a storm is bringing snow, wind and rain to parts of the northeast. howard is here, he can tell us what we can expect. >> reporter: j.c., it has been somewhat of a miserable day around here weatherwise, after being in the 80s on saturday. temperatures are not going to move much more, maybe a few more degrees before the day is out. the main storm from yesterday, the rain which brought in some cases over three inches is way up in new england and canada. we have an upper level storm sitting right over us, producing lots of clouds and west of 95, showers and in the mountains, all this blue you see there, that is snow. some of the snow has been on the hefty side. locally on live doppler hd, light showers for the most part, some areas of drizzle moving slowly off toward the east. you can see as we zoom in toward the metro, howard counties through prince william, we have light showers here, scattered more about the region. not as widespread east of i-95.

but it has been a problem in the mountains in the form of snow. in fact, we still have winter weather advisories and storm warnings in the high country here through 2:00 tomorrow morning. i want to show you some of the images, it is not just in west virginia and maryland, but it is up in pennsylvania. let's go to the jobs town area. these are some of the live cameras. you can see how the roads are mainly wet here. most of this is on route 22 west of 21, east of -- 219, east of pittsburgh. there have been some reports locally six to 10 even 12 inches of snow there. four to five in the frostburg area. i'll come back in a few minutes and talk about the rest of our forecast and let you know when we are going to get back to springtime. it is not going to take all that long so just hang in there. thank you, howard, some students in the northeast are getting an unusual snow day and their parents had to pull out

shovels they had put away. >> reporter: snow plows are clearing the streets of jobs town, pennsylvania this morning. a spring nor'easter had many scrambling to deal with one last winter blast. up to a foot of snow on could fall in higher elevations. >> reporter: what was it like driving down the mountain this morning? >> unbelievable, to say the least -e the snow is wetted and heavy and already causing tree branches to lean on power lines. >> it is breaking the trees and ruining the pretty flowers. >> reporter: the snow is catching many off guard and unprepared. drivers hearsay it is standard practice to remove tires with metal studs before april 15th. >> so a lot of people have their winner tires off, and then you know, this is like the first snow of the season again. people will be crazy. >> reporter: the storm is also packing torrential rains, triggering flooding in many

areas. crews towed cars from deep water in gearssy city. wind is now a big ? jersey city. wind is now a big concern. gusts up to 50 miles per hour are expected. the sun will warm things up, starting tomorrow. the accused killer of unarmed teenager trayvon martin is out of jail this afternoon and in an undisclosed location. george zimmerman was released from jail in florida around midnight. randall pinkston has the latest developments. >> reporter: george zimmerman said nothing to the media as he walked out of a sanford, florida jail. he appeared to be wearing a bulletproof vest under his jacket. zimmerman's attorney is keeping his client's location a secret. >> we have not had any active threats recently, but the concern is there is a ground well of -- ground swell of

opposition. >> reporter: prosecutors believe zimmerman is guilty of second degree murder. to make bail, zimmerman had to put up 10% of the bond or $15,000. he has to wear an electronic monitoring device. must obey a dust to dawn curfew and could not use a firearm. because zimmerman is so recognizable in florida, he may have been allowed to leave the state. trayvon martin's parents are upset the man who killed their son is now out of jail. over the weekend, the family placed a letter in the oh bit wary -- in the obituary section of the miami newspaper. on friday zimmerman apologize today martin's family during his bond hearing. the attorney for them says the apology was badly timed. zimmerman's attorney said if he knew the family felt that way, he would have kept his client silent. >> had i known or been told

that that wasn't the time, it wouldn't have happened. >> reporter: zimmerman is scheduled to be back in court next month for formal arraignment. randall pinkston, cbs news, sanford, florida. besides wearing an electronic monitoring device, zimmerman must also check in with authorities every three days. animal control is looking for two dogs in northeast washington that mauled a man and several children. the man, andre hawthorne, is being called a hero, by some, for trying to protect the children by using his body as a human shield. dramatic surveillance video captured the dogs going after hawthorne friday night. >> i threw my left arm up to the dog. while he was ripping this way i was using my right hand to punch on him. >> two big dogs. they wasn't going for nothing. >> hawthorne had a knife, he was

able to injure the dogs, but they wouldn't let go until a neighbor came after them with a bat. officials with animal control say neighbors know exactly who the dogs belong to, but they haven't been able to locate the dogs. well lanes of the outer loop of the capital beltway in silver spring are open again, following a fatal accident. several cars and a tractor trailer collided around 2:00 a.m. between colesville road and georgia avenue exit. one person was killed. the victim's identity has not been released. testimony is underway in the perjury trial of roger clems. the form -- clemente clements. defense attorneys are expected to attack the testimony of his former trainer, brian mcnamy,

who claims he injected clements with performance-enhancing drugs. john edwards' trial is underway in north carolina. he is accused of using funds to cover-up his affair with his mistress, riel hunter. >> reporter: john edwards arrived at the courthouse with his daughter, kate, at his side. after wrapping up jury selection this morning, both sides present their opening statements in edwards' criminal trial. prosecutors charged the former presidential candidate with six counts, saying he violated finance laws for campaigns. edwards rejected a plea deal and chose to go to trial instead. >> i will regret for the rest of my life the pain and harm i have caused others. but i did not break the law. >> reporter: prosecutors say edwards did break the law,

