to a school bus that went up in flames today along the baltimore washington parkway. the smoke there could be seen for miles. it happened at annapolis road in landover. the driver got out safely. no children were on that bus at the time. investigators say it was a d.c. school bus. the fire is now out and the

road is back open. a hero's homecoming for a volunteer firefighter in prince georges county. the 7th and final firefighter injured in a riverdale house fire last february has been released from the hospital. and kristin fisher was at the hospital as kevin o'tool thanked the staff who had nursed him back to health. >> reporter: 22-year-old kevin o'tool walked out of the hospital to the applause of his fellow firefighters. this is the first time he's been outside in 55 days. >> it actually is the first time i am actually outside the hospital. so it is a really good feeling. >> he had ten surgeries in two months. second and third degree burns. >> my knees, my calfs, my stomach, my sides, both my arms, my shoulder, and my hands. >> kevin was one of seven firefighters injured while fighting a house fire two months ago. the cause, arson. but when asked if he was angry

or upset about what happened, he said -- >> i would rather not comment. when they rolled me in that night, i made a commitment to, this isn't going to take me. i'm going to fight my way through this and i'm going to get back to who i was. >> i have 38 years in the fire service and i have never seen anybody in my entire life or career that has had the stamina to drive forward and just say that, you know, tomorrow is a new day. >> every day is a good day from now on. >> reporter: whoever started that fire has never been caught. this is still a very active investigation. but at least now all seven firefighters injured that day are home safe. at medstar washington hospital center, kristin fisher, 9news now. >> we wish you the best. by the way, he has a lot of rehab ahead. kevin says some day he hopes to return to the volunteer fire department full-time. >> that would be the best

>> we are learning more about the agents themselves who have been forced out. danielle nottingham is at the white house with the latest on this case. >> reporter: anita, we're learning more about the agents involved in this scandal as the white house defends the secret services response to the incident. the secret service is moving closer to a final decision about the future of eight agents put on administrative leave. cbs news has learned their polygraph test could be complete soon and the results will likely determine if they will have their security clearances permanently revoked and lose their job. three other agents are already out. including supervisor, greg stokes who was fired and supervisor david cheney who retired. one of cheney's earlier assignments was a security detail for former vice presidential candidate, sarah palin. he made light of his work on his facebook page. posting a 2008 photo with palin

secret service have investigators on the ground looking into the scandal. william jefferson must report to prison in two weeks. that's a ruling from a judge in alexandria. the louisiana democrat was sentenced to 13 years in prison for taking bribes three years ago. he has been free on bond all this time while appealing the case. the case made headlines when the fbi agents found $90,000 in cash hidden in his freezer. a new memorial unveiled today honoring fallen officers in montgomery county. the granite memorial is engraved with the names of the 30 public safety personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. it's located at the edge of a lake right next to the public safety headquarters building. they first started planning for this memorial in 1995. >> and we honor them for their service and they had a glorious day for a memorial, for doing just about anything.

four americans are now confirmed dead after the crash of a u.s. army helicopter in afghanistan. some reports say the chopper was an american black hawk, but that hasn't been confirmed. the chopper was headed to the scene of a suicide bombing. it crashed last night during bad weather in the southern province. the names of the victims haven't been released and still trying to figure out exactly why it went down. >> up to 130 people are feared dead following the crash of a passenger jet in pakistan. the boeing 737 went down while trying to land in a thunderstorm near the capital of islamabad. witnesses say a fire erupted after the crash and the plane is just destroyed. the local police chief says it would be a miracle if anybody makes it out alive. more shocking details from

the trial of the confessed killer in the norway massacre. he told a court he shot his victims at point-blank range. the far right wing said he meditated to deemotionallize himself before the shooting rampage and the bombing. 77 people, most of them teenagers, were all killed. survivors hugged one another and sobbed during that testimony. >> the face of buckingham palace may never be the same again. take a look at these giant images of queen elizabeth. the images include the self- portraits of 200,000 children. the canvas is part of an arts project celebrating the queen's diamond jubilee. children across the uk were asked to create a self-portrait in any form they wanted. coming up, police call on the public to help investigators solve the murder of a local rapper. plus, why the number of measles cases hit a 15 year high.

we have breaking news in washington where police say they made an arrest connected to a drugstore robbery. the manager of a rite aid was shot in the back during a holdup last friday. police say they arrested 53- year-old rickie maurice this morning. now relatives say the store manager, a father of two young

killed three teenagers. he was driving drunk. he was initially sentenced just a few months ago to 20 years in prison. today this three judge panel just moments ago reduced his sentence to 8 years in prison and five years of probation. cutting his sentence more than in half for this drunken driving accident. the judges in toned that he would be sentenced to ten years for the death of hailey mcguire, but four of that would be suspended for the death of spencer. ten years, four years suspended for the death of johnny hoover. ten years, four years suspended for leaving the scene of an accident, five years. a scene of an accident that caused death, but much of that as well suspended. the bottom line, eight years. we looked over at kevin coffee. he stood tall. he seemed to lighten just a

a contract settlement has been reached that could help pave the way for a possible merger between u.s. airways and american airlines. u.s. airways group says it has reached an agreement with the three unions and american airlines. but there's no deal in place. american has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and is reorganizing. its executives want to exit bankruptcy as a stand alone airline before making a deal with any other airline. your favorite catch of the day may be harder to find starting this weekend. whole foods plans to stop selling wild fish plucked from waters that harm other species. it is a big change that this grocer hopes will change what you put on your dinner plate. >> there you go. that is a local favorite right there. >> behind the counter at this