taking nearly a million dollars in illegal contributions from wealthy supporters. that money paid for travel, hotels and medical care for edwards' mistress, riel hunter, who gave birth to their baby girl in 2008. edwards said he didn't know about the money, his attorney said the payments were gifts and they never went into the campaign account. >> this trial asked the question where does assistance to a personal life end and a contribution to their political campaign begin. >> reporter: the defense is likely to call riel hunter. if convicted, edwards could face up to 30 years in prison. dick brennan for cbs news. >> the judge in the trial said she expects john edwards' trial to last about six weeks. coming up ahead on 9news now at noon. being in need does not mean being without healthy choices. today hero central is featuring

actually the food pantry of the rainbow community development center. sheer >> at first when i started it, i did it just for the school work. but then the more i did it, i realized how much i was actually impacting other people. it is a warm feeling, i can't really describe it. >> reporter: availability of fresh fruit and vegetables provides essential nutrition, especially to children and seniors, according to executive director patricia drummond. >> a lot of clients, because of health needs, they don't eat the canned food items, so they are grateful to be able to get fresh produce. >> reporter: in montgomery county, there are approximately 50,000 people living in poverty. that is about 5.7%. and with healthy and nutritious food -- becoming so expensive,

it is the least likely to be purchased. that is why the rainbow is so important, especially this food bank. >> reporter: anita kent griffin says she is grateful for the help, for her children and herself. >> it helps me when i run out of food at home i know i can always come here. i pray to god today that they do not shut her down. >> reporter: kent griffin is just one of about 100 families the pantry serves each week. >> it is wonderful to know that you can help people that really need the help, that you can make a difference in their life. >> you sleep much better at night, don't you? >> yes, much better. >> reporter: although she told me about her passion for volunteering at the food bank, she says her friends really don't know about it. well today, her secret is out.

is rain in our forecast today? it is awfully cloudy? >> reporter: yeah, we have showers on and off through the afternoon. and it is cold, just raw. >> it is cold. >> reporter: when it is cold and damp like this, it cuts right through you. you feel the cold when it is humid and that is exactly what we are dealing with today. west and northwest of town we have had snow mixed in. want to share pictures, this

one is from bill wolf just right by camp david. he had an inch of snow. he had three inches of rain over the weekend, and that is just a pretty picture. talking about snow, this one is sent from virginia from the bird visitor center, skyline drive. check out the snow on the ground there and in some cases, when you get into garrett county, out toward areas in pennsylvania and westmoreland and somerset counties, now you are talking 6, 12 inches of snow. 3000 feet. 4000 feet. even accumulation today. for us in the dc metro, it is just going to be a raw, nasty afternoon. temperatures holding slowly, not trying to get into the upper 40s. with occasional showers, southern maryland, i know you have had a peek or two of sunshine. the winds 15 to 20 miles per hour. even with the upper 40s with

the winds this afternoon, could be gusting 30 to 35. big system a nor'easter, an upper storm right here still questioning out the snow in the mountains. rainshowers generally west of i-95. we are dealing with it on and off for the afternoon. low 40s, north and west of hagueers town. culpepper to dc to baltimore -- hagerstown, culpepper to dc to baltimore. 40 degrees the wind chill currently in washington. look outside, just a gray, low clouds hanging out over the capital with light sprinkles out there. 46 a west northwest wind at 15. the barometer way low, 29.40. the cold air you can see it from buffalo, right now the mountains and at elevations 2,000 or 3000 feet, there are big time

snows from western new york all the way down to west virginia. the bigger picture, we are going to see some of these showers back across 95. moderate to heavy snow across parts of western new york state, southwestern pennsylvania. travel in a few spots is difficult but in most cases roads are just wet. a lot of this is accumulating on the grassy surfaces. look at the scattering of showers here. even this evening showers, 10:00 still know in the mountains. but this stuff is going to dry up overnight. tomorrow some sun, a few clouds and maybe just maybe a late shower. today we will be lucky to get to 4-9d in town. windy, chilly, oh cation al showers. 30s and 40s tonight not expecting a freeze except in the mountains where the snow is falling. maybe a late shower tomorrow

it is always wonderful to have the montgomery county police chief, tom major, with us because he brings us up to date. the first thing i would like to get your reaction to the sentence reduction that occurred last friday on kevin coffee, he was a drunken driver, he killed three of his friends, he got 20 years, now it has been reduced to eight years. what is your reaction? >> reporter: well i thought that -- >> well i thought that 20 year sentence sent the right message that this kind of thing was not going to be tolerated. i was hoping it would have some deterrent effect for anybody driving drunk in the future so i'm a little disappointed.

>> i'm sure you are. you have a big day coming up saturday. it is a drug take back day. what are you hoping people do? >> we are hoping people will bring back unused, expired prescription medicine. i would tell you the first time we did this, i was surprised at the reaction. it was just people nonstop. they can go to any montgomery county police station to drop off old, used prescription medicine, we had people whose parents passed away and they had loss of this medicine. >> no illicit drugs no needles. >> that's right. let's talk about the armed robbery in potomac. >> we know of three cases all occurred a little before or after midnight in the jones lane area in potomac, where someone came up behind a car, bumped

the car, you are thinking it was an accident. the other driver would get out. fortunately, two drivers did not get out. one driver did, he was abducted and beaten, they stole money out of his atm. we were asking about suspicious vehicles around that area these all occurred in the last three weeks or so, so we are looking for the public's health in this case. and the white oak murder that took place, can you give me an update on that? >> this occurred last december. a man was found on stewart lane in the white oak area, he was deceased in the roadway. we thought he might have been hit by a car, found out he had been shot. we think there were folks that were on the bus, right there at stewart line near colesville road that may have seen something, and so again we are asking for the public's help in this. they can all our tip line and leave any information anonymously, we are just looking
